To say that Calynn was ambitious from the day she was born wouldn't have been an overstatement. It was known since she was young that she was someone of wide interests and strong willpower. Her competitive and success-driven spirit made her someone who held herself to high standards and those high standards led to a certain level of pride that was hard to overcome. She had a strong preference for doing things independently and in her own way rather than letting others step in and help.
Aside from her determined attitude, Calynn can also be seen as a talkative and social child. She enjoys making new connections and spending time with friends and family. Empathy and the ability to comfort those in need are both traits that Calynn lacks. She prefers to solve problems resourcefully and with logic rather than worrying about the emotional impacts of her decisions. Despite her sometimes bossy attitude, she has a playful and mischievous side that can come out around those she is close with.
It is safe to say that Calynn was born into chaos. She was the fifth born child of Evelyn and Philip Reid and the only girl in the family. Aiden (4 at the time) was a natural prankster, James (6 at the time) was overdramatic and sensitive, Thomas (7 at the time) enjoyed roughhousing a lot, and Lachlan (10 at the time) liked to boss the others around. All of this led to a reasonable amount of noise and racket in the apartment in Edinburgh in which they lived.
As Calynn and her brothers grew older, she became the subject of much of the family's attention. Because of her status as the youngest, she was often looked after more than the others despite being the one who enjoyed it the least. It was unfair that she wasn't allowed to walk places in the neighborhood by herself when her brothers could, it was unfair that she wasn't allowed to purchase her own lunch in the cafeteria when her brothers could, and it was even more unfair that she wasn't allowed to attend sleepovers even when her parents knew the other family well when her brothers could. She used the same books that they used and her education was spent in the same local school that they went to. Why couldn't she have some freedom as they did?
The night on which Calynn's eleventh birthday fell was a dark and cloudy one in the springtime. James and Thomas were bickering over which CD to insert into the old CD player that barely worked anymore, Aiden was stuffing his face with the birthday cake that Philip had prepared for the special day, and both parents were cleaning up after the dinner festivities. A seemingly normal situation in the Reid house. The only thing that was out of the ordinary was the visitor standing outside the door, preparing themselves to knock. There would be a lot of confusion and convincing her parents that "Hogwash" was a safe and beneficial place to attend school but one thing was for certain, she was set to attend Hogwarts for the coming school year.
