This event is part of the 2026 International Magical Olympic Games.
February 17th, 2026
Lake Bear (frozen), Russian Federation
The first day of the Games had come and gone, and now it was time for the second day of festivities and lighthearted competition: the Ice Hockey tournaments, taking place in the early evening. So as to avoid tiring out the student athletes, each team of four would only play one match, and the judges sitting on the sidelines of Lake Bear would judge based on points scored and showmanship who exactly would win the gold medal.

The judges were, as usual, made up of a panel of headmasters from the various international schools. @Aulis Vorozheykin, as the host of the Games, sat on one end; then down the line came @Alan Dolus from Ilvermorny, @Lawrence Maynard of Tenūsa, and finally Durmstrang's @Emery Albrecht. There were also (anonymous, undescribed, and unnamed) referees who would be up close and personal with each match, ensuring that no cheating would dare make it past their scrutinising eyes.

The match at present was Wizards Playing Hockey versus Subzero. The former team was entirely made up of Hogwarts students mostly from Ravenclaw but with one of the four a Gryffindor, whilst the latter boasted a pair from Beauxbâtons, as well as a student from Ilvermorny and the fourth hailing from the hallowed halls of Hogwarts.

Let the games begin...

HOW TO PLAY
There will be three rounds, each requiring a post of 200+ words. Please make sure you include your character's stats and abilities in your post (NO broom stats; you are not riding brooms).

Each round, you must perform an action from the Hockey Actions List. These are similar to the Quidditch Actions, but not all actions from Quidditch can be utilised in Hockey. As such, please carefully consult the list before deciding what action to play.

Other than the changes of actions, all other Quidditch rules apply, including order of rolls and penalty laps.

The sport of ice hockey has also introduced something called a showmanship point. Note that showmanship points will only be gained if the action is successful, and some actions can lose you showmanship points even if successful. At the end of the matches, in case of a tie in goals, showmanship points will be used to break the tie - but if a team has more goals, they win, plain and simple. Your first objective should be to score goals, and showmanship points come secondary.

At least one member of the team must owl the entire teams' action list to Aulis Vorozheykin before the posting deadline.

This event is moderated and it was required to sign up for it ahead of time. Please do NOT post here if your character is not signed up.
Please do not godmod Aulis or any of the other judges.

Maisie knew about this sport from muggle school. It wasn't a huge thing the way it was in America or Canada, but the city was home to the Glasgow Clan hockey team. And it seemed pretty similar to the few unofficial Quidditch matches she'd been in. So, she felt like she had some idea of what she would be doing. Plus, she would be flanked by good friends, Addie and Robin, as well as Frederick, who'd been very valuable in a recent Quidditch match. Maybe they weren't the traditional hockey team, but what they lacked in experience they had made up for in enthusiasm.

Maisie had done her very best to try to make these heavy uniforms look a little lighter. In truth, it wasn't much—you couldn't really alter something borrowed from another school. But she did crochet little wolf charms to hang from the helmets inspired by Robin's constant fight for those unjustly persecuted. Today, they too were underdogs, in a sport they didn't know well and up against people they also didn't know. But if she were going to guess, they looked capable.

Her brown eyes slid towards the goal she would be guarding. Here on the lake, she wasn't sure if it would be harder or easier than the Quidditch hoops. Where her broom had never let her down before, now it was just these skates. These skates and her friends, who she had greeted eagerly. Because, indeed, it was time for wizards (and witches!) to play some hockey.

At the rate he was going, Aodhan was going to call himself the "Jack of All Trades." Or maybe the "Sports King Extraordinaire." No—the "Athlete of All Athletes"? ... Okay, maybe he'd need to sit down and really workshop a proper title, but the fact he earned one was still there, and he refused to let it go unacknowledged.

Seriously, though, just how many sports matches had he taken part of within the last year?

There were his official quidditch matches, which were a given. Then there was the mock quidditch match in the summer—which he won—and that wonderfully violent game of wizard chess—which he also won. Because he was a winner. But not only that, there was a another match of quidditch he refused to actually talk about since only wins mattered, and an unofficial race he won. Not to mention his place in dueling, even if that involved more theoretical aspects than active participation. And now he was playing hockey. In Russia.

Surely he was reaching some kind of legendary status by now. Oh, what if he had people call him "Mr. Worldwide," since his endeavors were taking him to a completely different country? He liked that one a lot, actually. It sounded familiar too, though he couldn't exactly recall from where.

Anyway, back to the matters at hand: Russia, hockey, and ice... everywhere.

Now, ice wasn't a huge deal to him, but it also wasn't common. He was born and raised in California after all, and even with moving to Scotland in his later years, there was still the imprint of sunny days and short-sleeve weather. Ice didn't quite make it into that equation, meaning today was a brand-new experience with brand-new faces for teammates. (Ah, but there was one face he could recognize, if just vaguely. She was the primary reason he could slide across the ice without tripping, even if he'd never admit that out loud.)

Regardless, the novelty of it all left him feeling noticeably giddy as he skated onto the frozen lake. The frigid air nipped at his skin and left his cheeks flushed, yet a wide smile was plastered across his face. And once his teammates also managed to step onto the ice, he shot them a thumbs-up.

"We got this in the bag, guys. No way you lose with Mr. Worldwide on your team." Yeah. He was really sticking with that.

The lake was frozen solid, its icy surface stretching across the equally frozen landscape. Frederick stopped at the edge, dressed in his newly acquired hockey uniform, taking in his surroundings before stepping forward and gliding onto the ice. Ice skating wasn’t new to him, he had done it a few times during childhood in his hometown, but the sport itself certainly was. Even so, despite not knowing much about ice hockey or its rules, Fred didn’t hesitate to join. He loved sports and anything that felt like an adventure.

Gliding confidently over the thick layer of frozen water, he skated a small loop to warm up, waving to his teammates as he passed near them. He greeted them with a friendly smile, calling out their names, “Hi, Maisie! Robin. Adeline.” Frederick didn’t know the last two very well, but he knew they were friends of Maisie, with whom he had played an unofficial Quidditch match before. Making friends came easily to him, and even though the three girls were still more acquaintances than anything else, he felt no difficulty fitting in.

On the other side of the lake, in the opposing half, Frederick spotted a familiar face, Aodhan, the Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, where Fred played as reserve Keeper. He didn’t greet him just yet but made a mental note to do so after the match. Slowing to a stop to take his position, Frederick rested his stick on the ice, gripping it with both hands. He couldn’t help but feel a slight sense of unfamiliarity, something he certainly wouldn’t have felt if he were holding a broom instead of wearing skates, gripping a stick and adjusting a helmet.

Beaming from ear to ear, her braid already a mess, Rome clutched her helmet in one hand while the other stuffed a pen deep into the pocket of her hockey unform—just in case there were some autographs to sign after the match. This was it. Her moment. Time to remind everyone exactly who she is. They should be grateful to be in the presence of such greatness, honestly.

Hockey was a sport she knew well. The city of Geneva offered a variety of winter sports during its most promising season and whenever Papa had business there, he would bring her along and drop her into a rink with a bunch of children her age. Most of the days they would play "Who's afraid of the bogeyman?"—a rather chaotic chase across the ice that taught her balance, speed and how to think clearly with adrenaline pumping through her veins. Hockey was perhaps played a lot less, but it was present nonetheless. Besides, she had always been naturally gifted at everything she touched…right? This was a piece of cake for Romélie.

Her blades cut through the ice with ease as she joined her team. Ah yes! She was quite proud of the ensemble she had gathered together. They weren't, of course, half as good as her, but they would do! She already knew Maurice Andrieux, her fellow Beauxbatons classmate and Quidditch teammate. He was reliable on the field, but seemed to have this whole lone-wolf aesthetic going on for him.

The other two, she had only met a couple of days ago. At Koldovstoretz, on ice no less. The youngest one, Cassidy, was his name—what a girly name for a boy—was as good on skates as she was, annoyingly even better, though she'd never admit it out loud. The kid was a gold mine of talent. After a brief interaction with him she had found out he was…well for one, American (bleh) and actually trained in hockey. Bullseye!

Then there was her third teammate. The one who practically face-planted and took her down with him in the process. He was BAD at skating the first time she met him. Naturally, she had to step in and show him how it's done—just some light charity work for her.

Rome slid into position, her eyes zeroing on the opposite team. She had absolutely zero clue who the randoms were, but they didn't look capable or intimidating at all. A wicked grin spread across her face as she called out to her team "Let's sweep the floor with them boys."

Adeline had never even heard of hockey. If it hadn't been for the stubborn persistence of her friends, she would never have volunteered to take a position on the ice. Robin, Maisie, and a first year named Fred would make up the rest of the Spinks girl's team, aptly and bluntly named "Wizards Playing Hockey". What a novel concept.

The Russian cold was unforgiving, biting, and vicious. Thankfully, the refined bulk of their uniforms provided a shield from the icy wind, something she would have to thank Maisie for later. Adeline reached for the crocheted wolf charm dangling from her helmet, twisting it about in her gloved hand. Maisie had made wonderful work of sprucing up their borrowed uniforms with the hand-woven charms being a team favorite addition. The wolves felt like a fiercer representation of how Adeline admittedly saw herself and her team; the underdogs.

Stepping onto the ice sent butterflies into Adeline's stomach. Nerves began to settle in, before being abruptly iterrupted by a moment of shared warmth and a kind face . “Hi, Maisie! Robin. Adeline.” Frederick, her teammate, called out. Adeline didn't know the boy well, but a friend of Maisie's was always a friend of her own. "Heya, Fred." Addie offered a small smile. "Good luck out there today. We got this." The ravenclaw girl flashed him a thumbs up, before turning to Robin and Maisie, offering a nod of solidarity to her beloved teammates.

Adeline's attention shifted to the unknown; who would they be facing? She shifted her attention to the opposite end of the ice, eyeing her opponents from across the glittering lake. The girl took a deep, steadying breath before turning her gaze from the rival team and back to her friends. Soon enough they would know exactly what they were up against. Until then, the best thing she could do is focus on herself, her team, and their plan.

You know, maybe these Wizards weren't so bad after all if they liked to play Hockey too. His very first year at Ilvermorny had been .... well, Lachlan wasn't the best student but he sure made up for whatever he lacked with indomitable spirit! Nothing would stop him from having the best time at Wizard School, even if he missed Montana and his teammates on the rink. He'd simply make new friend right here and now with that girl who had spotted him shaking off the frost yesterday with his usual puck antics that he'd often mindlessly do while waiting for his turn during practice. Imagine how much cooler Hockey could've been if they were slinging spells too! Lachlan would simply have to create it one day.

" LET'S GOOOO BOYS AND, UHH, NOT BOY! " A glance over to Romélie while bringing his stick over his head to slap it against his team mates as they game was about to begin. He was told their names yesterday but Lachlan hadn't been paying enough attention to remember any of them.

With his stick in hand and eyes focused on where the puck was about to land, Lachlan was told that he'd be playing Defense (not his usual position) but it mean all he had to do was slam his way into the others and be disruptive as possible. " Good luck! " Regardless, Lachlan was excited to do something that felt like breathing to him.

As he stood in his spot, Lachlan was clearly younger than most of the other players. Luckily for the puck head, Lachlan didn't know what fear was and was ready to show what six years of Hockey in the Muggle World equated to for these fancy, shmancy wizards.

𝙈aurice believed it quite possible that he was destined for failure.

The series of events that led to him standing out in the middle of the Russian cold in a pair of clunky skates was a hopeless entropy of ambition. At age four, his parents had signed him up for tee ball with the hopes of sparking a deep-rooted passion in the boy, not accounting for his sisters' bold plans. At age seven, he was signed up for little league, a second desperate attempt at pushing him further in the sport. And it worked, somewhat. He liked baseball. It was structured, and simple, and boring. Realistic.

Magic had changed things. Beauxbatons had changed things. Quidditch was not like baseball, at least not in the ways he was used to, and certainly not boring. It had been impulsive that he would select the only physical outdoor sport that didn't involve a wand, and a pathetic attempt at restoring some sense of normalcy. Hockey was actually a step in the right direction in that regard, though his experience with the sport was few and far between.

What had lumped him with this group of extroverts was also a mystery. Romélie had been a surprise attack of a friendship, one that he was eternally grateful for and also eternally perplexed by. He had known her vaguely through quidditch, despite his unintentional inclination towards keeping his teammates at an arms length, and the past few weeks had seemed to spiral into the closest shape of a friendship Maurice had developed in years.

Blades cutting ice was a familiar sensation. His natural rosacea was bad enough, and with the added layer of fresh snowfall and biting cold, his cheeks were flushed bright red all the way down to his chest. Luckily, goalie uniforms were pretty much all-encompassing, so the entirety of his slim silhouette was buried under layers of padding.

Each of his teammates slipped out a less-than-witty call of encouragement, the collection of wild personalities bringing a soft smile to his face. Without much mind for pep, Maurice favored a quiet laugh and a shake of his head before skating to his starting position in front of the goal.

Shards of ice skimmed across the frozen lake as Robin came to a quick stop, albeit a little clumsily, as she waved her arm and stick to keep her balance. Hockey wasn't new to Robin - street hockey at the nearby recreation club was a favorite amongst her siblings when rugby had lost its appeal during the colder seasons. She had memories of whacking her older brothers knees with a wooden stick when they were able to maneuver the puck from her control, and she remembered the subsequent times she would spend in the makeshift penalty box (what the kids referred to as The Bench) as a result. Robin was also not a stranger to ice skating, though she didn't consider herself particularly practiced. She'd been to the ice rink a handful of times over her youth and didn't feel as if it were too different from roller blading - a pastime that Robin had always enjoyed immensely. So when Maisie had offered to sign them up for Ice Hockey in Russia, she'd hesitated for only a moment before happily agreeing.

The wolf charm Maisie had crocheted for the team spun from the momentum of her sudden halt, swinging as Robin looked over her teammates already gathered for the international event. "Hey guys, how are we feeling?" She put one of her gloved hands on her hips and leaned onto her stick, words muffled as she struggled to speak through her mouth guard. "Fredrick," Robin acknowledged her teammate skating past her with a smile, impressed by his apparent ease on the ice. Addie offered a few words of encouragement, and Robin pounded her friend on the back, eager to get the game going. She didn't know any of her competitors, although one kid did look a little familiar.

"Did you guys know that they call trash-talking in Hockey chirping?" She asked with a grin, turning to take her position as Winger. "Chirp chirp, bitches." She added in a low voice with a wink as she kicked past her teammates, hoping to ease some of Addie's tension. Robin felt grateful to have a friend like Maisie, who would urge her out of her comfort zone, and to Adeline for joining them in good spirits in this endeavor despite her obvious unfamiliarity with the sport. Just having the two girls here alone set her at ease, alongside the seemingly easygoing and talented Fredrick. Robin knew their team would be worth considering and hoped to have a bit of fun. And... maybe kick some ass while they're at it.
