For those who know Edwin, 'Perfectionist' may not be amongst the first ways in which they describe him, for very few know of Edwin's proclivities - of his truest nature. He was someone who bordered on obsessive for that which he was passionate about, spell casting being that which he held in the highest regard, that which he was most passionate about. If he wanted to learn a spell, he would do so and he would learn it to such detail that he could cast it perfectly.

It was a trait that he had always had, though again, few knew of it. Since he was a child, he would observe his brothers practicing flying manoveurs or observe his parents casting spells, and any slight fault in their work would scream out at him. Every instinct in his body begging for him to demand that they fixed their mistake. Yet, he did not. For he could not be bothered to fix the mistakes of others, but even when he was a child, he was certain. He would not make those same mistakes that he had witnessed. If he were to cast a spell, each syllabul would be enunicated with perfection, each flick of his wand would be text book. There would be no error in his work.

And so, upon arriving at Hogwarts, he somewhat shed the laziness that his family had come to expect of him. Though, this new found work ethic was directed solely towards spell casting, homework could wait. If taught a spell, he would practice it over and over, ensuring that even if he cast in a hurry, or on instinct, he would maintain that level of perfection in his work.

Him joining the Duelling team, and his first experiences of a duel on heightened this drive for perfection. He had witnessed, and experienced spell failure in those duels more than he would care to admit. On one occasion, his own spell had almost struck his teammate, saved only by her quick reflexes. That had been unacceptable.

While he had assumed he'd studied hard enough over first year, evidently that had not been the case. And so Edwin departed for summer with a goal in mind - rectify those errors. Any spell he could cast already, he would review to even the most minute detail. Similarly, he would plan ahead, any spell he intended to learn or would study in class, he would learn back to front before returning to Hogwarts. Ensuring Perfection.

Name of Ability that you Are Applying for: Wandless Magic
Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):

For Cassius, most ambitious endeavors began in the same place: the school library. The sheer amount of knowledge stored on these shelves would take one or more lifetimes to fully study and consume. Even the topic of Cassius’ studies, the advanced magic it was, could take a lifetime to understand and master.

He did not have a lifetime nor did he wish to wait a lifetime. If he wanted to be remembered as one of the greatest wizards of all time alongside legends like Merlin, Dumbledore, and even Voldemort, he would need to learn quickly and leave his mark on the Wizarding World. Before he was old and decrepit…

And so he devoted time now to studying and mastering the difficult art of casting magic without the need of a wand. Upon initial study, Cassius found it odd that Hogwarts itself did not teach the skill, especially when students of other wizarding schools like Uagadou are given that option. Perhaps he and his fellow Europeans were disadvantaged in living in the birthplace of the wand. It had become a crutch rather than a tool of convenience.

It was also never a guarantee you would have access to your wand. One could be disarmed or bound and thus be made entirely helpless. Cassius had experienced that. The feeling of being completely powerless. Impotent. It was a situation he vowed to never allow himself to be in again.

And so he studied. Book after book of academic research and tales about casting magic without a wand. They spoke of methods to mimic the wand movements with your hand and fingers. How to speak the incantation at a whisper. How to use your hand as the wand.

It was fascinating and a bit empowering. Confirming that magical prowess and skill was not because of a wand but because of the wizard. The wand may have some power of its own, but it was ultimately just a tool to channel the inner skill and potential of its owner.

The more Cassius studied, the more he became comfortable with the concept. Weeks passed before he decided to move beyond theory. Seated at a secluded table in the library, he attempted for days to cast the levitation charm on a quill pen. At times it would budge, but it would never levitate. At least, not until one rainy day.

That day was a day of success. Something inside Cassius’ mind just clicked. Now the quill pen lifted and levitated effortlessly. The heavy book next to it? The same thing. Whatever willpower or subtle movements Cassius needed to figure out, he finally had. Casting wandlessly was not easy. It took considerable concentration and mental energy but he had figured it out. Finally.

This is in relation to Siobhan's Canon blinding incident, This Re-Index Approval can be found here

Siobhan had not had a great start to the second half of her second year. After a particularly nasty potions accident, she has been left with the remnants of eyes that no longer work nor look the way that they should in terms of regular eyes. The medical team at St. Mungo's was able to cosmetically revert her eyes back to a way that is not so jarring towards those who look upon her but only so much can be done to the eyes due to their fragility.

The eyes, are their own separate and intricate nervous system. To mess with them, magically, or in a muggle sense, is a dangerous game that professionals must be wary about while working to retract the damage that exists. Siobhan's eyes have been slated as unrreparable due to the extensive heat damage and the length of time it took to get her help. This, along with the delicate nature of the eyes themselves, means that she will never have her eyesight restored back to the way it was.

And so, she's had to learn to see the world in a way that is no longer normal to her. In addition to learning an entire new language (braille) and the navigation through sounds, Siobhan is learning to utilize the sight she does possess by way of shadow sight. With two new ways to see, Siobhan has begun to do research into animal patterns that use such abilities as the echo-location skills that bats and other animals of the dark utilized in their day to day life. In addition, her dreams have been filled with more than whisps of smoke. Additional shadowy figures haunt the crevices of her eyes during the day.

With this new practice of learning to traverse the world via sound and shadows, she has begun to find her way around the castle, up and down the stairs, and through the halls. She still has some difficulty with depth perception and stairs are a struggle for her, but she has begun to find her way around like normal. In terms of movement from others, she has learned to see the difference in slight light changes based on peoples shapes and movements. The sounds of footprints has become somewhat discernable based on those she knows, their weight, and their walking pattern.

At her home in Killarney, she's able to walk through her orchard and across her farm without losing sight (no pun intended) of where she is heading. She can discern between the feeling of bark between her fruit trees, and with her plants that are safe to touch, has learned to determine what it is she is harvesting. Even between the cows and the sheep her family owns, she can differentiate between bleats and hoof sounds.

Slowly her world is coming back to her in ways she never expected. The world perhaps, isn't so separated from her anymore if she can learn to see in a way that befits her now. Her current goal is to work her newfound sight into a way that works for dueling. She believes that the way her opponents move and watching the shadows and light move will help her anticipate where attacks and spells are coming from.

Over the course of his two years at Hogwarts, Prat had begun to develop a finely tuned relationship with his surroundings. He began moving through hallways with awareness that mirrored someone who no longer trusted their environment to be calm and predictable. His eyes, while still blurry at best without his glasses, now looked sharp and calculating even with a piece of metal obscuring them. The new found clarity meant they were always in motion, there was so much to notice, to calculate. His posture never fully relaxed, not even when seated. Him from an year ago would have called it overcautious. This year, he could hardly disagree with himself.

The evolution and eventual obsession weren't sudden. It began from Duelling where spells too quickly for comfort and personal grudges often kept escalating into dramatic clashes. Prat had been in several duels, possibly more than a lot of other second years and often against older ones, who didn't appreciate someone this insufferable. He painfully learned it soon how confidence alone could not block or evade a well placed spell. Being confident, however cool it looked, didn't do shit for staying awake, that was for reflexes.

And so the boy began to train his reflexes, Not in the traditional senses where he went and chased upperclassmen for help or threw himself into reckless practice, but rather through observation and anticipation, judging for sharp movement and adjustments. He replayed his duels in mind, every twitch visible before a cast or the flick of wrists that signaled spells coming his way. Slowly but steadily, he began to be able to predict them, and better yet; dodge better.

It wasn’t just limited to sports. This sense of heightened awareness followed him outside the classroom too, bleeding into his everyday life. Over the summer break, while visiting his cousin’s, a surprise moment confirmed just how attuned he had become.

He’d been walking across the backyard, half-listening to his cousin rant about some mindless drama, when it happened. Without warning, the cousin, looking to gain his attention, hurled a cricket ball straight at his face. He didn’t see it coming. His eyes were elsewhere. But something shifted in the air, a subtle tension, and he turned just enough for the ball to whip past his ear instead of colliding with his cheek. There had been no warning. Just instinct.

He hadn’t even flinched as he caught the ball in his hand.

Quidditch was an ancient and noble sport, that had been played by wizards for many more years than Sayaka had been alive. Growing up an Ito and a Pureblood, she had played many a game of backyard quidditch in her youth. One of the advantages of having two older siblings and two younger cousins was that you practically had half a team in the house ready to go at all times. Other Pureblood children who lived in the area would boost numbers until they had two functional teams ready to go, and then the epic match would commence. Each of them had a speciality: Honami was an excellent keeper who could block even the most determined young child from scoring a goal, while Takuto was a menace at flying so fast it was difficult to snatch the quaffle from his hands. Minato was a surprisingly competent beater for her young age and small stature, although Sayaka suspected that most of the shots she scored were at least in part pity ones from the older kids. Although it didn't really count as a talent, no one wanted to knock Takashi off his broom. He was barely old enough to sit on one at the time after all.

Sayaka's preferred play was an unusual one, contrasting with her normal perfectionist personality. Cheating. To be clear, her opinions were that the rules of quidditch were sacred ones, not to be trifled with. Anything with the risk of a penalty lap however, was perfectly within the rules. It was just another play, just one with consequences to getting caught. Well timed cheating could win your team the game, although of course she would never do anything with risk of disqualification. She stuck to her domain of leaving her hand on the quaffle as it went through the hoop, sticking her elbows out as she passed other players, and general against-the-rulebook action. Many a sniffling spoiled pureblood child was left on the ground with Sayaka standing over them, telling them to "Improve" after she blatched them off their broom. Their parents tended to agree with her, although maybe it part due to not wanting to start a blood feud.

With enough experience, one can improve on anything. Sayaka didn't just get better at cheating over the years, she got better at doing it with stealth. She had flown hundreds of penalty laps, and as time went on, the per week number began to dwindle. It was a bit useless among her siblings, who knew her habits well. But what mattered was that they couldn't prove it was her if they hadn't seen her, and she could get away with it.

Carina hadn't planned on bringing home Hope that August evening. She hadn't planned on going home from Diagon Alley with an extra load on her arms. Giving away her favourite dried mangoes to the tiny furball in her arms? No, she hadn't expected that.

Hope, the name had come easily. Carina wasn't looking for a cute ornament to place at the foot of her bed or a pretty pygmy puff bouncing around her. She was looking for a companion, then a ferret that would accompany her throughout her journey in Hogwarts. Over time, Carina didn't just care for Hope. She trained with her. Not like a trainer with tricks and treats, but like a quiet dance of mutual understanding. Every morning before school, she let Hope burrow and reemerge at her cue. She learned the sound of Hope's clicks and squeaks, each movement meaning something, a warning, a signal, a request. While other students giggled over Pygmy Puffs or treated their animals as accessories, Carina took Hope everywhere that was allowed, and sometimes, where it wasn't. She had a book, yellowish brown, half-missing its spine, on magical creature communication. She'd borrowed it from the second-floor library shelf so often that they stopped needing her to sign it out. She used it to study ferret behavior, and then recorded Hope's in a worn journal with bent corners and pressed leaves from the courtyard between the pages. She tried understanding her, studying not only her own books but also studying about animals. She practiced scenarios, hiding things for Hope to find, whispering soft commandswhen she thought someone might be watching. She also tested Hope in stress to see if she could follow through.

In duels during her first year, Carina noticed something not in books. Hope always knew when to slip behind a trunk, or when to stay hidden. During a practice spell gone slightly wrong, when sparks had flown toward her sleeve, Hope had tugged it, hard enough to pull her back just in time. It could had been instinct, or luck. Now, into her second year, Carina had found a rhythm. Hope knew when her wand tilted meant danger or when the slight tap of Carina's boot against the stone meant 'stay.' Their communication was unspoken, but practiced. The two didn't need magical translation. They needed trust. She had worked with Hope, every day, to be part together.

Now, she didn't go anywhere important without Hope curled at her shoulder or poking out from her sleeve.

Emma had seen this happen in a few duels. A spell split and hopefully hit two targets instead of one. At first, she had thought it was a happy accident, something that couldn’t be controlled or predicted but then she had been studying the library and came across a book that mentioned spells splitting, and that it could be done intentionally. That started an interest in Emma on learning how to pull this off. After all, you never knew when you would be facing off against more than one opponent alone, and it was safer to know how to use it successfully before getting in a dangerous situation. Ever since the summer before when her grandfather had died, she had been so focused on healing and protection that that was the first thing that popped into Emma’s head when she found out she could target multiple people at once.

So, Emma did what she usually did, she read up on the topic, and then she found whatever empty space she could in whatever free time she had to practice. Though that was becoming precious as she knew she would be taking the OWLs in her fifth year and that was not too far off, so she’d started reviewing her previous years notes and practicing those spells. But admittedly it was hard to convince herself that the targets were dangerous. And even when she focused, chanting in her head, split split split over and over and over again, it just did not happen. One afternoon she was repeating the same useless exercise (her frustration levels were at an all time high), when finally the flipendo she had been practicing left her wand and split into two distinct streams. Admittedly only one hit her intended target, and the other flew willy nilly off in the other direction, but it as progress. She tried again, and it failed, but the one-time success gave her confidence that she could do it.

Emma renewed her practice, and it didn’t take too much longer before she was able to replicate her success. When she was able to be more consistent with the actual splitting of the spell, she did her best to start working on her aim. Several weeks passed before she could do it somewhat consistently and hit her target, though admittedly it was not perfect. But at least she felt more prepared for both duelling and anything that may come her way in the future.

Over the years Camille has grown to be, what her friends would call her, a perfectionist. Although she didn’t really mind the title because she herself knew it was true as well. Throughout her time at the private school she attended she was always praised by her teachers, and envied by peers. She always worked really hard at everything she did, for herself and for her parents. She didn’t want to let them down so she always pushed herself to achieve nearly perfect grades, even if it meant she was studying more than playing.

Her parents had instilled this work ethic into her at the start, wanting her to have the best chance at a bright future. But now Camille did it for herself mostly and didn’t mind the hard work either because when she got the results she wanted it made it worth it in the end. She tried to keep everything in her life, although sometimes unrealistic, perfect. Including even in choir where she even spared time to get extra training from the instructor. While singing was one of her hobbies she could do for fun, she still wanted to be perfect in that regard as well. She learned piano growing up and even that she was determined to perfect.

Now that she was going to be attending Hogwarts, she has a whole new challenge ahead of her. After her first instance of magic when she was 8, her mother began telling her about the magic world and all it had to offer. Suddenly everything that Camille had known would change when she embarked on this new journey. She only knew what her mother had told her about in stories of Hogwarts and what her aunt had mentioned to her about her work but with her drive and ambition Camille knew this was going to be her knew challenge and she was determined to keep up her perfectionist style. After going shopping for her supplies Camille began reading through some of her books she had bought, checking out the contents ahead of time so she would be ready for the first days of class and could hopefully impress the professors with her knowledge and keep up her perfect grade streak, even if it was different subjects than her old private muggle school. She hoped that even though all this magic stuff was still fairly unfamiliar she would be able to study and work hard to achieve the results she wants. Her perfectionist style truly was pushing her to be the best even in this new environment as she was determined to not only keep those perfect grades, but be the top of her class or even one of the top students in the school so she could go on to have an amazing Wizarding career.

Secrets, like treasures, were something to be kept under lock and key. The Eden family, a pureblood family with roots stretching thousands of years, had both secrets and treasures in droves. That was Cassius’ inheritance and his responsibility. As heir it would be on his shoulders to protect that horde of knowledge as well as the warehouse shelves full of magical artifacts acquired by his family legitimately – and illegitimately – over the centuries. It was those items acquired illegitimately that were of particular concern.

The Eden family was a family of criminals.

It seemed almost vulgar to apply such a label to a venerable pureblood family that was largely respected and well-regarded but it was the truth. They were smugglers. Poachers. Even enslavers at one point, holding both magical creatures and humans alike against their will for the purposes of a personal menagerie and trade. The latter sin had not been committed for centuries but the legacy remained, as did the ill-gained profits.

If any number of these sins or crimes were discovered it would likely mean prison sentences – or worse – social disgrace and infamy.

And thus every member of the Eden family underwent a special kind of training once they were made aware of the family secrets. A training that would ensure that even under interrogation or the influence of a truth serum they would never reveal those secrets. The Eden family, and those involved in the criminal enterprise, were all required to become occlumens.

Cassius’ training began during winter break of his sixth year at Hogwarts. It started with theory. The specialist hired by the family explained the importance of compartmentalizing information. They explained how to partition the mind into separate ‘vaults’, so to speak, each with its own key. In doing so Cassius came to understand that certain vaults could be left open, allowing a legilimens or interrogator to discover exactly what he intended them to discover, with others locked shut and even hidden from prying eyes.

After winter break, Cassius dedicated himself to the study of occlumency, delving through the school library for any literature on the topic. The theory was straightforward, but the young wizard knew all too well that understanding a theory was not the same as mastering the action.

With the conclusion of his sixth year of studies, the time came to move from theory into action. The specialist trained in legilimency was once again brought to Barmishaw to complete Cassius’ training. The boy knew it would be difficult, even painful, but he was in for a rude awakening. Sometimes the only way to learn to swim was to be thrown into the deep end.

His mind was not just probed. It was invaded.

The legilimens was merciless. Whatever walls and vaults Cassius thought he had created in his mind were brushed aside as if they were made of paper. The specialist discovered memory after memory. His first duelling win. The loss of his father. His first date with Opeila. His thoughts. Ambitions. Self-doubt. Guilt. All was laid bare. It pushed him to his limit, often leaving him a sobbing wreck by the end of the day.

And then it would begin again. Day after day this continued until one day, finally, something clicked. Cassius had been laying on the ground, curled into the fetal position in the corner of the drawing room. Tears were streaming down his face as the memory of a traumatic accident played again and again in his mind. Through sobs, he managed just a whisper: Enough.

He closed his eyes, the motion itself sealing away the vaults of his mind as darkness filled his vision. One after another the ‘vault’ doors slammed shut. Each attempt by the legilimens was cut short, a door slammed in their face until every door in his mind was closed.

In his mind, he allowed one thought to be read by the legilimens. A single quote from a favorite novel of his: “The way is shut. It was made by those who are Dead, and the Dead keep it, until the time comes. The way is shut.”

The essence of true beauty was not something Meiyu initially understood. More often than not, she would spend time contemplating trivial matters, analysing others and their humane responses conveyed through facial expressions — something she had the inability of doing. Within the Knight family, beauty was not the beholder of the eye. It was conveyed through mannerisms, elaborate gowns and most importantly, social standing. Succeed in all three elements, and your beauty would shine amongst observers.

Carefully coined through birth and familial ties, the wealth that was associated with the Knights granted Meiyu access to the most elaborate experiences that most her age would not fathom experiencing. Most notably, etiquette classes with an esteemed tutor which would shape her into the perfect debutante once she reaches the of eighteen. Tainted by the mixing of blood had only halted the experience which would come at a later point, serving as a gateway into a new experience — mixing with pureblood children at the family galas hosted by the matriarch of the Knight family; Meiyu's maternal grandmother. Following her disastrous first appearance at a ball, an intervention staged as etiquette classes soon began to take precedent during Meiyu's free time, often falling on Sunday afternoons. Initially, these classes served fruitful in shaping Meiyu into a young girl of grace, but, the first session had been the most memorable.

During their first meeting, the pureblooded tutor who initially had shown recluse in tutoring a young girl who's blood had been tainted as impure, was met with a young doe-eyed Meiyu. She had commented that Meiyu was far too beautiful to be a half-blood, a comment which at the time, held no weight to the young girl who failed to understand the complexities of deeply rooted blood racism. It naturally to no avail, with the young girl spending time chattering away with the young teacher who adorned the girl, admiring her delicate beauty and at times, questioning why such lessons were needed. That very teacher instilled the latin idiom In pulchritudine inest potentia Beauty contains power within it. in Meiyu, providing some insight into her own beauty, later setting in stone the reflection she saw as she glared at her features, noting each distinctive mark on her face.

Eyes akin to a feline, it conveyed her true emotion, betraying her usual stoic expression. Irregardless, it served as the most fruitful feature and ability, allowing Meiyu to truly gaze at those around her. Noting their unease and longer than necessary gaze towards her, uncomfortable with the lingering glares upon her delicate features. Such gazes had not forced her to engross time into making herself more beautiful through the use of makeup, instead, it came from control and her inner desire to portray herself as ideal figure of perfection. Encompassing femininity through her sense of style which only accentuated her alluring persona, perfectly highlighting the beauty she eluded which would only aid her in standing out amongst others. Her feline eyes and impassive features concealed a volatile storm within. She never need cosmetics or enchantments — her poise, sense of style, and inherent allure drew attention naturally. Her presence alone could command a room, turn heads and silence voices.

Inadvertently serving as a facade from her horrible and peculiar personality because beautiful girls weren't mean, nor did they have anger issues. She now understood that beauty disarmed people, quickly weaponising the expectations it created. Meiyu's beauty cloaked her darker nature, an eerie contradiction between appearance and intention. Her beauty served as a mere facade from her true nature because beautiful girls weren't mean, nor did they have anger issues.

It was never vanity she sought, it was power and control.

Both attainable merely by her beauty.
