Cassie ducked out of the way of the white queen's attack, but still felt a pang of pain as she got caught in his aura. For a moment, she bent over, trying to catch her breath. It felt like her lungs were full of cement and she couldn't breathe but to cough.

Frustration would course through Cielle's body at Johannes' snarky comment, and she was overcome with the desire to throw something at the snide son of a bitch. She settled for brandishing her middle finger angrily across the board. [IN RUSSIAN] "Oh my god, just fuck OFF, Johannes!" Cielle snapped back. Perhaps it was her anger at his words that made her miss her shot at the French dude. Yefim's reassurance would do little to calm her down, but she took a few deep breaths to clear her head. It was crazy how short her temper could be sometimes.

Playing such a bizarre game of wizards chess for the sake of the Hexwizard tournament is not something Milo ever thought he would be getting himself into, but alas, here he was.

And so Cass witnessed their team's first casualty. Florian had been strong and made sure to stand his ground against Durmstrang. Sadly, 'taking one for the team' too many brought him down to rest on the cold black and white floor tiles. Cassanora huffed as she straightened herself. The game was cruel, and it was in fact cruel to call it a game. Children were getting hurt for entertainment, for sport. She contemplated all of their choices to be here on this day. Maybe there was some truth to her father's words.

Oh no, the opposite Durmstrang student - okay, maybe he should say those students, as generally speaking those big guys and pretty ladies were much slipperier than he had thought. Maxi grumbled with disappointment. Next time. Next time. He would do it.

Putting her magic to good use, Roberta shielded the person in front of her as best she could, hoping to save Milo from at least some of the dangers ahead of him. As Florian fell, however, all of the rage bottled up inside Roberta would begin to boil over spilling out of her eyes; mad like hell. That she couldn't take watching the onslaught anymore was an understatement, but Merlin willing she would avenge him as soon as she was able. There was honor in his sacrifice and there would be a price to pay for besmirching him. Unfortunately Roberta had gotten a bit lost in herself when she had become too heated to even question why they were even fighting so fearsomely in the first place.

Feeling more and more backed into a corner with each moment that passed them by, she looked to Cassanora only to see that she had been seriously injured. Amaury too. In fact almost everyone had taken a severe beating and that Roberta counted herself among the lucky few to have avoided danger so far was yet another irritant. [Muttered in French but at nobody in particular] Cowards. All of them. That they didn't have the courage to attack her even after being challenged spoke volumes of their character, that and the fact that Yefim had to be the biggest coward of them all. Playing from the sidelines, always just out of her reach. Gallivanting from his high horse while his team did all the dirty work for him.

It would only serve to infuriate her that much more. She was beginning to think that she might explode. So what! Their position wasn't looking too good anymore? To a Martin, that only meant she and the rest of the Beauxbatons students would have to fight even harder to make it out of this trial victorious. Instead of Roberta giving in to despair, Lysander would receive the ire she had locked away behind her wettened-steely gaze, yet her words would be directed elsewhere to her team. She would prove to be resolute in holding the line. Steadfast in supporting her friends. [In English] "For Florian!"

Johannes’ first opinion of his position in the current round: Fucking ow?? The second opinion, following very closely behind the first, was that their conversations weren’t as exclusive as they initially believed. Then again, they didn’t have much to hide, at least not in the verbal sense.

As their Immortal King echoed the Frenchman’s words, Johannes was almost flattered that this French ponce would bother learning enough Russian to try talking back to them. The key word here being ‘almost’, as he doubted that any amount of extracurricular effort would come close to even their most incompetent first years.

Drawing upon energy of obviously underpaid, undercaffeinated and bitter substitute schoolteachers, he took it upon himself to engage in his own bout of trash talking. ”Picked up a copy of Russian for Dummies, huh? Good for you.” Language barriers aside, anybody halfway paying attention to the game would be able to pick up the mocking tone of his backhanded remark. His initial impression - shaped by both Horntail bias and a recent copy of the local Headliner - was nut totally incorrect when he’d predicted the Beauxbatons team to be filled with a bunch of ice queens.

Rolling his shoulders experimentally from the strange strain of jumping around with a gigantic fucking book in hand, he couldn’t have been more thankful for Valentin’s endless support. Had he a hand free, he would be blaspheming his own ‘holy’ role and laying tribute to the enduring energy of the Horntail Horde.

The same couldn’t be said for his current interactions with his fellow chaos demon. “Surprised you can’t tell that to your damn cupboard-lover.” It seemed that Johannes was particularly mouthy today, for his immediate reaction towards Cielle’s aggressiveness was to further the argument. Unwilling to give up his quest of irritation, it was all in the name of negative inspiration. As for who this inspiration was supposed to help? Who knew.

During his next move, Lysander would act to even the tides. Namely, he strived to incapacitate the black Queen, Amaury, who had in such a short period earned a name for himself as an utter menace on the board. He was one to watch out for, Lysander noted, but of course, Beauxbatons would not let down their guard so easily. Despite having eyes for only one target in particular, Lysander’s shield bash found and demolished Florian instead, the other boy having planted himself in its path. A noble sacrifice, and only the beginning of the end for the French.

One second her target was there... and the next, he was gone. Again. Frustration was starting to rise within the Norwegian girl. Thus far, she had contributed exactly nothing to the fight, and had instead earned her team the loss of a valuable member for having to intercede and take an attack on her behalf. It was getting ridiculous. It wasn't even something she could easily shrug off anymore. For all the preparation they had done over the summer, all the drills and the strategizing... she was completely failing her team.

Perhaps Yefim's call of support should have helped. In any other situation, it would have. But now, it just compounded her embarrassment, heat rising to her face to colour it a deep red. Lips thinned, brows pinched, and the acutely observant might even have noticed the stamp of a foot as Florian moved deftly out of range. With a flare of nostrils, she turned a repentant look to their king—the real king, not the one currently filling the role of the king piece—and offered her silent apology. And then absorbed some of his resolve.

For all their losses, he hadn't yet given up. Still he stood there, proud and confident, defiantly facing down their opposition. He hadn't given up on them yet. What right did she have to waver in her resolve. Licking her lips, she offered him a nod and returned her gaze forward again, determination fighting to gain purchase on her countenance. "It's not over yet.."

Kings

Hide Away: The King must save himself, he hides behind an adjacent allied piece and takes half damage (the piece they are hiding behind also takes half damage). Damage is not healing or buffs, it is just damage. Evasion here would be a separate roll for both the King (for their half) and the piece that they are hiding behind. This action occurs during the action phase which is before the movement phase, but has priority (meaning it happens before attacks, so an attack may not be possible or may be redirected towards another piece that is now "in the way.") The space is chosen by the King and must be adjacent to an allied piece. If the space is occupied, there would be a contested strength check to determine who will remain in this space unless the adjacent piece is an ally in which case a contested check is not needed. This is action can be done in addition to the movement phase.

The two Kings, Cassanora Browne (@Hugh Lowe) and Valentin Schnell (@Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood) would both Hide Away. Cassanora would slide behind Cassie, likely just to make the moderator's job harder. Whereas Valentin would Hide Away near Yefim. Who was really protecting who in this situation? A true mystery in this scenario.

While Yefim and Valentin would remain unmolested by Beauxbatons, the same would not be able to be said of Cassanora and Cassie.

Valentin's throne was about to be uprooted as Roberta came barreling across the board. They were looking to take Greta's seat immediately behind Yefim.

Somehow Valentin found someone weaker than him. It was like the villain from the movie unbreakable when they fell out of their chair and broke all of their bones. Two of the most fragile pieces ever to err onto this board vying for the same spot. Valentin would be the winner, yes he beat a girl. Yes, he was probably proud. Yes, it was likely a one time incident.

Rooks

Rapid Defense: They defend another allied piece as their primary action. This action takes place before the movement phase and takes priority in the action phase over attacks made against a specified piece. Similar to defending in Quidditch where a user blocks an oncoming attack made by a specific target, attacks made against this piece would be relegated to this piece (regardless of the direction of attack). If another piece attempts to land in the space that the defender chose (a specific, declared space adjacent to the chosen target), a strength check is rolled. This piece has advantage on this roll. This action does not consume the pieces movement for the round, they can still move, but their movement is considered to be the last movement in the round according to the action stack.

The defenders would rush out. Lysander Stavrou (@Phaedra Stavrou), the dodge tank would move in front of Queen Felix. Nothing was doing to get through Lysander except for a spell spread. Felix and Lysander both would find themselves unharmed.

Milo Durand (@Delilah Stewart) would protect their Queen Amaury. The strange mirrored defenses and attacks made it apparent that both teams thought in a similar fashion. That victory might come down to luck and brawn more than brilliance or grit. Only, there was a difference -- Amaury would be the target of attack on two sides -- from cielle and Felix both.

Benediction: Using their Stamina they are able to bestow healing upon an allied target. Stamina x 20. The target must be adjacent and on a diagonal.

Invocation: Capable of blasting a target at a distance. This can move through allied (but not enemy) spaces on a diagonal. Arcane Power x 25.

Intercession: Using their Wisdom, they are able to shield a single target against an attack. The shielded target must be adjacent. They would protect the target for Wisdom x 10. This would take priority over any other attacks done. Remains on a target until it is exhausted. Can be maintained on more than one target. Does not stack.

Johannes cyprian sauer (@Astrea Soleil Neptune) needed to keep Yefim on his feet at the expense of everyone and everything else. Victory was the only option. He would incant a non-denominational prayer, invoking the mercy of his 'god.' He would attempt to bolster him wth a shield that would protect their champion from harm.

Roberta Martin (@Sylvain Wylt) was there to keep cassanora on her feet. She had taken some damages already, if they were not careful, Durmstrang would overwhelm them with a concentration of force. That was indeed what they were trying to do right now. However, a second wave would cut through them (spell spread) and both cassie and cassanora would be hit a second time.

Andre Alarie (@Alec Mason) was going to take whoever they can. They would look around and they would identify their target. They had a few to choose from, but honed in on cielle.

Johannes and Andre had their eye on the same point of the board (D2). It was a prime location along the backlines of the team. It was uncomfortably close to Yefim, the champion.

Yefim performs Eagle Eye on Milo (or target in range). Milo was out of range, no other target was in range.

Only the defensive line would only serve as a barrier between Yefim and any relevant target. He would make no attack.

cassie would do the near impossible, she would hit Lysander. He would be hit hard in fact, and pain to this extent was likely not something he was accustomed to. He was strong, agile and durable but the damages he had sustained were starting to add up. He still had some fight in him but they would need to end this fast, otherwise they were going to be fighting with one less shield.

Queens

Mistress' (or Master's) Wrath: A ranged attack that can go in any direction the Queen can move. It cannot move through allied/enemy squares. A blast of arcane energy can be felt across the board. Arcane Power x 50. However, this attack is done at disadvantage and can only target 1 target.

In an attack that could have devastated the Durmstrang Team, somehow Amaury missed all three of them as they hit the floor and let the wave of glittering light blast past them and disperse just after the edge of the board. That was a close call but every last one fo them was still on their feet.

Amaury and cielle would also vie for a coveted space on the board, near cassanora the Beauxbatons champion. Slowly the Durmstrang Team was moving the girl towards the corner of the board. Limiting her movement and converging on her from all sides. They would have to make an audacious move soon if they were to have any hope of taking home the win.
