Nevan’s gaze lingered on Damien as he spoke, quiet and still in contrast to the other boy’s animated enthusiasm. He didn’t interrupt, didn’t even shift his posture much. He just listened, taking in not only Damien’s words but the way his tone lifted when he spoke of his passion, the way he smirked with pride at his collection, the way his voice faltered briefly when mentioning his father. Nevan tucked that last part away, silent and subtle.
“Prodigy,” he echoed softly, almost tasting the word. “That’s not something most people can claim. It means you’ve already set yourself apart from others.” His voice wasn’t fawning or overly admiring, but calm and deliberate, the way one might weigh a fact. “If you can keep that, and build on it, then you’ll have more than just passion. You’ll have something lasting. It could make you successful.” Success had always been something Nevan was taught to go after, the most important thing in life. At first he had disagreed, and he still quietly did at times, but he accepted that success was important.
He adjusted the sleeve of the pretty formal robe he was currently wearing, almost hesitantly, then looked back to Damien. “I’ll be sure to find you, then, if I have questions. I prefer learning from those who know their subject best. Books are useful, but people…” He let the sentence trail for a moment before finishing softly, “People can tell you things in different ways than books can.”
At Damien’s remark about wisdom from experience, Nevan tilted his head slightly. “True. Experience shapes us. But even experience can be sharpened by guidance.” His lips quirked faintly, just shy of a smile.
The mention of Damien’s private library drew a longer pause from Nevan. He gave a low, thoughtful hum, his expression still and contemplative. “That is pretty impressive.” He also enjoyed reading a lot, but perhaps not for the fun of it, rather for the knowledge.
At the softer note Damien ended on, Nevan studied him for a moment longer, the corner of his lips turning up in the barest flicker of a smile. “Not many people our age think about leaving an impact on others. That’s… unusual. Admirable, I'd say.” He spoke carefully, as though testing the words on his tongue. “Perhaps Hogwarts is fortunate to have you.”
He glanced briefly toward the counter where Madam Malkin was neatly packing their purchases, then back to Damien. His fingers brushed against the silver clasp of the cloak draped over his arm, absently tracing the detail as he added, “And perhaps I could be fortunate to have you as a mentor too.” Not a real mentor, of course, just someone to answer his questions and help him if he struggled. Nevan usually preferred doing things on his own, but he'd give it a try. "Though I think I'll be more interested in Potions than Astronomy, I've always enjoyed watching my father work whenever he'd let me. He's a healer."

“Oh no no! I don’t mean it like I’m bragging or anything I’m just saying I’m pretty good at Astronomy!” He quickly said trying to clear up any misunderstanding that may be there, if there was one thing that Damien didn’t want Nevan to think was that he was bragging about his abilities or anything. Thought his eyes widen as that wasn’t the case at all as Nevan saw that as something that could lead Damien to success if he turned it into more than a passion which Damien had thought about multiple times as one his dreams was to maybe become the astronomy teacher of Hogwarts he donut the dream would happen but it was a nice thought. “Ha ha thank you…I know it’s kinda of a foolish dream but I would love to come back and become a astronomy professor or even a assistant for the astronomy professor but I doubt I could ever be as good as Professor McCorie!” He said giving his favorite professor the compliments that he deserved as Damien would always defend Professor McCorie whenever he could. He nodded eagerly as he would be glad to help Nevan whenever he could. “Of course! If you can’t find me just check the library or astronomy tower as I’m postive I would be found there” As those were the usually places Damien hung out at so he expected to be easy to find. “And you are true people can teach us and help us learn a lot!” He quickly said smiling. Damien listen to Nevan words as they were lovely words that spoke the truth which was that experience truly did help learn and shape people. “Yeah experiences really help us grow, and shape us into who we are one day.” Any one who knew Damien knew that he was such a optimistic person most of the time so any experience he experienced would most likely end up inspiring him later down the line or even in that moment. “Oh thank you! I’m kind of a nerd as one would say when it comes to reading!” He chuckle as he was sure once this new school year was over he’d leave Hogwarts with a lot of new books to add to the study. His expression suddenly changed to that of surprise as no one has ever told him that Hogwarts was fortunate to have him due to him wanting to make a good impact on someone’s life. It felt really nice to have someone say that. It seemed that he would be getting more and more shocked today as Nevan had suggested that Damien maybe could be a mentor to him. He loved the idea of being a mentor to people and helping others was always fascinating to him. “I’d be honored to be a mentor to you Nevan!” He said while giving off a radiant smile before continuing. “I’ll make sure to help you however I can!” |

Nevan listened quietly as Damien rushed to clarify, his tone earnest and almost anxious not to appear boastful. He blinked once, slowly, then gave a soft nod. “I didn’t take it as bragging,” he said simply, his voice even. “There’s a difference between arrogance and certainty. If you’re absolutely certain of your abilities, then that isn’t arrogance.”
When Damien admitted his dream of teaching one day, Nevan tilted his head slightly. “It doesn’t sound foolish to me. If everyone gave up on their dreams because they thought they were foolish, no one would accomplish much at all.” His words carried a quiet conviction, though his face remained composed, his hands adjusting the folded robes in his arms once more, almost nervously. He didn't often have such long conversations with people close to his age. He was scared he was boring Damien, especially since the other boy was so optimistic and enthusiastic compared to him. “Besides, Hogwarts would be fortunate to have someone who cares for the subject and enjoys teaching it.”
He gave Damien a look that lingered for a moment longer than usual when he told him where he could find him, then he nodded once again. “If I need to find you, then, I'll look at the library or the tower.”
As Damien agreed to be his mentor, Nevan’s lips twitched in a faint smile. “Then we’ll call it an arrangement,” he said softly. “Though don’t expect me to come to you for everything. I prefer to learn things myself first… and only ask when I’ve already tried.” There was a stubborn pride in the way he phrased it. He liked succeeding on things on his own, but he'd admit having a mentor sometimes wouldn't be too bad either.
He wondered if he should shift the conversation slightly, to move it along. Maybe sharing one of his own interests would help? He hoped so, he didn't want to bore Damien, he was one of the first children who's company Nevan actually found himself liking. “My father lets me watch him make potions sometimes, I think that's why I enjoy it,” he said, voice quieter, almost unsure, but he made sure he didn't seem unsure outwardly. That would be embarrassing, he had been taught to be confident, after all. “Not every healer does their own brewing, but he insists on it. He says it makes a difference, because every potion is more than just ingredients, it’s the intent behind it. I like that.”
He glanced to the side for a moment, thoughtful. Then he looked back at Damien, expression calm and composed yet again. “Perhaps potions will be where I’m most at home.”

Damien let out a breath of relief as he felt relived that Nevan didn’t feel like he was bragging out his skills or being arrogant. “Oh thank goodness that’s a relief” He said chuckling while looking at him. “Yeah I’m glad you think that I’ve had a few people consider that my confidence was bragging or being too arrogant” and that was the impression Damien never wanted to give to anyone ever. Damien face heated up again as it seemed like Nevan just kept on complimenting him as he hadn’t expected to be told that his dream wasn’t foolish and that Hogwarts would be fortunate to have him as a Astronomy professor. I…wow this guy is extremely nice I wasn’t expecting this at all. He didn’t know what to think of this as he was just happy that someone believed in his ability to teach enough to encourage him to reach for it.“Ha ha..thank you Nevan yknow you really know how to compliment a guy but I’ll definitely keep trying for that dream!” His smile just kept getting brighter and brighter as he felt like Nevan was helping him be more confident in his dream. “Yep! Just give me a shout and I’ll be there to help you!” He said chuckling as he would be down to help whoever needed it however he could. “Of course of course only an arrangement and that’s quite alright with me as I too also like trying to figure out my own work and assignments and only ask for help if necessary you know ? Damien Understood Nevan need to do all his assignment himself before asking for help as that was his way of doing things too no matter how stubborn it may be though on a few occasions he has given in and asked for help when he needed it the most. Damien eyes twinkled with interest as this whole time he has mainly only been talking about himself and his life so it was good to hear Nevan talking more about his own life. “Whoa your father is a healer ? That is quite interesting and yeah potions is quite interesting if your good at it ha ha!” He said smiling at him softly, he didn’t really know much about healers but it seemed that thanks to his dad Nevan knew quite alot about Healers. “Whoa that is so cool! I now know a healer to call if my mother or father needs one” He said chuckling while smiling at Nevan. “Where does he work St Mungos ? My father may have seen him on an Auror mission before!” He normally hated talking about his father but he was curious to learn more about Nevan father and his life. “Hm…I think you’ll excel in potions and become a great potion master or a healer one day!” He said as the more he thought about it the more he realized that Nevan would make a fine healer. |

Nevan blinked once at Damien’s laughter, his expression calm, almost thoughtful. “Confidence is only mistaken for arrogance by those who feel threatened by it,” he said matter-of-factly, the words smooth and deliberate, like something he’d heard his father say before. He didn’t mean it unkindly, just as a simple truth. His head tilted slightly, a faint glimmer of amusement in his eyes. “So perhaps you should take it as a compliment that they think so.”
When Damien pressed about his father, Nevan tugged at the sleeve of his robe before answering. “Yes. He works at St. Mungo’s.” His tone was steady, but there was a small flicker of pride beneath it. “He specializes in spell damage, but he’s well-versed in potions as well. I’ve seen him brew things that would be hard for many wizards.” His eyes lowered for a moment, considered. “I’d like to learn from him more, but he says some things require patience, and that I’ll understand when I’m older. That annoys me sometimes, but I understand it.”
The mention of Damien’s father, an Auror, earned only a slight nod. Nevan didn’t press or pry. He had gotten the impression that Damien didn't like talking about his father. Instead, he said smoothly, “Perhaps they’ve crossed paths. He doesn’t often speak about his work at home. But I know he's helped many people.” His tone carried a quiet finality, the kind that suggested he wouldn’t say more on that subject. He didn't mind his father, not at all, he just preferred other topics than his parents' success at times.
The compliment about becoming a potion master or healer made Nevan pause, studying Damien with a steady gaze. “A potion master or a healer,” he repeated softly, almost testing the words on his tongue. “That would be… respectable.” He let the thought hang a moment, then added in a quieter tone, “But I think I’d prefer a path that allows more freedom than hospitals. I like being able to do whatever I want, to an extent, study whatever I want.” His eyes flicked briefly toward the cloak in his arms before moving back to Damien. “Still, mastering potions would give me choices. And I intend to have many, I want to keep the options for my future open.”

Damien Let out a silent hum as he had never thought about it that way before, so that meant that if they thought he was arrogant they were just simplely threaten by him. He found that pretty interesting as it made him feel less bad about those comments that people took him being confident and proud as him being an arrogant pureblood. “Thank you Nevan that makes me feel a lot better.” He nodded his head as he listened to Nevan talk about the work his father did as he figured if he was a great healer he must have worked at St Mungos and he was glad that he was right. But he hadn’t expected him to mainly deal with spell damage which he found pretty I interesting as he hadn’t expected there to be a whole group of people dedicated to that but it sort of made sense. “Ah I understand hating the feeling of waiting to learn more as my mother makes me do that since some of the other treats and candies she makes require more work that only when I’m older I’ll be able to do” He said as he thought about the time he tried to reach one of the higher up machines but wasn’t tall enough to reach it yet. “Your father sounds like a good man Nevan and they may have my father he doesn’t….talk about many of his cases especially if there top secret ones” He said as he didn’t want to sully the mood thinking about his father so he instead thought about the mission he went on with Howard White to track down a fire crab it was a pretty fun assignment if he said so himself and couldn’t wait to help out again in the future. Damien admired how even thought a potion master or a healer was a very good and respectable position, he liked how Nevan wanted to forge his own path and figure out a path that allowed more freedom to do things he wanted. “Well if you even do chose a career that deals with potions it wouldn’t surprise me.” |

Nevan nodded his head slightly at Damien’s thanks, a subtle acknowledgement, before he let the matter rest. He didn’t press further, since he rarely did once he felt his point had been made.
At the mention of Damien’s mother’s sweets, though, his brows lifted ever so slightly. “Your mother makes sweets?” His voice carried quiet curiosity, though not the eager, bouncing kind of most children. His tone was careful, interested without being overeager. “That explains why you mentioned a business that could rival Honeydukes earlier. I’ve only been there once, but I remember the shelves being… overwhelming.” His gaze flicked down at the polished floor, lips pressing together a moment. “I don’t eat much sweets myself, but my mother says a proper host should always have some on hand for guests. Perhaps I’ll try more when I’m older.”
Shifting a little bit, Nevan looked back at Damien. “Still, it must be interesting to watch her work. Do you help her often? I imagine her sweets must be amazing.” The words were genuine, though in his usual composed way, more observation than flattery.
After a short pause, he added, “I wonder what Hogwarts food will be like. I’ve heard the feasts are grand, but I suppose that means more distractions too. It will be strange not following the routines I’ve kept at home.”
His eyes drifted briefly toward one of the robed mannequins, as if imagining himself at the Sorting Ceremony. He was curious which house he'd be in. “Are the professors strict? I don’t mind rules, as long as they don't become chains and stop me from learning further. If they do I might be inclined to break those rules. I'm not sure which subjects will provide me the most freedom, but they'll probably be my favourites.”
He looked back at Damien then, the faintest spark of curiosity breaking through his reserved tone. “What about you? Besides Astronomy, are there other subjects you enjoy or dislike? I’d like to know what to expect. My tutors never covered much about how the classes are actually taught at Hogwarts.”

Damien gave a small but polite nod as his mother did own a sweets shop that he loved a lot, he enjoyed helping out during the summer whenever she needed the help. Plus he enjoyed seeing all the customers especially these four old ladies who would come everyday to get some sweets for there grandkids and themselves he enjoyed hearing there stories as he found them so interesting. “Oh! Yeah she does Dragonclaws Delights she makes some good sweets it’s always the sweets that I have on me or make is using her recipes” He said smiling as now talking about her sweet shop made Damien crave them sweets even more, especially the lemon pound cake his mothers prized recipe. Hm…maybe I’ll ask her if I could take some sweets from her shop as well as come slices of cakes to Hogwarts this year. The more he thought about it the more he realized that it would be nice to have some sweets at Hogwarts to snack on. “Yep a lot of people like her shop because it has affordable prices and she the main one who makes all her sweets so if they wanted sweets like hers they wouldn’t be able to find it anywhere else!” He said speaking with a fondness and pride in his voice as he was proud of his mother since he mainly only ate sweets from her shop minus every flavor beans and chocolate frogs. “Matter of fact if we bump into each other again I’ll bring you some sweets to sample!” Damien loved advertising and helping his mother gain more customers as she was always happy to greet them in her shop as he always loved seeing his mother have a smile on her face. “Oh the grand feast is delicious it’s a-lot different from food I’m used to eating at home but you get used to it plus you don’t have to just sit with your house you can join other friends from different houses” Damien thought that having Nevan sit with him or at a table with him during the grand feast would be pretty cool but he doubts it would happens.“Yeah it takes awhile to get out of routine but I think you’ll enjoy the food!” Damien eyebrows lifted up at the question Nevan asked him as it was a interesting one, were the professor Strict Damien didn’t really think the professor were strict more stern when they needed to be. “I wouldn’t really say strict yknow…? More stern when they need to be like if someone is disrupting class” He answered as he tried to make sure his words came out right and sounded how he meant them. “As for a subject that provides more freedom I feel like all of them have rules you must follow but for me Herbology, Astronomy, History of Magic and potions are the more freeing ones” Why he now some what understood transfiguration it was still quite a struggle. “Hm..well other than Astronomy I love Herbology especially Professor Sarai! She’s so awesome! Then potions I like Professor Samuel he seems mysterious or strict but I like him and then hm..” He had to think a little bit more on this as he didn’t know what all subjects he really enjoyed. “Oh! I also like History or Magic and defense agansit the dark arts! Really I like every class but I used to dislike transfiguration it isn’t my favorite but it isn’t too bad!” He said smiling as he gotten stronger in transfiguration. |

Nevan listened in silence, watching Damien with that steady, unreadable expression of his. He didn’t interrupt, he just let him speak, the corners of his lips twitching slightly when Damien’s pride in his mother’s shop became obvious. “Dragonclaw’s Delights,” he repeated softly, almost testing the name on his tongue. “I’ll remember that.”
When Damien offered to bring him some, Nevan tilted his head, the faintest trace of a smile flickering there and gone again, along with a little bit of suprise. “That’s very kind of you. I’d like to try something, though I can’t promise I’ll be much of a judge. I’ve never had much of a sweet tooth.” He shrugged, running a finger along the silver lining the robe he was currently wearing had. “Still, ifyou say it's good, then it should be worth trying.”
The mention of the feast drew a thoughtful hum from him. “Sitting with different houses?” He tilted his head a little. “That isn’t something I read about.” He didn’t say whether he liked the idea or not, but his eyes were thoughtful, as if he was filing the detail away. And there was also some curiosity in them. “As long as the food isn’t too overwhelming, I suppose I’ll manage.”
At Damien’s thoughts on the professors, Nevan gave a small nod. “Stern is tolerable. It’s the unnecessary rules I dislike. Things that waste time rather than encourage discipline. But if the professors are fair, then that’s enough for me.”
He lingered a moment on the list of subjects Damien rattled off, humming in contemplation. “Herbology, hm? That one I’m not sure about. Plants seem… unpredictable. But perhaps that makes it useful. Defense Against the Dark Arts, though, that’s something I want to see for myself. Theory is one thing, but proper application is something else entirely. And if the professor is as good as people say, then it will be a valuable class.”
His gaze flicked back to Damien then, sharp and intent as if measuring him. “Transfiguration interests me from what I've read. Being able to change things, but even more so to make things from out of thin air, that's appealing. Even if I have read that Conjuration is studied in the later years so I probably won't be seening much of it for a while.”

Damien smiled at Nevan as he seemed to have such a bright mind and was shockingly interested in Transfiguration which Damien thought was pretty cool as that meant he had a good imagination and was very capable of doing well in Transfiguration class. Damien was just about to ask him what drew him into Transfiguration so much when finally Madam Malkins finally came back with the Dragonclaw family robes, Damien let out a breath of relief as he was running out of things to talk about. “Sorry about the wait my dears I was trying to make sure I had all of the orders right while also making sure Mr Easton’s order would be ready for him” She said smiling as she quickly handed Damien a green bag that held the robes in it. “Oh it’s quite alright Madam Malkins I’m just glad everything worked out” He said smiling at her as it all worked out since he got to meet Nevan and made a possible new friend. He set the gallons his mother gave him for the order down onto the counter before turning to Nevan smiling at him. “It was nice meeting you Nevan I can’t wait to see you at Hogwarts this year” He said smiling before taking the bag with the robes inside before waving goodbye to Nevan before walking out of the shop. As he walked away to meet up with his mother he had a huge smile on his face as he had just made a new friend and got some new robes so today felt like it would be a good day for Damien. |
