Adelaide didn't know where she was going. She wasn't paying attention to anything, but she was pretty sure she'd accidentally crashed into a few unsuspecting victims in her haste to get as far away from the Great Hall as possible. It was as if she lost consciousness momentarily, her body moving on autopilot, and the next moment she regained consciousness, she was in the lavatory. How she had got to here from the Great Hall she didn't know, but she didn't care. Thank Merlin it was empty, at least.

She still couldn't breathe, and her exertion from running didn't help. Her chest was too tight, her clothes were too constricting and warm and itchy and uncomfortable and she really, really couldn't breathe. The tears weren't stopping, a never-ending flow of the salty liquid running down her cheeks, the only indication that she was actually feeling something right now. She was feeling too much, but yet nothing at all. She was numb, but not. She grabbed at her collar, trying desperately to get some air into her lungs, but it was pointless. There was something lodged in her throat, restricting her air flow and she was probably going to die in a goddamn bathroom.

"I- I can't," she could barely get any words out, the words sounding hoarse and unnatural to her. She didn't even know who she was talking to, she was talking to herself. But she didn't know what else to do right now. She was losing it. Probably losing her mind. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and Merlin she looked a mess. Felt it, too. What was happening right now?

This couldn't be real. The letter couldn't be real, it just couldn't be. Maybe it was a sick prank. Someone had forged her mother's handwriting and had written that sick letter. Deep down, she knew that was crazy, but she just couldn't bring herself to believe that her father was actually gone. She couldn't.

Everything was too much right now. The invisible weight of everything piling onto her so hard she couldn't help but fall to the ground. A choked sob left her mouth as her knees made contact with the floor. Her chest was so tight it felt as if her ribs were going to shatter. Her mind was a mess, she was a mess. Everything was a mess, and she couldn't decide whether she wanted to scream or cry.

It was the breakfast time on a normal Tuesday in Hogwarts, Dec 22nd. Exactly one day before the Christmas break, and it was another busy school day. After Rita had her breakfast, she decided to go to the Lavatory to comb her messy hair after a night`s sleep. Her hair was not that long, but there was a lot of them, so Rita had to use a hair band to tie up her hair in the back into a small ponytail so that the large amount of hair did not cause too much hassle to her, especially during the Quidditch training when there was a lot of sweat, and she had to constantly put her hair aside so that it did not cover her eyes, which was extremely uncomfortable. Now with the hair band to tie up with hair, it was at least somewhat more comfortable for Rita, since she did not have to constantly mess around with her hair for some comfort.

Anyway, she went into the lavatory, and saw a girl wearing Ravenclaw clothes clearly in a lot of trouble. Rita had seen the girl before in the great hall when the older Gryffindor @Ivy Bellamy was fainting on the floor, but she still did not know the girl`s name. However, the girl clearly needed help. Rita decided to walk closer to the poor Ravenclaw girl to see what happened to her.

When Rita walked closer to the poor Ravenclaw girl, she felt extremely bad for the poor girl. The girl was crying so hard and seemed to be out of breath. Rita did not know exactly how to help the poor Ravenclaw, but maybe she could give her some comfort by asking her if she needed Rita`s help.

"What happened to you, poor little bird? You looked pale and seemed to be out of breath. Do you need any help? Maybe a trip to Hospital Wing? Please don`t be mad at me, I am trying to help you!" Rita whispered to the poor Ravenclaw in a worrying voice and waited worriedly to see how the poor girl would response. Rita really did not know to help the poor Ravenclaw, even did not know what devastating thing happened to the poor girl, but she really wished she could at least give some comfort to the poor girl and hopefully she would be okay soon. The morning classes would start very soon, and she would miss class and be in bigger trouble if she continued to be in a mess like that.

Rita was just looking at the poor Ravenclaw in a worrying expression when she suddenly heard a familiar voice shouting her name in an angry voice. She looked up to see who was that mad at her. Surprisingly, it was her best friend, Lily! "Why is Lily here, and why is she so mad at me? It isn`t her who is in big distress! I do not do anything wrong, and I am really trying to help that poor Ravenclaw! I am not demanding to know all of her personal issues! Lily clearly gets me wrong! Anyway, I think I should apologize to her and try to stand from a distance to see what is going on but not getting involved in the situation! I really don`t want to make my best friend mad and break our friendship!"

"I`m very sorry, Lily, please try to calm down. I really don`t want to make you mad and break our friendship. You clearly get me wrong; I do not do anything wrong, I am just trying to help the poor Raven girl, and I`m not demanding her personal information. Though I have to admit my way of trying to help in problematic. From now on, I will just stand aside and watch, so that I will not get involved with the situation. It`s that OK, Lily! I really don`t want you to be mad at me, that does no good for both of us!" Rita responded to Lily in a calm, polite, and apologizing tone as she moved to the further side of the lavatory to stand slightly away from the whole situation to just watch without getting involved.

Cash was one of the few that saw what happened during the breakfast time at Great Hall. Just like clockwork, the soft hoot of owls bringing letter and other things that it needs to be delivered echoes throughout the Hall. When others received letters and self-care packages from its students' respective homes, Cash was enjoying their breakfast which consisted of simple scrambled eggs, some strips of bacon, and their comfort beverage which is a cup of Chamomile tea.

But during those quiet breakfast times, their green eyes were fixed on a girl seated at Ravenclaw's table. Once in a while, Cash glanced at the girl and watch her every move. Cash resumed their breakfast without any disturbance until they saw the Ravenclaw girl standing at her table and walked up to Gryffindor's table looking for someone.

Cash did not know why but their heart pulled and they saw the girl run out of the Hall and out of their sight. Usually, Cash did not care about what happened to other people but today was different. Before the girl run out of the Hall, Cash got a glimpse of the broken expression that the girl wears on her face.

With a sigh, Cash hurriedly finished their breakfast and followed where Adelaide was headed. Since Adelaide ran out of the Hall earlier than Cash, they did not know where the girl was headed but called it intuition or whatever, Cash decided to climb the many stairs and headed towards the Girl's Lavatory.

Once the fourth-year stood in front of the big wooden door, they took a deep breath to steady their beating heart and pushed open the door. Their green eyes were frantic looking for the broken and sad girl. When Cash stepped inside the room, it seems the Ravenclaw girl was not alone. Inside the Lavatory were Lily Blaze and Rita Su which whom Cash shared a club with then.

Su, as her usual self, started to send rapid questions to the distressed girl. And Blaze, being the Slytherin that she was, chided Su to give Barlowe some space. And during the process, she shouted. The Beater slowly stepped into the room and watch the girls in silence. Upon closer look, Cash remembered the blonde that was crumpled on the Lavatory's floor.

Cash had met Barlowe before. Well, the meeting is an understatement. The Cuban descendant never interact with Barlowe before but they remembered that Cash, Barlowe, Charlton, and Tone share a compartment on the way back to Hogwarts after Summer break was over. Barlowe is also the newest addition of staff for the Headliner.

Slowly but steadily, Cash walked further into the room. Their green eyes bounced from one person to the next. Cash's heart was shattered seeing the state that Barlowe was in. It reminded them of what happened to them a week before Summer when they were still in their first year. The devastated felt and looked that Cash tried to push it down but it will always be there no matter how hard they tried to ignore it.

"Guys!,"Cash addressed the second-year Hufflepuff and the first-year Slytherin. "Chill,"The Prefect spoke softly so Barlowe did not feel overwhelmed by the crowd that gathered around her. "Su, please respect the girl's grief,"Cash pointed to Su much gentler and softer than their Slytherin counterpart.

"We do not know what happened to her and I suggest let her come to her own terms and please do not bombard her with your questions,"Cash added some more. "I know you mean well, but still.."Cash deliberately hangs their words in the air as a non-verbal example for Su to follow. Cash's eyes then bounced to the other Slytherin girl.

"And for you Blaze, I know you got into the heat of the moment but your shouting was unnecessary,"The young Ironwoods reprimand the girl as softly as they could. The young socialite then walked towards Barlowe and seated next to her but still gives the girl an amount of respectable distance between them.

"Hey, Barlowe! I am not going to ask if you okay but I had been where you are right now,"Cash spoke softly to the blonde girl. Cash then rested their head against the Lavatory's wall and looked at the ceiling. The feeling of brokenness, emptiness, and sadness comes crashing down and it is plain to see.

"If you want me or us to go, just tell us and we will. If not, those two and I will wait until you opened up to us. We will wait patiently and respectively, right girls?"Cash said to both Blaze and Su with a glare daring them to not say anything but yes.

Rita was still paying a watch to the whole situation when someone familiar walked into the girl`s lavatory. The usual Slytherin robe with the prefect badge, being taller than her with the light brown hair, it could be no one else but the fourth year Slytherin prefect, Cash, who always seemed very harsh, and it seemed to Rita that every time the Slytherin prefect entered the room, they would give a trouble younger year detention. Rita was clearly afraid of Cash since Rita had an adventurous Lion heart despite being a little badger and wanted to break some school rules but is afraid of receiving detentions. She did want to sacrifice her precious break time on writing endless lines or doing dull cleaning work when she could play outdoor sports, meet up with new people and old friends, and participating in many interesting activities and events.

This time, however, it seemed that the usually harsh Slytherin prefect approached her and Lily gently and softly. Maybe they were just mad when young wizards break the school rules and deserved to learn a lesson, which was clearly understandable as a prefect`s responsibility. "I`m sorry, prefect Cash, I shouldn`t bombard the poor Ravenclaw who was clearly in a great distress, that would not help with the situation. I said I will stay a little away from the whole situation, stand from a distance to watch the whole thing, and wait to see the poor Ravenclaw`s reaction before I leave the girl`s lavatory to go to my morning lessons." Rita apologized and nodded to the Slytherin prefect to show her agreement of their words. Since she was standing from a distance, she raised her voice slightly, but clearly was not shouting. "Let me just stand here, and wait to see how the poor Ravenclaw react to the three of us coming to comfort her, hopefully she won`t be mad at the three of us and tell us all to go away! But it`s her choice, we can`t force her!" Rita thought as she waited to see the poor Ravenclaw`s reaction.

Footsteps. Someone had walked into the lavatory. She didn't look at who it was, could barely manage to move her head. It took too much energy, so she kept her gaze trained on a specific spot on the floor. Even if it kept moving in and out of focus, even if she was still struggling to breathe, even if her tears still blurred her vision. The girl started talking to her, but it was going in one ear and out the other. She only picked up pieces. Leave me alone, leave me alone, leavemealone. If she was in her right mind right now, Adelaide probably would've had a few things to say about what she'd heard the unknown figure say. 'Poor little bird'? Really? What was their goal here? To taunt her?

Leave me alone. Of course things could get worse. More footsteps entered the lavatory, followed by someone shouting. Adelaide flinched, able to move her hands up to cover her ears as her gaze stayed stuck on that one piece of tiled floor. Too much. Everything was too much right now. Did they really need to shout? Make it stop. Breaths were entering her lungs in short gasps as she tried her hardest to just breathe. Why was breathing so hard all of a sudden? She didn't bother replying to the two unknown figures, didn't even bother looking to see who it was. She couldn't get words out. They just wouldn't come.

Another person entered then, and it was all getting too much. All she wanted was the ground to swallow her up right now, so she didn't have to deal with this. Didn't have to deal with today. Maybe she could use a time turner, turn back time and fix this so today wouldn't happen. So nothing that would've caused that dreadful letter would've happened. A small part of her brain vaguely realized that she no longer had said letter with her. It wasn't clenched in her fist anymore. Where did she last have it? She couldn't remember, for all she knew, it was probably lying on the floor of a corridor somewhere.

The person that had entered recently appeared to be reprimanding the two people. She could finally find the strength to raise her head slightly to see who it was. She recognized two of them from the day Ivy had fainted in the Great Hall. Huh, small world. She couldn't recall their names. The other person she recognized as Cash. They had shared a compartment on the way to Hogwarts, and they were also a part of the Headliner staff, which Adelaide was the newest addition to. While she could thank Cash for reprimanding the two girls, she wanted all of them to just go. She needed someone she actually knew well, and trusted. Like Ivy, or Esme, or even her sister, just anyone that could save her from this hell.

Adelaide was too preoccupied with trying to get short breaths of air into her lungs that she couldn't respond to any of them. She just shook her head as vehemently as she could, her hands still covering her ears as she turned her gaze back to the floor.

With Christmas only a few days away, Ivy's emotions were running high. The anniversary of her younger sister's death was drawing near, and with Lillian's death only a few months ago, Ivy had no idea how she was supposed to survive the Christmas holidays.

That morning, she was at breakfast with Eloise Barlowe, both girls eating their food in comfortable silence. Ivy often found being friends with both of the Barlowe girls was a little tricky, as they didn't seem to like each other very much, but so long as she hung out with them separately, there wasn't an issue. She watched as Eloise received a letter and glanced up at the owls flying overhead to see if there was anything heading in her direction. Nope, nothing but her Transfiguration Today magazine. With a restless sigh, Ivy picked it up and flicked through the pages. When she looked up at her friend once again, she was startled to see tears in the usually lively girl's eyes. "Ella, are you alright?" Ivy asked, alarmed. When the girl didn't respond, she spoke again, her voice sharp with concern and panic. "Eloise! What's wrong?"

Ivy turned her head to follow the girl's gaze, just in time to spot Adelaide fleeing from the Great Hall. "What's going on?" Dread pooled in her stomach and she swallowed the sick feeling in the back of her throat. She was all too familiar with the look on her friend's face right now. "Ella. Is everything ok?" Ivy wasn't sure why she asked that question. Even though Eloise was yet to respond, she was pretty sure she knew the answer.

Five minutes later, she and Eloise were rushing through the corridors to find Adelaide. Ivy hadn't known Sebastian Barlowe all that well, as he'd always seemed to be away for business in Romania during her playdates with the Barlowe sisters, but he'd always been kind to her whenever they'd spoken, and furthermore, he had seemed like a wonderful father to his daughters. Adelaide certainly seemed to idolise him. Ivy's heart was breaking for her two friends, and with her own personal losses still so fresh, she was even more devastated that they would now have to experience exactly what she felt everyday. As Ivy and Eloise passed each room, they would open it to check if Adelaide was in it. Clearly, Adelaide had gotten much further than they both expected. All Ivy wanted to do was find her sister friend and make sure that both sisters were together and safe.

By the time they reached the fourth floor, Ivy was about to give up and just find Adelaide later. But checking out the bathrooms paid off. As Ivy and Eloise entered, the first thing she noticed was Adelaide, sitting on the bathroom floor and crying her eyes out. She would hardly spare a glance for the others in the room, instead making a beeline for Adelaide and crouching down in front of her. "Adelaide. Breathe." It was not her first time bringing someone down from a panic attack in the bathroom. Despite Ivy's inner turmoil, her voice came out surprisingly calm. She would shuffle around awkwardly to sit next to Adelaide and pull her into a side hug. "I'm so, so sorry," the Gryffindor said quietly. "But you can't stay here, yeah?" She looked up at the two first years and Slytherin prefect. Even if they did leave and give Adelaide and Eloise some privacy, the girls' bathroom was hardly the most ideal or comfortable place to be sitting and crying in. "We'll go when you're ready. Take your time."

Time moved slowly when you were in the dumps or whatever dark places Barlowe was in. Cash wanted to say more to comfort the distraught girl but Cash hardly know Barlowe except both students are Headliner staffs. The green eyes felt like their backside going numb so with one silent gaze, Cash looked at Barlowe.

They felt sorry for the girl but Cash could not do much for the other girl. With a sigh, Cash gets up from their position. There were still some discussions between Blaze and Su which Cash did not put too much mind into their discussion until Su addressed them with 'Prefect Cash'. The sound alone is foreign to Cash. Sure, they are Prefect but the way Su said it, it almost makes Cash cringe.

Cash was not that power-hungry. "No harm done,"Cash said to the young Hufflepuff. "As I said, you mean well,"The green eyes reassured the young girl. And when Cash said to both Blaze and Su to respect Barlowe's space, even though Su did not reply, at least Blaze did. Cash nodded at the girl. The atmosphere wafting in the air was heartbroken and sad. Cash could not take it anymore.

Somehow it reminded them of their own despair and misery. They need to get out of the room. With one last glance, Cash looked at Barlowe. And they throw a glance from Blaze to Su as a way not to spook the distraught girl anymore. The Quidditch player then walked up to the big and heavy wooden door.

Their face almost got hit by the door when someone swung the door open. "Oi! Watch where you go-,"Whatever Cash wanted to say was fell on deaf ears when two girls entered the room. One of them Cash knew it once upon a time. Back then Cash and Bellamy were friends. And right now, Cash did not know where they stood with the Gryffindor girl.

Bellamy made a straight beeline towards where Barlowe crumpled on the floor. Cash paid attention for a bit to what Ivy did to Barlowe but could not make out what the Gryffindor girl said to her distressed friend. They know that they are not wanted anymore. And looks like, from their point of view, Bellamy got Barlowe so Cash will leave them to it.

Then Cash remembered before this happened, Barlowe holding a piece of paper. With the state the blonde girl was in, Cash was betting the letter was somewhere out there. I need to find it fast before someone else beat me to it Cash thought internally. "I going to clear out now,"Cash said to no one in particular hoping one of them heard them.

But if not, they were not going to get offended by it. "And Barlowe, I will help you find your letter,"Cash stated to Barlowe not sure if she heard them or not. "When I do find your letter, I will bring it back to you and will not look into it"The fourth year said as an unspoken promise. The Cuban descent then shot a glance at both Blaze and Su.

"I think Bellamy got her covered, girls. I suggest you get on with your morning classes,"They said as a final note. With that being said, Cash pushed the door open and left the room.

Rita was watching what was going on carefully from a distance when she noticed the Ravenclaw girl covered her head using her ears, the older Gryffindor girl she saw fainting unconsciously on the ground in the great hall the other day but did not know the girl`s name entered the lavatory and began to comfort the poor Ravenclaw crying on the ground in a mess, and Cash promised to help Barlowe, probably the Ravenclaw`s name, find the mysterious letter Rita did not know about, maybe only Cash and the Ravenclaw girl knew about, instructed the other girls to leave the room as Bellamy, probably the name of the older Gryffindor would help cover the situation, and also left the room themselves. Since it seems that there was nothing Rita could do to help cope with the situation, she decided to leave the lavatory since the morning lessons would begin very soon, and Rita did not want to be late or miss the classes, which may result in the professor scolding her or landing her in detention.

"Anyway, I think Cash is right, I gotta go now. I don`t wanna be late for the morning class or worse, miss the classes, else the professor would probably be mad at me and land me in detention. See all of you three girls later and hope you all the best in coping with this situation and hopefully won`t be late or miss your morning lessons while dealing with the situation well." Rita said the older Gryffindor girl, the poor Ravenclaw girl, as well as her best friend Lily that were remining in the girl`s lavatory, and quickly ran away from the messy lavatory to attend her morning lessons, wishing the remining three girls all the best as she was leaving the lavatory and quickly heading upstairs to the classroom for the morning classes. Hopefully, they would cope with the situation successfully, and leave the lavatory very soon, since it was real that the classes would start very soon.

She really couldn't handle anyone else entering right now. She couldn't. When she heard footsteps enter the lavatory again, she was seconds away from screaming, until she recognized the voice. Ivy. And... her sister. Merlin. She'd forgotten about Eloise, even though the older girl was going through the exact same thing Adelaide was. She gratefully accepted the feeling of Ivy's arm wrapping around her. Through blurry eyes and with every ounce of energy she had left in her, she lifted her head up to spot her sister.

Eloise crouched down, taking one of Adelaide's hands in hers. "It's okay," her voice cracked when she said it, and Adelaide knew she was holding back tears, trying to be strong for her younger sister. It made Adelaide cry harder. They didn't deserve this. No one deserved this. She tried to follow Ivy's instructions to breathe, tried to get her breathing under control, but it seemed nearly impossible. Her chest was too tight, and it kept tightening with each passing second. She knew Ivy had lost people too, her sisters. She'd been in this position before, and it was unfair that now she had to comfort Adelaide when she likely wasn't even over her own losses.

The other three people in the room left after Ivy ushered them out. Adelaide was so grateful for her right now. She spared a glance at Cash, thankful that the Prefect had came in and stopped those two girls from fighting when Adelaide was on the brink of losing her mind. Maybe she should thank them later, if she had the effort, or if she even remembered. Merlin knows how she'd be later on. Life doesn't seem possible right now. How could time just move on normally? As if her entire world didn't just get destroyed? Classes didn't even seem important anymore, and she didn't care about the repercussions of missing them. She didn't care about anything anymore.

Everything felt surreal right now, and Ivy's words sounded muffled to her ears, as if she was floating outside of her body, looking down at the scene and not really experiencing it. Maybe this all really was a horrible nightmare, and she'd wake up safe and sound in her dorm, if not a bit traumatized. Oh, what she'd give right now for that to be true. "He's gone," she croaked out, and it sounded like a wail because the tears just wouldn't stop coming and her throat was starting to hurt and she felt so, so sick. But at least she could breathe enough to get some words out now.

Eloise squeezed her hand, "We're... we're going to be okay. It's going to be okay, Addie." They both knew that wasn't true. She also vaguely realized that that was the first time Eloise had ever called her a nickname that wasn't meant to be insulting. She'd never really, truly hated her sister, they just never seemed to get along, and it was so unfair that this was the thing to bring them together. The universe was cruel. Adelaide knew Ivy was right, she couldn't stay here forever, but she didn't have the strength to move. She didn't want to do anything anymore.
