The second round of casting, and already the stakes were rising.

The Gryffindor strategy was simple. Logan’s mobility had been lowered by in the first round, and the lions scrambled to seize the initiative. Two spells, both on target. A knockback jinx cast by Ivy was the first blow; and while Elsa set the badger ablaze with a high-level Incendio.

Undeterred, Logan sought to replicate the Gryffindor success of the previous round: first tip them off balance, and then hit them where it hurts. The Wind Jinx she cast at Ivy set the Gryffindor off-balance, buffeting her with strong winds.

The most surprising tactical choice came from Anderson. Where the other three took the most direct approach to dueling - attempting to bulldoze through their opponents with sheer force of magic, Anderson elected to go for something more subtle. A weather-modifying charm, slow to cast, slow to pay dividends was their choice of attack. It was not something Hui-Ming was have picked.

The Slytherin moderator, though, stood corrected; as the rainclouds went after the Gryffindors with a vengeance. The first bolt of lightning struck Miss Bellamy. Perhaps she had not anticipated that she’d be struck by lightning – it was famously supposed to be unlikely. Perhaps she was simply unlucky, but a savage bolt had struck her nonetheless.

Hui-Ming’s grip tightened on his wand, ready to step in should the escalating levels of violence leave the any upper-years not be able to continue. A duellist from each side had been battered brutally, but it appeared that such an intervention would not be needed just yet.

Nicky didn't like the way they were being hit, and although their spells found their target... Was it really enough? No, she couldn't think that way, that was a sure way to lose the duel. They were doing good and they were going to dodge better and they were going to win.

Logan was actually proud of herself. She had so far been able to hit all of her spells and although she had taken damage, it was not enough to take her out of the game yet. The fire that was currently spreading across her outfit was a bit concerning, but she would be able to withstand it probably.

For once, Dori felt invigorated by a duel. It was still anyone's game, sure, but it had never gone this well since they first duelled and won. Their storm cloud quickly got to work, striking Ivy. They quietly and discreetly pumped their fist in a display of a small victory. Logan was able to hit Ivy with a Wind Jinx, leaving her woozy for the next round. "Nice job- Oh!" Their congratulations were cut off by the scene of fire ascending Logan's robes. Dori couldn't help but cringe at their celebration that came too soon.

Um... ouch. What the hell? Dazed by the lightning and wind spell that had just hit her, Ivy blinked a few times in an attempt to refocus. She noted that one of her opponents was now on fire; well, that was good at the very least... "Nice job," she would say to Elsa in as much of a supportive tone as she could muster.

The thing about any sport, when it came to performing at a high level, was concentration. A momentary loss of focus, a second of nerves, a fraction of hesitation; and the outcome hangs in the balance.

And that is exactly what Hui-Ming sees play out in this round. Both Dorion and Elsa seem to have the same thought – that their partner is being focused down and needs aid; and both cast healing on their respective partners. To the moderator’s admittedly amateurish eyes, Dorion’s spell seemed more effective than Elsa’s; though he could not quite figure out why.

The difference was in the actions of the other two. Ivy had predicted that the badgers would come after her this round, and seemed ready to swerve out of the way of Logan’s incoming Knockback spell. However, be it hesitation, or poor luck, or something else entirely, Ivy was just a moment too slow in her movements; and took the jinx full on. Hui-Ming winced on the impact. For all that they had the right strategy, implementation was all that mattered on the field.

And suddenly, a remarkably even duel tilts to favor the badgers. With more than half the duel left, would the Gryffindors be able to claw back the initiative?

Logan needed to give herself more credit, she had been practicing non-stop since joining the Hufflepuff dueling team yet consistently thought she was the worse duelist there was. Maybe she had just really bad luck when it came to her other duels because she was doing rather well so far this round. Okay, she was on fire but when was she not when it came to dueling it was normally what got her out in the first place.

Nicky flinched when she saw Ivy getting hit. It was not good. But they had to both keep pushing. For their team, for their house, for their friends. And they would do exactly that because they couldn't let that setback tak away their spirit. They had to be strong and confident in their power.

Ivy saw the jinx coming, but to her dismay, she was too slow and didn't dodge on time. Goddamnit! was her first thought. For a moment she felt winded and unable to breathe from the jinx, but quickly recollected herself. Even if things weren't looking good right now, she would keep on pushing forward.
