Magical Masquerade: The crafts area
April 13th 2024
Quidditch Training Pitch
4pmIn a quiet area of the quidditch training pitch, a place for the less social people was located. There were tables for people to make arts and crafts on, and of course materials for the projects. You could make a bird house or a flower crown or other such small spring things like that. The trees made small whooshing noises and the decorations had just the right amount of peace and beauty to please all. The effect overall was very peaceful and calming which would help people setle in for the evening of fun.
The small crafts had instructions on how to make them. A jewelry making set had instructions on how to knot the string into a bracelet, earring, or necklace. There was some clay out for pottery making, and there were instructions on how to make it different types of pottery. All in all, it was a very fun event, but it was much quieter than the loudness of the ball or banquet which called to much more introverted people.
The area around the crafting tables is grassy and has some rugs to sit and make crafts out in the sun. There are plenty of shaded spots, especially where the tables are, but the rugs are out nearer to the center of the field, right in the sun where you can feel warm as you make some crafts. There are trees for bird houses to hang on and a large quantity of birds hungry and ready for some yummy food. Plenty of chatter laughter would soon be heard and new friendships will most likely occur, so just relax and enjoy making crafts with friends or take the night to calm down and enjoy crafting.

@Astra Norrick as Elias Travers • @Rebecca Lark as Judas CraneThe last ball had been a disaster for Daniel in terms of making friends.Yeah, he met those two kids making lanterns together [@Harmony Hollins and @Flynn Montgomery] and also that pretty Japanese girl that he stood with by the shore [@Raizel Voltrouz as Miharu Goto] as the seniors saved the people in the lake. Not much happened after that. Daniel went back to Castelobruxo, practiced for Quidditch, and went through his regular life. Mostly Quidditch, though. His aim for quaffle scores were getting much better.
At the mention of a new ball at Hogwarts, Daniel packed his things and went. This time, he hadn't told his parents, just that he wanted to go back to school early from Easter break to practice and study. Why would they believe otherwise? He was their perfect oldest son, after all. Daniel's motive, however, was seeing the Japanese girl (if she showed up, of course) and finding more friends.
At the cabins, he met a few more students nearer to his age. Namely Elias Travers from Ilvermorny and Judas Crane from Beauxbatons. From his memory, they agreed to attend the ball together, so he was here at a quieter part of the Quidditch Stadium waiting for them to show up.
(Daniel wasn't actually sure if he got his point across. Both of them spoke English, although Elias wrote in a little notebook. Daniel didn't think to brush up on his Duolingo English lessons during Easter break. Hopefully he didn't curse them out?)
For now, he looked around the crafts area and spotted the bird houses. He approached them, taking a handful of bird feed, and held his hand out for them to perch and eat on.

Back in Scotland for another fancy event, Elias arranged his tie one final time in the mirror at his temporary quarters. He looked nice. Aunt Paige had bought him the suit at some sort of fancy New York clothing store and had it delivered to Ilvermorny a couple days before departure. He glanced at the coat and mask lying on his bed and then back in the mirror.
Elias had never particularly cared about his appearance. He hated looking slobbish, but he'd never spent this long trying to look good. He'd spent way longer than necessary setting out his clothes, tucking in his shirt, straightening his tie, polishing his shoes, etc.
But the thought of being out on the dance floor again, in such a beautiful setting, and with so many beautiful people, prompted him to match the beauty by looking nice himself. And then there was Ruby...
He turned and put on his coat, then slipped the crane mask over his head. It was long and white with little red detailing. Elias liked this sort of red, it looked calmer than the cranberry color of his uniform. Less angry. More dignified.
The tails of his coat fluttered and he turned left and right, trying to see if anything looked off or out of sorts. To his relief, it was all good.
Elias once again turned to his bed. His suitcase lay open, a small fancy bottle and note atop his carefully packed clothes. Elias - Some cologne I thought would suit you. Not too strong, just spray a little on neck, inside elbow, inner wrist. Have fun! - Aunt Paige
Elias popped the silver colored cap off the spray bottle. A hesitant sniff. It smelled like something sort of tropical and sweet at first, mixing with peach and an earthy, flowery scent? It smelled nice. He did as the note instructed, spraying the tiniest amount in each area. The scent was overwhelming at first, especially when he brought his hands near his face, but he supposed he would get used to it.
He then picked up the single red alstromeria from its water cup on the windowsill. With care, the boy dried off the stem and tucked it into his coat pocket. The flower was for Ruby if he ended up seeing her.
Elias took one last look, slipped his notebook and quill into his satchel, and exited his cabin, walking with purpose and excitement.
There were far too many people huddling at the ball entrance, none of which looked like Ruby, but that was alright since that wasn't where he was headed anyway.
Veering away from the crowded space, Elias searched the crafting area for the boys he'd met earlier in the week, Daniel and Judas. Somehow, despite the language barriers of one non-English speaker and one non-hearing person, they'd managed to structure a meet-up.
The eyeholes of Elias' mask were large, easily accommodating his wide gaze as he took in the sights of the craft area. Birdhouses, pottery, paintings, an introverted artist's dream.
Birds! The little animals crowded round a boy, Daniel by the look of it, as he held out birdseed to them. Elias also scooped some and offered it to the creatures, a bright smile shining underneath his mask.
He inched within Daniel's sight line and waved. Hello in BSL was far more understood than hello in ASL, he found, the American motion being almost salute-esque. This had probably been the easiest part of learning BSL, While Elias was no means fluent, he was certainly a lot better after six or so months of practice.

Magical Masquerade: The crafts area
Sage had a vendetta against balls - masquerade balls, in particular, held her ire.
Sure, she understood the appeal of a mystical, magical evening the first time round but now, it felt so unoriginal and overdone - like something recycled out of a waste paper basket.
Besides, events like these were a magnet for theatrics and hazardous hijinks. Sage could still remember that prank Kim played on Sophia during their first ball - that bespelled teacup latched onto her nose like a bug; an indignant Sage could only watch on in horror.
Knowing better now, Sage steered clear of fanciful evenings, preferring the mostly quiet tables of the crafts' corner that ran alongside the main event. Which might explain why she was dressed so plainly; a billowy, blue-striped linen dress with a loose ribbon tied about the waist was worn over a scuffed pair of ankle boots. She hadn't bothered with a mask either.
Comfort was a priority for the 14-year old teen, proving to be just as practical as her mum. The young Gryff sat herself at the jewelry crafts table, running a finger along the grid-containers of string, beads and crystals. She'd never tried jewelry-making before so this ought to be fun, she just had to figure out what to make.

His outfit had been his great grandmother's idea. Or, if not her idea, then at the very least her doing. When he'd owled her his intentions to attend Hogwarts' Spring Ball - as well as his polite request for her to check and see if they had anything in storage that would be suitable for a masquerade - she'd been delighted, and sent him back around half a dozen various options. His favorites by far had been the white feathered mask and corresponding wings, soft and downy to the touch. He couldn't help but wonder if the previous wearer, presumably a family member, had been making tongue-in-cheek reference to their surname, Crane, or if, like him, they'd been aiming for something more angelic in their guise.
He went back in forth in the mirror, adjusting his tie this way and that before opting to forgo it entirely. He was aiming for somewhere between formal and casual, an elegance that looked like he didn't care one way or the other about how it was perceived. The wings were large, and certainly cumbersome, but more than anything they were eye-catching, and he couldn't help but preen at the way the whole look had come together.
He imagined - or maybe just hoped, really - that the wings had been charmed in some way to preserve their coloring, or lack thereof, seeing as they'd almost certainly been in storage for quite some time before making their way into his possession, and yet were still the pure, bright white of the previous season's snow. He'd have to be careful at the dance not to spill anything on himself, or trip and fall into the dirt, or any other myriad of things that could soil them and ruin their who-knows-how-long untarnished streak.
If his grandmother had been hoping he'd use the Ball as an opportunity to practice networking with other notable wixen of his age, she would certainly wind up disappointed. He had plenty of opportunities both back at school and at family events back home to socialize with his peers; this was a party, and one that he'd been allowed to travel abroad for, at that. Rather, he'd already made the acquaintanceship of a boy from Castelobruxo and another from Ilvermorny, where he himself would had attended had his mother and grandmother not emigrated to Belgium before his birth. He was rather keen on the challenge that the three-part language barrier would provide. No better way to broaden your linguistic horizons than throwing yourself bodily to the conversational wolves.
He joined Daniel and Elias at the crafts area, greeting them with a wave. He grinned wolfishly at the two of them and held up the sketchpad he'd nicked from his art supplies just for this occasion, writing deftly across the page with his quill before flipping it over for the two of them to see. Good to see the both of you again.
As Daniel held out his hand full of birdseed, called out a quick "try to hold still if a bird lands on you, Daniel, and I'll do my best to sketch it," before turning to Elias. On the sketchpad he wrote: Would you show me the sign for a bird?

@Astra Norrick as Elias Travers • @Rebecca Lark as Judas CraneDaniel gave Judas a thumbs up before turning to the birds again. Hold still? He wasn't holding anything but bird feed. Was that another way to say freeze? Don't move? The crafts area was still fairly quiet, only one other person joining the trio in the space. One of the birds began plucking at the feather on Daniel's mask. He was quick to dodge and took it off, hiding the feather with one hand while pointing at another saying, "Don't ruin it."
The flash of red sparks [@Theo Vendeberg] from the outskirts of the training pitch greatly disturbed Daniel's peace as he jumped. The birds were also quick to scare as they flew all over, some retreating to the bird houses and others swarming him. Daniel waved his arms, trying to get the birds off, and stepped back just in time for poop to land a few centimetres away from his shoe. A close call.
Daniel checked the rest of his attire for any poop. "What happen?" He asked. At the last ball, red sparks had gone off because kids fell into the lake and needed help. Was there already chaos now? Or was it simply a marker that the ball had begun?
Putting the mask back on and readjusting the straps, Daniel asked, "Have your guys seen the ball?"

The three boys were all here now. They were quite a sight, a sparkly blue kid and a crane boy and a pristine white angel gathered round each other in relative quietness.
Elias signed You too with a smile beneath his mask. A bird landed upon Elias' hand, likely cheeping or tweeting or squawking at him in between consumption of seed. Another smaller avian joined his friend.
Judas' written message caught his eye. Bird was an easy one, the same in BSL and ASL. Elias placed his free hand on the side of his face with only his index and thumb extended, then pinched them together several times like a bird beak opening and closing.
There was a sudden disturbance in the air. The birds feeding from Elias' hand were no longer there, the small gusts of their takeoff tickling his hand. Elias looked between Daniel and Judas and then behind him to catch a glimpse of red fireworks.
Isn't there a spell for red fireworks? Elias was not very good at spells. He remembered Wizard 911 though. At least, sort of. Red fireworks were familiar. He glanced back to the other two, concerned. Red fireworks means help, yes? Or could it be part of the ball? There had been red fireworks at last ball, too.
Shoot. I need to write that. He extracted the notebook and quill from his satchel with more clumsiness than usual in his haste. Do you think that's part of the event or a call for help? There were fireworks last time, too.
Daniel did not seem too worried, but he was also asking questions. Elias could not lip read him well as he adjusted his mask, and so looked at Judas for any sort of clue as to what was going on.

Magical Masquerade: The crafts area
date: 13/04/2024 location: training pitch, crafts areaDespite showing no emotions on his face, Ekachot could feel the day's happenings lingering heavy on his heart. Everything was a mess, he felt like a mess, unable to help anybody. He had stood frozen, seeing his only friend cry and scream. He had never seen blood this prolifically before. He just wanted to return home, to seek some comfort, to forget what he had seen but the scenes were already imprinted in his mind. He wanted to cry and scream but found himself unable to do so.
Suddenly, realization hit him hard. He was still standing at the entrance, looking at the scene that had unfolded infront of them, and Elisa was still sobbing. Elisa, must have been traumatized too.
Without saying a word, Ekachot held Elisa's hand and pulled her towards the craft area. Ekachot thought of Elisa as his own sister, even though they had met not so long ago. Entering the craft area, Ekachot hoped there would be nothing going wrong anymore. He hoped that his decision would actually help Elisa, and himself, calm down.
The young boy saw some people already busy making small crafts, peacefully. Crafting was not Ekachot's thing. He found it rather kiddish. Pottery, jewelry, bird houses...What could he even do with any of that?
But being mentally exhausted, he could not help but engage himself in making a bird house, trying to decipher the instructions scribed on the instruction card while waiting for Elisa to speak up.
