Rosy-hued blossoms nestled within the tendrils of her hair, carefully pinned to ensure they'd last the evening. As she walked towards her destination her gown cascaded behind her like a waterfall of pink rose petals. A matching mask concealed the features of her upper face. Her heels were delicate and decorated with pink roses, but they defiantly sunk into the grass of the Quidditch pitch, the subtle protest was enough to shatter her rose-tinted illusion of a fairytale event. Then again, on the cusp of her sixteenth year she was foolish enough to believe she had shed her tendency to romanticize the world around her--

She sunk into the ground once again. Merlin, she was tempted to break the heel right off of the damn shoe.

It was with determination that she made her way towards the night's destination. How many balls had she attended by now? She had lost count, because the most important element of attending balls was having a lovely evening with her boyfriend. Mathias had been the perfect gentleman, as far as Winnie could remember. He had remained the one constant in her life for the past three years.

Her eyes scanned the surrounding area as she entered and tugged her heel out of the ground once more. The sight of people digging filled her with unease... These balls never seemed to end well for some reason or another, Merlin only knew what the committee was up to.

Peeling her eyes away from the scene, she once again swept her gaze over the crowd. She saw her lifelong friend, "Jack!" She went to raise her hand to grab his attention, but quickly noticed he was with someone. Her posture quickly deflated as her arm dropped to her side. It seemed like Jack had time for a lot of girls these days... She missed him, but wasn't going to interrupt. The lump in her throat was a silent reminder of the distance that had grown between them these last few years.

Amidst the crowd Mathias stood out like a ghostly apparition, a modern-day prince in a sea of students who were adorned clothing so lavish it was like they thought they were the main character of a fantasy romance novel. His choice in attire was... Questionable. It looked like he was getting ready to go for a run for the first time in his life rather than attend a formal ball. Had he forgotten to acquire robes? Was he attempting defy his pureblood roots? Was it a chivalrous attempt to allow his girlfriend to shine?

She didn't have much time to speculate, because she was watching her beloved Mathias lean in for a kiss with a red-haired stranger adorned in pink. A chill washed through her veins as the colour drained from her face.

"M-Mattie?" She stammered, her voice trembled in the heat of her heartbreak. It took only a moment for the fire shimmering within to burst, and fueled by the searing pain of betrayal the torrent of emotions was unleashed in a roar, "MATHIAS PRIDE!" Her white-knuckled grip grabbed the hem of her gown as she stormed over to him, chunks of earth flying up behind her as her heels dug into the muck.

𝓣he ugly screeching of another howler confirmed for Bex that she had most certainly not found the clue this round, either. Which was rather frustrating, not so much that she hadn't been the one to find it, but rather that the object in question was a clue again, and not the so hotly sought after key. Aren't these things supposed to come in threes? She'd added to her ever-growing Ball Crawl memorabilia collection, though, so the night hadn't been a total loss. She found herself richer in the sum total of one pretty feather, soft to the touch and the same soft gray of an overcast afternoon, a foreign coin, one she was unfamiliar with and had likely been dropped by one of their international visitors, and, of course, a cluster of flowers picked haphazardly off the pearlbush.

She was running out of steam by this point. While Pear's warning about the bees did little to dissuade her - having spent more time outside than inside in her twelve years of life, Bex had been stung by her fair share of bees and was confident she could take 'em, in fact if people were assigned stat points like video game characters she was sure she'd have a much higher strength score than those little guys - boredom was, however, a far more successful motivator. She'd run out of room in her pocket for her little bush artifacts, and the clues were Never. Going. To. End.

She made her way out of the pearlbush, wiping the dirt off her hands as best as she could as she re-joined Aly and Pericles in civilized society. "That's okay, Aly, I'm starting to think that the key was some kind of sick joke. Maybe they're trying to distract us from how evil it is to not play Quidditch on a Quidditch Pitch. I guess it kind of worked. I'll let the others search the lilies, my pockets are full."

While she'd been on her floral expedition, a new girl had joined their little entourage, a lovely but formidable looking redhead who she guessed was around Pericles and Aly's age. Both Pericles and Aly were looking at her rather intently, so Bex could only assume that she was a very good friend of theirs, or, if not, then perhaps someone terribly important. As such, she took a moment to assess the newcomer, who was apparently named Evelynn, listening as she and Aly made introductions. Not a friend, then, though Aly seemed to very much want her to be. Bex would endeavor to make a good impression on the grey-eyed girl.

Aly was right that the gold looked nice on Evelynn; the dress looked like something out of a children's storybook, and Bex liked the bodice and the poofy sleeves. It wasn't something that she herself would ever like to wear, but she liked the visible texture of it, and how the girl carried herself from within it: graceful and poised, every movement having a sort of measured quality to it. She looked a lot like an especially fancy snitch, which Bex implicitly approved of. Looking at the other two in their little group, though, with Aly's dress an homage to the heavens and Pericles' reminiscent of the moon in both attire and just general appearance, Bex couldn't help but wonder if there had been some sort of planning in advance, and if Evelynn was meant to be the sun.

Once again, proper rude that no one had thought to tell her that there was a astronomical theme to the night's proceedings. Though she supposed her chosen costume did make a sort of sense in its own way. Moths were attracted to the light, after all, and she found it hard to believe that any of the myriad of other ball goers, whether they be Hogwarts students or visiting international peers, could be half as bright as the three celestial bodies she'd somehow found herself amongst.

Evelynn had brought a weird energy with her that Bex both couldn't and wouldn't care to parse. Blind to the perhaps life-altering moment happening in front of her, Bex was more than happy to interject and introduce herself to the sun-snitch newcomer. There was a delicate tension to the group like an acrobat poised on a high wire, and twelve-year-old tact-incarnate Rebecca was an especially intrusive confetti cannon. "Hullo. Aly said your name is Evelynn? I like your mask, it reminds me of a carousel. Did you all plan your outfits to match?"

His family has a saying: "I saw it coming." Almost a mantra, more an ironic truth. A family of Seers, nothing should be a secret nor a surprise yet every last one of them seemed to be astonished and bewildered when he died. When he had made a secret pact with crones in his foolish youth. When he became their dark errand boy. He was not astonished to learn that his aunt was unfaithful or the fact that her husband was aware and did not care. He was not astonished to learn that his cousins and half-brothers loathed him, wished him dead and followed his demands out of a sense of duty rather than fidelity. That there were criminal elements to what was otherwise portrayed as legitimate business. But he also knew that there were secrets being withheld from him. Occasional slips of the mind when he was near, evidence that they knew more than they let on. The implication that they let him die. That they let him make those deals, to lead his friends to their deaths.

Yet doubt undermined this logical conclusion. They could not have known. There was no benefit to the madness he had inflicted, the pain that he had endured or the death he had experienced. It was bad luck that such terrible things transpired just as it was good luck that he was able to be pulled back from the claws of death. Despite their at times contentious relationship, they were family and wanted the best for one another.

Just luck -- a childish lie he would tell himself like a mantra time and time again. It soothed the burn but it did not extinguish the simmering paranoia just beneath the surface. He had since his apparent resurrection, returned to Hogwarts and sought answers to the burning questions he still had.

How was it that they did not know?

What did she mean when she said that Opeila and Dealla had twins?

What did she mean that the collection was nearly complete?

Had he gone mad? She was dead. He regretted it strangely, not that a scrap of her would be recovered. Vengeance seemed more fulfilling in concept than in practice. Even with that bitch dead, there was a hollowness that could not be filled with blood or bone.

Amidst the revelry and laughter of what promised to be a bustling party once the key was found, children and teens in their finery were clawing in the mud. Vladimir would not participate, if he knew that the final piece Marion spoke of was buried in that mud he would have clawed at the earth like an animal. However, as a solitary figure, Vladimir stood out like a macabre harbinger. His tall, slender frame was draped in a tailored suit, impeccable in its cut and fabric. Yet, beneath that facade of sophistication, a sinister aura emanated from him like a cold breeze.

Athanatos' piercing gaze moved restlessly across the crowd, observing every intricate detail with an almost predatory intensity. He had chosen solitude these past months, a self-imposed exile born of a concoction of fear, shame, and gnawing regret. But the echoes of the crone's dark whispers invade his dreams and the terrible words she claimed had lured him back into society's embrace, a cruel temptress beckoning him to face his tormented past.

As he scanned the faces around him, a familiar pang of isolation washed over him. They were strangers, their laughter and conversations a foreign language he could no longer comprehend. He felt like an outsider, a ghost haunting the halls of his own life.

The Ravenclaw's mind raced, a cacophony of thoughts and memories mingling in a dizzying vortex. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched, that every movement he made was under the scrutiny of unseen eyes. The crone's whispers had made a terrifying prophecy that was thus far undeserved, for now, those words only served to heighten his apprehension.

He longed to reach out, to shatter the oppressive silence that surrounded him. Yet, every attempt to engage in conversation ended in stilted exchanges and awkward pauses. The weight of his past transgressions lay heavily upon his heart, an invisible barrier that separated him from the carefree revelers around him.

Vlad knew he couldn't continue this charade. He had to confront his demons, to unravel the secrets that haunted him. And so, with each step he took through the crowded ballroom, he felt a twisted sense of both dread and anticipation. But whether salvation or damnation awaited him at the end of this perilous journey, only time would tell.

Of all the ways Fate could have twisted her strings and woven the future, she simply had to splurge on the Black Thread of Misfortune in Astra's tapestry.

The child, having no interest in balls after that horrid first one, and consequently not knowing where this one was held, had decided to banish her rising anxieties with fly time. It was the one thing that truly erased all worries from her mind, and believe you me, tonight she was swimming in them.

Firstly, her brother, who seemed to learn the lesson of "Danger: Steer Clear" worse than she. Second, her cousins @Alyssea Brown and @Raizel Voltrouz, both of whom had experienced the terror of Fall Ball and decided to come anyway. Astra refused to let the Vault sneak out a verse of the monotonous, continuous song of self-pity that played as background in her hopeless heart, the song of weakness and failure she'd been trying so hard to keep quiet these past months.

But, I digress. Third among her concerns were her friends (such as the dashing @Mahlioz Evethisawe, who she knew to be in attendance, and the elusive @Renelle Dalton, whose whereabouts remained unclear) and positive acquaintances such as @Siobhan McCarty, @Reginald Drake, and @Rebecca Lark.

As one could imagine, her insides were twisted and pulled into knots, her heart was all aflutter and her head pounded with those dratted imaginings and musings she so tended to have.

Hermes, a lazy lad this day, made a noise of questioning as Astra gathered her flying gears, patted him on the head, and got affirmation from her roommate NPC that she'd keep him in her sights. And then the snaklet was off.

To the broomshed she'd trek, finding Felix, her favorite school broom, and giving him a once-over. Deemed ready and humming with excitement, the broom was tucked under one arm and she practically ran to the Quidditch Training Pitch, the static in her brain growing louder with every step.

Felix nearly slipped to the grassy ground as Astra's hands flew up to cover her scream. Blue eyes widened impossibly with shock and fear. Oh God.

She was on the outskirts of the exact cursed event she'd been trying to avoid.

Aly "could make friends with a brick wall" Salinger, charmer that she was, made conversation easy. She followed the socialite footwork like a trained dancer: her knack for knowing what to say, putting her partner at ease. Being dressed as the stars was fitting for her, seeing the way she drew others into her orbit. Even a young ice prince like Pericles wasn't immune. He was charmed through-and-through by her grandmother's dress, her mention of floriography, and the way she solved the riddle in the backdrop with only a moment's contemplation (a tribute to their House). While the moon said little, he hung on her every word, exuding the soft glow of admiration. It felt nice to forget his worries, letting himself be lured to the point of distraction.

He would find himself unable to ignore the gnawing sense of being watched. Caution was disguised as casualness, a few nonchalant glances sweeping their surroundings, only to freeze when they met a pair of gray eyes. Finding them fixed his way through the crowd brought back a memory: that same gaze standing out against the forest's black backdrop. He suddenly recalled he hadn't repaired the coat with her claw marks in it. Eve said something when she arrived, a clever play on his theme, a line of prose which the young heir would have typically been thrilled to bat back in a round of repartee. Instead he tilted his head down, considering her from the other side of fabric designed to make the mask holes look like they were holding a galaxy instead of a person. She wouldn't see his wide eyes or arched eyebrows, only the pensive frown he wore when wondering. He couldn't remember when he'd become so tall, or when she'd become so pretty. The realization had almost gotten through to him the night of her animagus ritual, when he'd seen her dressed as the embodiment of the storm. She was praising Aly and him effortlessly, but he couldn't think of how to respond. What was he supposed to say? She didn't want him to call her Eve, or at least, calling him by a nickname had been deemed too familiar. The few lines that came to mind would have been outright audacious. Unable to recall the basic steps to this social waltz, the young man could only stare vacantly. In the end, Pericles made an attempt, yet only managed to say rather stupidly: "You look nice." He wasn't sure why, but immediately after saying so, he wanted to turn into a bird and divebomb into the lake.

All three said something about their auspicious match, though his only contribution at first was a few mystified nods. Being tongue-tied wasn't a natural state for Pericles. He was grateful for the vibe confetti canon that was Bex, being a blessed distraction with clusters of treasure in her hands and pockets. "A happy coincidence, believe it or not," he (finally) replied. That was when Winnie's enraged bellowing brought his attention back to the ball at large. With his mouth crimped into a telltale grimace, Peri traced her trajectory to the target, only to be doubly distracted when a corpse-pale face passed by. Vladimir Athanatos, the Ravenclaw who had been declared dead in the newspaper only to return to school without an explanation. Peri's thoughts cleared and sensibilities returned. As if a switch had been flipped, he was grounded again, rolling his shoulders in anticipation. "Bit early in the event for all this," the moon mused, "we haven't even made it to the refreshments yet." He gave a tactfully subtle gesture towards Vlad with a lift of his chin. To fellow fifth-years, he wouldn't have to spell out that this particular person was shady as shit. "Look lively, ladies. Bex?" He hadn't forgotten their last encounter on the Quidditch pitch, namely her dejection. "You weren't planning to go looking for anyone else, were you? You ought to 'hang' with us." In other words, he was hoping she'd stick close to the protective wall of fifth-years. Pericles had the sneaking suspicion that no one had informed her the balls involved less dancing, more surviving magical warzones.

Uri had been at the ball for only a few moments but the only conclusion he could really draw was that events here unfolded at a breakneck pace. It seemed certain, from the snippets of conversation that he could hear unfolding around him, that it was definitely some sort of dig site where the people were searching for the key to get into the ball. His mind immediately went back to the Indiana Jones movies he'd watched with his dad a few months ago. He smiled to himself at the memory of, 'only a penitent man may pass.' He was also just plain entertained by the irony of people dressed to the nines digging around in the dirt. While he was in his reverie, a boy in an elaborate paper (but nonetheless very well constructed) mask and a white suit which was the yin to his yang walked up to him and seemed to imply that all eyes were on him. He was used to being the center of attention at times and knew that he certainly was not in this instance. He watched the boy walk off and settle next to another student and start digging.

He was about to walk over to them and try to strike up a conversation when something happened that most certainly ensured the attention was off him. First, a boy a few years older than him walked in who looked - well, at least compared to all the other guests - severely underdressed. He was dressed like the guys in the Sopranos. Seriously, who wears a tracksuit to a masquerade ball? He watched the boy walk over to a girl in a pink dress with long red hair and lean in to kiss her. Then it got very interesting indeed as another girl in a pink dress with long red hair appeared to be in shock at this, but evidently it was only for a moment because in the next moment he, everyone else at the ball, and no doubt some of the houses in Hogsmede learned that this boy was evidently named Matthias Pride, as the enraged redhead made a beeline for him. Better him than me, Uri thought to himself as he quietly made his way over to where the boy had gone.

The stylishly dressed boy had walked over to a girl with flowing brown locks in a blue dress he doubted he'd be comfortable in even if he was a girl. Well, this was the awkward part for him. He could talk to someone he knew for hours on end and be engaged and not awkward at all. For Uri the problem wasn't the conversation, it was the first few words he needed to start the conversation. There was nothing for it, he just had to try and dive in. Trying to think of a conversation starter and he finally came up it, "Why are you two digging around in such stylish threads?"

"Hmm, I don't know. Maybe to make a difference, when we enter there, all the students will start flying with magic. What happened at the Autumn Ball?"
I chuckled, flying around would be fun but I couldn't help but feel that it wasn't it. Perhaps it was all the people around me wearing masks or maybe I'd just watched too many crime shows but I couldn't help but feel that something peculiar was about to happen at this Masquerade. I brushed the feeling off though and tried to focus on getting the key for the door and chatting with Victoria.
"Well, last time lots of people nearly drowned and yeah, that's all I can remember" I said slowly trying to recall what happened. My memories of that night were a little fuzzy.
"So, do you have any pets? You seem like someone who loves animals." she continued.
"Sadly no, I don't have any pets but I'm thinking about getting an owl next year." I added brightly.

My hand accidentally touched something hard and solid. I saw in Victoria's hand a small wooden box.
"Bingo. I didn't think it would be this easy."
Me neither, but I didn't say that out loud. Inside was a piece of parchment and some sweets. No key.
It was yet another clue.
Blood of a goddess,
Turned its petals red
Tears made her a mess,
Her lover now dead.'
"Well this clue sounds thrilling, doesn't it." I said sarcastically after reading it. To be honest I have no idea what this riddle mean.
"Could be a rose right? It's red." I suggested.

“If I plan to spike the punch, I’ll let you know,” Kaito chuckled as he inspected the roots of the flower bush. Like he thought before, there wasn’t really anything around that he and Pyxis could use to make the evening more fun via the punch bowl, but the thought of having some control over that was gratifying. “Yeah, I don’t think a couple of first years are equipped to turn this whole ball thing on its head,” he continued, bringing them both back down to earth. “More likely, we’ll have to rave dance to a slow song to get our fun.”

The thought of them banging their heads to a song called The Ballad of Merlin or whatever was embarrassing enough, but he didn’t mind making a fool of himself as long as he had a partner. And Pyxis was an easy first choice. It wasn’t like he got to know anyone else over the course of the year. In fact, he believed that he and Pyxis could relate quite deeply to each other, but the Slytherin already seemed uncomfortable about the thought of loneliness, so he didn’t mention that. “Exactly, though. I mean, I don’t mind the dirt so that part doesn’t really bother me. I’m just excited to hear that these things are going to be different every time. Seriously, imagine how many we're going to attend in our entire school career. We’ve got twelve left!”

Still, the thought of his peers almost drowning was a terrifying image. Completely new to the school and to balls of this sort, he paid further note to neither the disgruntled lover who shrieked her way through the bushes nor the tall student who stalked down the pathway in isolation, despite eyeing their entrances. Whatever dangers lurked that would or would not burst forth from the ground tonight, Kaito remained blissfully unaware. The knowledge that set up of the last ball posed a danger to the student body only told him to stay away from the Great Lake where freak accidents were a normal occurrence. Surely, he did not expect anything like that at this ball.

The last clue revealed itself in the hands of someone that was not him, so he pursed his lips in disappointment and stood up. He met Pyxis’ eyes with mirrored confusion, unsure of what a Fleur-de-lis was and what Florence had to do with anything. He couldn’t even dream of having the wealth to visit Italy. That sort of thing was just unfeasible for the Foxglove pair.

Many students started moving then, over to plants that looked like lilies. They were much smarter than him, it seemed. A younger version of himself would be disappointed by that fact, but the Gryffindor had totally let himself go during his first year, so he really had no right feeling surprised that he was out of his depth. Or perhaps, the students of the French school were leading the charge for this one and his self-pity had reached an all time high.

Pyxis walked towards a bush with confidence, nudging a girl who was standing nearby wearing… jeans? He followed the Slytherin quickly, getting a better look at her face. Ah, it was Cranky. Somehow, he wasn’t surprised by her choice of attire. It was obvious that she didn’t want to be here. He wondered where the other girl was… Ursula was her name. Would she be here tonight? He did still have some choice words over her practically smashing his toe with her trunk. “Rad fit,” he said to Cranky, walking backwards to the spot that Pyxis picked. “And you too, Golden Girl.” He only recognized the sparkly girl from his classes, but her name escaped him. Unsurprising seeing as he was already asleep by the time roll call happened.

He twirled, stooping at a red lily bush near to Pyxis’ after listening to his instruction. “Either you’re really informed about flowers, or you’ve got a really good ear.”

MODERATION !
Rolling a d100 for everyone searching the correct place. For people not searching anywhere specifically, they get a -10. For anybody having keen eye, 10 is added to the roll. The correct answer for the last clue was Iris. (Everybody searched for lilies). When I wrote this clue, I had irises on my mind. Seeing everyone searching lilies, I searched the thing up and it's quite disputed. I'm no French OOC to actually argue over the thing. But Irises resembles the symbol more.

As the last clue was announced, excitement filled the air. People started searching. @Zach Zaphiere searched, but for his wand among the bushes, and soon found his 'other half'. The air was indeed filled with pollens, and whoever might suffer from the pollen allergy should definitely thank Valentin Schnell (@Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood
) who casted the atmosphere spell making a soft light breeze flow over the area which helped steer of the pollen away. Most of the people thought, the clue was leading to the bushes of Lily. But they were quite wrong to think that, the clue meant irises, or whoever made the clue meant that. Professor Sereia Clairmont was the only one who got near enough the clue. Luckily, their saviour, Brookline Quinn was able to find the key, wrapped up in another parchment. As soon as they key was held, the parchment, yet another howler, bellowed,
Welcome to all! The games are now over. You have finally found the key to the mystical, magical Masquerade. The spring ball. Let the feast now begin!
With this said, the enchanted key flew from near the bushes straight to the large wooden doors, and fit itself in the keyhole rotating, as the doors to the ball finally flew open.

• All normal h.io rules are to be followed.
Thankyou for reading! I hope you have fun.

Basil smiled.
"Your always my princess, no matter what outfift I wear." Basil said, happy she liked his outfit.
"I based it off a muggle prince. My mum made me watch this one movie called beauty sleeping or something." Basil added, wanting her to know. Basil felt his face burn. The girl, Alice, was being very rude.
"I-I didn't choose my name!" Basil stammered. The girl apologized but he couldn't get her words out of his head. The girl was quiet for a little while and Basil just enjoyed holding Devon's hand. He plucked a flower and presented it to her.
"It's not quiet a pearl but..." He trailed off. Alice spoke again. Basil felt himself go red again and wanted to disapear.
"B-Because ok! Why do you care!" He said his voice rising angrily. Basil didn't know when it happened or how but he was standing up and his hand had dropped out of Devons.
"Look-I can't choose where I'm born or my name! I can't choose where I live!" Basil stepped backward then turned and ran away. She's so rude and I just couldn't take it. I've never stood up for myself like that. Basil realized. Basil heard the last clue and remembered what his dad had told him. Ahh. Those are iris's-or Fleur-de-lis as they are uncommenly known as. Most people think Fleur-de-lis as lilly's. Basil felt his dad's voice fill in his head. He looked for bushes of an iris. A girl a bit next to him pulled out the key. Basil smiled as the doors opened up. He realized that he didn't have his date with him. He had run away. He wondered if he should just walk in anyway.
