Quidditch Ravenclaw vs Gryffindor - Spring 2024

With only two Gryffindors left in the sky, this game was quickly coming to a close one way or another. While this wouldn't have been the first match Ravenclaw had won by sheer force and brutality, Cecily had been hoping for a more triumphant—and perhaps legal—victory for her last match. The bang of Aly catching the snitch for the first time, not the whimper of watching her opponents fall painfully to the pitch one by one (although she still couldn't keep a smirk off her face as Jorah, with a reputation at this point, sent a bludger streaking through the air in an explosion of broom shards).

A quick glance at the scoreboard showed that this match would be close. Even with Cecily and Lavinia teaming up on the Quaffle—a tough match-up to beat, considering Lavinia had been playing nearly as long as Cecily herself and was arguably an even better Chaser—Gryffindor's pesky underclassman had managed to sneak not one, but two scores in. The audacity.

The Quaffle

Blue and red would colour the sky as Finnegan and Cecily battled for the Quaffle. Finnegan was young and bright-eyed, but he was also perhaps shaken from his recent collision with a bludger. And whatever she lacked in second-year splendour, Cecily made up for with seventh-year experience, confidence and swagger. She continually swiped the Quaffle away from Finnegan — despite similar strokes of luck, the two Chasers had vastly different wells of experience to draw from.

'Forty points to Ravenclaw!'

But Finnegan wasn’t about to give up. Almost like a last-ditch attempt, he reached out and took the Quaffle so quickly that even the Ravenclaw captain herself couldn’t stop him. He barrelled towards the hoops only to find them guarded this time by Charlie!

The Keeper held the classic, much-known, well-practised Starfish-and-Stick with wonderful precision, but Finnegan was determined. The underclassman threw the Quaffle through the hoops.

'Ten points to Gryffindor!'

A mixture of boos and cheers could be heard from the stands, but cheers for each Chaser far outnumbered the complaints.

The Snitch

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Maybe that was the mantra of every Snitchgoer of this game. Elsian once again assumed the signaturely-Seekerly position of the Spiral Dive, but despite everything, his reach went way off. The blasted thing fluttered out of reach yet again. At least he had seen it, though, that had to be something.

Aly was having no such luck. The sky was blue. Very blue. Totally cloudless. And the sun was bright, so bright. And the Snitch was not there. Elsian might very well have been spiral diving at nothing, the Snitch was so elusive.

Ravenclaw’s two other Chasers, Winnie and Lavinia, had paused in their pursuit of the Quaffle and aggressive cheating moves in favour of… staring at the sky. Well, perhaps not staring, as surely, they blinked… but the sight that would greet them was all-too-similar to that which greeted Aly.

The sky was very blue. The sun was very bright. The Snitch was, apparently, very non-existent to all but Elsian.

The Bludgers

Gryffindor’s numbers were dwindling. Jorah’s field day was, therefore, quickly turning into more of a small-back-garden-grass day. Nonetheless, the lack of opponent targets would not faze him. He took aim with the laidback precision of a Beater having quite a bit of fun, hurling a bludger at poor Finnegan, who did his best to evade.

His best was not enough. The bludger struck his already-battered frame, and he fell off of his broom and down to the earth below, unconscious.

Of course, anyone who had even heard of Jorah Moussa would know that Jorah was not done. He would skilfully aim his ricochet at Elsian, the only Gryffindor left in the sky, which really made him an even bigger target. Having just come out of his spiral dive, he was not at his best. The bludger struck him firmly in the torso, but he held on — just barely. Gryffindor still had one player left.

The onslaught wasn’t finished, of course. Even the environment had it out for Elsian. Luckily, the environmental bludger came at him much slower than Jorah’s did, and he was able to evade with ease.

Oh, Merlin, they were so close. If no more goals were scored right now, and the Gryffindor Seeker caught the Snitch right now, the two Houses would tie and it would go into one of those sudden-death matches, now wouldn't it? Such a thing had never occurred in a match played by the curly-haired Ravenclaw Seeker.

She squinted at the horrible blue of the cloudless sky, wishing there was something to block the brilliant sun so she could see properly. Stupid sun-sensitive eyes. Stupid clouds. Stupid sun. Stupid blue sky. Normally Aly quite liked blue, especially the lovely bright shade of a good sunny day's sky, but not today, when it was causing her to let down her team. She'd done that quite a lot, in the last four years of playing for Ravenclaw.

But at least she was here. In the sky. At least she was on the team, and Gryffindor was down to just two players, and all of the eagles were still in the sky, and that was something, at least.

Damn it, Snitch, where are you?!

Charlie watched her main scorer on her team, Cecily, zip over to the unguarded Quidditch hoops on the Gryffindor side and score her team 40 points. Charlie smiled, but it was soon ripped off her face when Finnegan Conner, the last remaining chaser on Gryffindor scored ten points on her. She wasn’t proud but knew it wasn’t a big deal because Ravenclaw was still in the lead.

What happened next was not much of a shock. Jorah came in and smashed a blunger at Finnegan and knocked him out. Charlie cheered as she has no more work to be done, she could sit back and relax, keeping an eye out for blungers and the snitch. She watched as one of the blungers also hit Elsian, but did not knock him out. Gryffindor only had two players left, one benched seeker and one injured but still flying seeker, thanks to Ravenclaw.

𝓝othing good in this world comes without some sort of price. Hadn't she said that she wanted to eke out one final win for Cecily before the seventh year graduated in June? It certainly looked like they were headed that way, regardless of whether or not Aly managed to snag the snitch before game's end. She didn't really feel like a winner, though, despite Cecily nabbing another 40 points for Ravenclaw to Finnegan's 10.

If anything, Finn's impressive showing against their tenured captain made him even more of a target than he had been just by being one of the only currently conscious Gryffindors, and it was inevitable that Jorah would come back to finish what he had started. Bex could do nothing but watch as Finnegan was roundly struck by a second effortlessly-aimed bludger, one he had little hope of avoiding in his current battered state.

Watching Finn get his ass beat was probably never going to get any easier.

What was the etiquette of leaving mid-game? The only Gryffindor left standing - or, well, flying, she supposed - was their seeker, so there was no reality in which she'd be called up to play before the snitch was finally caught. She was of no use t0 anyone down here on the bench, and meanwhile her friend had fallen down to the earth, unconscious at a speed of mach 5, and she wasn't sure she was going to be able to calm the restless anxiety clawing around inside of her until she'd seen the nurse put him back to sorts.

Finn was fine. She'd been in the same position herself her first game, and had been perfectly healthy after no more than a couple of hours in the nurse's care. There was no reason to be stressed about it. No reason to remember him covered in his own blood as he begged her not to le- Nope, end of thought. She'd already gone over this with herself; letting those memories bubble to the surface was bad for Quidditch.

She forced herself to stay sitting, nervously pulling undone the threads of her uniform's sleeves while she counted down the minutes until she could gracelessly make her hasty exit. "C'mon, Aly." She murmured to herself. "Now would be a really good time to see the snitch."

With this round, the bludger once again took out another player, though luckily one in red and gold. Funnily enough, none of the Ravenclaw players were out of the game, while the Gryffindors had seemingly lost at least five or six by now. That was good, yeah? Things were looking very hopeful for them indeed.

Ophelia nodded in agreement as Quinn said that she hoped for Ravenclaw success. It was her first game and she wanted nothing more than for her house to win the final game of the year.

As the other girl guiltily added that she sort of wanted one of the chasers to fall so she could play, Ophelia let out a smile, her eyes still on the game.

"It's normal to actually want to play the game. Sitting here as part of the team is exhilarating and all, but it isn't the same as being on the field."

Even as she said it, Ophelia watched the Ravenclaw seeker, wondering why her team couldn't find the snitch.

At this point in time poor Gryffindor had one player left on the field, and the game was starting to feel a lot more sinister than usual. Could they win based on a total team wipe out? Stranger things had happened. She felt terrible for poor Elsi and Eve. She could remember how she had a faced a similar fate when their team had played against Durmstrang and she had watched as her team mates had fallen from the sky one by one.

Quinn was glad that Ophelia agreed with her about acually playing the game. Quinn certainly had waited long enough. Quinn looked at the sky. suddenly realizing the lack of red and gold in the air. Quinn held back a boo as the gryffindors scored. I really hope we can catch the snitch. Quinn thought.
