I've done that already, I stated that his friends and family were shocked and he was as well but was happy that he has the ability

You could add a scene of your character either practicing the new ability or trying to investigate more into it.

I believe for my metamorphmagus application I included a lengthy family tree explanation and the scene where she found out she had the talent, and then a scene of her trying to find out more about her newfound ability.

So many metamorphmagus people!
