Three Ships
Durmstrang
==================== Ilvermorny
==================== The lake was like a great, dark mirror that reflected the overcast sky. It had been threatening to rain all morning and just now the heavens would open up and unleash her fury. A peal of thunder would herald Durmstrang's arrival. large, heavy drops of ran would make a splash landing. Ripples of water would disturb the surface. Onlookers, those awaiting the massive wooden ship that had carried the northern students in the years past would draw their umbrellas, cast the umbrella charm or simply suffer. The chill of winter was receding but it was not quite spring in spite of the anticipated spring celebration: the Blossom Ball.
It was 1700 hours and it was raining.
It was from beneath the choppy waters that something would come. A great wooden structure would breach the surface. First the main mast, then the rest of the ship. A massive, stoic, aged structure would bob with an eerie silence as waves washes the stony shore of the great lake. The waves would lap at the soles of those who came too close to the water's edge.
Then there would be nothing but the patter of rain.
Durmstrang was known for their near militaristic tradition. Row boats would be lowered into the waters one-by-one and they would row to the shore in an orderly fashion. Their trunks with them, they depended on their strength alone. There were no servants, no assistants or house elves to ply them with praise, to ameliorate their suffering or to reduce their burden. Durmstrang did not arrive alone. As if someone had planned to arrive just a few moments late, a rolling wave would capsize several of the Durmstrang rowboats. [Feel free to claim you came before or after if you are not comfortable with being capsized.] There was a bit of "healthy competitiveness" potentially involved in this display, the ship significantly larger, the school was known for their "theatrics" and this day was no exception. Little did the students know, the competition had already started and Ilvermorny's staff cast the first volley.
The Mistress' Mercy arrived only ten minutes after Durmstrang's Crusader, a volley of fireworks a trademark of the school would fire off as the students were lowered into the restless lake. Admittedly, the Durmstrang rowers were more proficient but the distracting nature of Ilvermorny's [possibly obnoxious] presence had slowed their journey to the shoreline. Yes, some of the Durmstrang students had capsized and had resorted to swimming ashore, their belongings would have to be recovered at a later date. Others had protected themselves and their wares but took on water, and still a few lucky others rocked unsteadily but safety in the lake. The Ilvermorny students in some cases tipped over on their own, their distinct lack of a rowing team was sadly obvious. There were some however that made their way to the stony shore safely.
The pouring rain would prove relatively unpleasant for those waiting on the shoreline for the students. Those capable of casting the umbrella charm would find a good use. Those that did not would have to either suffer under the incessant rain that was now accompanied by a howling wind and the chill of almost spring. A pleasant start for some, but not all. Arrived via ship, named the Crusader.
Journey took 3 hours. During this time most of the students were working out or studying.
This was one of the shorter journeys to Hogwarts.
Arrived at 5pm.
This school arrived slightly sooner than Ilvermorny, however due to (cough) *issues* both schools would reach the shore at the same time. Arrived via ship
Journey was two step process: a train ride to Boston (4 hours 45 min); 2 hour layover in Boston where they ate lunch and then boarded the Mistress' Mercy a luxury Diver that gives 30 minutes after they pass The Graves in Hull, Massachusetts (1.5 hours). The dive takes an additional 3 hours and they arrive in the Great Lake. There was excessive show tunes being played
Arrived at 5:10pm.There was certainly a difference between the schools. The obvious flamboyance of Ilvermorny contrasted with the stern, organized nature of the Durmstrang students. In the now pouring rain, a backdrop of brilliant fireworks both Ilvermorny and Durmstrang have arrived.MahoutokoroThe third, final ship would emerge from the water as the rowboats from Durmstrang and Ilvermorny met the shore. Smaller than the other two ships, but more ornate in appearance than either of the other ships. The presence of the late-comer would capsize the lingering ships in the lake or send a few unfortunate students tumbling a second time. However, most of the students from both the Crusader and Mistress' Mercy would have reached the shore by the time this third and final ship arrived at 5:45pm.
The students were quiet, neat and proficient. They would not be faced with the waves but they would endure the rain. The main difference between them and the other schools was the fact that their rowboats had a tarp. They would arrive on the shore dry, unlike the other two schools.
The students were attired with parkas in the color of their wizarding robes.
They did not have their luggage with them, unlike the other two schools. No, their luggage would remain on the ship and be moved during the welcome feast to their temporary quarters (the campgrounds).Arrived at 5:45pm
They would leave Iwo Jima at 1:00.
They would purposefully wait until the other vessels emerged before they did so, adding some time to their journey.
They have been instructed during this journey to appear quiet and not intimidating by their Professors. They should be underestimated, the Professors would not give the students a reason why. Only that soon they would have to "fight", making them perhaps more mentally prepared than others.Notes: you are not required to capsize. You are not required to say you had a hard time rowing, this is merely a roleplay opportunity to give you something to talk about and to address initial rivalries.

He had been stuck in that god-forsaken boat for Merlin knows how long, wearing his dorky school uniform, complete with the equally stupid coat the school provided to protect the students from the crisp Winter air. He tried to pass the time by reading a novel, but his presence was distracting him. Despite however their conversation in February had ended, the mere sight of Arjan filled him with a special rage that seemed to be preserved just for the older student. Every few minutes, Felix would feel the need to glance up at his book to glare in his direction.
Why did he have to come to Hogwarts? Why couldn't Felix just have a nice trip without him? It was maddening, but he endured it. It all had a purpose, after all, he was going to see Ret again and even Arjan wasn't going to stop him. He had to keep reminding himself that it was just for a few hours, that he would see his American sunflower soon enough.
When they had finally surfaced on top of the Great Lake, relief rushed through him. He scurried towards the rowboats, eager to escape the Crusader as quickly as possible--erm, as quickly as he could with the damn orderly fashion the adults felt the need to enforce. It was so annoying; couldn't they see he was in a hurry? As the rowboats bobbed on top of the water's surface, Felix was finally loaded into one along with his luggage. If the professors would allow, he would choose to battle the water's surface on his own. He wasn't in terrible shape, but beads of sweat still formed along his forehead as he attempted to row in the shore's direction.
As the water's surface broke a few dozen feet away from his rowboat, he realized, to his complete horror, that another large ship was surfacing. "WHAT THE FUCK?!" He swore in his native tongue as he tried to hopelessly row faster, away from the cursed boat that dared to make his shitty day that much shittier. There was also a newfound fear rising within him. Namely, that he was not a strong swimmer. The only time he wanted to be submerged in water and vulnerable to whatever the hell was within it was when he showered or bathed. Shit, oh shit. He felt his world tilting as his vessel was flipped upside down, spilling both his body and luggage into the icy waters.
A panicked scream gripped his throat as he flailed his body, attempting to propel himself upwards and away from the depths of whatever the hell lurked within the lake's dark waters. His heavy coat provided no help in the floatation department either, if anything it weighed him down, as did his leather backpack.
Through the odd jig his body did beneath the water's surface, he felt something bump against him and he desperately clawed at the object, pulling himself upwards. "HELP!" He wheezed, coughing up water as he held onto the rim of the other boat for dear life and desperately tried to clamber aboard, perhaps rocking the boat a bit too much. He didn't fail to recognize the face of the cause of his usual torment, but he had never been so relieved to see Arjan's stupidly handsome face in his life, as well as whomever the chump was he rode the boat with, a friend he had seen him hanging around before.

Among those shuttled from Iwa Jima to the ever familiar Scotland was a young man that stood out from the rest. A bit too tall, he had grown another inch since he left Hogwarts a few months earlier in the wake of his cousin's death and his forcible removal. He had a single objective: to return. His cousin had been sent off to Beauxbatons, a civilized school with a familiar culture and a language that at the very least shared characters with his native English.
These months have been hard. He did not know their tongue but spells were universal. Those words did not translate from one people to another, so he worked on what made him proficient. He was a fastidious, bookish, quiet student that never spoke unless it was to incant. It was rumored by some he was a mute, the convenient forfeiture of the memory that he could cast anything that his peers could with the same skill and terrifying ease. He never took a woman, or man. Oddly enough he actually preferred the screeching woman he left in Scotland. Writing was too difficult, it stirred something in him that he did not wish to awaken. It was also dangerous, having connections or someone of value. Merlin, he wished he had never met Winnie Harper.
He was not wearing his school robes, the robes that many of his peers wore with great pride. He considered them a liability, a means by which he could be judged. He had navy robes, but lacked the respect that would come with it. He was alien to most of the students, including those who shared a living space with him. He was quiet, often reading. He was not particularly friendly and often ignored his peers. He was considered "stubborn", "standoffish", "serious" and an utter bore.
That would be an enduring reputation here as he kept his folded navy robe with his luggage and took with him only a small satchel that was slung over his shoulder. He was thinner than some might have recalled, his mop of red hair deflated. His pale skin even whiter since he had last departed. His expression was harder than some might recall, not that he was ever known to be kind. His hazel eyes had the sort of gaze that told his truth - that he killed a man and he would be willing to kill more.
He would climb onto one of the first rowboats meant to be lowered into the great lake. It should have held several others but his would not. As soon as he parted the deck and sat in the boat he would brandish his wand and mutter a single word -- Incendio. Yes, he burnt away at his own ropes. Excitement perhaps, only his action to hasten his arrival would be evidence of his as his face remained stone-like and his voice low, almost uninterested. A part of his perennial lie. The rope thin, it would groan and it would not last long. Incendio once more.
The rear would break before the front, yet the front would beak when the full burden of the ship was upon the rope. It would be by the grace of Merlin that he did not land in the chilled waters beneath a capsized boat. The water from the lake would spray but it would be of minimal consequence, the pouring rains pelted his frame as he affixed his mask and adjusted his cloak.
Row...
There were others left floundering in the waters that he simply rowed past. If someone tried to climb into his otherwise empty ship he would swat at them with his ore. This was a single passenger vessel. [One person can claim I swatted them with an ore.]
He would arrive on shore, leaving his abandoned rowboat overturned, bobbing in shallow waters. Trudging through those last inches of water he would look for someone.
Some stories should never be told...

The school was getting congested with all of the foreign students. Not that this was the first time they had arrived for a ball or other gathering, just the first time she would recall this fanfare. She would witness the arrival of the students from the Koldovstoretz Conservatory, then Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Neither were particularly interesting to her. They looked like prettier versions of her present peers. She expected no different when the herald cried out that the final three schools were scheduled to arrive.
Only they did not arrive synchronously. First would be Durmstrang, then Ilvermorny, and then finally Mahoutokoro. Over a short span of time, their visitors more than doubled. The late-comers did what hey did on purpose, from one asshole to another she knew precisely what they were doing. The fireworks however were unexpected. Bright flashes of red, white, and blue. They were loud, too loud. The air took on the scent of gunpowder.
The heavens opened up and there was a downpour. One umbrella charm later, she would be protected from the showers as she watched the show with mild interest. She expected a rather dull interaction, what would any of them have in common with their obviously superior school? They all traveled TO Hogwarts, not the other way around and this was not the first time they made the journey and by the looks of things unlikely the last. She would cross her arms over her chest and watch the peacocking.
Just a trick of the lighting they said...

Mathias Pride owed her an explanation, especially since Winnie had not heard from him since the howler she had received on Valentine's day, and the experience had left her with more questions than she had before, especially with the possible code she had discovered, though she was less confident that it was actually a code and not some sort of error, considering Matt had also ignored the coded owl she had sent him back.
So she had to focus on what she did know, and that was Mathias had sent Levi a seemingly romantic howler. She had questioned the Gryffindor, demanding to know if the two were back together, but he had denied it. Lying was easy enough for Levi, so she found it difficult to trust his word. It was possible the boy with the silver tongue had somehow tricked Matt into dating him again, and she needed to protect Matt.
So, she had spent weeks watching the boy, only to discover his behaviour a bit... odd. Frolicking, crafting flower crowns, playing the guitar, it was as if the Gryffindor had somehow become Winnie's ideal match. It made no sense... Really she had no choice but to accept his invitation to the ball so she could decipher everything.
She also knew was that he had said he was attending another school and that she would see him soon, even Winnie could put two and two together and figured out he would be visiting Hogwarts with his new school. Where he was currently attending school was another mystery, so she had waited for him during each school's arrival, only to be disappointed and move to the next arrival location.
So, she stood waiting once more. An umbrella charm sheltered her from the pelting raindrops, and a parka shielded her from the late winter's chill. She wore a simple pink dress beneath it and rain boots to protect her feet. All three articles of clothing were pink in colour, of course. The girl wore pink as if no other colour existed. Her hip-length hair had been loosely plaited into two sections. Mathias would likely see her from a mile away.
Mathias' mop of red hair wasn't easy to miss as the boat he rowed drew closer to the shoreline, although presumably while still further away the ginger boy slid a mask overtop his head so she couldn't be 100% certain it was him. Really the action only caused a fire to stir within her. How dare the redhead hide his face! She needed to know if it was Matt or if it was some other guy! How could he! There was truly only one course of action.
Was she about to cause a scene?
Yes, yes she was.
With one hand gripping her wand, and the other balled into a fist, Winnie stormed towards the masked boy's direction. Her eyes were narrowed, although her attempt at a menacing glare was perhaps cancelled out with the way her cheeks puffed up as she huffed. "MATHIAS GERALD PRIDE. Take off that damn mask! If you're breaking up with me you should at least have the guts to say it to my FACE." To say it was going to be awkward if this boy turned out not to be Mathias was an understatement.

Mahoutokoro
Chikao yawned as he was instructed to enter the rowboat while to look pristine as possible during his school's arrival at Hogwarts. Despite spending the majority of the journey asleep or being disciplined by his navy-robed senpais, Chikao was full of energy to begin the long-awaited journey. Being the last to enter the rowboat, Chikao pushed against the main ship with his foot to begin their movement. If his foot left any marks on the ship, he'd be hearing about it for the rest of his time at Hogwarts.
Adjusting himself and picking up an oar, Chikao was about to start rowing till he remembered the words of his Professors. He was to be quiet and not be intimidating in any way. A sign that Chikao wasn't to show off in any capacity. Even though he hated following rules, Chikao was willing to follow his higher-up's words. After all, Chikao's greatest strength was his own strength. If he had to hide that, then that meant no rowing from him. Tossing the oar off into blackened night waters, Chikao stretched his arms and laid down within the boat. He already spent the majority of the day napping and storing energy, might as well spend the entire day doing exactly what he started with.
Looking above at the ceiling of the tent, Chikao sighed in disappointment in not getting to see the stars that glisten. He began to wonder what he was to do at Hogwarts. Was he supposed to fight, as his Professors said? Or was he to just be a fool of distraction? To be seen as someone you would underestimate was already what Chikao was. Even the students at Mahoutokoro underestimated him due to his foreign appearance and lavender-colored robes. He began to wonder how he would be if he was still navy blue. If he went back to his original colors, would he still earn the respect of those he lost?
Oh well, a thought for another time he supposed. With the gentle and slow movement of the rowboat now with one less oar, Chikao began to close his eyes and fall into another dream without having acknowledged the other students in the boat.
Chikao is Open to Interactions. If you'd like to say you were in the same rowboat as him, you have my permission. If you'd like to cast a spell or hit him with an oar for having witnessed him toss one out and then begin to take a nap, you have my permission. Wanna kick him off into the waters? You have my permission!

Louca shook his body out as he stood on deck after the Mistress’ Mercy surfaced. Due to the somewhat long train ride, and then the fairly long dive the ship had taken, he had been unable to easily move around for far too long. He had become a bit jittery, anxious to get off the ship and stretch his legs or do something more strenuous.
He pushed his hands through his hair, squinting at rowboats that seemed to have capsized. It seemed that they had not been the only ones to arrive by boat and that they had caused some disruption to what he thought was Durmstrang, or at least the uniforms seemed to be what he would expect someone from a colder climate to wear. It was a bit of a struggle to make out the details though and he didn’t know how all of the schools would be arrived. Pulling at the tie around his neck, he really wished they could be more lax about their appearance, but he knew it was unlikely that he would be allowed to do so especially as they were first arriving at Hogwarts. Best foot forward and all that.
Jumping slightly at the fireworks, Louca grinned as he moved as quickly as possible to get on one of the rowboats, he tried to give instructions but couldn’t successfully convey what he meant, a first it seemed. Usually Louca could easily convey his thoughts and quite nicely too. Looking around as his arms moved the oars, he again noticed several students in the lake. Shrugging, he took a look around, and figured no one would really care and he needed a bit of a workout. Standing up swiftly, Louca debated kicking off his red, blue and white striped converse, but decided they would be fine. He had several other pairs stored in his luggage, and he doubted anyone would throw it overboard.
Jumping off the side of the boat in a cannonball, Louca let out a giant whoop, excited to get some energy out. Hitting the frigid water, Louca popped up, pushing his hair out of his face, and started swimming to shore, wishing he had remembered to take his cloak off, but instead that just added some more drag that he had to combat. It just meant he would expend more of the energy and hopefully be able to chill the rest of the night, though he also really wanted to explore Hogwarts at some point. He was sure he could find some trouble.
Chuckling, Louca shouted out to no one in particular, ”Well this is fun! Can’t think of anything better than a nice swim to kick off a visit to somewhere new.”

Hailey had been looking forward to the arrival at Hogwarts since the Crusader had set off. She had left Durmstrang behind without a second glance back, ready to have new rules to break at a new school, even if she would only be there for a short amount of time.
The rowboat she was in with a few others was bobbing up and down precariously on the waves of the Great Lake. She and the others had been rowing for a few minutes now, and Hailey would be ever so grateful when they finally got to the castle. It wasn't that the rowing was incredibly difficult for the girl, it was just boring. A mindless activity she would have to do for at least a few more minutes before reaching Hogwarts.
Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, another ship rose up out of the waters. The waters were upset by this arrival and a rolling wave rose up above Hailey's rowboat and capsized it. She yelped in surprise as she fell into the freezing water. She sank beneath the waves slowly, too shocked at this sudden turn of events to do much else. When her chest seized up and she realized she couldn't breathe, she pushed her arms back, propelling herself to the surface once more.
Hailey had always been a good swimmer, she had been swimming practically since she could walk. Arms moving in circles keeping her afloat, she saw quite a few of the Durmstrang boats had capsized at the arrival of the Ilvermorny ship. Making a mental note to take revenge on those stupid Americans one way or another, Hailey looked around for a rowboat or something to swim to.
She finally found one that didn't look too occupied and swam towards it with all her might. Hoisting herself into it she gave a quick nod to the students already in the boat. She was shivering despite her leather jacket tightly wrapped around her body. One thing was for sure. Those dumb Ilvermorny students were going to pay for capsizing all those Durmstrang rowboats.

Winnie was if nothing else easy to find. She was like a ginger flamingo awash in a tide of drab, earthy colors. The reason he felt such haste. Not the reason he wore the mask.
Whelp, he hoped to survive. Then his harpy of an... ex? Apparently they broke up at some juncture, likely in the course of the ghosting. She would storm towards the masked young man demanding that he remove his mask but he would not comply. Rather he held his satchel in front of him with a tight grip beneath gloved hands. He did not make eye contact with her, not that it was possible to tell with the mirrored mask he donned. Rather he let his shoulder go limp as he slid the strap of the satchel over his shoulder and wordlessly thrust the bag turned leather package towards the young screeching woman.
The rain would patter against his helmet and waters would run in small rivers over his curved visage. The waters saturated the heavy, high collared cloak he wore but he did not seem to mind. If he did, he did not say a word.
The satchel would be surprisingly heavy as he relinquished the solitary package into either her hands or the fresh mud between them. The true indicator of who he was if she remembered who he was, not who she wanted him to be. He bought things, people, places, things. His family bought people also. Like Vladimir who showered Santario with gifts. Like how he had also. How money buys charm, forgiveness, is a reflection of want, need or even love. It was a transactional sort of relationship that is sometimes romanticized - the way a woman expects flowers, a small gift, chocolates or a man to pay for a date. Traditions that merely reflected the same truth, love and fidelity can be bought.
Contents.
A satchel that was larger on the inside than the outside. Made of soft, buttery white leather with copper clasps. She might realize just then that it was a lady's bag.
The clasp would not open easily. Not to a simple flick of her fingers. No, it required a twist and an alignment, a modicum of concentration. A purposeful trap in fact. an opportunity to flee as the girl was distracted. He was many things, and a coward was among them. He would mutter in an echoing voice, the product of the mask he wore a single word. "Fumos" The smokescreen spell and yes for the very reason one would suppose, to run. Yes, he ran like a goddammed coward but under the veil of a loud of smoke.
If successful Winnie would be left with a leather package and a single word that had nothing to do with her.
If she tried to open the package then and there she would regret it. A massive, yes massive dress would shoot from the opened lid with the force one might experience from a broken button from a pair of skinny jeans after a big meal. A large, pink projectile. A dress? Yead, a dress a family of four might live in. [Link]
A pair of shoes that might bludgeon a nearby curiously onlooker. [Link]
And finally a letter that had all the heart felt emotion one would expect from Winnie's derelict lover.
See you at the Ball.
Some stories should never be told...

back to Hogwarts she went, finally after she regained her sanity. The ball had traumatized her for years to come, and the events after had gotten her nervous. She wasn't sure she were stood with the cooler kids at her school, but she knew where she stood with shimizu and Chikao. You found friends in the strangest places. She straightened her rain coat the color of her robes and stood with her arms behind her back as she waited patiently for their boat to surface.
She walked in the rows of neat and perfect kids. Her eyes wandered left and right, surveying the way her classmates walked. They walked like robots, like they were born to be perfect. And the same. They were all the same. They had to play nice this time round, make people think they would play nice.
Ah. The tournament. She had mixed emotions about it, she wanted to join but she was pretty sure she had no chance of joining the team now. She was pretty sure the nerds hated her now. She thought she would feel good about it, but she just felt a bit left out.
Whatever. Going to the boats, she spotted Chikao. "Chikao! Hey, Chikao!" He was a brave and courageous boy. Nothing bothered him. He used to be a top student, but he bang to slip. Everyone knew about it. But Sana didn't mind. In truth, she admired his and Shamsi's bravery. "I'm sitting with you, if you don't mind." She lowered herself into the boat carefully and smiled sweetly at him in thanks. "Chikao! What are you doing? Come on, I know you're lazy,,, sometimes,,, but can we please not leave this all on the rest of us? You're strong. Help us. Please." She rowed as she could, glad for the protection that the other students didn't seem to get. At least our school is smart.
