When the first round of dueling had ended, the studious Slytherin was expecting to be booted from the team for his horrendous performance. Instead, here he was, moderating a duel of people older and more skilled than he was. He could only hope that the duel went smoothly. Or that he could step in properly when it inevitably didn’t.

Hui-Ming would stand straight and grim upon the stage, considering each of the duelists in turn. Dorion and Logan were known faces to him, and he had spent an inordinate amount of time researching. The Gryffindors were less known to him, though he knew that one of them frequented the dueling circuit for some time. The younger Gryffindor was entirely unfamiliar to him. A glaring oversight in his reconnaissance, and one that was too late to worry about that now.

“Everyone, welcome to the second stage of the Duelling Championships. Ela Veronica Bennet and Ivy Bellamy from Gryffindor facing off against Dorion Anderson and Logan Baird from Hufflepuff.” A look around at every duelist. “Cast hard, think fast, follow the rules and do your best. I look forward to running a clean match.”

The second year would incline his head, before slowly backing away from the center of the stage.

“You may begin!”

Truthfully, Dorion didn't expect to be participating in this stage. They had stepped down as captain to re-focus on their studies and personal identity, as well as reconnecting with friends that they had kind of lost track of because of how stressed they had been. It was a last minute addition, a panic for a duellist to fill the roster that had them re-join the team much earlier than anticipated. They didn't mind, they did love their team dearly. They stood once again with Logan against Ivy and Elsa. They remembered Ivy from a briefly weird conversation in a courtyard, but they hadn't really interacted since. Dori gave Logan an optimistic thumbs up before regarding one of the newest duelling moderators, their wand was poised as he started wrapping up his mini-speech. Dorion was determined to win this duel.

Nicky wasn't nervous at all when she walked up the stage to face their opponents together with her new partner. She had to admit though, switching partners this often was a bit unsettling. The girl also was worried about Ivy who was one of the newer additions to the team. She felt like the whole switch around thing could reflect bad on their team's consistency but she could only assume that everyone else was feeling the same way and move on.
She smiled at her partner and whispered:
"You got this".
Nicky watched the Hufflepuff team coming up to the stage as well. She hadn't really seen Logan since the previous year's valentine's dinner which was one of the most awkward memories of her life. So she simply brushed it off and focused on the duel. Ivy and her had to go for the win and make their team proud.

Logan was not prepared for this round of dueling in any way, shape, or form. She honestly did not understand why she was still doing dueling in the first place. Yes, her goal for joining dueling was to not win, but it was rather disappointing to almost never win a round. At least being one of the captains for the Hufflepuff racing team meant she got to celebrate wins a bit more often. Glancing over at her partner, Logan gave Dorian a weak smile. Maybe they actually had a chance this round. Quickly, the young Hufflepuff tightened the hair-tie in her fading pink hair. She needed to keep her hopes up, because she was not going to do well if she had already condemned them to failing.

Ivy returned Elsa's smile despite the fluttery feeling in her stomach. It was her first duel, and she couldn't help but feel a little nervous. "Thanks," she would whisper back, "you too!" Absentmindedly twirling her wand in her fingers, she watched the Hufflepuff team come onto the stage before turning her attention to the moderator. Ivy smiled at Elsa again before fixing her gaze on the opponents. She hoped she could make the team proud by winning today.

Almost as soon as the young Slytherin gave his okay to begin, the casting began a vengeance. What followed was every bit of the chaos Hui-Ming had expected.

Dorion moved first, perhaps being one of the most experienced of the duelists present. He cast a split-spell disarming charm; perhaps hoping for a quick advantage for his team. Unfortunately for him, both the lions were prepared for something along these lines and managed to evade handily. But it was not over as Logan, expertly using the distraction, took the opportunity to set the younger Gryffindor ablaze with a well-timed fire-making spell.

It was obvious that the badgers had been working before, and their teamwork showed in their timing and execution.

And then there were the Gryffindors.

Miss Bennet attempted to do something back at the Badgers. Instead of conjuring a strong wind as she might have expected, her spell backfired; buffeting her with a strong wind instead. A poor start. But was it just a hiccup along the way, or portends of bad things to come for the Crimson House?

Miss Bellamy was the least experienced out of the four duelists present, and she attempted the same spell as Miss Bennet. Fortunately for the Gryffindors, her spell succeeded, affecting Logain with a stern wind.

A small foothold overall. Would Gryffindors be able to capitalize on it, or had the initial setback been just too much and too soon?

"Oh, for god's sake," Ivy muttered under her breath. She didn't have the best memories of fire (cough cough spring ball of 2020) but right now all she could feel was annoyed at herself for not dodging it in time. Although her spell had successfully landed... well, she would take a win where she could get one, no matter how small.

Ugh, that was disappointing. The two Gryffindors seemed to dodge their spell like it was nothing. But! One of them failed their spell so hard it came back at them, and Logan's hit. Dori didn't take the time to congratulate her one of the first hits of the duel. There would be time after. Right now it was about laser focus.

Nicky was disappointed in herself and she didn't like how this was turning out. From the start, it looked like they were at a huge disadvantage. However, she didn't want to dwell on it too much because there was still plenty of time left to turn things around. She was confident in herself and in her partner.

Logan was honestly surprised that the very first spell she cast had actually done some damage. The girl had been awful at spell casting recently and she had begun to think there was something wrong with her. Apparently she as doing it to herself though, putting to much pressure and causing herself to fail. Glancing over at her partner, the Hufflepuff gave Dorian a nod of encouragement before turning back to the Gryffindor opponents.
