Once all the chatter died down, Alaric slung the curtain shut and laid down in his bed. He wasn’t going to sleep yet; he wasn’t tired. Alaric liked it here so far, the people he had met were nice and although they may be in different cabins, he knew that Maila is about and he would see her!
He put his hands behind his head and looked up at the bottom of the top bunk. It was nerve wracking, the wait up until the first Quidditch game for his school. A grin came on his face when he thought about the broom that he has. This would be Alaric’s first time playing officially and not with his dad. It would be with older students whom he hasn’t really spoken to before. Wonder if Klaus can watch, he thought, And Maila. He wouldn’t blame them if they couldn’t or didn’t want to. Well, he wouldn’t blame Maila and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Klaus didn’t watch.
He imagined getting on his broom, holding the bat, and swooping up in the air with the crowd cheering, a massive grin on his face. His team also revelling in the good cheer before they CRUSH their opponent! Alaric imagined swinging the bat and hitting the bludger, watching as it hurtled to the enemy and he saw Valentine swoop up and encase the snitch in his golden hand.
A sigh broke out, if only. Alaric would do all he could to help the team and he didn’t want to disappoint them! What if he accidentally let go of the bat? What if, instead of hitting the right player, the bludger went hurtling toward Vyacheslav or Romeo? I would be such a bad team player! He shook his head clean of those thoughts. He would be good and would make sure his team knew that he was the right choice for these summer games!

RPing as Zophyr Qethnis from Uagadou Genderfluid, pronouns at the moment: they/them☽ Kirundi | French | English | Swahili | Arabic | Tswana | Xhosa ☾Zophyr had just finished putting all their things away, and now they weren't sure what to do. Well, they had things to do, but they felt like it was wrong, in a way, to do them right away. After all, they had just gotten here... there had been some chatter in the cabin, yes, but now that that was over, there was a peculiar silence. And Zophyr did not like silence in the least. So they decided to look around for someone to talk to.

There was a boy from Durmstrang that they had noticed earlier - actually, it would have been impossible not to notice him. He had been loud and proud and excited, saying his school was by far the best, and talking about a girl he was sad not to be in the same cabin as. He was quiet now though, and seemed to be lost in thought, grinning at one moment and then frowning. This was, Zopyr decided, the right candidate.
The Uagadou student jumped down from their top bunk and walked over to the boy. Maybe this was a bad idea - perhaps the boy didn't want to talk to anyone right now, or maybe he liked the silence - but Zophyr did not care. They rarely worried about whether what they were doing was the "right" thing. They were aware of their actions and their consequences, but that didn't mean it stopped them.
"Hello," they said with a slight smile. "Alaric, is it not?" An easy enough way to start a conversation, if the boy wished to. And they were sure he would - he had proved to be much too talkative to turn down such an opportunity.

Alaric heard a thud and turned just to see the curtain being pulled back and someone poking their head through. "Ja. I am Alaric, you can call me Al oder Ricky oder Rick oder Lar," Yes/Or he replied, rambling slightly and moving so he was hugging his legs and looking at him. "Who are you?" Alaric asked, he didn’t think that he caught the other persons name earlier because they made a break for the top bunk. Alaric didn’t even realise that the top bunk was the top bunk of his bottom bunk.
Wait, did that make sense.
Alaric forgot about that and instead patted the bed. "Want to sit? What school do you go to? I will be willing to place them in the number second spot for best school, we all know what’s third," Alaric meant to say 'first' Alaric said with a smirk, making room by sliding to sit on his pillow. Alaric was already beginning to warm up to this person!
Alaric thought for something that he was missing. He didn’t know any of these people, well he didn’t know anyone that didn’t attend Durmstrang and who he didn’t interact with in April. Oh yes. "Urm, what are your going for? Pronouns?" he asked awkwardly; is this how you’re supposed to ask? Did he even word that right? Or are you supposed to slyly hint that you didn’t know? Or automatically not refer to people by gendered pronouns until you know? Alaric had no clue. He probably should try to learn but he figured this tactic was best.
Alaric kicked his socks off and grinned at the other student. Perhaps they could be friends! I mean, who doesn’t want to be friends Alaric? He is amazing and charming and handsome and funny. "Are you doing a sport? Do you speak Deutsch oder Русский?" German or Russian
Alaric really hoped he did because he had a feeling he would be conversing in English for the entire month.

RPing as Zophyr Qethnis from Uagadou Genderfluid, pronouns at the moment: they/them☽ Kirundi | French | English | Swahili | Arabic | Tswana | Xhosa ☾The boy was quick to give Zophyr a list of nicknames they could use, with quite a thick accent that the Uagadou student couldn't place. It was probably European. They decided 'Alaric' was fine and probably wouldn't use any of the aforementioned nicknames. When the boy asked what their own name was, they replied, "I am Zophyr, Zophyr Qethnis."

Alaric patted the spot next to him on the bed, asking if they wanted to sit. Zophyr obliged, sitting down next to him as he asked them what school they were from. "I go to Uagadou. You are from Durmstrang, right?" It was a bit of a rhetorical question, but they wanted to make sure. They tilted their head, confused, at the mention of the third best school. "Third?" What was first, then? Because if the spot was vacant, Zophyr would be glad to place Uagadou there.
A little awkwardly, Alaric then asked what Zophyr's pronouns were (or at least, they were pretty sure that's what he was asking. His accent and way of speaking was slightly confusing). "Oh, I go by they/them at the moment." It might change, but they didn't want to get into that at the moment. "What about you, if I may ask?"
The boy seemed rather extraverted. Someone who liked to be around other people. Zophyr could relate, at times, though sometimes they really disliked company. Such was being an ambivert. Honestly, Alaric reminded them a lot of Reuben Garcia, though maybe a more naïve version. Thankfully for the Durmstrang student, Zophyr was feeling more extraverted today than when they'd first met Reuben.
Unsurprisingly, Alaric had a few more questions for them. He asked whether they were 'doing a sport' - "Yes, I play quidditch. I'm a beater for the Uagadou team," - and if they spoke two languages Zophyr did not know. They shook their head. "I speak many languages, but not very many are from Europe. What are the languages that you speak?" He'd said them in his own tongue, so they had no idea what he'd been saying.

Alaric inclined his head and held a hand out, "Nice to meet you, Zophyr Quethnis. Pleasure," Alaric greeted with a grin. Yes, he was full of grins today; it was so exciting!
Zophyr took the seated invitation, much to Alaric’s pleasant surprise, and informed the German beater of the school they went to. "Oh. That is the school… in der Berg? Uh, I meant in the mountains?" questioned Alaric, trying to remember anything from his lessons. "Your school sounds fantastic," he complemented. What? He could compliment, sure nothing could ever beat Durm but that didn’t mean he couldn’t compliment.
Zophyr sounded confused when they echoed “Third?” back to him. Alaric nodded with a noise of agreement. He couldn’t believe that this kid didn’t agree. Sure, perhaps the boy didn’t attend Durmstrang but even then you know who would win. Who always wins.
"Ja, numberEIN!" he called, holding one finger out. "Then Uagadou and number drei…" Alaric tried to think. Honestly, he didn’t have opinions on most of the schools. He just knew which was the best and which was the worst. Alaric was then told that Zophyr went by they/them and the boy was glad he had asked! Alaric was asked about his own pronouns. "He," the beater replied while removing the offending article of thing still— his socks.
Alaric’s hole face lit up. "You are a bat! Me also! I wonder if we will see each other in the pitch," he rambled to the other student. Yeah, they played for Uagadou and they could be on the opposite team, however right now they were just two b- uh, two students sitting on a bed and talking. "How long are you been on the team?" Alaric questioned, he wondered if his new friend had been on there longer than he. This was Alaric’s first game!
The German boy got happy when Zophyr mentioned their knowledge of many languages; perhaps there was a chance they know German or Russian, only to be met down when he was reminded he called the languages by their name in their language. This was the biggest sign ever that the beater in front of me wouldn’t know a lick of them two languages. "I speak German and Russian and a liitle English," he replied, making his voice go a little high at laying down to fulfil the slight exaggeration. "Und— And you?" maybe Zophyr knows a language Alaric knows!? And if not then the German can attempt to learn?

"You as well." The boy grinned back, and when they mentioned Uagadou, he asked if it was that school "in the mountains". "Yes." Alaric sounded sure of himself when Zophyr, confused, repeated "third?" Apparently that was exactly what he'd meant, which only confused the Uagadou student more. Then, putting up one finger, he said something in his language, a number that sounded a lot like the "un" one in French. "Do... you mean one?" Zophyr asked, putting up a finger of their own. It would make a little more sense, but they had no idea if Alaric's language was at all connected to French.
As it turned out, Alaric's pronouns were he/him (or, as he had stated - while pulling his socks off - just 'he'). And as soon as Zophyr said the word Quidditch, the boy was somehow smiling even more than he had been before. "You're also a beater?" Zophyr said, surprised. They hadn't met many of those yet - then again, they hadn't met many of anything yet. The only other beater they knew of was Kissa.
"That's really cool!" they said, finally giving the boy a full-blown grin. "I hope we will. I only joined this year, so I haven't even had my first game yet. What about you?" Quidditch was one of those subjects that would make them excited almost without fail. Especially if they were talking to someone of the same position as them!
German, Russian, and English. Unfortunately, Zophyr only spoke one of those languages, and it was the one Alaric spoke a 'liiittle' bit of. At least they could speak to each other, though they had very different accents. "I speak English, French, Kirundi and Swahili, and I'm learning a couple of other ones but I'm not great at them just yet." French came in handy with Beauxbatons students, but it was the only language apart from English that basically anyone here who didn't go to Uagadou knew. German and Russian sounded interesting, though. Maybe he could teach them some.

So that was the school in the mountains, Alaric was proud of himself for knowing that one detail. Then Zophry asked where Durmstrang was, Merlin that was a question and a half. Alaric had to try and remember his history lessons, "It is far away from hier," he said mysteriously, a glint in his eye. "Across dangerous seas and over big mountains," then he decided to play a game. "You know that we are… urm… our eyes are covered when we go to there. We are not permitted to see where Durmstrang is," he lied, keeping his face neutral as to not give it away. Alaric didn’t think anyone really knew where Durmstrang was because of the big and tedious search you have to do to find it.
Zophry seemed confused as Alaric spoke about Durmstrang being the best, they couldn’t seem to grasp what Alaric was saying. They asked if Alaric meant ‘one’ and the boy paused a little, Zophry could probably see the clogs turning in his little brain as he thought back to what he meant. Then a blush rose on his cheeks, "Ja, I mean one," he said, casting his eyes downwards for a moment. He cleared his throat, desperate to move on.
Alaric responded to the question thrown his way and absentmindedly pulled his socks off, they were getting annoying and it felt like his foot was suffocating. "How can people wear these," he muttered to himself, glancing at Zophry when the person exclaimed out about also being a beater. Oh, Alaric said bat. Thankfully, Zophry knew what he meant. "I also this year joined! I wanted to be on the team last year but never put my name forward! I am happy I did this year," Alaric explained, he reached to his trunk and pulled out a new looking book— okay, it was like 3 years old and has sat at the bottom of his trunk ever since it was bought in preparation for his first year. "Want to play a game?" he asked, grabbing a pencil. Quill would be too messy. "And yes. This too is my first game! No matter the results, we should celebrate after the game," Alaric told them, not realising how the day would actually end. "I have been playing for as long as I can remember! My papa plays with me!" he told Zophry loudly, grinning as he remembered the good times.
Zophry told him the languages they speak and, while Alaric had heard of English and French, he hadn’t heard of the others ones. "What are Kirundi and Swahili?" he asked, trying to mould his mouth to say them. Although, he did love how Swahili rolled off of his tongue. "Swahili," he murmured, a childish giggle escaping.

RPing as Zophyr Qethnis from Uagadou Genderfluid, pronouns at the moment: they/them☽ Kirundi | French | English | Swahili | Arabic | Tswana | Xhosa ☾Across dangerous seas and over big mountains... this Durmstrang school sounded mysterious and reclusive. Zophyr was more and more interested. It would be nice if they were able to visit the other schools one day. But Alaric was quick to crush Zophyr's idea - their eyes were covered when they went there. Even Durmstang's own students weren't allowed to know where their school was located. (Zophyr wondered whether that was even legal, for safety reasons). They pouted, aware they probably looked like a little kid, but it seemed Alaric's childishness had rubbed off on them.

"Do they put blindfolds on you?" they asked, wondering how in Earth they could stop a bunch of curious teenagers from finding out where they were going. "How do you get there? And can you not peek?"
When Alaric realized his English mistake, he blushed and looked away, sheepish. That surprised Zophyr quite a bit. He was so confident and silly, it felt like it wasn't even possible for him to be embarrassed.
Just talking about Quidditch, though, seemed to put him back on track. Apparently he was just like Zophyr, having joined this year, and he'd been playing pretty much all his life with his father. Though their backgrounds may have been very different, they at least had that in common. The Durmstrang boy wisely added that whatever the results, they should still celebrate, and Zophyr nodded.
Alaric then asked whether Zophyr wanted to play a game, taking a book and long stick of wood that Zophyr remembered was a muggle thing called a 'pencil'. "Alright," they said, a grin growing on their face. "What kind of game?"
The boy seemed to recognize French and English, but he then frowned, asking what Kirundi and Swahili were. He seemed to really like the sound of them. "Er, they're... languages. Kirundi is one of the three official languages in Burundi, which is where my mother comes from. Swahili is spoken across many, many countries... it's also the language we learn in at Uagadou."

Alaric shook his head, "Nope! When we are getting ready to go, we have the Obscuro charm cast on us!" he said, his tone that more normal now. "If we peak we get our memories wiped and expelled!" he added, thoroughly amused that this person was believing him. Guess his natural bounds of energy was helping him pull it off, if he got excited it wouldn't look suspicious. Zophyr looked a little surprised when Alaric fumbled and so he tried to cover it up as best as he could. He knew it was improper to make simple language mistakes, especially as a boy from a family of his calibre, he just found it hard to remember. He had German, Russian and English all swimming around in his brain and the poor boy can barely remember to put his pants on the right way make a choice on whether to have orange juice or pumpkin juice. He knew that when he finally got the motivation he would try and learn Finnish for Maila, but that would be something else invading his brain.
He started to ramble on about quidditch, a sport that they both seemed to share a passion for. He couldn't believe that they were a beater like himself! What are the chances? He wondered what it would be like if they went against each other! "If we was ever against each other than I wouldn't show any mercy," he said with a smirk, "We might have walked to that pitch friends, but we would be enemies until the last whistle blow!" maybe he and Zophyr could be friends, but he wouldn't put friendship in the way of quidditch. Perhaps Klaus would be proud of this! Of putting his sport before friends, Heavens knows Klaus probably doesn't even have friends to put second, but still.
He was happy when his new friend agreed to play. "It is called 'Noughts and Crosses', or 'Tic-Tac-Toe' if you want," he explained, drawing the square. "Do you want to be noughts or the crosses? I've been told that typically the noughts, or circles, are blue whereas the crosses are red," he explained. Alaric had learnt of this game a couple of years ago and he finds it fun when there isn't much else to do. Like cause chaos he thought with a smirk.
He then questioned them on the languages they spoke. Kirundi and Swahili. That really did feel nice to say. "I know they are languages," he chortled. Alaric listened as they explained them, twisting the pencil in his hands as he did so. "There is three official languages in Bu... Buhndi... the place you mentioned?" he asked. He hadn't known a country to have three official languages... he didn't think so anyway.

When the conversation shifted to Quidditch, Alaric mentioned that even if they were friendly now, it would all end as soon as they got on the pitch if ever they were to face each other. Zophyr nodded, unsurprised. People who let feelings or pity get in front of their ambitions were foolish.
"I would expect nothing less," they said with a sly grin, mirroring Alaric's smirk. Then their smile softened. "But if we do not end up playing against each other, I will definitely be cheering for Durmstrang."
Noughts and Crosses. Zophyr had never heard it called that way, though they recognized the name tic-tac-toe. They remembered having played it at some point in their childhood, when a passing friend must have taught it to them, but the rules had evaded their memory in the time that had passed since. "Er... I'll take red, thank you. I mean crosses," they replied to the Durmstrang boy's query. "But I've completely forgotten how to play."
"Burundi," Zophyr corrected with a chuckle when Alaric stumbled over their words. "And yeah! The other two are English and French. There are a good few countries like that in Africa." They paused, a random slip of knowledge reappearing in their mind. "I think there's even one in Europe? That I remember, at least. It's called... Luzembirg? Lexunberg?" Their turn to mess up words. Maybe it would make Alaric feel better about his.
