This day was not off to a good start, Matthew had barely started at Hogwarts and he couldn't feel more out of his depth. His classes would be going well if he could actually find them, he swore that it was more than just the staircases that moved in this place. Having gotten particularly lost en route to his flying lesson that morning he stopped to ask some older students who were stood talking for some help. They didn't seem particularly friendly to his disturbance and so he felt it best to cut to the chase asking them if they could help him find his way. To his surprise they had been very kind and pointed him in the directions comforting him that he would get used to it. Only they weren't really being kind at all, half an hour later he found himself back exactly where he started to find the older students laughing hysterically.

He wasn't particularly a good student at his previous school but he had always made a point of attending lessons, they weren't going to catch him out on that. Here though everything seemed impossible like he didn't belong. Maybe he didn't the thought cut him deep as he felt tears begin to prick in his eyes. The older students took off leaving him in the corridor alone, still laughing at a successful prank. Matthew would have shook it off and moved on, only he swore as they walked away he heard a word that every muggle-born knew even one as lost as himself. The thought that people here could really still believe his blood to be dirty was the straw that broke an already far too stressful day. Matthew was as clueless as ever at where to turn but the one thing Hogwarts never seemed to hide from him was the library. Books had always been his safe space and that was what he needed now more than anything!

Sitting down at a library desk he took out his books, he may gain a detention for missing class but he'd be damned if he would fall behind in his studies. It was hard to read the pages with tears fogging his vision but he pushed on wiping them as he went unable to stop hearing the word in his head especially with the deafening silence of the library. Block it all out he told himself but he couldnt. Just as he was about to pack up and leave, determined to resign himself to his room and draw up a map, a red headed girl came walking up to the desk across from his. He attempted to hide his face knowing his puffy eyes would give him away in an instant and buried his head in his papers.

-It's alright – I say, it's okay - Listen to what I say- Dennis Waterman

It makes me feel good to wear the old clothes of the past. It reminds me of the days at home, when I had my parents but... They're not with me. Not anymore anyway. At least as long as I'm away from my big brother, I'm fine. Right now, he must be in detention because of his stupid things in his boarding school. I don't even remember what this one is called, but it's useless. After all, by dint of missing class, I should also be in detention to.

At the library, the refuge where I had spent time with my best friend, I found nothing but comfort between the book libraries of the fall ball, of our own fall ball. It was a remarkable moment, I can't say more. This time, taking my courage in both hands, I found him in a chair beside a boy who must have been my age. Then, once I was seated, I found myself trying to figure out why I felt like the boy was crying. Maybe it was that?

As soon as I thought of it, as soon as I found myself talking to him. But what was I doing like that? Why was it going so fast? "Hey? Hey? All right? What... What's going on?" I said, a little panicked. In that kind of situation, I felt really embarrassed. I hope it was at least polite and... Not a bit annoying...

As if this day couldn't fail to further embarrass him he had quite obviously been caught. Perhaps it was for the best, he was starting to ruin some of the papers he had written on with his tears in an attempt to hide his face. Looking up to properly take in the girl sat across from him he wiped his eyes on the sleeve of his jumper. She was wearing a very interesting outfit and it made him long for the clothes he had back home.

Matthew could hear the panic in her voice and realised he better respond quicky if he wanted to keep her from drawing more attention towards him. "Hey, yeah," he paused slightly to wipe more tears from his eyes, "It's just been one of those days you know, when everything seems out to get you. Hogwarts is a lot harder than muggle school." He felt a little defeated by this admission as he knew how much he loved being here. He supposed there were always awful people wherever you went like Luke his old school bully but I suppose this time he just wanted things to be different.

He spoke up once again this time composing himself a little more "I'm sorry if I'm disturbing your studying I can leave if you want?" he said already starting to pack up his stuff assuming the worst.

This corset was pretty tight, next time I put this dress on, I promise I'll take it off. Well, was this boy trying to hide his game from me? It's easy to say he's okay, but does he really mean it in his head or in the depths of his heart? Is he really okay? After his answer, he paused for a short time and I waited for him to say something else, before revealing that yes, life here was hard when you were born a Muggle. These words stunned me; Is he a muggleborn? Muggle-born... There are so few of them, I'm a little too surprised! This guy is a muggleborn like me!

But what should I say to what he has just said? I'm embarrassed, is this normal? We have one thing in common, but how can I be able to address this? If he has more sadness, it's worse! "Hey... I understand... How to put it; I miss it too! I'm just like you. Well, I think so. I miss it. I miss my family, I miss my friends... I miss everything." That's when I realize that it hurts me to be away from home. It hurts all people in our situation, I think. I know there's not so many people in this situation but what did I just said is real.

Packing up his things, the girl seemed to ponder on his actions but her words snapped him from his worries. He had only met a handful of other muggle-born first years but every time he did it brought him a sense of comfort. Like all of his worries about being an outcast, about not fitting in were really just a natural part of the school. The girl had a kind face and seemed to understand his problems instantly.

Realising this may be his only chance to confirm he wasn't alone in his struggles he decided to unpack his things and sit down across from the girl. As he spoke his words trembled slightly "You- you do? You mean, you're a muggle-born too? I haven't met many of us." he sighed a defeated sigh before continuing "I never thought I'd be saying that I missed muggle school but this world is so confusing and there isn't exactly a guide book for us lot!" he hoped the girl understood. Introducing himself he offered out his hand "I'm Matthew by the way, Slytherin if you couldn't tell" he notioned towards the Slytherin crest on his robes.

Waiting a beat he took in the girls kind disposition and wondered whether or not to ask the thing that had been lingering on his mind for the last few hours. He had no intentions of upsetting her too but he felt so utterly alone in the world that he decided he must, even if just to ease his own mind. "Can I ask you something?" Matthew would've usually waited for an answer but the question was weighing too heavy to be left now that he had started, "has anyone ever called you a mud... a mud... well you know what I'm trying to say right?"

I was sure it would surprise people that I was also a muggle-born. This particular boy, but that's okay, it's the fact that in general, it's weird and... Rare too. I don't really have any friends who are. Well I don't know, I've never asked, but I think I'm alone in this category of my friends. Now, not so much, it seems. Well, talking doesn't make us friends but I feel like this conversation won't lead me anywhere, this guy is really interesting.

So I end up answering him, after his questions. What a recognition I have! "Me neither, frankly. Indeed, I am one and this world is not as I thought it was. When I was little, my parents used to tell me fairy tales with castles on clouds, whereas now I'm learning how to levitate things myself. I'm getting lost, it's not possible. So I get it, you're not alone." Then, a mention of name. So it's up to me to introduce myself. This boy is named Matthew, so, from Slytherin. "I'm Rowan, Gryffindor. I wished be at Slytherin but that's not what the Sorting Hat decided."

Politely, as if never seen before, (because not everyone is polite) He asked me if he could ask me a question. "But of course, go for it!" He said something like someone had already called me a mud... Mud what? His word wasn't finished and I didn't understand why. His face seemed negat, so for sure it's not positive, but I've never been called. like that, otherwise I'd know. "Mud what? I've never heard of that... Someone called you that? It's negative? Tell me all!"

Matthew cheered up a little at the notion of talking to a Gryffindor, other than in the general chit chat of class he had yet to actually have a conversation with really anyone but those in his own house, he had hoped to make more friends than he had so far and maybe this was his chance. Rowan was a pretty incredible name in his opinion, it sounded very magical in his mind. The girl seemed disappointed to not be in Slytherin like Matthew, which he understood, he hadn't hoped for any specific house, in fact he really wasn't sure he fit the architype for any of them but he had met some wonderful people in Slytherin so far that had eased his worries.

Happy for the Rowan's permission to ask her his question he continued on. When she had answered his question there was a confidence and passion about her, like she would have defended him right there and then despite only meeting him moments ago. It wasn't necessarily the reaction he expected to hear but maybe it was for the best, after all, if she didn't know the word maybe he shouldn't tell her. It would only upset her he told himself, but did she have a right to know. He thought this over in his head and settled on the decision to tell her. Deciding he wouldn't say where he had heard it so she didn't need to know people still used it, he began speaking, hoping it wouldn't upset her like it had him. "It's a kind of insult for people like us, with muggle parents. So pretty negative, the word is... Mud blood. Essentially it means dirty blooded as we don't come from a magical family."

Worrying she would be upset if she found out the truth he caught himself lying. It was a skill he had picked up a long time ago, not usually for ill intent, he had just found lying often protected people's feelings from the harsh truth of the world. "No! No one called me it, I was reading about it in a book on the Second Wizarding World and it upset me, that's why I was crying. I guess I just didn't expect in a world of magic that there was such intolerance." It was a smart lie he thought to himself, he was an avid reader and had absorbed every bit of History of Magic he could since arriving. He sat gauging her reaction and hoping he hadn't ruined a shot at a new friend.

What else can I say that this boy is understanding? And he expresses himself well at that. The best part is that he's just like me; I'm a born muggle and understand how important it is to be an outsider among muggles or a less sober one while you're among wizards. The worst part is that we all have the same abilities, except maybe there are some who are partly a certain creature. I don't have any of that. I feel even more apart and different now that I realize it. And then it's juts right now that I realize that? Sometimes, I see that I'm really strange.

Oh my god, an expression like that can't be said out loud, let's see! It's really cruel! No one should say that, no one should have created that, and no one should be treated like that, my god! "I didn't know that, but here... It makes me furious! Are there people who use such a nasty term towards people like us? I don't believe it! Who is the idiot who said that, who created it? I can't let such a thing pass!" I said, really, really angry. I cannot let pass something like that.

"Oh, ok, I'm glad to hear that. If someone had really treated you like that, they'll see what they see, and maybe it's a fist on their nose then." No one will ever pass over mine. Never. Muggle-born people are like me. Like a second family so if they treat someone else in my family badly, it's going to go very, very badly, Wooden's cross, iron cross, if I lie, I'm going to hell, promised on my life.

There it was again only even deeper this time, the girl had a fire inside of her that wasn't just burning but raging she was incredible, he thought. Matthew noticed that when she got angry her hair seemed to almost glow like she felt it with her entire body, it was miraculous and he was sure she meant every word she said. He was pleased he didn't tell her the truth now not so much for the sake of protecting her feelings but more so he was quite sure those older kids wouldn't have stood a chance older or not. Watching her get riled up by the word imbued Matthew with a sense of pride for being Muggle-born, that the two of them were just as worthy of magic as any of them if not more! He wished he had her confidence and fire, he was soft, which only recently did he recognise as a strength, but he felt in moments like this it would be nice to have that spark and really speak his mind.

"You're amazing!" the words kind of came out before his brain had a chance to recognise them "I mean... you just you're so passionate, and sure of yourself, I'd follow you into battle any day, point the way to those noses!" he giggled at the thought of himself and Rowan going around punching out the intolerance from people. He noticed his tears had finally stopped as he was watching the girl with admiration, he was pretty sure in that moment he could see exactly why she was a Gryffindor even if she hadn't. There was a true bravery in defending people you hardly knew and she was ready to fight for him instantly. Was there anything more Gryffindor than that.

"You're right too, it's nasty! I hope it isn't common anymore I believe it was mostly used during the wizarding wars as they were essentially a fight of blood superiority but thankfully the right side won! I guess we will just have to prove to everyone that they can't mess with us Muggle-borns" he felt her influence rubbing off on him as he smiled confidently at her, "Did you say you were learning the levitation charm? I'm currently studying the wand-lighting and extinguishing charms, maybe we could hang out a while?" he hoped she would agree as he really could use with more friends and she inspired him.

Me, amazing? Pf... No one has ever said that about me. I'm different, I'm weird, I'm someone no one thinks is cool, I'm someone people don't usually like... My current status as a Muggle born doesn't help! But well, of course... Still, this boy sees me differently and that's important to me, such comments, such kindness. "Thank you. No one has ever been like me, sometimes people think I'm weird to defend opinions so strongly, but it's important for me and I think it's normal... But I'm not like every body. Most people think I'm weird because of that... But now, we're a team no?" And I made a slightly disgruntled face at the end of my sentence.

I finally took my mind off things a bit and continued to listen to his tirade. It's exciting, he's passionate like me. I find it sad that our difference is frowned upon, but if that's what they see, they're blind and we have good eyesight. "Yes, there are people who think they're too good for nothing. I hope they died in that famous war, with all my heart." I wanted to start working and fortunately, that's what he proposed. "I was usually talking! I would love to work with you! So, the wand-lighting han? Ok, we should go in a place with no light no? I have a suggestion! Are you ok with a meeting tonight in the corridors? next to the painting of the lady with the violin? I'll be there fifteen minutes before curfew, are you okay?" Did i say, happy to maybe have a meeting.
