She didn't believe him, there was no way for anyone to be over Emily- she was the kind of girl that stuck in your mind long after you stop seeing her. Scout figured that even when she was old and wrinkly, she'd still be thinking about Emi. Maybe even after she died, her 'heaven' would be her and Emily together, just like they always were. She wouldn't be too upset if Casey and Zyair were there, she might even be okay if she saw a Colin on occasion.

But Casey has a point, it'd be pretty hard for someone like Emily to know if someone liked her as a friend or romantically. Scout didn't think she struggled too much with that, but to be fair, she had minimal experience with either before her first year at Hogwarts. But what she lacked in real experience, she made up for in watching copious amounts of muggle movies and shows. At the end of every school day, she thrilled in coming home, throwing her bag on the floor, and putting a movie on to watch while her dad made dinner. She figured from that alone, she'd be able to pick up on friendly and romantic subtexts. Probably.

"I don't think I balance anything at all, honestly." She shrugs, "I dunno, spending time with Emi makes me wish I could practice emotional regulation a little better. She keeps all her stuff together all the time, she's always got a pretty smile on her face, and everyone loves her- you know, I'm starting to see why you and Colin get the feels for her."

When Casey calls her a princess- Scout scoffs. In a hundred years, no, in a millennium, she'd never be a princess. When she was five or six, she might've had dreams of living in a castle, but that life hadn't sat right with her since she was in primary school. No matter how many times stories she read about becoming a princess or anything similar, she wasn't convinced.

"I think we're just assigning each other roles that don't exactly fit, huh?" She tilts her head back and forth in thought. "I think we'd both make great knights, specifically knights for Emily. She does need the protection, I think." Knight Scout would make a killer name, and Casey having the same honorific wasn't an idea that'd make her retch.

She scrunches up her nose when he cleans off the dirt, before snickering- "What has gotten into you? You're so nice! If I had known you were so 'gentle' and 'kind', I would've felt so much worse after jinxing you." She omitted eating herself up after she did so, because Scout would rather explode and die in a fire than admit something like that to Casey. Really, she had kept that from everyone except for Pebble and Emily, and she only told the latter because... well, they were best friends, and it was just too hard to keep things from Emily.

Casey had suspected it for a while after observing Scout's demeanour around Emily for some time, but at this point he was more than sure of it. Scout held a great deal of respect and love for the ribbon wearing No-Maj girl, but Casey could also see that much of her decisions seemed to revolve around her as well. That wasn't to say Emily was controlling in a friendship. He knew that was as possible as draining blood from a stone. Emily just had that affect on people. She was so incorrigibly sweet that eventually it would spread like glitter on to other people. A part of her charm that she hadn't quite realised yet, Casey wondered.

At the same time, Casey chuckled. "I'll admit she knows how to keep composed when it comes to her losin' her temper, but I can promise you she's far from a stone hearted warrior. She tries to put up a front but even she feels vulnerable when she needs to. I think that's why I respect her so much... She reminded me that it's okay to let your guard down and just... Let it out. I've seen in her eyes a few times where she wants to break down but she doesn't. I'm heavily assumin' stuff here but I think she acts so composed is because she feels the need to fix everythin' herself, even when it ain't her fault. But despite that, she lets the tears run".

His lip curved into a small smile as he looked down at his lap. "She told me once that strength is measured in how long you fight in a battle, not in the number of battles you fight," he continued thoughtfully. "And sometimes people just crash when they don't have somethin' to lean on. Like I did once..."

For all the wisdom Emily had - which Casey did admit was probably one of her underrated strengths - he couldn't help but agree with Scout. Again. "I suppose it wouldn't hurt for her to learn how to toughen up a little, even if it was to take a hit or two. She's just so dainty lookin' and tranquil, even though we know she can manage herself fine. I guess that's where we'd come in anyway eh? Hell, I'd take a dive for her every time".

His train of thought halted and after a beat, he shook his head, his bangs hitting his cheeks as he pouted back in Scout's direction. "But that don't mean I'm hot and dusty about her! Sure, I like her as a friend but that's where that stops. Sheesh... You into teen drama or somethin'? Sure as hell sounds like it..."

He wiped his hands across his thighs as he got rid of the last of the dirt from Scout's face. For the cheeky statements she had been making about him and a fabricated love story between him and Emily, he felt a sense of karma in the air when Scout got flustered by the gesture.

"I am capable of some good deeds, you know," he rebuked before his voice became softer. "And quit feelin' sorry about the jinxin' business yeah? Just pretend you didn't have a choice and you were teachin' me a lesson, alright? I deserved it. And yes, quote me on that".

"if" and "lie" are in front of my life, wherever i go, i ask "what if...?"
i wish i could live in reality with no regrets, i feel like an idiot for saying that.
Scout was, indeed, far more into teen drama than she would be willing to admit. Although living through something that could be equated to a plot in a drama... well, it wouldn't kill her thrill for it, but it would definitely dampen it.

"Yeah, I guess so." She didn't want think about Emily being sad. On one hand, there was a certain air about Scout's angsty feelings towards herself- they were deserved and had existed since Scout had been able to think coherently, she didn't think there had ever been a time where she thought positively towards herself. Scout was not someone who could handle complex emotions, often breaking down or breaking others down, and she had been that way for as long as she can think. On the other side of the spectrum, Emily feeling any sort of negative feelings... that didn't feel deserving. Emily was bright and cheery, the sun peering through the clouds on a rainy day, she was the loving person that Scout wanted to be like. Emily didn't deserve to feel any similar to Scout, she wasn't a monster or anything close.

Emily was an angel, in that way.

Honestly, with the way Casey was acting tonight, he kind of was too. There wasn't really an association with "Casey" and "kind" in her head, but with how sweet he was, the line might've been drawn. After the night she's had with Zyair and then Sabrina... she kind of needed the serenity he surprisingly brought.

"You? Doing good deeds? That's surprising."

For just a moment, in the break of conversation, she wants to spill her guts out to him. Very rarely do these heartfelt moments actually occur, and it's much rarer for them to happen with anyone besides Emily. The idea of telling Casey that she's a vampire, that she hates herself, that sometimes she can taste phantom blood in her mouth, that she sat on the floor of the halls and angrily cried next to an upperclassman. It all becomes more appealing the longer she stares at the moon, the longer the idea of keeping up the lie of being completely human screams in her brain. It's a surprisingly difficult barrier for her to manage, and while it was worse with Zyair, it was still bad with Casey.

Zyair... she still didn't know if she could face him after tonight- that was if he even wanted to talk to her. This situation was far more complicated than Scout wanted to acknowledge, that was for sure.

"It was kind of funny seeing you go flying..." Scout snickers under her breath. "Kind of wish I could do it again- but I wouldn't! Maybe... actually, hold on, I can't guarantee that." Her smile is just a little fake, even the idea of joking about what she did makes her head spin. She likes Casey enough now that joking about hurting him makes her heart hurt in a way that it wouldn't just a few months prior. It'd be like joking about cursing Emily- no, that was a lot worse.

"It's getting kind of late, huh? I should probably head back to the castle before it gets too dark." That wasn't really a problem for her, but Casey didn't need to know that. "You should probably head back too. Um, and-" Gathering up what little courage she has, Scout cups Casey's cheek and presses a hasty kiss to it. He was- even if it killed her to admit it- being very kind and sweet, and good deeds deserved to be recognized.

"If it were any other night, I'd think you were weird for being so nice. But 'cause today's sucked, I'm being appreciative. Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite."

Friends...? With @Scout Fu-Hai
Despite the time he was spending with her, Casey was still picturing Scout to be somewhat of an enigma. Just when he thought he figured a part of her out, she would go and contradict herself. Either she was doing it on purpose to get a rise out of him - which under normal circumstances would've worked - or that Scout was just someone that hadn't really figured themselves out the whole way yet. In a different timeline, Casey would've grown impatient and would most likely have given up on her, but with the way things have turned out over the last several months in particular and with Scout surprisingly being open and vulnerable with him, Casey offered a generous level of patience to her, extending it when he gave her time to think when she wanted to.

"You? Doing good deeds? That's surprising."

Casey's eyebrows raised in classic "Wha--?" fashion. "You wanna know surprisin'? You bein' so tame and relaxed. How did we go from you jinxin' me to wantin' to sit down and actually talk with me?"

See? Scout Fu-Hai was just a jumble of juxtaposition. She was like a Rubik's cube that was on the verge of completing itself on one final turn of the blocks, only for Scout to come along and undo the three turns before it. Using Emily as the scapegoat answer for her behaviour was becoming a joke that was slowly losing its punchline effect after every time it's told... Although in fairness, her involvement in both of their lives was partially responsible for it all. But still, Casey knew that both he and Scout could do better than trying to imitate Emily's near omnipotent ability for chasing rainclouds away.

"Kind of wish I could do it again- but I wouldn't! Maybe... actually, hold on, I can't guarantee that."

Ah-ha! There it was. Casey simpered. He knew that bout of patience would pay off in the end. "That's more like it. That's the firecracker I know".

He suddenly felt the air turn colder and the sky darkened when the clouds obscured the light of the moon. Huh. Time was passing rather quickly if the clouds were rolling as swift as they were. Yet it hardly felt like he and Scout had spent that long talking.

He watched as Scout got up and quickly followed her lead. She looked like she was ready to go back inside.

"Do you want me to... Um..." -- Walk her back, was what he wanted to say. Yes, want. But the words got stuck in his throat and he was left frozen as she turned from him.

He just about caught a mumbling string of words as she avoided eye contact with him. His smile was loose but remained genuine. "Hey... We're cool".

Scout wished him good night before walking off. Casey's fingertip touched the tail end of a strand of her hair that blew back from the breeze before there was a sizeable distance between them. Once Scout vanished out of his sight, he turned and walked the other way, stuffing his hands in his pockets, his finger still savouring the feel of her silken hair.

"G'night, Princess".
