June stifled a yawn as she zipped through the sky. It wasn’t that she was bored, far from it in fact. A close look at her face would reveal the beginnings of dark circles under her eyes, signs of stress and fatigue. Perhaps June had too much on her plate?
Perhaps it would be worth it if they won?

So far, so good. Gray had been flying relatively safely throughout the race and didn't seem to have any problems with the obstacles that have come up. If they kept going the way they were, there was a good chance Slytherin were finally going to get this win in the bag once and for all. Going forth, Gray did just that as he came up against the dangerous bright lights.

BROOM RACING SLYTHERIN VS GRYFFINDOR SPRING 2023
The race was getting 'real' as the kids would put it. Spells were being slung, certain students were playing dirty and the cleverest among them were even getting away with it. Bobbing and weaving around other racers and dangerous obstacles, the racers would make their way towards the finish line. Neck and neck both Slytherin and Gryffindor would make the best of their rivalry with elbows being thrown and wands being brandished.
Only... something strange happened. The finish line did not look right, it was familiar enough. A cheering crowd, the Hogwarts grounds that every student riding a broom knew like the back or their hand by this point. It looked fine, it just was not getting closer. Or was it? Maybe it was getting further away. No, it was exactly where it belonged.
To either side, again it was 'right' but still wrong. As if there was a haze. No, not a haze, s0me sort of shadow. An echo of what really should have been there. And SPLAT.
One by one, the Hogwarts students would find themselves crashed into the trunks of trees, into the ground immediately below them, into ne another. The spectators would simply see a harrowing scene of chaos - students seemingly turning around abruptly and driving directly into an obstacle, into one another, veering off the track and into an obstacle that was not even a part of the course.
Professors, Heads of House and varied adult staff (unnamed to avoid godmodding) would be shocked by this strange and unintended turn of events. Not that broom racing as a 'gentle sport' but this incident would leave every student dazed and injured (also the Nurse's problem). Students (also unnamed) might feel compelled to dash towards the chaos, compelled to help a friends. They would be left staring off into space once they got close, there was something in the air it would seem. They would simply fall over, the harm to them minimal comparatively.
And from here, a rescue operation would be required.
It would be @Maya Galim, Professor of Muggle Studies whose quick thinking would allow a salvage operation. Windy Spell (Ventus) would push away the unseen, dire magical miasma. [Permission Granted for this godmod, permission granted to Maya to post in this thread and/or the spectator thread.] The effect would not be immediate, there was no visual indicator that this would even solve the issue, however after about a minute, the dazed students would recover. Those who ran into this unseen miasma whilst rising their broom at top speed, they would not be moving. Some potentially crushed beneath the weight of a part giant. Others suffering from varied traumatic injuries they did not and could not brace themselves for.
With no way to determine a winning house because there was no racer left standing, both were rewarded a win.

Records (in spoiler)For those racing, everything looks normal and fine, as if you are on the straight and narrow. Even when you crash, you would think you were riding your broom and flying towards the finish line. Even while greatly injured, there would be no recognition of pain or distress until the miasma is sent away, then you would find yourself on the ground, buried under another player and terribly injured if conscious at all.

This was going well. Really well. There was Starkey, leading the pack. Here it was, the moment all of June's training and research would pay off. All they needed to do was stay alive and afloat and they would win.
Tightening her grip on her Silver Arrow, June pushed forward, past the terrifyingly Giant Squid, maneuvering through its tentacles, her eyes on the finish line. They were going to win, they were actually going to win! June's hair whipped behind her, the sensation of the wind against her face boosting her spirit. She felt alive.
And then... Well, and then it seemed she had been on the ground for quite some time. To onlookers, June had been smiling emptily at the sky after having flown her broom into a nose-dive and crashing, tumbling to the side, her expression exuberant all the while.
The first thing June felt were her legs. A dazed look on her face, she propped herself upright, finding both her legs twisted in unnatural positions, her bone snapped in a couple of places on each side. Covered in scrapes and cuts, her racing uniform was now undoubtedly covered in grass stains and small patches of blood. June had never broken a bone before, much less seen one, and her complexion went visibly pale as she saw the state of her extremities.
What... happened?
June's head snapped up, bringing on a slight onslaught of dizziness and pain, looking around to find that she wasn't the only racer in such a state. Lowe, Alptraum, Ashwood, Gray, June tried to account for each racer... Yes, every single one of the athletes had found themselves in this strange position. June attempted to get herself up to check on her team, only to crumple to the ground in pain as soon as she put weight on her legs. Thank Merlin for magical healing, but it would be no small feat to make it to the hospital wing. If only there was someone watching who could help her...

"OWOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" Colin cried out as the course flew by below! Captain June and Vale and himself had caught up to the leaders at last. Unfortunately, so too did the Gryffindors! In such a tight pack as he found himself in, Colin felt no remorse in kicking and elbowing at any opponent who got close! And no one seemed to officially notice a technicallyp illegal incendio cast at a certain young Lion who totally deserved it for trying to blatch him earlier and who had the nerve to escape his mates' Parkins Pincher!
Colin narrowed his eyes as his spell zang off into the narrow space between him and Keith!
It was just ahead now, the finish line! Colin could scent the excitement of every racer! But --- wait. Colin blinked his eyes. He checked the other racers. Yeah, they were all moving! The ground whizzed by below. But still, the finish line --- it didn't seem to get any closer?
Colin blinked again. He felt woozy. It wasn't like the darkest night. He hadn't had any of that in a while, and it never made him woozy. That always made him feel more himself. No this felt different. As the finish line neared and got farther away, Colin found it! It was like that old bottle of apple juice he'd found from first year! Tangy stuff! It smelled kind of off, but, well, it sure tasted good. And that definitely made his head spin!
Colin laughed and dove towards the Gryffindork captain! They were so close, now! To each other and the finish line! If he could get her to tumble, she might take out a couple other racers to boot! He just hoped he could manage to keep dodging their attacks! This race had become so brutal! It was nothing like racing the Hufflepuffskeins! This was murder!
And then a curious scent came to Colin's nose. Woody, leaf mold. But they had passed all the trees already! The way was clear ahead! He could see the crowd of cheering kids around the finish line! He shook his head. His nose refused to smell anything other than a woodland!
Colin closed his eyes. Oh crap.
And then he felt it --- branches! Limbs! Colin was flying full speed into trees that weren't there, only they were there! His nose had warned him, but he relied on his eyes. He felt the sickening crunch of his body slamming full force into a broad trunk. His left shoulder and chest crashed first, and he could feel his ribs and clavicle move in ways they shouldn't be able to. His side felt warm from his blood oozing. A gash had opened up around a broken branch.
His broom was torn from his gloved hands, and his arms smashed into a huge limb. Colin fell. Something gave way in his hip. Something snapped. Bone or sinew, he didn't know. And he didn't care. The last thing he saw was the blue sky above, surrounded by the breaking rain clouds. The blue of Clair's eyes. If Colin died today, his last thought would be of his Eyes of Sky.
