The light in the darkness of the night

Making sure to pack some extra supplies at dinner before he made his way up, he managed to sneak some crisps and a few sweets from one of the tables. Then he set out into the dark of the castle constantly on watch for prefects and professors but the coast seemed to be clear. Being late he had gotten into his pyjamas, showing his Scottish heritage in his families tartan, and the crocs he had brought from home. Making his way up to the corridors it suddenly dawned on him, he had no clue where the painting Rowan had asked to meet by was. The boy could barely find his way to class let alone specific paintings.
Standing on a staircase debating where to go it suddenly began moving and he braced himself, he had been on the moving staircases many times by now but never alone and never at night. As soon as the staircase stopped he rushed off into the darkness of one of the upper corridors, hoping with all his might that he wasn't too far away he pushed on into the darkness. Stumbling along he reminisced on the happiness he felt when Rowan had invited him to join her tonight but it was quickly broken as he bumped into something in the dark. Heart sinking to his knees he waited for the inevitable telling off he was about to receive but as he opened his eye he recognised the familiar face of a smiling Rowan looking at him and was relieved to see she was also in her pyjamas. "Hey! I found you, I was beginning to think I'd never find my way around this castle but the stairs led me right to you, I come bearing gifts." he handed her a bag of crisps and some sweets and couldn't hide the large grin from his face.

Then it was there, her red hair illuminating the castles dark corridor like a flame, he smiled at her and hoped that every adventure would be as fun as this one. Sitting down he replied "Well we have to keep up our energy for all this trouble-making!", he found himself giggling as he took in the emptiness around the two of them. Speaking partly to Rowan and partly to himself he said "Don't you just love it at night when everything here is still, it's like you can finally take a breath." He hadn't realised that other than this moment he really hadn't allowed himself to just take everything in; every day was a new lesson, a new spell, a new lecture and the homework was a huge reach from the primary school work he used to do. He loved it, that was not to be mistaken but it was hard. Just a few weeks ago he had been a regular kid who just had to hope all of this existed and now he was to perform it around people who spent years preparing expectantly for their invitation. How was he to keep up with those people, but here Rowan was, clearly gifted already at Charms and with so much confidence in herself.
Taking her hand to help her sit down he spoke again, "Do you ever miss the muggle world, like TV and the games and just I- I don't know sometimes I just think why me? Does that make any sense? I've never thought of myself as special and now here I am performing spells that just months ago were stories in books." He looked towards Rowan comforted in the knowledge that even if she didn't feel the same she still saw him and understood where he was coming from, it was impossible not to as one of us.
