i need to sleep, and James, I am unsure how to help unfortunately, since you still love James, and even mentioned thinking about returning to James (and even switching back and forth every six months) but I switched back to Noah because Cody wasn't a good fit for me. (as well as other reasons)

seriously though, I totally get what you mean. If I were you, I'd stick to James in that circumstance. If either way you'd miss the old character, at least with James you have all your relationships and threads while the ones on your old account might be dead, and like you said, your ency is coded. I wouldn't sacrifice it unless you were completely bored with James. But that's just me. Plus I'm biased cause I haven't met your other character. Think about it for a while.

Hey as someone who's switched like four times - it's better to switch now if you don't like your character, than to wait. Remember these are entire years of your life you're going to have to wait - best to switch a bunch of times and find a character you can settle down with then to continue with a character you don't like.
