The little bell above the door made a ding as Nevan stepped into Madam Malkin's. The warmth of the store washed over him, the scent of fabric and polish settling in the air. Tall racks of robes stretched along the walls, strips of fabric stacked neatly on dozens of shelves, and mannequins stood in the corners dressed in Hogwarts uniforms, dress robes and cloaks trimmed with velvet.
Nevan smoothed his slightly tousled bangs back and straightened his shoulders. His parents had taught him since he was even younger than he was now that presentation was important, so even at eleven he knew how to carry himself properly. First impressions mattered, after all. That was something everyone knew.
A kindly witch in pale lilac robes hurried over to him, a smile on her face as she looked him over. "First year?" she asked, already reaching for a measuring tape.
"Yes,'' Nevan answered softly, his voice polite and slightly reserved. He stood perfectly still as the tape measure sprang to life, darting around him and marking down numbers. His dark eyes studied the way the measuring tape circled his arm before snapping back into the witch's hands.
Within a minute, he had a set of Hogwarts robes fitted over his shoulders. The fabric felt a little stiff at first, but it was smooth beneath his fingers. He inspected himself in the mirror, adjusting the sleeves of his robes a bit. He didn't say much, but he nodded in approval, showing he was satisfied.
He took the robes off and folded them, holding them in his arms for now. When the witch asked if he needed anything else, he nodded. "Yes, a winter cloak, please. Something warm and proper." His tone was measured, not demanding, but with the quiet certainty of someone who was used to getting things in order. He wanted a nicely made winter cloak, not something shabby.
She returned with a few options in her arms, and Nevan looked them over, holding the fabric between his fingers. In the end he settled on a black cloak with silver fastenings, but with the added detail of a soft fur trim. He took it into his arms and nodded at the witch that this was his choice. He also got a pair of protective gloves and a pointed hat.
Once his final selections were set aside for packing, Nevan drifted away from the fitting area. He wandered between the racks, fingertips trailing lightly along a row of neatly folded cloaks. He found himself studying the different cuts and stitches with a quiet curiosity. But he was mostly just looking to see if anything would catch his eye. Perhaps a suit, as Nevan did want to have some formal wear, even if it wasn't necessary at Hogwarts. His parents would want him to have something to look more proper on special occasions.

The bell of Madam Malkin rung throughout the shop as the door opened wide to reveal Damien Dragonclaw stepping through it as he was dressed in this beautiful red and gold suit with the Dragonclaw crest on it. This wouldn’t have been Damien suit of choice but his father insisted since he was accompanying his mother to diagon alley that he should at-least dress in his words properly whatever that meant. As Damien walked through the store Madam Malkins immediately noticed him and quickly went to greet him. “Ah! Mister Dragonclaw so nice to see you again and my goodness have you gotten taller!” She said teasing Damien as Damien had in fact gotten taller as in his first year he was at the height of 5,1 but now he was standing at the height of 5,3, Damien father always said Damien would be quite tall as he himself was tall and so was his mother so It just make sense that his genetics most likely would make him taller. “Your families robes are right in the back I’ll go get them!” She said as she walked towards the back to get his family robes that his mother had ordered a few days ago. Damien never understood why so many people respected and bent over backwards for the Dragonclaws, he understood that they were a really known Pureblood family with his mother owning her own sweets business that could rival honey dukes if she wanted and then his father being a very high up Auror working on special cases at the ministry but he never understood why people cared to get on there good side so much. As Damien waited he looked around her shop as he thought about getting himself a new wardrobe as he wanted clothes and outfits that reflected his house and not the house his father wishes he would have gotten in. Speaking of his father they both avoided talking to each other not even speaking at the dinner table as Damien didn’t want to see him nor speak to him after the letter he sent him back in March of his first year and Damien father felt the same way. It’s why he was so happy to go on these outings with his mother as he enjoyed hanging out with her and it gets her away from his father for awhile. |

Nevan's attention flicked towards the door as the bell announced someone entering. It was another boy, maybe a year older than Nevan. The red and gold suit caught his eye first. It was bold, striking, the kind that seemed to demand attention whether one wanted it or not. Nevan adjusted his hold on the folded robes in his arms, watching quietly from between the racks as Madam Malkin greeted the boy with familiarity.
Dragonclaw. The name wasn't unfamiliar. His tutors had mentioned it in passing more than once, a respected pure-blood family. He filed the detail away as easily as breathing. Names mattered, just as appearances did.
He smoothed his bangs back again and stepped away from the row of cloaks, approaching with the same careful posture his parents had drilled into him. He didn’t speak at once, though. Instead, his dark eyes studied Damien for a moment, taking in his height, the crest stitched into the suit, the way he carried himself. He seemed… less proud than his clothes suggested. That was interesting.
Finally, Nevan offered a polite nod, his voice soft but clear.
“Second year, aren’t you?”
He wasn’t asking out of ignorance, more so to see how the boy would respond. After a brief pause, he added, “Nevan Easton. First year.” His tone was calm, measured, with none of the bluster some children might try to put on to seem older than they were. He found the idea of doing that a bit stupid.
Nevan tilted his head slightly, glancing at Damien’s suit once more before meeting his eyes. “Your robes are already waiting for you? You must come here often.” The words weren’t quite flattery, but there was a quiet curiosity in them, the kind that made it clear Nevan was weighing him, trying to learn something from even the smallest reply. He was curious about this boy, even if he wasn't sure why.

As Damien stood there waiting for the robes he kept looking around the shop as he tried to figure out what his next order of robes should be. He figured that having more outfits in ravenclaw blue would be a good idea with either gold or silver accents to go along with it. Suddenly a boy with pale skin and dark brown hair walked over towards him. He just looked over at the boy slightly confused as if he needed something before he listen to him speak. The boy asked him if he was a second year or wasn’t really a question and more of a statement which Damien nodded to. “Yes I am a second year.” He quickly said turning his attention to the boy. He gave a small smile as the boy mentioned his name was Nevan Easton, he held his hand out offering a handshake to the boy. “Pleasure to meet you I’m Damien Dragonclaw” As he said that he gave him a more charming brighter smile one he gave whenever he mentioned his last name to people to keep up expectations. He noticed the boy was glancing at the suit he was wearing but didn’t say anything as he was still in public and if word got out that he said something remotely disrespectful about his father house he wouldn’t be too happy about it. His eyes widen as the boy took attention on the fact that Damien robes were already done. “Ah yes! My mother and me came here awhile back and she placed the order ahead of time so I came to pick them up.” |

Nevan's eyes flicked briefly to Damien’s outstretched hand before he took it, his grip light but deliberate. He shook it once, then released it, straightening his posture again as though he’d practiced that gesture countless times.
“Dragonclaw,” he repeated softly, the name measured on his tongue. His expression didn’t shift much, but there was the faintest flicker of curiosity in his dark eyes. “I’ve heard of your family before.” It wasn’t said with awe, but as if he were simply stating a fact, cataloguing something he already knew. He knew names were important, but he wasn't the type to suck up to people.
At Damien's explanation about his robes, Nevan gave a small nod, though his gaze lingered a moment longer on the boy's polished suit. “Efficient. My parents did the same, though they insisted I come to be fitted myself.” He smoothed his bangs back absently once again, his tone calm and polite, almost formal for someone his age. “They think it's important to be present for things like this."
He let the silence stretch a little, testing how comfortable Damien was with it, before adding, “Ravenclaw suits you. I’ve heard the house values wit and wisdom. You must be clever if you were placed there.” Since he had heard about the Dragonclaw family, he had also heard which house their son had gotten into.
The words could have been pure flattery, but Nevan’s tone wasn’t flowery. It was calm, appraising, as though he was gathering information piece by piece. And also showing Damien that he knew some stuff about him. His gaze softened slightly as he added, “I’ll be sorted this year. I don’t know where yet, but… I think I’ll do well wherever I am.” There was a subtle confidence in that statement, like he already trusted his ability to adapt to whichever he house he went to.
He shifted the folded robes in his arms. “Do you enjoy it? Hogwarts, I mean. Being a second year now, you must know quite a bit about it.” There was curiosity there, genuine, but also strategic, the kind of question that let him learn while keeping the conversation flowing. He wasn't only talking to Damien for information, he was also truly interested in the boy and wasn't minding the conversation so far.

As Damien shook the soon to be first year hand his eyes was observing him, call it his painter’s interpretation but he observed details about everything as to be a good painter you need to be able to see everything about the subject or object your painting. He noticed how he had freckles and dark colored eyes but also how he kept straightening his posture as if his parents or someone was in the room steady reminding him to keep his posture straight. He listen to the boy repeat his last name almost as if it was some recognition before stating that he heard of Damien’s family before. Which didn’t surprise Damien at all as a lot of Pureblood's had heard of his families and those that hadn’t probably wasn’t too important to the Dragonclaw for them to remember them as his grandmother and his father had two goals in mind for there families better there connections in high society and make there family look better than they already did. He gave Nevan a small nod as it was pretty efficient to order your robes and other stuff ahead of time to save some time. “Yeah that’s understandable we visited her in advance to be fitted and then I got a bit more taller so luckily she has all of our measurements saved and updated every year” He said while he watched as the boy smoothed his out his bangs. It stayed quiet for a few moments which Damien figured was the boy thinking of more to say. His eyes widen as the boy said that Ravenclaw suited him as he must be pretty clever since ravenclaw values wit and wisdom. He gave him a small smile before nodding his head. “Yeah I think I’m pretty smart at-least I’d like to think so as I manage to become a intern for the Astronomy Professor” He said while watching the kid closely, it wasn’t like he was flattering Damien more so informing him of all the information he knew about him. Damien admired the confidence that Nevan had that no matter what house he’ll be sorted into hell do well, it gave Damien the vibe of a Gryffindor or a Slytherin but it could always be Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw too.“I think you’ll do well in whatever house you be in and if your Ravenclaw I’ll gladly welcome you as a new bunk mate” He said smiling at him before he listened to the next question Nevan asked him. Damien like to think that he knew alot about Hogwarts mainly by the lake the library or the astronomy tower as that’s where he spent most of his time. “Of course I love Hogwarts! And I would say I know a lot of good spots mainly in the library the lake and the astronomy tower But I know some other places too” He said while rubbing his neck softly. |

The way Damien studied him was familiar. It reminded him of the way his tutors had taught him to observe, to take in details, to notice patterns, to learn about something without having to ask. He found himself wondering what Damien saw when he looked at him, but he kept that question tucked away for later.
When Damien spoke of his Astronomy internship, Nevan’s eyebrow lifted subtly. “An intern already? For a second year?” His tone wasn’t incredulous, more… impressed, or perhaps testing the truth of it. “That’s unusual. You must be very skilled, or the professor must think highly of you. Probably both.” His eyes lingered on Damien, sharp and searching, before he inclined his head slightly in acknowledgment. He thought to himself that this was something worth remembering.
He glanced toward the racks again, though his focus remained mostly on Damien. “I’ve read about Astronomy, but I’ve never had the chance to practice it properly. It seems vast. Like there’s always something new to find if you’re clever enough to look for it.” He spoke with a careful curiosity, as though he was not only complimenting Damien but also probing him for more.
At Damien’s reassurance about houses, Nevan gave a small, thoughtful nod. “I think so too. Each house has its own strengths. What matters is how one uses those strengths, not the label attached to them.” His voice was calm, even, but with a quiet edge of conviction, like someone who already knew he’d make his place, wherever he landed. He'd be able to get more knowledge no matter what house he got into.
Damien’s enthusiasm about Hogwarts made Nevan pause, studying him again. There was something genuine in it, something warm, and for a moment, Nevan let down the formality just slightly. “The library, the lake and the Astronomy Tower.” he repeated softly, as though cataloguing the information. His lips twitched into the faintest of smiles. “Good places to start. I’ll have to see them for myself when I arrive.”
Then, almost as an afterthought, he added, “Perhaps you could show me. A second year’s perspective might be… useful.” His tone was polite, but beneath it lay something else, an unspoken suggestion that Nevan wasn’t simply seeking a guide, but testing whether Damien would be worth his trust.

As he studied Nevan closer Damien eyes widen as he heard him mention how being a intern in his second year was pretty impressive. He blushed at the slight praise before smiling. “Yeah I think Professor McCorie likes me at-least I hope he does as I have a few plans to get more students interested in astronomy!” As he spoke anyone would be able to tell that Damien had an excitement and passion for Astronomy. Even from a young age Damien enjoyed the stars he painted the constellations so many time that their hanging up in his art studio back in the Dragonclaw manor. Just thinking about it missed his vast collection of paints and other stuff he could use to work on paintings, maybe he would owl his mother to send some of his more expensive supplies in a box to Hogwarts later in the year. He finally exited out of his thoughts as he listened to Nevan speak about how he read about astronomy but never had the proper chance to learn about it. “Really ? Well then I would gladly help you properly learn about it any questions you have about astronomy I’m your guy!” He said smiling as the though of teaching others about astronomy always fascinates him. He even had a dream that some may call foolish but he would love to one day become the astronomy professor. He nodded along with Nevan statement about the houses as each house did have there own strengths and it was whatever way they used it rather to help themselves or there house. “Very wise words Nevan.” He said. His tone charming and very posh as he looked at him. His excitement picked up even more as he hoped Nevan would enjoy those places just like he did. “Yes the libary is quite lovely it has so many fascinating books it rivals my own personal collection so it’s quite lovely!” He couldn’t help but show his love for books whenever he mentioned the library as to him there was no other place that he enjoyed more than the library. He flashed a smile at him as He would be more than delighted to tour around and guide Nevan. “Oh it course! I’d be more than delighted to!” |

Nevan shifted the robes in his arms, his fingers brushing over the smooth fabric absently as he listened. Damien’s blush at the praise hadn’t gone unnoticed, and neither had the way his tone brightened when he spoke of astronomy. Nevan tilted his head slightly, dark eyes narrowing just a fraction, as though filing away the observation. It seemed Damien really was enthusiastic about the subject.
“You must have a gift for it,” he said softly, his voice calm but carrying a quiet weight. “Most people wouldn’t bother trying to make others interested in something they already love. But I'd... appreciate it, if you answer my questions about it once I start, even if I'm confident in my ability to study the subject.” His lips curved into the faintest of smiles.
At Damien’s praise of his “wise words,” Nevan’s brows lifted slightly. “Wisdom is usually borrowed from others,” he said quietly, almost like he was repeating a lesson taught by his parents. “I’ve just had good teachers.” Still, there was a pride under the humility, and he perked up significantly at the praise.
The way Damien lit up when he spoke of the library caught Nevan’s attention. His lips quirked faintly at the edges, almost a smirk but softer, a glint of amusement. “A personal collection that can rival Hogwarts’ library?” he echoed, tone curious. “That must be impressive. You must read a great deal.” His gaze softened for a beat. “I do as well. My parents say it’s the one habit they’ll never scold me for.”
Damien’s promise of a tour earned him a proper nod, but there was some excitement in Nevan's eyes. He was eager. “Then I’ll look forward to it.” Nevan’s voice was still measured, but there was a subtle shift in tone, less testing, more genuine. He let his eyes flick briefly toward the shop windows, where sunlight glinted off the glass, then back to Damien. “It’s always nice to have someone show you around, you can get used to the change of scenery more easily. But I think I'll manage to adjust to being at Hogwarts rather than at home, I'm looking forward to not being cooped up.”

As Damien listened to Nevan talk a interesting thought came to his mind. He never understood why most people wouldn’t want to teach others about the things they were passionate in especially if that person wanted to learn about it. Damien had no problem teaching others about astronomy or any other topic he enjoyed in fact he found great pleasure in doing so as it excited him and made him feel even more confident in his abilities and knowledge. “Some would probably say I’m a prodigy in Astronomy but to be honest I just truly love the subject it just fascinates me a whole lot!” He said smiling before answers the other part of the question, “I’d be delighted to answer any questions you have any time you just gotta find me!” He said chuckling softly to himself as it was quite easy to find him unless he was deliberately hiding from people then it may be. A bit tricker. Damien nodded his head softly following along with Nevan saying about wisdom is just burrowed from others and how he had good teachers. “While that is true our experiences can give us wisdom as well!” He smirked as he could notice a little bit of pride in Nevan probably due to his praise. Suddenly Damien pride swelled up as Nevan looked shocked that his personal study could almost rival Hogwarts library as a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. “Yes I’m very proud of it since alot of it is my work ha ha as it’s as huge as the Hogwarts library just don’t have as many books as Hogwarts does yet” He chuckled as he could spend hours upon hours even the whole day if he wanted too reading books. Yeah it is quite impressive! Ha ha my mother doesn't scold me for reading at all she encourage it while my father only scolds me when it interferes with other things” He quickly said not elaborating more as he did not want to talk or think about him right now. “As do I since I enjoy helping others anyway and if I make a impact in there life then I’m happy!” He smiled softly. |
