Slightly taller than many of her peers, standing 5' 0" tall, she has long curly fiery auburn hair that she prefers to wear in braids, pale skinned marked with freckles. Due to her time being home-schooled by her mother, she loves to cook, and to work in the kitchen with ingredients, and tend her herb garden. Sitting home nights watching her younger siblings while her parents are working, she took to reading anything she could find in her family library - books ranging from Floo maintenance, potion and ingredient prep, the odd Muggle cookbook her mother brought home, and some old charms textbooks from when her parents were in school. Madeline never quite fit in with the other children around her. Her father did not have a glamorous occupation - working for the Ministry in the Floo Maintenance department. James Howard (father - a pureblood wizard) works with the Ministry of Magic in the Floo network maintenance department. He often travels from place to place fixing issues with hearths and other Floo locations when necessary. Isla Howard (mother - muggle born) works at home during the day as a homemaker and home school mom. Madeline's mother was a witch, and quite an accomplished one Madeline thought, but according to her mother, the most important thing she could do was to teach her children and be a wife and mother - that was why she stayed home rather than going out to work for the Ministry, or some other profession. Madeline's own mother had taught her this when she was younger. Isla's mother was a muggle, but Madeline had never met any of that part of her mother's family. Shortly after Madeline's mother had been accepted into Hogwarts, her father and mother were involved in a terrible accident and both perished. As an only child and no grandparents on either side, Isla was blessed by a local wizarding family that was willing to take her in until she graduated from Hogwarts. It was due to her muggle upbringing that Isla loved to cook, and would bring home random muggle recipe books. She made sure not to interact too much with the muggle world - it seemed to help with the loss of her family to just close off that part of her - with the only exceptions being cooking, and staying at home just like her own mother. The family works hard, but with six mouths to feed on a Floo Maintenance Tech's salary, the family struggles to make it. Due to this Madeline does not have any friends outside of her family - siblings and some cousins from a neighboring village. She tends to spend most of her time in the kitchen with her mum, or reading through the family's small library of history books - and when possible getting Owl delivered library books.

When I was 8, on my father's 40th birthday, my mum and I were in the kitchen preparing his favorite birthday dish - venison stew. Mum and I were working on preparing the ingredients first like she always told me. I was in charge of cutting the venison roast into the smaller cuts so mum could put them in the pot to brown. I had completed cutting all of the venison, placed it in a bowl and was walking around the counter when my younger brother crawled in front of me looking at the toad he had just caught. I tripped over his crawling form and lost control of the bowl and venison. As it flew out of my hands and toward the ground I knew my mum would be upset, and my da would be disappointed at losing the costly roast. All I could do was scream and reach for the bowl - and to my great wonder and surprise the bowl with the venison froze in the middle of the air. My mum turned around after hearing me cry out, saw the bowl and started to holler from my da to come in and see what had just happened. Mum grabbed the bowl out of the air and finished the stew. They were so excited that I had finally shown some magic that I got the largest piece of venison that day.

Noctua Ryderion Zephyr was born to a squib mother of unknown identity in a muggle hospital. Said anonymous mother immediately surrendered all parental rights upon birth, and with the (muggle) father undetermined, Noctua was declared a legal orphan.

About half a year later, he was officially adopted by an infertile muggle couple by the names of Eloise and William Davis, his last name remained the same, however, as they wanted him to make that choice himself when he grew old enough. And sure enough, on the day after his eighth birthday, he was sat down and told the truth of how he had been adopted. Surprisingly enough, Noctua's opinion of his parents remained unchanged, and when asked the question of whether or not he wanted to uncover the identity of his biological mother, he very maturely refused. He did, however, eventually decide to keep his name.

Noctua, who at the time obviously did not know he was a wizard, initially assumed that the very strangely dressed person outside of his home who was talking about some strange place called ‘Hogwash’ was either attempting to scam or kidnap him, or scam and kidnap him. Noctua only accepted that the person was telling the truth when, with a few funny words followed by a flourish of a strangely intricate stick that one could only assume was some sort of magic wand, the coffee table started levitating.

First Instance of Magic:
Reducio
It was the day after Noctua's fifth birthday, it was nearing night, and he was in a surprisingly empty playground in a place called 'battery park' (Battersea Park, London), climbing a playset, because why not? In one hand he held the ear of a plush dog he had very creatively named Kitty, and another gripped the ridges engraved into the roof of the playset. Suddenly, his grip faltered, and he fell.

Noctua braced for impact, curling in on himself. But when his freefall inevitably ended, he didn't smack onto the hard ground as expected, instead he landed on something soft. After a while, he reluctantly opened his eyes, and to his astonishment, under him were one.. two.. three.. four.. five, five identical Kittys!

He blinked, dumbfounded and bewildered, before promptly deciding that Santa was terribly early this year, gathering up the Kittys and labeling each of them as Kitty Jr, Kitty Jr Jr, and so on. The next morning when he went to show his parents, however, only the original remained, and all the juniors had vanished into thin air.

- A FIOM cannot be intentional (ie. here, your character wishes for his plush to come back) ! Accidental magic is unintentional and can happen for one of three reasons: it just happens, it happens in response to danger as an act of self-preservation, or it happens in response to a strong emotion. This event must be prior to age 11 and it must take place in Wales, England, Ireland, or Scotland. Please describe such an incident of accidental magic that happened to your character as well as their age when it happened. What emotion did they feel and how did they feel when it was happening? How did they feel after it happened? How did your character's parents react? Some examples of accidental magic are setting a hat on fire when angry, falling from a great height with no injuries, or randomly sneezing bubbles.

The RP-style text below explains how Milo has always had hunches (tying into the first ability of the Seer special race) and how he has explained those away as OCD, deja vu and deja reve until he discovered that his great-grandmother Andrea was listed in a genealogy of known Seers.

The idea is that Milo strongly suspects that he is a Seer, but is purposefully keeping this under wraps. He fears he will suffer the same fate as his great-grandmother Andrea who wound up totally ostracized from the family and talked about as some weird crackpot. This ties into the character description/concept of Milo always being on guard and desperately wanting to be seen and thought of as normal. This is a fundamental reason for that behavior.
Milo has always had hunches and intuitions about people. For the longest time he thought that it was perfectly normal to have unbidden thoughts about not crossing the street here but there. The school doctor suspected a mild case of OCD, and so that's what he called it. Like that one time he took a long way around to his clarinet lessons because going that way was better and he avoided a car accident. He kept telling himself that he wasn't weird, that he just had mild OCD, and for a while that was fine.

It wasn't until he had already demonstrated his first instance of magic that he became more keenly aware that his hunches weren't like other people's hunches. Their hunches were more random, and when they were wrong, people simply forgot. His hunches were a lot more accurate. It was like when the phone rings and you already know who's calling without having even seen the display. He never knew these things far in advance though. It just kind of happened in each moment, less of a precognition and more of a recognition. At times he felt as though he had already seen or dreamt certain moments which was written of as deja vu and deja reve. It was perfectly normal according to his parents, everyone had those. Maybe they just said that because they sensed he didn't want to be different, he just wanted to be Milo, just Milo.

But when someone shows up at your doorstep telling you you're a wizard, all of that changes. Milo wondered if perhaps his hunches were part of being a wizard, though the hogwarts representative hadn't mentioned anything about it. The word Seer didn't become known to him until he visited Diagon Alley for the first time and entered into a shop selling crystal balls.

Among the crystal balls, tea cups, books on astrology and palmistry, and piles of incense, he found a small book containing the genealogy of known Seer families. The text was dull and dense, not the sort of thing any eleven-year-old would have any interest in reading.

And yet he had a hunch that he should.

Somewhere among the pages he encountered the name of his great-grandmother on his mother's side, Andrea, a woman whose name he'd only heard in passing once or twice during Christmas dinners. That same day, after his shopping was done, Milo cautiously inquired after his great-grandmother and his mother told him what she knew. Andrea had something of a reputation for being odd and having vivid dreams, and apparently she had been largely ostracized from the family for her increasingly strange behaviours. One time she had as good as predicted another family member's death, but when it occured she was not respected for her foresight, but mistrusted and accussed of having some part in the death instead.

"Why do you ask?" his mother said after they'd ordered a desert in the Leaky Cauldron.

"Oh," Milo said, shrugging. "I was just curious. I saw her name in some book and that reminded me of her." A lie, but an easy one. He avoided mentioning Andrea ever since, not wanting to arouse anyone's suspicions. Did they even know? What if anyone found out that quite possibly, their son, their little nephew, their cousin had the same sickness? Milo kept his mouth shut. I'm not weird, he kept telling himself, I just have deja vu sometimes, that's all.

Character Backstory:
Reducio

Appearance
At eleven years old, Milo stands about 149cm tall. He has fair skin, light blue eyes, and a thick mop of tousled light-brown hair, carefully arranged to seem careless. Unlike most boys his age, Milo is already quite self conscious about his appearance and makes an effort to be tidy and clean. As a result, a faint smell of slightly too much cheap shampoo and deodorant clings to him. Though chipper and carefree, there is often something aggressively guarded about him, like he's always switched on. It's as though he has already decided, before you've even opened your mouth, whether you can be trusted or not.

Family
  • Melissa Meilke (mother, muggle)
  • Arthur Hartman (father, muggle)
History
If one were to trace Milo's family history several centuries back, one would find wizards on both his mother's and father's side. Edmund Hartman, born in the early 18th century was the last known wizard on his father's side while Marion Meilke was the last known witch on his mother's side, all the way back in the 16th century. Neither Milo nor his direct parents had any knowledge that there was magical blood in their family. In fact, they had never even heard of magic before the representative from Hogwarts showed up one day.

Milo is a boy who desperately wants to be normal, but isn't. You see, it's got nothing to do with magic and everything to do with his mother's episodes. He loves his mother, she's warm and kind and funny, but sometimes she gets confused. Her episodes don't happen often, only a few times a year, but he's always watching for them, always bracing himself for having to cover for her. Her voice might go flat a few hours before, or she might zone out, barely registering anything around her, like she isn't there anymore. There isn't any rhyme or reason to it, but the last time it happened she had gone out in her bathrobes into the backyard of their flat rifling through the bins and chucking waste over her shoulder. She doesn't remember doing it and neither does she remember what she was looking for.

Sometimes Milo worries he's got the same thing. Sometimes he zones out a bit and gets lost in daydreams, then snaps back to reality. It never lasts more than a few seconds though. He hasn't told anyone, but his teachers notice.

His dad thinks he shouldn't be with her, that it's not good for him to be with her. His parents have been divorced for years and the court battle over guardianship still hasn't been settled. He likes his dad, but not the rest of that side of the family. They talk about his mother the same way the schoolyard bullies do, whispering things about her behind her back, treating her like she's cracked. He hates the feeble smiles and pitiful looks he gets from them at Christmas.

Milo tries very hard to be normal. He keeps his school uniform and shoes clean, he does his homework on time, he gets good grades. On the weekends he plays footie and on Wednesdays he has clarinet lessons and he's alright at both. He'd be a model student if he hadn't got a slew of demerits to his name for losing control. When he gets mad, he gets feral. He's punched several kids, kicked a few others, even bit one. Shouldn't have done that, because now he gets called "loon", "spaz", or "nutter" behind his back.

It gets to him, not just when it's directed at his mother, but because it cuts deeper than any of his classmates might ever suspect. He hasn't mentioned it to anyone, but a lot of strange things have happened to him. Like that one time he got into a fight, punched another boy, and the lad was launched clean off his feet and sent flying into the fence. Or what about that morning after a particularly bad episode? When he came downstairs to find the kettle already boiling and the radio on, playing his favourite song. He was sure he hadn't touched them but tried not to think about it too much.

Then there are the funny feelings he sometimes gets. Go left, not right, don't take the bus today, stay away from that man. He tries to tune out the little voice in his head that says those things, but he can't deny that the little voice is often right. Sometimes he thinks he's slowly going insane like his mother, and it frightens him. He tries to ignore it.

Ignoring it became very hard when the representative from Hogwarts showed on their doorstep. He didn't believe it and still struggled to even when magic had been demonstrated to him. His mother was so pleased and proud that he tried to be happy for her, but he wasn't happy. Him? A wizard? It sounded completely mad. He wasn't happy to leave his home for Hogwarts, to abandon his mother. He just wants to fit in and be normal - why can't he be normal?

Milo is an only child currently residing in a small flat apartment in Edinburgh Scotland with his mother. His parents are divorced since as long as he can remember. His father lives in London and Milo visits him during the holidays.

When Milo was nine he got teased by another boy at school about his mother and punched him. Somehow the boy went sailing through the air and ended up slumped against the fence several feet from where they'd been standing. Milo has never been able to explain this because he knows he's not that strong

Katherine is the only child of a pureblood family. She was born and raised in Gravesend, England on August 8, 2014.
Her parents, Ernest and Francine, run a successful potions business, Silverend Brews. Her father grows many ingredients in their family greenhouse, and her mother is the primary potions master. They specialize in household concoctions. Though the town is largely comprised of Muggles, they've managed to create a loyal customer base of local witches and wizards, as well as owl orders. Katherine grew up around the shop, helping tend to the various plants and aid her parents in their potions.
Though many children may relish in the idea of being around a shop of such magic and wonder, Katherine found it stifling. The meticulous brews and many, many breakable bottles felt like a cage she couldn't escape from. And as her parents decided to homeschool her rather than send her to a preparatory school. So much of her time was spent in the back room of the shop, finishing lessons and wishing to be just about anywhere else. She is always moving about, directing her attention to anything under the sun. The only time she seems to sit still is when a book rests in her hand.
She never took to her parents’ love of potions or herbology. Potions required too much precision and it seemed more math than magic. And she would much rather keep her hands clean of dirt and whatever else seemed to linger in that greenhouse. What she does love is research. Give her a topic and a library, and she'll seek to make herself an expert. She’s spent hours imagining where she could go and how to get there. She dreams of exploring Egyptian tombs and climbing mountains and whatever else might give her the chance to explore the world outside her small, English town.
One might think this would lead her to Ravenclaw, like both of her parents. On the contrary, she isn’t called to knowledge for its own sake. And she certainly doesn’t want to spend seven years learning magic just to end up in her parents’ potions shop. She intends to put herself on the map. She’s still just determining which one. And she's hoping being in Slytherin will help her get there.

First Instance of Magic:
Reducio
At the age of four, Katherine was engaging in an elaborate tea party with several of her stuffed animals. This was a common pastime, meant to mimic her mother’s gathering with friends while fulfilling her need for company without siblings or nearby friends. The entire collective was elaborate, with a real tea set (a gift from a doting grandmother to the chagrin of her parents). However, she became frustrated at the lack of adequate participation on the part of her fluffy friends. Their tea sat untouched, and it was up to her to lead the conversations. She grew more and more displeased at their inaction. In the mind of a toddler, this was nothing short of betrayal. In her frustration, she yelled at her stuffed bear, Mr. Fluff. “Do something,” she cried. To her surprise, Mr. Bear's teacup lifted itself twenty inches high and then fell down, never spilling a drop of tea. Assuming that Mr. Bear had decided to play his part after all, Katherine went on with her tea, not thinking much of the incident until she mentioned it to her mother, who grew very excited.

With their marriage arranged when they were seventeen, Alastair and Galene Ahlstrom wed immediately following their graudation. One year into their marriage, they would have their first son, Aurelius. Their second son, Cassiel, wouldn't come until nine years later.

Though times have changed, the hearts and minds of the Ahlstroms have not, and the family quietly pushed anti-Muggle rhetoric onto their children at a young age. Eager to please them, Cassiel would parrot their spiel, not truly aware of what he was saying.

Rather than his parents who he felt the most kinship with, it was his paternal great-great-aunt, Cosima, with whom he was closest to. Her unabashed interest in the macabre and morbid, as well as her lack of disdain towards Muggles, made her quite the black sheep in the family, and Cassiel admired her easygoing confidence in spite of the family's lack of understanding towards her. It was she who gifted him his copy of Death Omens: What to Do When You Know the Worst is Coming when he was seven years old, a decision that his parents disapproved of despite Cassiel's insistence that he liked the book. Ironically, it would be his witnessing of her death, from a safe distance, from Dragon Pox that would grant him the ability to see Thestrals, a creature she'd always admired.

She died when he was ten, just one year shy of his first year at Hogwarts. Her death meant a year of loneliness for Cassiel, who'd been left to his own devices after the birth of his baby sister a year before, and it was a feeling he hoped would be vanquished after his enrolment. However, more disappointment was in the cards for him, as the Sorting Hat would end a four-generation streak of Ahlstrom Slytherins by sorting him into Gryffindor.

First Instance of Magic:
Reducio
Born into a family whose eldest child showed a high level of aptitude for magic at a very young age, Cassiel had to fight for his parents' attention, who were often too preoccupied with their much more impressive firstborn son to pay mind to their less spectacular secondborn son. Their preference for Aurelius was the catalyst for Cassiel's first instance of magic; after his fourth birthday celebration was interrupted by an announcement from Aurelius, who, at just thirteen years old, reported that he successfully performed Expelliarmus on a friend, Cassiel unintentionally made the bespoke chandelier that hung in their dining room explode, crystal by crystal. After casting a disgruntled Reparo, his parents would click their tongues and comment on how Aurelius had been three when he first displayed his magical abilities.

It was the 15th of January, 2014. That day had been a particularly chilly day in the Netherlands, and now it was an especially cold night. On this date, just a few minutes before midnight, Isabelle Vos gave birth to a baby girl.
Lenthe Marloes Vos
Although her parents were smitten from the moment they saw her, Lenthe’s siblings had a hard time adjusting to the new baby. Mees, who always disliked when anything didn’t meet his exact expectations, thought her eyes were too bright and her head was too shiny. Ester, who was quite a sensitive young girl, cried every time Lenthe cried. Which was often.
But over time, the twins grew more and more attached to their sister, and they would become an inseparable trio.
Lenthe, of course, didn’t remember anything from those early years.

In the autumn of 2016, the Vos family went through a huge change. They sold their farm in Drenthe and moved to Isabelle’s home country: England. They settled in an apartment in London, where Isabelle had family living nearby. Isabelle started working a new job at the Ministry of Magic, which she barely ever talked about. Lenthe’s father Sebastiaan, who was a muggle, continued working as a freelance illustrator.
Because of their muggle background, Sebastiaan insisted that the children should go to muggle school until they would be accepted into Hogwarts. The children had already been raised bilingual because of their mother, so they had no trouble speaking English at school. Lenthe loved school from the very first day. As a very curious and bubbly girl, she had no trouble with her studies or making friends. However, as she got older, Lenthe started getting bored at school, and began getting into trouble for daydreaming in class and pulling pranks on her classmates and teachers. She got a reputation for being somewhat of a class clown.

At home, Lenthe loved playing board games and painting with her father. The two of them were very close. It was from him that Lenthe had inherited the more quiet, dreamy side of her personality. For her ninth birthday, Lenthe’s father gifted her a book with facts about sea animals that would remain her favourite book for a long time. The book fostered her interest in non-magical creatures and muggle books.

Lenthe’s first instance of accidental magic occurred in the winter she turned five years old. There was a snowball fight going on at school, and there were two teams. One of the girls in Lenthe's team was yelling at her for getting hit and losing them points. When another snowball was thrown at Lenthe, To Lenthe’s surprise it started changing direction, and it hit the yelling girl instead.

Richard is the oldest of three children, born to a Scottish Mediwizard (Maigaidh), and a French Ministry of Magic (Diplomacy Dep.) employee (Ambroise). As he was born in Montrose (harbor city), he and his sisters are very close to their Scottish family members as well as their French ones, settled in the magical section of Bordeaux (harbor city).

Growing up, he had received lessons from a very strict but passionate preceptor, Monsieur Seignet. While his parents were busy working long hours, he and his sisters explored the countryside and the magical cities with Mr. Seignet to better understand the inner-workings of the magical world. Sure, Richard can be mischievous, but his preceptor - patient as a Saint -, took great care of their mentorship. It is also thanks to him that Richard has developed a keen interest in magical language. He hopes to master most if not all of them one day.

Richard shares a very close bond with each member of his family. Might as well say they really are the center of his universe. The profound warmth and Scottish humor of his mother, and the very street-smart mind of his father are always a source of inspiration, for a boy who watched them come back home, completely drained from their respective missions. His sisters, Eloïse (7) and Daisy (4) - although incredible pains in the derrière - bring a lot of laughter and cheekiness in a world that he first felt lonesome, and heavy on responsibilities.

When he was around 7 years-old, Richard and his then 2 years-old sister Eloïse were quietly playing in the living room while their mother was watching over them, reading a book. At some point, Eloïse grabbed one of Richard's toys and forcibly threw it against a wooden table. Because the toy was fragile, the idea of it being broken angered Richard, who, after yelling at his sister, crossed his arms, his heartbeat going wild. As his temper flared, a burst of wind closed the doors and windows shut abruptly, without breaking the glasses in millions of dangerous pieces.

Even as a child, she was considered different: she spoke little and often got lost in her thoughts, mostly to escape the reality around her. The other children called her "weird," and over time, that word became a truth she carried deep within her.
She was often bullied at school because of her very reserved nature; there was a group of children, led by a girl, who mocked her every chance they got.
Kiara had never had friends with whom she could share secrets or laughs, so she learned to fill that void on her own, mostly through the stories she read. She read everything she could find, but her favorite genres were romance and dark novels, fantasy, and historical novels. There was also a forest behind her house, where she went almost every day and where she felt most at ease. She always sat in her usual spot, under an old tree on the shore of a small, hidden lake, and spent hours there, sometimes reading, other times listening to music.
Just when she thought she was a normal child, a magical episode occurred to Kiara that made her reconsider. One day, while she was sitting on her usual bench in the schoolyard, the same group of children approached her, snatching the book from her hands and taunting her again with the same words. Kiara then lost patience and pushed the little girl, not expecting her to fall so far from a normal push. The other children were all speechless and ran away.

Kiara's first magical act occurred in the playground of her old school in Brixton, Sudbourne Primary School, at the age of 8, in a fit of rage. Since she was a child, Kiara had been quiet and always kept to herself, making her an easy target. The children teased her, taking her silence as a good reason to mock her. That afternoon, she was in the schoolyard, during lunch hour, sitting on a bench with a book in her hands. Suddenly, a small group of children approached her, led by a little girl who particularly enjoyed teasing her. She snatched the book from her hands and began teasing her, using harsh words that Kiara already knew. Kiara tried to ignore her, lowering her gaze, but the girl continued, pushing her gently with a hand on her shoulder. When Kiara's patience ran out, she jumped up, her eyes full of anger. She didn't scream, she didn't say anything. She reacted on pure instinct: to push the little girl. But she immediately realized it wasn't a normal push. The moment she pushed her, the girl was thrown backward several meters, falling to the ground much further than a simple push would have allowed. The other children froze instantly, and silence fell over the courtyard. No one understood what had happened. Not even Kiara. She remained still, speechless; she had never felt anything like it. The girl got up, frightened, and, along with the others, moved away from her.
Kiara never expected that, moments later, a man in strange clothes would suddenly appear near her. The group of children had already moved away and was no longer visible, so no one could see that the man had pulled out a strange wooden object and was uttering strange words. The strangest thing was that the children, who had been so scared of her after that episode, seemed to remember nothing the next day, treating her exactly as before.

- I am aware you have made edits, however your First Instance of Magic is too powerful, particularly the 'invisible force suddenly extinguishing flames'. There cannot be an in 'invisble force', in this instance, and this would fall under a FIOM occurring in a protective measure.

- Thank you for making the edits requested, we would still need three things regarding your first instance of magic : the age at which it occurred, the place (must be in wales, england, scotland, ireland), and since your first instance of magic had muggle witnesses, we would also need a mention regarding delegates of the Ministry erasing the muggle's memory!
- We would also need your encyclopedia to feature your first instance of magic, so please copy paste it there once you have made the edits!

Cassandra Tarot was born to a loving family on December 12th, 2013. Her parents, Michael and Hekate Tarot, were nurturing and cared for their child unconditionally. Her father came from a pure-blood family and knew the pressures that kind of world brought on a child. He left his lineage to be with Cassie’s mother, who was a muggle. They settled down and decided to live a quiet life in London, tucked away in the corners of society. Growing up, Cassie was surrounded by both the mundane and the magical. Some days, she’d go to school or the theatre with her mother. Others, her dad would read her bedtime stories from the Wizarding World and re-enact them with his own unique charm. It was a strange back and forth, and she was taught at a young age that she wasn’t allowed to talk about her father’s “stories” to her classmates. She was enrolled in a private school, another way her parents hid their family away. Despite her upbeat demeanor, Cassandra was a lonely child, something her parents could not fix. She was an only child, and other kids her age had seemed to sense something strange about her before she did. So when own abilities were realized, and her father began to regard her tales of Hogwarts, she found herself practically unable to wait for her own letter. As the years passed, she always peeked outside of the windows of her house, trying to spot an owl that would lead her to a life that was full of friends and magic.

First Instance of Magic:
Reducio
Cass tends to get upset at times. Letting her emotions get out of control is a bad habit of hers, despite how she’s convinced otherwise about it. It’s how her First Instance of Magic happened, an outburst at her old academy school when she was seven years old.

It was after class had let out, and everyone was walking out to head home. Cassandra had been arguing with an older classmate; about what, she had forgotten. They clearly weren’t taking her seriously, which was fair, because of her age. At the time, however, it hadn’t felt fair.

The argument had escalated on her end to the point where she was waving her hands around and exclaiming loudly for the entire courtyard to hear. The older child simply scoffed at her, turning to walk away. How dare they? She wasn’t done talking about this yet!

Cassandra had meant to grab them. To make them turn back around so they could keep fighting. She was too young to understand how, well, childish she was being. All she could process how frustrated she felt and how unfair they were being to her. She reached out, attempting to grab their shoulder. It was a surprise to her when the other kid seemed to lurch forward out of nowhere, stumbling and tripping into the school fountain.

“She pushed me!” They wailed, and Cassie watched helplessly as their clothes and bag began to soak. She hadn’t pushed them. She hadn’t even touched them!

Had she?

All of the kids around them were yelling about how she shoved them. Clearly, all they saw was the other kid tripping. She reached out a hand to help them up, suddenly feeling a strange sense of guilt. “Are you alright-?”

They smacked her hand away. “Don’t touch me! I don’t want your help!”

Cassie flinched back, disgruntled and ashamed for some reason. Soon enough, the teachers still on campus were alerted and came out to help the other kid and escorted them both to the Headteacher’s office.

“I didn’t push them, though!” Cassie yelled as she was dragged by the wrist. None of the staff listened to her, however. Most of them were doting on the older child who was now full on sobbing. When they got to the office, both of them were asked what happened. Cassie, obviously, refused the fact that she even touched the other kid. Eventually, their parents were called up to the school (her father refrained from using magic in their house, due to her mother’s job requiring her to make calls every now and then and overall inconspicuousness).

Cassandra’s father, Michael, had arrived in his best muggle attire, sheepishly greeting the other adults. After being explained the situation, he pulled Cassie aside with a serious expression. “Why did you push them?”

“I didn’t…!”

“You know you can tell me the truth, kid.”

“I am! I didn’t touch them.”

After this little back and forth, her dad’s face seemed to dawn with something like… realization? He smiled very softly, grabbing her shoulders. “Okay. I believe you. Could you do me a favor, kiddo?”

"Yeah?”

“I need you to tell them that you did push them.”

Cassie stared up at him for a moment, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion. The dots didn’t connect in her little seven-year-old brain. “But I didn’t!”

“I know you didn’t. But they can’t know that.”

“Why not?”

“I’ll explain later. If you do it, I could talk about it with you over some ice cream…?”

Safe to say, it was only a few moments later when Cassie “admitted” to her supposed wrongdoing. She was let off with a warning, but her dad got a talk about something called “behavioral issues”, whatever that meant. She apologized to the other kid and their parents, and walked out without much consequence, if not the distaste of a few of her teachers.

The rest of that afternoon was spent driving to the family’s favorite ice cream place, and Michael gently explaining his heritage and abilities at a quiet park. Tales of magic and a deeper society that went beyond the bedtime stories she was used to. Cassandra was still slightly confused about the part where she had to lie and keep everything a secret, but her dad insisted that she had to do this. And she trusted her dad. Especially when he compelled her with chocolate chip cookie dough.

Smudge always left a mark every neighbourhood she visited. The stories of the girls “troublemaker” reputation never failed to seep into the next school she managed to get into. Stories of school fights, fragments of rumours left behind both lingered like a plague which the other children considered contagious. She made few friends and even then she’d have to leave them behind after she moves each few years. Her family was all she could confide in about her worries though even then they had their own issues to worry about. Despite this, Smudge’s mother always managed a hot meal just for her small family every day even if she has to spend her last dime to give them the comfort they deserve. Her father hopped between jobs faster than Smudge could count and could barely see him if he wasn’t at his desk job hunting for the next opportunity. Love for them was found in a unique way rather than the standard British family.

By the time she was Ten, she began wearing her delinquent persona as armour and to her surprise people actually began to stick around her at her new school. Quickly a group began to form with other students as they began to copy her antics sometimes even further intensifying it. Before she knew it, everything went way too far and she was started to targeted by the other students as a bully.

First Instance of Magic:
Reducio

Smudge still ponders about the distant day she discovered her magic, the constant question of if the oddity even real in the first place rings in her mind routinely. A reminder that she will never be like the rest, no matter how hard she tries.

Rain pitters softly to the panes of the fogged window, the noise blanketted by a thin sheet of patched curtains. Smudge peers below her to the worksheet her classmates would consider easy, the few letters in her vision seem to twist and squirm beneath her own eyes as she focuses intently to keep it in place. She had never been a smart girl, or whatever they had expected a normal student for her age to be. Even at the age of Eight, she had already been failing her classes. No one at the time understood it wasn't her own fault, only that she was not accustomed to the systems created specifically for a child that can keep her head down —- Everybody knew Smudge was not that girl, no matter how hard she could try.

Her grip strengthens onto the wooden pencil, the wood threatening to break under the pressure of her small fingers. The digital clock beside her produces a small ring as it shudders in slight motions to announce its time: 11.47, far best Smudge’s bed time. Her hands reach up to her face, moving past strands of straight hair still hot from the press her mother had given it that afternoon. “I- I can’t do this!” A small incite of anger balls inside of her as she pushes aside small messy arrangements of paper and stationary items on her desk.

A sharp noise jolts Smudge back to her senses as she returns her gaze to fix back to her window directly by her desk. Her eyes widen as she watches a trail of trailing fracture upscaling the window that was pristine only a few moments ago. Smudge falls hard to the floor, landing sharply on creaking floorboards whilst the patter of class falling onto her desk startles her further. Out of instinct her cadence calls for her belonger before even regaining her feet. “M — Mum? Come here, Quick!”
