It's better to light a candle than curse the dark

People around me find it strange for me to take with me what I have the most and cherish, even if it's weird. Cuddly toys or even... My books, my plays. It's weird in the eyes of others, but for me, it's priceless. "The work I have is so old... My father gambled his connections to get me one of the oldest versions. I doubt it's written by Shakespeare himself, but maybe one of his descendants or something." Half-thoughtful.

At the same time, I listened to the young boy explain to me that he had already been to Venice. "My cousin on my mother's side lives there, but I'm on a hill at the top of the Colosseum, a few miles away, but all in all, in Rome. My grandma lives there, it's like a vacation home if you see the thing. One day you'll come, you promise me that Matthew? And if you're interested, I also have a book about the Trojan War. Okay, do you want more cookies? You brought what, you?" I say, a little bit of a question and a laugh at the same time.

I also wanted to ask him about something deeper, but I was a little worried that it would be weird. No big deal. "You know, it's not easy for anyone to leave their family. I'm the middle child of the family and I'm forgotten about everything, then that stress is gone now but a new one has come along. You may be my only friend at this point in the year, but I look brave to defend my own, but this weight is heavy. I don't care about the nastiness about who we are. Muggle born at this point. It's amazing to have someone who understands. You're amazing." Thanks, goodness, for this friend!

Calming Presence
Is In Effect
Sitting there in the darkness her final words upset him, he didn't want Rowan to feel like she was unloved, he didn't understand how it was possible. Unfortunately, he had just stuffed a cookie in his mouth and began rapidly chewing it so he could comfort her, "Rowan, I only met you a few hours ago and yet you are one of the most incredible people I've ever met. You're kind, and helpful and you make me laugh. I'm sorry that anyone ever made you feel forgotten about because I think you are like sun on a rainy day. Even sat here in the darkness I can see how bright you shine!" He had a smile as wide as his face by the end, realising that when it really came to it he knew the perfect words to say.

Rowan made Matthew feel like they could speak about anything without judgement and that she'd understand him no matter what and that was a gift most powerful. "As for Italy, if you think I'm not coming to visit you're mental! You couldn't stop me if you tried, plus I know we've barely started at Hogwarts but I worry what it will be like when we go back to the muggle world. How do we just pretend like magic doesn't exist again?!" It wasn't something he had really vocalised before as they had only just begun their journey but he already felt so disconnected from his past life barely 2 weeks in. Deciding to throw the worry away for now he instead took up Rowan's hand and squeezing it affirmingly he said "Here, have some of the sweets I brought, sugar always makes everything better! I'd love to see your copy of Hamlet one day I love old books they're the best kind."

With his hand he was brushing the corner of hers with his thumb, a relaxation technique he'd found with his father that calmed people and taking a deep breath he spoke once again softly "You know Rowan, you're going to make the best friends in the world here. A proper family who will see you for exactly who you are and want to see you shine. No one is ever going to forget you, and worse comes to worst, you have me!" Matthew's tone was so gentle in the stillness of the night it could have been the night air itself.
