The small break between failing and restarting the second lap seemed to be doing Quentin some good. He felt as he had in the first lap. He was flying across the water, splashing and probably leaving a terrible tread in his wake. But he was oblivious to the swimmers behind and in front of him. He wasn't sure if they were faltering or thriving. He was concentrating on making his limbs move fast.

He wasn't sure if he liked swimming or not. He always enjoyed physical activities, but this lacked a lot of drama. Quentin supposed that people could drown, but that wasn't the type of drama he craved. Swimmers just kept their heads down; there wasn't even a chance to throw banter at each other. He was also pretty sure it was incorrect to cannonball into the water as he had done. But nonetheless, the exercise was great, and maybe when he finally made it out of the water, there would be time to riff with the other racers. When they all got to land, there might even be a bit of friendly drama. Quentin used these thoughts to propel him forward.

Drat. Della failed the third lap. She did quite poorly, to be honest. She tried to think of something kind to say to herself, but it really was just dreadful. On the first obstacle she encountered, she didn't evade it at all. She hit it straight on, causing her to flip underwater, get water up her nose, get her hair tangled around her neck, and when she finally made it to the surface, she swam in the wrong direction. It took her forever to realize that the swimmers around her were going the other way.

Della had never been competitive before Hogwarts, but that was before she had found something she was good at and won at. She tried to repeat a mantra in her head: this isn't broom racing, this isn't broom racing, this isn't broom racing. Now that she had failed a lap, the mantra didn't help. Now that she had failed a lap, she wanted nothing more than to be in the lead. Now that she had failed a lap, she deserted all those thoughts about a "friendly camp game" and "swimming wasn't her strong suit." She wanted nothing more than to win.

She set herself straight and soldiered on. Determined more than ever to actually evade the obstacles this time.

Winning the race was not looking promising to Ayako. She'd been near the middle - or even back - of the pack the entire time. Part of that had been because she wasn't a strong swimmer, but it was also partially due to the age difference between her and the other students.

Knowing that she wasn't likely to win, Ayako instead focused on pacing herself and finishing. Finishing a triathlon was still no easy feat, and she knew people that trained for years to complete similar competitions, so as long as she finished, she didn't feel too terribly bad about it.

As she focused on the target, the side of the ship they were meant to climb, she hardly noticed Chi falling behind. Committing her efforts to the climb ahead, she shot a quick glance back to her friend and called out a few words of encouragement.

"Stomp these foreigners into the tides, Chi-chan!" she yelled encouragingly.

Then she focused on finding a good foothold. Her hands gripped whatever could help to propel her upwards, pulling her body as quickly as she dared, lest she fall. Her arms brought her higher and higher, and - even though her legs were burning from the swim and her chest was filled with sharp pains - she attempted to steady her breathing for the climb.

Hopefully she'd make it all the way up.

Dodging moving obstacles while swimming had, as could have been expected, been a little different from dodging stationary obstacles while flying, but he'd managed just fine. This was fun, he got to push himself, face new challenges, compare his performance with other people. He enjoyed swimming, wished he could do it more often, there was usually just not much of an opportunity to do it. If they held more events like this, Raph would consider joining these trips for more reasons than just broom racing.

At this point, Raph had secured himself a spot at the front of the bulk of participants, although of course, things could shift at any moment, depending on how the next challenge went. Raphael pulled himself out of the water upon reaching the ship, climbing on board and pushing his dripping hair back to get it out of his eyes. Blinking into the sunlight, he squinted at what lay ahead. Running was the next part, they'd said. Raphael had picked up running as a hobby last summer, and had since then developed an almost daily routine that he had kept up even here, although he was still figuring out a good trail for his morning runs. He was looking forward to this.

Was the serious? Okay. Okay. Redoing the round! Cool! It's not like she was too mad, just one lap behind. It was just a few obstacles. Really. She could do this and she wouldn't get angry. This time she was so tense, like a cheetah. Maybe that wasn't the best comparison for this given situation. But every muscle in her body was ready to move as soon as the whistle blew. She looked from the water to the people with the whistle. Then she looked back to the water. This didn't have to be so hard, she was just tired last round obviously. She kept repeating this in her head. She wasn't failing but instead she was taking a break. This round was when she was back in the game 100 percent. She leaped into the water and swam until her chest told her to breath and even then she pushed until her lungs screamed in protest. She didn't want to risk losing her momentum, and she was focused on the obstacles of course. HOWEVER. SOMEHOW. SHE FAILED.

AGAIN.

she suppressed a scream under water when she realized the round was over. She looked like she was on the verge of tears. She considered quitting. One more round.

ROUND TWO LEVEL ONE
Kick, kick, kick, kick. That was all her body knew how to do right now. Kick her legs and use her arms to propel her forward. She was definitely growing even more tired as time went on, but she tried her absolute hardest to persevere and complete the lap. She wanted to win, definitely, winning would be ideal. But she supposed it wouldn't be the end of the world if she had to give up halfway through because she was just too tired, life would go on and it was only really a fun game at summer camp. But for now, even though she was feeling a bit fatigued, it wasn't dire enough for her to need to stop swimming. So she kept going.

And finally, she had finished the lap, successfully managing to avoid all of the muggle obstacles that were thrown her way. She was pretty proud of herself, honestly, even if her chest was rising and falling rapidly from the three laps she has done around the ship. She was now successfully onto round 2, which was running. She liked running, but did she like running after she'd just swam 3 laps around a ship? She wasn't entirely sure, but still, she had to try her hardest, didn't she? She could do this. She could. It was all going to be perfectly fine. Now all she had to do was climb up onto the ship.

They'd managed to clear level two of swimming.
They’d managed to clear level two of swimming!
It was both a relief and encouragement. If they could clear one hurle, they could clear it all, it was just a matter of taking small steps and making progress.
They could do it. They could definitely finish it!

A quick glance around, attempting to evaluate their position. They were definitely not leading, but they were not last. At least not just yet.
Aryaan had lost track of the other Champions, and could not tell how far ahead they had ended up. It could not be too much further ahead.
He hoped.
It wasn’t fatigue that was dragging Aryaan down just yet, like some other students might have started to feel. but rather his own frustrations at not being able to keep up. That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing – too many people treated marathons like sprints and burnt out long before the end. Aryaan intended to finish, not necessarily finish first.
But he wouldn’t complain if he managed to pull ahead of a champion or two.

“Keep up?” was the eventual retort to his schoolmate, faux-incredulousness not quite making its mark between gasps of breathing. “Do you think you could lose me that easily, now?”

SWIMMING LEVEL 3
Nessie kept swimming, and it was enough to get through the second round this time. She didn’t really think she’d done anything differently this time, but perhaps it had been her encouragement of the other competitors that had driven her to swim fast enough to make the lap time – or maybe the pace had been relaxed, she wasn’t sure. Either way, she didn’t need to concern herself with that now, because her task could shift to the next lap of swimming.

The question was: did she even want to complete it? If Nessie finished the swimming she’d have to move onto the other rounds, and they sounded significantly less fun to her. She’d be happy to swim forever – or, at least until she got hungry for the next meal, which was basically forever in a twelve-year-old’s eyes – but running? No thank you.

And so she kept on at a pace that was comfortable for her, not rushing, just having a good time and seeing where she’d end up. As long as there were still others swimming with her, Nessie didn’t see a need to hurry. Perhaps she’d even make a few friends? Although that hadn’t been working out so far in the competition, so maybe she should give up the idea and swim faster so she could work on that later?

Frankly, even he couldn’t understand how he’d surpassed the rest of the contestants. Of course, athletics was his strong suit, but to cruise, in a moment’s notice, from the comfortable fifth or so to first place (or at least tied there with another)? Perhaps the rest had merely exhausted themselves. Lysander would have felt the same too, his own limbs bringing on a familiar burn, had he not been so stoked himself. Grabbing onto the ship, he ripped his goggles away from his face and planted them atop flattened hair. He could not help but to bask in his temporary victory, attention only swayed to a second head breaking the surface beside him.

Funnily enough, it was Aurelia, earning herself an admirable regard. Unacceptable! And to think she’d started the event downplaying her own abilities. Now look at her, keeping up with him and leading the pack, together. “What did I tell you before, eh?” Lysander reminded her, smile lines deepening as Aurelia gave him a playful splash. Sure, you’re strong. It was initially for reassurance sake, a boy telling a girl what she needed to hear. Now there was a proven truth to the statement, not that he ever doubted her before. Dodging another splash, he pulled himself onto the ship and outstretched his hand to assist her onboard, if needed. “Are you sure?”

SHIT I ALMOST FORGOT HADRIAN. pax, is hadrian on your list.... or did i double post hmm..

Hadrian eased his way through the water, it was simple enough dodging the colour floats that bobbed on the water... but the people however, crowding every which way made it much a challenge to move forwards. They were in the way, but Hadrian did not mind taking it slow again. After all, he was preserving his energy for the climb up the ship. The sun was still gleaming and hot above in the cloudless sky, and he was sure he'd get a sunburnt regardless of a layer of sun block or not.

He noticed the two in front of course, the first at the ship. None other than Aurelia and her boyfriend. Let them have their fun, and he would have his own. It was their agreement after all. Continuing, he pushed through the water and the crowd. Reaching the ships side, he ascended skillfully, using whichever dents and flat horizontal surface of the wood to scale and climb upwards. His arms were aching quite a bit. But that wouldn't stop him. But the Ilvermorny should know that while his strength might as well be unlimited, his stamina was less so. Regardless, that was a realisation for later, for now, he continued, vying for the first position.
