Sprawling across the great mountains that towered over Tenūsa lay the most magical structures the isle had to offer. They were not just mere feats against gravity and physics but symbolic of the ever growing understanding of the island folk. They knew that tradition was important, and they would never forget, but acknowledging and respecting the past does not require binding yourself to it. No the Isle and its inhabitants were always looking to grow, to thrive. So while many of the older structures still sprawled across the jungle floor, these marvels carved into rock and crossed the expanses of the sky while never taking away from the natural beauty of the place.

One would think up so high that roots could not reach, that the rot that was beginning to engulf the jungle floor would be a distant problem. Such beliefs would be quickly realised as foolish. Everything in this island was connected. Being made out of magic itself many believed the island to be alive in a sense, and as such each and every part of it was one and the same. Much like a body, the infection could spread no matter the initial cut. This disease that was claiming the ancient haven seemed to be intelligent enough to use that magic, to guide it to where it wished to be. To guide it to the creatures it wished to take, and as such from the draping vines and tunnelled pockets their inky ichor appeared ready to strike.

When the fiendish plant writhed its way into this particular room it discovered quickly how poor a decision it had made. Roll: 19 For these were not young students able to be pricked and preened to their satisfaction. No these were fully grown wizards and witches from across the globe. If the plant life wanted to thrive amongst them it had to be tactical, but even that was against its favour. The tangled web of inky vines that snuffed out the light were quick on the ball. Arturo was a master in conservation and would be able to tell instantly that something was off, much to the same as Ruckus who had tended to Hogwarts grounds for many a year. This strain of what so clearly resembled Devil's snare was acting in so peculiar a way it could only be deemed unnatural. Though even that analysis seemed too small. It was more akin to against nature itself. But as screams began to echo from the surrounding student homesteads one thing was certain. These wizards and witches had to utilise their wisdom to protect their charges.
Moderation Note: You have all awoken or been awoken by another to see the dark vine tendrils making their way towards you. As stated Arturo and Ruckus are able to identify the base variant of the plant but if you feel your character could too feel free as you are all adults. Screams can be heard both from far below and from all around echoing through the mountains making it hard to pin point. A few tendrils block your exit, what will you do?

"I see with more than my eyes, so I may guide the way for those who cannot."

XXXXXFollowing an interesting reunion the night prior, Akinyi had made the decision to go to sleep early, and get some much needed sleep in the tropical paradise.

She woke to screams.

Akinyi bolted up from bed, eyes wide. It took her a moment of clarity to remember where she was, and why—and before she could even assume that the screams had been a manifestation of her dreams, of her imagination, she saw a dark form making it’s way towards her. As it creeped towards her, Akinyi’s mind went far faster than it usually did—but she was no longer a small child, unsure of her movements. She was a grown witch, one that could take care of herself.

She stood and slid her legs off of the bed, grabbing her wand from her nightstand, clutching the wood into her palm until it surely left a mark. As the form got closer, the details became more clear. A plant, a vine of some kind. Clearly magical, if it’s growing into the homestead was any indication. Aside from the basic facts, Akinyi didn’t know much else. But something she did know was that plants were often flammable. Very briefly, Akinyi considered the fact that she was literally in a wooden structure, also likely flammable. Thankfully, she brushed this thought off, with the knowledge that the people of Tenūsa very likely had thought about this detail, and in an effort to prevent any damage to the structures from wildfires, would have ensured they were inflammable. Right?

Then, Akinyi thrust her wand at the intruder, the incantation “Incendio!” escaping her mouth as she narrowed her eyes. This plant would not come harm her, nor her fellow housemates. Then, a thought ticked into Akinyi’s head. Her students were here, on this island, with her. They were in danger, if the vine posed any sort of threat to her and her housemates. She nearly screamed at the thought of children as young as eleven going through this nightmare. Just then, there was another scream from below, similar to what she had heard in awaking her from her slumber. She had to go, make sure they were alright.

Akinyi glanced back at the vine before making the decision that the safety of children outweighed her curiosity of the plant. She looked positively mad, striding about in bare feet, a pale nightdress, and a bonnet, clutching her wand as if it would save her from this nightmare. She took a breath. She would be okay, she had to be.

Akinyi made her way towards her door and opened it with ease, before banging on the doors of the rooms of her housemates. She was not going to save the kids asses alone, and who better to be beside than other adults? Akinyi was walking about with her wand raised, ready to cast at anything that happened to twitch the wrong way. “Wake up!” She called as she went, voice rising above any noises from the outdoors. Her serious tone was far more gave than usual—while under normal circumstances she simply sounded sure of herself, today, her tone was filled with grim determination.

“It seems we’re under attack.”

What a cruel master reality was. Expectations: awakening to the chirp of birdsong and the fluttering of butterflies on his windowsill, with a breakfast prepared for him and his roommates he could eat over shared conversations and revelry. Sleeping in, a hot morning bath, excitement at every word and well-deserved break.

Instead, all Anthonie got were screams.

He sat bolt upright in his bed as the banshee-like wails filled his ears, jolting him out of the sweet hum of a peaceful dream. Eyes wide, he searched his room for any sign of its source, and as the sound settled and his vision came back empty-handed, he was almost relieved. It had been a figment of his imagination, a fragment of his subconscious— Until he heard the words in bellowing English and the screams started up again.

Wake up !

The unmistakable voice of Akinyi Odera was what truly shook him out of his slumber. Frantically, he straightened and pulled on his clothes, sliding into socks and trainers as he stood. All his anticipation for the day ahead drained away yet he was alert as ever as the door was pushed ajar and Akinyi’s voice came clear as the morning time’s sky. He glanced around for the perpetrator of the attack, the root of the screams he would have no qualms of killing. Grasping his wand from the bedside table, he shifted his stance into a defensive one, readying his arms as he set his eyes on the creaking door.

Yet he would realise the beast was no fauna but formidable display of flora. It peeked into his room, slithering its way towards his bed like a snake towards a mice den. He pointed his wand towards the semi-sentient creature, cautiously stepping around the tendrils of vine that threatened to lick at his shoes. Writhing its way closer to him Anthonie took note of the inky, constricting plant, mind racing across the diagrams and graphics of his kusoma kya maisha classes. That was the Devil’s Snare.

Recognition crossed Anthonie's face, and a hint of anger edged itself into blue eyes usually tranquil as the face of a summertime's lake. Today, they took on the nature of a raging sea under a clear cerulean sky, composed, yet with an unbelievable paroxysm of tightly leashed ire. He bursted out of his room, only to see a dastardly sight at the door, blocking their exits and only way to the screaming students. Burning with determination and with the swiftness of fire spreading across oil, he clutched his wand of willow wood, flicked it, drew it back, and flicked once more, incanting with the drive of a mother hen who had lost her chicks, “ Lumos Maxima !

Anthonie watched as his spell took effect and soon, the heat of choler faded away as a waterfall washed over his eyes and he calmed his breaths. The rise and fall of his chest steadied, and muscles still tensed managed to loosen enough into proper working. There was no time for the guilt of yesterday’s glee to catch up to him, and even less time to think of options when one was strikingly clear. To panic was to fail, and he could not fail the young charges under his protection. “ Exactly what do you mean by ‘guts’ ? ” “ I mean, grace under pressure.

Without a second’s reconsideration of his priorities, Anthonie, brows furrowed and eyes set, surged forward at the vine intwined door, voice, under forceful composure, decisively leaving no room for an ounce of question, “ Our students.

"Wake up!"

The voice cut through Ruckus's sleep like a knife; before he even opened his eyes, he found himself standing, wand in hand. Upon opening them, he saw thick green vines assaulting the room. At first he considered snakes—this was the jungle after all. But no, constrictors didn't move like that, it was much worse: Devil's snare.

Ruckus took a deep breath before acting. Anthonie, Uagadou's headmaster, and Akinyi, Ruckus's fellow Hogwarts professor. were already moving. He was sure Arturo and Aulis would not be far behind. The flying professor had agreed to ferry a few Hogwarts students to this far off isle not necessarily out of the goodness of his heart, but to have a slight vacation, take in the salty brine of the sea mixed with brazen sun and humid air—and collect a few plant samples for his collection from the magical jungle. (These was not the type of plant sampling he had in mind.) And it had been nice to spend time with people closer to his age, though in the case of this room, you might still have to add everyone else's ages together to get to ole Ruckus's. Yet, he had felt bit out of sorts when entering the group yesterday—even though they were quite young, they had more illustrious and straightforward resumes than his own. It seemed his voice grew more sheepish and Scottish as the day wore on, as if to fully draw out his own perception that he was an interloper.

Now in this sort of pinch, Ruckus could only feel relieved that he had two headmasters, an ex-headmaster, and an especially erudite professor by his side.

He called to his colleagues in the room, "Shield yer eyes!" before pointing his wand at the center of the mass of vines and bellowing "Lumos Solem!"

Ruckus's wand would fill the room with sunlight, joining the light from Anthonie's wand and the fire Akinyi had started. But worse than blinding light was the sounds he could hear from outside their room.

Students. In Peril.

Anthonie echoed his thoughts aloud. The old man nodded, quickly stuffed his feet in his boots, which were lying close to his bed—his days on a ship had taught him to set up his sleep arrangements in a such way that he could leave a moment's notice—and responded, "They need us."

He had experienced situations with worse outcomes, but never with kids involved. The magical world always had a hint a danger, he even invited that hint into his flying classroom on occasion … but if each room had this number of vines … he shuddered to think of it.

AULIS VOROZHEYKIN.
KOLDOVSTORETZ. DIRECTOR OF STUDIES.

Russian. | English.
Spoken. | Thought.
Aulis was snoring. It wasn't unlike the Director of Studies at Koldovstoretz to sleep through minor disturbances, as the person in their shared High House who had slept in the same bed as him before would know all too well; the Russian was a heavy sleeper, not prone to awakening from the rustling of the bed or shifting of the blankets.

Screaming, however - now, that was a different story.

At Akinyi's yell, he blinked blurry eyes open, rubbing at them with one hand. "Damn, these English," he murmured underneath his breath, mind still foggy from just having woken up. After all, Aulis was not the kind to immediately pop out of bed all ready for the day - another reason why he was so loath to let anyone see this early-morning side of him, and why he was so reticent to allow those who had seen it to leave. His Russian was thick, too, his tongue not quite yet awake in these wee hours of the morn, words slurred together. "Let a man sleep, no? I need my beauty rest." And yet, the more his eyes opened and the sleepy fog was blinked away, the more it dawned upon him - rather quickly, actually, like an avalanche, all at once all of a sudden - that the scream was not simply to wake him up, like a well-dressed, curly-haired rooster, but because the house was under attack.

He was lithe and deft enough on his feet to dodge the vines that reached out to grab him like the squirrelly arms of a long-lost aunt intent on giving kisses as greetings. Several of his roommates were already awake - he heard the voices of all except Arturo, which was odd, for Art usually was awake well before him. Well. Maybe things had changed in the last three and a half years. It was dark, and several of his roommates seemed to want to take care of that - all right, then. Aulis would get rid of these vines in the best way he knew how to: by doing a controlled burn.

Incendio would not ever be dramatic enough for this Director.

The wand under his pillow was in his hand instead in an instant, and he whirled it over his head in large, showy circles as the incantation left his mouth, accompanied with a warning. "Is getting hot in here! Saevi Igninum!" Hopefully, a well-controlled ring of fire would drive away all these pesky plants and allow the beautiful head of Koldovstoretz to get the beauty sleep he so well deserved. Oh, and the rest of the tent occupants, too, he supposed.

Arturo had forgotten what socialization could feel that. It was mostly nice to be around other adults in academia, whereas his time now was mostly spent in solitude studying the wilds that now surrounded them. They couldn't actually hurt him like how other people could, the wilds were always safe unless altered by an unknown force. Nevertheless, even with Aulis snoring like a wildebeast in the corner, Arturo was happy to enjoy his time back at Tenūsa and quickly fell to asleep.

It wasn't until Art had this an astute feeling that he was pulled from sleep into the usual moans of a swamp until the shrieks from the forest began the pandemonium and Arturo was quick to grab his wand as he kept quiet and quickly began to assess the situation. Dark, coiled tendrils of Devil's Snare could be seen blocking them and aiming for their group. However, they seemed off. Perhaps enchanted? Arturo couldn't tell exactly with such distance and little light.

The adults moved responsibly as Arturo watched flames produced at wand tip, a burst of light, and Aulis' dramatic flare of a fire storm. He'd known the spell to counteract that when the time came but for now, it felt like protection would be best for their group. " Protego Maxmia. " With a hand raised, Arturo focused on a shield spell wide enough to protect all of them from these wicked vines.

MODERATION
With such adept wizardry on display it was no wonder that the adults in the Rumah Adat had tackled the devil's snare with clear and concise cohesion. A mastery display of different spells shot through the air like some kind of artistic ballet, whisps of fire from @Akinyi Oderadanced through a circling rapture of flame conjured by @Aulis Vorozhykin while gleams of sunlight shone through the room, illuminated by @Ruckus Weems and @Anthonie Engelbrecht. To anyone outside the homestead it would appear that the house was akin to a blazing sunset. Yet all that light and fiery heat certainly would've made thinks uncomfortable in the already humid landscape if not for the gentle protections of former Grand Seer @Arturo Reyes who gracefully shielded them from the spells effects.

As the light began to fade and the flicker of searing flames dwindled, all that remained was the foul scent of ash and rotting plant. Tendrils fell from the ceiling destined to hit these witches and wizards had they not been more careful. But far little did the group know that they were not out of the woods yet. The dark vines began to retreat from the attack collecting themself into a much tighter formation across the very exit they needed access to. Many of these astute professors had been correct to identify the plant, but they were also correct that this was no ordinary variant. Might it have been as Arturo thought enchanted, perhaps, but there was not the time to research that now. For more and more screams were rolling on the wind and whatever was happening past that door was imperative to reach.

Akinyi the first to rise would be the first to move, readying the flame that she had so instinctively shot again with the desperation to save her students. Only as she walked forward the plant showed that it was not without its own tricks. Vined tendrils raised up and lashed at her like devilish whips, and while she would manage to avoid them one thing was clear. Whatever this thing was, or whomever had control of it, it did not want them out without a fight.

XXXXXThoughts were traveling through Akinyi’s mind at the speed of light as she acted, each muscle bunching and moving as she commanded while her wand traced the necessary movement in order to cast Incendio. The flames burst from her wand-tip, hitting the magicked vines head on. Akinyi let out a short breath of relief. Her spell-casting hadn’t let her down, and she let her guard down for a split second.

Apparently, that was all the encouragement the vines needed to whip at her, the greenery making snapping noises in empty air, with the Runes Professor dancing out of it’s path, with seldom a yelp leaving her lips. “Those things are dangerous.” She said softly, eyes wide. That had certainly scared her. This messed up plant was out to get them, that was for certain.

Thankfully, Anthonie quickly reacted, with the spell “Lumos Maxima!” leaving his lips. Akinyi quickly turned, allowing for the light from his wand to take effect, watching the vines begin to shrink back. Devil’s snare. Of course. It was then that the Flying Professor stepped in, casting Lumos Solum, which was preceded by a warning to shield their eyes. Akinyi complied, hand quickly covering her eyes. Following the bright flash from his wand, Akinyi blinked her eyes fiercely, readjusting to the now seemingly dim room.

The three of them all agreed: their students were in peril, and they wouldn’t just sit back. A glance told her that the Koldovstoretz Headmaster had also cast, up on his feet and ready. Arturo, ever the quick-thinker, had cast “Protego Maxima”, protecting the group from any downsides their spells may have caused.

“We have to go. Protect our charges.” She said, eyes narrowing. This was the worst possible scenario for a literal vacation in Tenūsa. Her mind was going to the worst possible scenarios. What were they doing, right now? Had they managed to fight this monstrosity of a plant off, or were they beginning to succumb? She couldn’t let that happen. “Have we sufficiently beaten this one down? Is it over in here? We need to move.” She grimaced, quickly striding over to her luggage, and pulled out a black robe. The bonnet and slippers would just have to do for now, and the robe would be plenty.

She gave one last look around, before giving a slight sigh and beginning her course towards the door outside. She wasn’t actually sure if she would be in time, if she would be of sufficient help — “Hurry, we have to help.” — but at the very least, Akinyi had to attempt to help the children in very similar situations as herself.

AULIS VOROZHEYKIN.
KOLDOVSTORETZ. DIRECTOR OF STUDIES.

Russian. | English.
Spoken. | Thought.
The ring of fire that erupted from Aulis's wandtip was enough to char the vines around him into dead ash, burning hot but perfectly controlled, and for a moment he was reminded of the glory days of duelling at Koldovstoretz. Sure, he had all this power now as the Head, but what good was it if he so rarely got to cast spells as fun as this? The ghost of a smile still playing scales on his piano lips, he was brought back down to earth by the bonnet-clad lone woman amongst their group, the professor from Hogwarts. She was certainly the most practical of the bunch, pulling on a robe and making for the door - but, of course, what vines were left had concentrated themselves there, clearly making a block of the exit. "Is smart idea," he agreed under his breath, climbing down from his bed to help.

Aulis himself did not need to clad his body in anything different, for the well-fitting dark sweatpants and cutoff tank top were still well within his style, albeit perhaps a bit more casual than the students had ever seen him. If he did run into the few Russian attendees he was technically chaperoning here in this deep jungle, they would not think any lesser of his sleeping clothes. He did, however, slip on a pair of shoes, the laces magically tying themselves into tight knots - the perks of enchanted footwear - as he followed Akinyi to the front door.

"Students must be able to take care about themselves," he huffed at the woman as she grew nearer to the tangled exeunt, "but also is necessary to search for my frustrating cousin and get from him answers. Is normal for this wild school, no? With the attacks, is starting to feel bit like Hogwarts."

The low jab at two of his roommates' native school was only partially ill-intentioned; after all, Aulis had been a lowly Divination professor at Koldovstoretz when the attack on Hogsmeade had left seventeen of his school's students dead. Some of them had even been in his classes; he had watched them soar in the skies atop their uprooted brooms during Quidditch matches - and then they had all just been gone. Couple that in with the untimely death of his former boss, plus all the insanities that seemed to go wrong whenever Aulis himself visited the Scottish academy - well, suffice to say that he only now went because it was expected of him. He had not considered Tenūsa to be nearly as dangerous, and resolved, once more, to show these other schools what a proper good and safe time was like when they came to his home in the next month.

But the woman would not be able to leave unless they took care of the vines by the door, and it didn't seem like she was reaching for her wand or so much as trying to cast a spell. Aulis sighed, pulling out his own once more and lazily flicking it towards the pile of writhing plants by the door; just because he had been in Group 7 for his last few years of schooling didn't mean he carried any sort of particular love for the herbologist nature of things. "Diffindo," he drawled, hoping to slice an exit out for the overeager lady.

In something that felt coordinated, but was really the product of the power and knowledge in the room, the professors all unleashed different spells that threw the vines into a retreat. Though it didn't seem like they would relent without a fight. Odd, Devil's Snare was never this persistent. There was something strange about it; something Ruckus hadn't seen before. It was forming a barrier around their door. Was it usually this intelligent? "I don't like the way this snare is behaving."

His fellow Hogwarts professor, Akinyi, reiterated the need to get to the students, and the flying professor nodded in agreement. Yet the head of Koldovstoretz scoffed at the idea and subsequently made a jab at the safety of the Scottish magical school. Ruckus gripped his wand tighter, knuckles turning white. But that was the only indication that comment affected him. On one hand, the Russian had a point: Hogwarts seemed particularly dangerous as far as magical schools went. Yet, if Ruckus had learned one thing in his life, it was that life itself was particularly more dangerous than most imagined. And that never excused not helping those who needed it.

"Well, I'm sure the Koldovstoretz students are fine and dandy, but I'd like to check in on at least the Hogwarts ones, eh? I could use some fresh air at the very least." Ruckus responded, his voice steady and cold. Earlier that day, the Scottish man had felt out of his league, surrounded by what seemed far more accomplished witches and wizards. But now he realized this director of studies had barely enough years to cultivate chin hairs. "And if ye use diffindo, we'll be here all night cutting through the godforsaken things. It's clearly some frankenstein Devil's Snare."

Ruckus aimed his own wand at the knotted mess of vines: "Incendio tria!"
