𝓑ex eyed the ice dubiously, contemplating which area of the lake looked as though it had the thickest ice and was therefore the least likely to leave her a sopping, miserable little rat, as she swung the skates in her hand back and forth by their laces. She liked the look of her new skates, which were sleek, black, and surprisingly delicate and graceful for an activity that she understood to necessitate a certain amount of strength and stamina in those who did it well. They'd been a Christmas gift from her dad this year, as supposedly skating on the Great Lake was a long-time winter tradition at Hogwarts. They had come with a second, far more versatile gift for the young, notoriously cold-averse Ravenclaw: a blue winter cloak, lined with fur on the inside and that made her feel the good "Hocus Pocus" kind of witchy, and not the less good "currently attending Hogwarts" kind of witchy. And, most importantly, it was warm.

She wanted it on the record, though, that wearing the new cloak her dad had gotten her did not mean that she forgave him. But it was very cold out, and her cloak was very warm, so. Whatever. Stay in your lane.

She sat for a few moments and laced up her skates before stumbling her way ingloriously out onto the ice. She gave herself but a few moments to acclimate to the new experience of trying to keep her balance on the ice, as she impatient to join the other students milling about around the lake. While she'd never tried ice skating before, and as such had little understanding mechanics-wise of what exactly she was supposed to be doing here, she did have a plethora of experience when it came to throwing herself headfirst into new activities in order to try and quell the buzzing under her skin, and so this was exactly what she did.

No better way to learn than quickly, right? Besides, she'd be meeting up with Helena at lunch time, so she only had a scant few hours to get this right. Falling on the ice probably couldn't be any worse than getting knocked off your broom by a bludger, so with little regard for her own safety - let alone for that of those around her - she took off at a brisk pace towards the center of the lake.

Today, what with the frigid, breath-freezing air and the bitter Scottish wind, was not a great day for running, yet Koko had gone anyway. Just a quick jog around the lake, she had told herself. Just a quick jog, just some quick training, and then a nice, long hot cocoa break.

Suffice to say, that was not what occurred. Her run itself was quick, for as she approached, the lake, her light brown eyes widened minutely. Figures were already dancing along its frozen, glassy surface, and the sight was strangely familiar before she realised they were skating. All thoughts of hot chocolate, warmth and comfort forgotten, she hurried to the Slytherin dormitories and hunched over her trunk, searching for an embarrassingly long time before she found a pair of old, hardly-used ice skates that her grandfather had gotten her in her fourth year.

After picking out a decent winter cloak to pull over her hoodie (and also deciding that her fleece-lined leggings were a good enough choice so long as the ice didn't break), she jogged back to the lake, a smile warming her otherwise cold features. She began to tie on her skates almost giddily, somewhat like a young child opening gifts on Christmas morning. Any form of exercise was a treat in itself to Koko, but skating was a challenge, and the young Slytherin appreciated challenges more than almost anything.

Once her skates were securely tied onto her feet, she slipped out onto the ice. She'd done this a few times when she was younger, and she'd never been too awful at it. Her balance seemed better now that she was older. It was probably due to the endurance she'd built up from so many years of Quidditch. If someone came barrelling towards her, she might not be able to evade, but she would certainly be able to stay on her feet... or so she hoped.

With that thought in mind, she set off at a decently slow pace. She wanted to have peace of mind today; it wasn't a Quidditch day, so it wasn't a time to go quickly. If anyone looked to be having trouble with skating, she would keep an eye out, but for now, she would keep to herself.

If a Part-Veela is being attacked there will be an urge to assist or protect them. Each round there is a 10% chance that an opponent in a duel or a moderated situation will decide to ally with the Part-Veela even against their own allies and attempt to protect them. This is not necessarily a romantic thing, but rather could be roleplayed as a fascination, a desire to not let something pretty be ruined, etc. This has nothing to do with sexual attraction unless as an RP'er that is what the user wishes to RP it as. This ability does not affect other Veela or Part-Veela. It will not stack if multiple Veela or Part-Veela are present.

Part-Veela Scream
Reducio
Part-Veelas are not nearly as attractive when they are angry. Their scream can be disorienting (-1 accuracy and -1 evasion), requiring a full action to perform but does not require a wand. This can stack indefinitely and persist until the end of the encounter. This scream can target a single user or it can target up to five users (as an AOE attack).

Alternatively, this spell can be used to temporarily deafen an opponent. So rather than cause the player to become disoriented, they would become deafened (unable to hear) for the next 5 rounds.

There were few exercises Pericles enjoyed quite as much as flying these days. Ever since accomplishing his animagus transformation, he took to the skies on a near daily basis, so long as the weather wasn't miserable for a white-bellied sea-eagle. Seeing no snow beyond his dormitory window, he was bracing for a flight when movement out on the grounds caught his eye. His plans changed once he realized what the others were up to: the lake was finally frozen over enough to skate on. Ice skating used to be the closest he came to flying, not accounting for brooms. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth before he broke away to rummage through his trunk.

Pericles made a point to bring his blades with him after every winter break. He pulled on a pair of gloves, tied the laces of both boots together, and clenched them between his teeth. His arms were about to be wings, after all. The Ravenclaw carefully eased out of the Tower window by his bed before transforming. It made an odd sight, a great white bird carrying a set of skates in its beak, but perhaps not the oddest thing one would see around Hogwarts. It circled once overhead, scanning for signs of anyone familiar. There was Ying, the young Gryffindor he had moderated a duel for, and more familiarly Koko, the lovely Slytherin he'd had the misfortune of severely traumatizing with his pet spider. Pericles made a mental note to say hello soon, but not yet, for most prominently of all, his own apprentice-on-ice was present: Alyssea from the Plymouth rink.

The eagle swooped low to the ground before becoming a wizard once more. Momentum left him trotting to a stop at the end of his flight, where- for one very brief but comedic moment- he was a boy holding his skate laces by his teeth. They were tucked under an arm as he dragged a sleeve across his lips, then all too nonchalantly took a seat on a log, setting aside his boots and lacing up his personal blades. It was an awkward trek through the snow between the log and lake, but once he reached the ice, the young man moved with the apparent grace of a practiced skater. He set off speedily with the intention of catching up to a certain witch. Once he had, he slowed, smoothly sliding up alongside Alyssea with a proud smile. "Hullo again, 'Lys. It's good to see you putting your talent to use."

Today was apparently a lake day.

After the morning's polar plunge, June found herself defrosting in her common room, trying to relish in whatever freedom the caretaker envisioned the event bringing. Avery Leveret was there for a while, but neither acknowledged the other as they simply relished the warmth. And who could blame them? They were, after all, living underground.

Her eyes followed him as he left the common room, seemingly dressed for the outdoors, a tattered box slipped under his arm. Curious. She didn't give it much thought, instead leaning back against a divan and letting her cold feet soak up as much warmth as they could.

It was after the fifth person left the common room holding a pair of ice skates that June pieced together what was happening. Skating... She'd never done it before. Was this good skating weather? It must have been for so many to decide to partake in such an activity. She turned over the idea for a while, like one turns over a smooth river stone. Feeling it, fidgeting with it, almost to the point of irritating your fingers. With the rest of the day splayed out in front of her, and an essay for Muggle Studies that she quite honestly did not want to write that day, she made her choice.

June did not own ice skates. But fortunately for her (unfortunately for her outfit), Maggie Hawkins did. They were fairly unused, Maggie preferred to skate on wheels, after all, but they were certainly not clean. The white skates had been defaced with a "Sharp-ee", covered in little doodles and what were apparently lyrics to a song (those from the muggle world would likely recognize lines from Evanescence's 'Bring Me To Life' written all over the skates. 'Wake me up inside' indeed).

She laced them up best she could, numb fingers slipping over one another, before taking the tiniest, most minuscule steps known to man, approaching the frozen shore. With a breath and a prayer, she pushed herself onto the ice. It was all in the hands of fate, now.

Wren peeked out of the castle's door and examined her surroundings. Snow was new to her as she had spent her whole life at sea. She stuck one of her booted feet out of the door and tested the snow. She laughed as it made a crunching noise beneath her feet. She then stepped fully out the door, ice skates slung over shoulder. As her other foot hit the snow she laughed and began to hop around in the snow. She got tired of hopping around in the snow and turned her attention to the thing that drew her out of castle in the first place the skaters. Wren's father had owled some ice skates to her at the beginning of December and she hadn't gotten them out.

She stood at the top of the hill for a minute and stared down at the lake. She could see some people already skating but some were putting on their skates. Wren made her way down the hill and plopped down on the bank of the lake next to a boy to put on her ice skates. "Hi, i'm Wren Mornstern" she said turning to the boy and extending her hand. This seemed to be a typical greeting here and she had seen her family do it so she figured she would try it out. "Is this really water?" she asked. This would come off to a stupid question to anyone else but Wren hadn't really seen water freeze because the ocean doesn't freeze. She waited for the boy to respond before lacing up her skates and standing up and stepping on to the ice.

The snow and her perpetual lack of going outside meant that Maria was paler than usual. Even when she’d gone home for Christmas the young girl mostly spent her time with Aiden. The young boy, a rambunctious toddler had recently showed signs of magic when he lit their father’s tie on fire. The three other occupants of the Dee household since learned that his temper would be triggered when his favorite koala was taken away from him. At least this time, Chester was a bit more prepared.

The January chill and snow also brought with it the prospect of ice skating. A fluffy blanket of snow had enveloped the Hogwarts grounds, and a sheet of ice now covered the Great Lake.

Briefly, she hoped the squid was okay.

In the off months that Maria wasn’t able to swim, ice skating was a fun pass time. Her father was the first to teach her how, albeit he was no Kristi Yamaguchi on the ice, he certainly was able to skate in circles for hours with her mother. (Though some funny gentlemen once asked her mother if she was related to Yamaguchi, and to this day Maria still thinks about that.) Her father loved the snow, said it reminded him of when he first met her mother. It was sweet really, the way they’d hold hands and skate about, leaving Maria in plain sight but to her own volition like a well-attached third wheel. She didn’t mind though, skating around was much better than watching her parents look at each other with fondness.

Skates in tow, the girl came up on the Lake, and saw that several other students were already there making quite literal rounds. In the distance she could see the older Xailah Alptraum, one of the few unmistakeable students whose unique aura could send a shudder down your spine from a mile away. She wasn’t intimidating or anything but there was just something about the older girl that made Maria need to squint and observe. The Hufflepuff decided she would skate by and say hi.

She was by a younger boy (Avery Leveret), a duelist from Slytherin, Maria remembered. His angular features made her think of and antagonist in a morally-gray love triangle, but who was she to judge. Other students were there as well, a few duelists and others she did not recognize. Approaching the edge, she put on her skates with minimal difficulty, and off she was on the ice, gliding idly towards Xailah. β€œHello there.” She greeted.

The great lake had become an attraction as it often did. It was early this season, and it was especially early for it to be this dry and bright; the depths of Scotland were harsh and dark but today the winter sun had pierced and cleared the clouds and made for a bright and mild mid-morning; and it made for perfect skating, at times…

Many of the skaters seemed to take to the ice perfectly, and without any issues. Xailah was first on the rink, of them all, and she had seemingly been enjoying herself for a while given the markings left in the ice; a tapestry of her movements as she whizzed around the lake at some speed; confident and eager to feel the cold wind in her hair. She navigated the ice with the ease and poise of a professional, but she grew cocky in her dominance over the ice. In the end, her balance would be what failed her as she followed the coastline; having skated up to Avery and continued for a distance. She veered to the right, and found that her weight went that way all too fast and she couldn’t stop herself. She was the first on the lake, and the first casualty of it.

Maria was witness to it, as moments after she’d greeted the seventh year, she’d toppled. If it were Avery, who was sat nearby; he’d have surely attributed his own fall to such a distraction. Perhaps he would yet still, as he just barely kept his balance on the skates on dry ground, let alone the ice. Fang Hui-Ying approached him, but too lost her footing on a rogue tangle of roots.

Others followed, understanding that this was just a part of ice skating, it’s what made it fun. Alyssea skated onto the ice and faced no difficulties, opting to keep herself steady before committing to speed; though would she after Xailah’s display? Another girl, Sage, took to the ice as well. The girl seemed as experienced and as confident as Alyssea, but she too had no problems as the pair moved in roughly the same direction, and roughly the same speed. At around 3 of 4 metres into the lake proper; where the fear of the icy depths was likely palpable for those of that disposition, Guinevere passed them, as if she was in another world. She was holding a perfect posture fit for a competing figure skater. If one were to hazard a guess, she was likely to have experience given how she flawlessly executed a maneuvre that saw her legs weaving in a skating pattern designed for both efficient and elegant movement; completely confident the ice would hold her and her peers.

Quinn was not as experienced as Guinevere, not nearly, especially as she lunged with one leg and felt her eager self follow in panic. To save herself from the embarrassment of a fall, she committed to a spectacular recovery and saved herself from a tragic start. Someone clapped somewhere, especially given how much of a lost cause that had looked. It took skill to take a failure and dress it up to look intentional the entire time.

Some were fearful of the depth, moving slow and building up their confidence; but not Rebecca. Intentional or not, Rebecca was almost moving as fast as Xailah. It was hard to tell if she was faking it until she made it, but to her she may have had minor panic when she skated past an area of ice that hadn’t set and would have seen her plunge. As she peeled her eyes back though, she saw a calamity moments before it struck as Kaitlyn was pathing straight towards June! At the last possible moment, June twisted herself out of the way and ended up shifting into Pericles’ path who also hadn’t expected the dominoes to fall thus. Fraught panic again, as the pair avoided each other and an awkward crash to the fractal floor. The white haired boy had seemed to skating just fine up until then, but it was striking how the lake was so large and yet there were a series of crashes so close together. Perhaps skating out further to the lake would avoid all the unconfident skaters and thus a more enjoyable time was to be found out there?

Some needed help, or at least moral support, which was what Koko was seemingly giving to Ophelia as she slowly took to the ice. Wren Mornstern was just a little distance too far for anyone to support, as she immediately fell face-first to the ice as soon as she took a step forward. It looked like it hurt, but at least the ice didn’t break; it must be super thick! Others were comfortable on the ice, oblivious to those around them and the effect they were having. Madison was one such person of the latter, wherever she went she drew the eyes of many with the general charm that seemed to surround her; summoned by her smile no doubt. All the while she skated perfectly without unnecessary rushing or wobbling.

Avery didn’t notice Xailah’s stealthy approach as he negotiated with the laces, and started slipping his feet into them. Naturally his eyes flitted to the equally fast queen of winter as she pathed close to him to probe at him. She was partially right, there was an element of fear in him; but that was the spurring he needed to swallow it down and finally take to his feet after fastening them. The feeling of standing on sloped ground, on a thin blade of metal was terrifying; moreso when he actually put his weight on them and his bambi-legs began to show. They wobbled and wobbled, swaying this way and that. His face was a picture as it twisted and contorted with each movement. His arms shot out to the sides to steady himself and he seemed to regain balance at the last possible second as he pushed his hips forward and straightened.

”Pffffffff.- Hah. Haha! This isn’t so bad. It’s easy!” He gave after blowing out his now flushed cheeks; there was life in the pallid toned boy. By the time he had turned his attention to Xailah, who he could immediately identify giving their harrowing first meeting, something had gone wrong with her mocking as she ended up on her ass a few moments after offering her expert help. Avery, as he was, could only bite his lip to suppress a laugh. ”No I’m quite alright Miss Alptraum!” he called over the ice, not going so far as to rub it in her face directly; instead basking in the karmic forces of the universe.

His smile remained as he turned his attention to Fang Hui-Ying, who had briefly asked him a question that he caught in his periphery.

β€œThat’s right, we’ve met. Your brother sleeps six feet away from me, but unfortunately if I said any more I’d be breaking the code of Merlin.” Avery gave with a smile, though before it managed to land, Ying lost her balance and a wince took over his expression. He was too far to help her, but he offered anyway; the kind of offer that was distant and respectful that she could steady herself.

β€œOouf.” he exclaimed, a typical french expression for one with a considerably amount of French blood in him. β€œYou’re not even on the ice yet, Miss Fang…” he teased, standing straight then. Avery always preferred when he had a leg up on somebody, and knowing her name and her not knowing his was something that he’d consider a win. The mystery would remain, as he beamed a grin at her, letting her sort herself out as he finally took to the ice, and confidently stepped forward; one foot after the other, getting used to the feel of the slick but solid surface that would carry him.

Wren had introduced herself and fallen flat on her face shortly after, and to this he couldn’t suppress the laugh that came from her misfortune.

β€œWhat an introduction. - You two are made for each other!” He called back to Wren and Ying who was only a short distance behind her; clearly he was in a teasing mood, or perhaps he was deflecting from his own nervousness as if willing that he succeed.

It took some mental gymnastics to get comfortable with the idea of being suspended by a thin sheet of melting ice that would soon be water. Wren’s question was odd, but it stuck with him as if some deeply philosophical perspective he hadn’t considered; it was something to focus on that wasn’t the thought of drowning, or freezing below a ceiling of glass that kept him from keeping air. Thankfully a welcome reprieve passed him by, Madison gracefully glided by and he shot her a reserved smile. He wanted some more time to ensure he’d lost his bambi legs before he did anything too daring; like approaching June who he could see across the way.

𝓒all it whatever you'd like - a newfound, innate talent for ice skating, the perks of general athleticism, or just plain luck - but you couldn't deny that Bex's "rush in, ask questions later" strategy was going well. Like, really well. She'd managed to not only stay on her feet, but actually made it way farther out onto the ice than she'd expected. She had a brief moment of uncertainty as she almost hit a patch of rough-looking ice, but she managed to successfully divert course away from it with little hardship. So far this was shaping up to be an easy, much needed win for the First Year Ravenclaw.

Looking around her, though, she realized that quite a few more students had made their way onto the ice, some of whom seemed to be having significantly less luck than she had. A few feet away from her, a distance that was rather too close for comfort, a group of three students narrowly avoided colliding with one another. While thankfully all three managed to stay on their feet, with the amount of people all out on the lake at once it was only a matter of time before inexperienced skaters would begin colliding with each other in earnest.

While Bex could definitely take a hit, she refused to let anyone interrupt her cool new skating flow unnecessarily. Grimacing, she moved to make some distance between herself and the other skaters, and with a newfound confidence born of her previous success, she shot off towards the center of the lake at an even faster pace than before.

While not quite as fun as flying, there was something to be said for moving so fast of your own body's power, of being able to feel the soreness in your muscles as you push yourself to see how far you can go. Was she skating correctly? Hard to say. But by God, she's here, she's there, she's everywhere; no, you can't catch her now.
Action: Bex transitions to skating at a racing pace.
Skill Level: Novice; Look at her go, though.

For whatever sick and twisted reason, Astra couldn't seem to escape the lake today. Sure, she could've chosen to stay by the fire in Slytherin Common Room, if she had wanted Hermes to go out of his mind with boredom and start play fighting with her unsuspecting housemates. That had already happened more than once and Astra was loathe to let it reoccur. So outside it was with her ever curious feline friend, romping through the snow.

He led her back to the tree she had been sitting under that morning, back to the lake. Astra sighed and raised an eyebrow at the Mau. He simply gave her a slow blink and that sort of "almost smile" that some cats have. "Don't be so cheeky," she scolded lightly. Her words were met with a self-satisfied purr and a swish of the tail as Hermes continued in his feline fancies.

She looked onto the lake and was surprised by a horde of people on the ice, skating away at various speeds and skills. Many she recognized from Slytherin, and others, like the Hawk and Anti-Sabotager and her cousin Alyssea and Xailah Alptrain or whatever her last name was.

The girl also noted the presence of one Avery Leveret, someone who she was quite surprised to see. He hadn't seemed one to take part in activities of leisure.

But enough about Leveret. Man has a big enough ego without knowing attentions were on him.

Astra was interested in Anti-Sabotager.

She didn't know what it was about this girl, there was nothing special about her. Other than the fact that she was obviously a stick in the mud and had no business poking into Elsian's schemes and bribes. Perhaps, since Anti was so against sabotage, Astra would sabotage her. Ironic, innit?

Astra reached up and yanked a good sized icicle from the lowest tree branch. Hm. A bit dangerous. And while Astra would love to practice javelin with ice, she wasn't aiming for murder. At least, not in that method. How uncivilized. If she were to murder, she'd likely use poisons or untraceable spells or something.

But enough about that. Astra knelt down in the snow and began to form the most perfect winter projectiles. That's right, snowballs. Round, aerodynamic, and primed for peak explosivity. Astra firmly packed the snow into place with her gloved hands, and Hermes spared her a glance, looking up from his pouncing around curiously.

"Are you ready for a show, boy?" she asked him in a low tone, chuckling as she stood, primed to throw.

And throw she did. She anticipated Anti's reaction with relish.

More people poured in as she skated around, testing the ice. The ice never cracked beneath her and only the flakes of shaved ice followed her trail. Looking around, she saw her badger bestie, Madison, take to the ice without any issues. When did she learn to do that? Alyssea knew her mostly for her Quidditch prowess, so this was a surprise. She smiled as she watched people enter and skate around (with varying degrees of success. That fall Xailah experienced had to hurt).

Then came a familiar voice that brought her back to herself. "Hullo again, 'Lys."

It had been a while since she had heard that voice, though not too long. He was there at the Fall Ball when things went awry at the lake (that they were standing on now and definitely wouldn't fall through). She heard him when a massive fight broke out, though Alyssea avoided it and stuck with Raizel and Zach. How long has it been since they were last on the ice? It felt so far away now after everything that happened.

Alyssea grinned. "Peri! I've been practicing lots. Andβ€”oh! Watch out!"

Pericles didn't need the warning, of course. He was a figure skater. So when a student [June] almost crashed into him, he avoided it easily. Alyssea chuckled. "I hope that doesn't happen to me, today. I'm still figuring out how to stop smoothly."

Skating, she could definitely do now. Skating backwards was still a trainwreck and stopping mostly happened when she could crash and cling to the wall. Alyssea looked around. No walls, only other students and maybe landing on the snow-laden grass to stop herself. Hopefully the snow made for a good pillow.

"I've been learning a jump, though," she said. It was a basic jump and nothing flashy like what skaters did back at the Plymouth rink. Last she attempted it was the day before New Year's Eve when she went skating with her brother.

Alyssea set off to start her momentum. Part of her hoped that jump wasn't a fluke and she could actually pull this off.
