Sorting Ceremony Sept 2022

It was Jonathan's turn to be sorted. He didn't have a particular preference. He was just happy to be included. He stepped up and sat down on the stool. The sorting hat was placed upon his head and like countless others it slipped down over his eyes and ears. He could hear it talking to him, thinking out loud as it where. Working out were to place him. It seemed to be deciding between two houses. Oh yes one of those two Jonthan thought. I would love to follow in the footsteps of one of my parents. Then in an instant it was decided,

"Hufflepuff!"

Shouted the sorting hat. Jonathan felt the hat being removed. He smiled big and jumped down from the stool. He made his way to the Hufflepuff table full of fellow students clapping and cheering for him. He nestled himself between two other students and immediately started filling his plate. He was starving and never had he seen so much food in his life. There was every kind of meat and every kind of dessert. Jonathan particularly liked the pumpkin pasties. He ate quite well and enjoyed stuffing his face while the rest of the sorting commenced.

To say Klaus Fernsby was anxious would be an understatement. The usually dreamy boy was clenching his hands tight, his foot tapping the floor, and his breath coming fast and shallow. He watched as student after student were Sorted, all seeming cheery. All seeming pleased with the decisions the old Hat gave them. Of course, Klaus was going to be a Ravenclaw, just like his father. His father was a renowned anthropologist, studying magical artifacts in many different countries and curating several museums in England. Yes, of course. His mother was a Ravenclaw, too, though her thirst for knowledge was in the musical sense–the Fernsby manor was full of different instruments from different cultures: guitars from Argentina, kotos from Japan, and his favorite, harps from Egypt. Yes. He was confident he would join the Ravenclaw ranks of his parents, because, he, too, loved learning. Klaus felt a little more calm when his name was finally called. He trotted over to the stool that the last student had left and sat down. The heavy old Hat was placed on his head at once.

The Hat was perched on his tawny hair, forcing his bangs into his eyes. I see a lot of desire here... The Hat said, ominously. Klaus closed his eyes and thought of Ravenclaw. No, I don't quite think so. Better be...

"SLYTHERIN!"

Klaus felt he would be sick. The Hat was lifted off of his head, and he blinked as his eyes re-adjusted to the warm candlelight of the Great Hall. The Slytherin table looked inviting as they cheered and hoorayed, but that same feeling of nervousness pervaded him. He walked over to the Slytherin table as some of the other students made room for him. Then, looking around, he didn't feel so unlucky. The other students were friendly. He offered back a tentative smile as he watched the remainder of the ceremony.

The feast was fine, it almost soothed his turning stomach. He joined his cohort of other Slytherin first years as they followed a Prefect on their way to the Common Room. His new home.

Gwyn was exhausted, but she was an expert at hiding it.

Hours and hours of toiling away at her desk, copying the books of the family library onto ordinary parchment was far more exhausting than a train ride and a trip to a castle, so covering her exhaustion with a careful display of calm was quite simple for the girl.

It also helped that she was far too nervous to be focused on her exhaustion.

At the sound of 'Bwye, Guinevere,' she reluctantly approached the stool and eyed the Sorting Hat apprehensively. She wasn't the first to be sorted, so she knew vaguely what to expect from the outside, but now that the hat was being held above her head, she felt absolutely terrified.

The hat rested on her head and made her feel so terribly small. She tried not to think about the fact that the next seven years of her life were contingent upon the hat sorting her into a suitable house. What even was a suitable house for someone like her?

Gryffindor? She certainly wasn't courageous or bold. No more than any other student, anyway. She'd only ever stood up to her mother twice in her life. But did that mean those two moments were any less meaningful? And she was prideful. It was basically a requirement in her family to have some degree of pride.

Hufflepuff? She certainly wanted friends, and she considered herself immensely loyal to the one friend she had back home. It would certainly be fitting.

Slytherin? She wasn't very ambitious, but she could certainly see herself as cunning. She'd often made plans back home for ways to break her mother's rules and not get caught. Even if she'd never attempted them, planning them had to count for something, right?

Ravenclaw? She only studied heavily because she was forced to by Mother. It wasn't that she had a passion for learning or knowledge. Surely she didn't belong there, did she? She was quite clever, on the other hand...

Which house would make her mother the happiest?

Mother was a Gryffindor, right? If Gwyn could be sorted into the same house, perhaps her mother would be proud of her? Perhaps she may even become a bit more lenient as a result?

A voice echoed in her head, and she recognized the voice as that of the hat from its announcements of the other students' houses.

So eager to please your mother, but what do you want?

What did Gwyn want? She honestly didn't know. She'd spent her entire life just trying to avoid the ire of her strict mother.

Hogwarts was a chance to crawl out from under her mother's thumb, though. Why was she so preoccupied on making her mother happy when it was her life that was being affected here?

Did she want to become a popular girl with a million friends? Maybe.

Did she want to read every single book in the library? Sure, it was possible.

Did she want to learn to stand against all of the evil of the world with her want in her hand? That certainly sounded exciting.

Did she want to rise the ranks and eventually become the greatest witch to ever live? It was a possibility.

That was when it dawned on Gwyn. It didn't matter that she didn't know what she wanted. What mattered was that it was her choice to make. For once, it was her life, and not simply an extension of her mother's. She could do whatever she wanted, and that was what she wanted to do. Whatever she wanted.

Ah. There's the ambition.

The Hat spoke once more, aloud.

"Slytherin!"

Gwyn stood from the stool as soon as the hat was removed from her head. She shot a grateful nod to that hat, unsure if it even knew that she'd done so. Thanks to it, her heart was now filled with a desire and drive that she'd never felt so strongly. The desire for freedom.

She didn't care if it took one week or if it took seven years, Gwyn would make her life her own, one step at a time.

Beginning with a step toward the Slytherin table.

In comparison to the small town Ciel lived in- the Great Hall was much too loud.
There must've been a few hundred students around, all eager to see her and her peers. Standing tall was the headmaster (his face was rather frightening,) holding a very wiggly hat, and she could even spot a few teachers sat around a table. These were the adults in charge of keeping a whole bunch of 'wizards' and 'witches' in check? Oh boy.
When her mother had told her about her little 'abilities', Ciel really couldn't believe it. Well, yes, that toy chicken doesn't normally grow four sizes- but weird stuff happens all the time! In her small little town, you just shrugged off the weird stuff. At least that's what her mum always told her.
The Sorting Hat looked old. Yes, that was all Ciel could really say. It would definitely look much cooler if it were a cowboy hat- ooh! just like the one she owned at home. Did she pack that before she left? Oh golly, now her thoughts were really running rampant. This ceremony seemed like it would drag on and on and having a last name that started with the letter 'S' really didn't help her long wait.
Eventually though, as more and more of her peers were called forward, the crowd loosened, and the shouting tables got quieter. Maybe they were just as hungry as Ciel was getting. Did this ceremony really ever end-?
"Saskia, Ciel."
Golly! That was her name! Ciel pushed forward the remaining students and stumbled up the stairs. She really couldn't stand the way the whole hall was staring at her, anxious to see what house she would be in. Oh yeah. Houses. She had completely forgotten about that part of this whole school.
The headmaster placed the wiggly hat on her head, and immediately a voice entered her ears. The sensation was weird enough for her to give a small flinch.
"Oh my," it started, the voice was crispy. "you're not the brightest of the bunch, are you-?"
"Don't be mean!"
"-yes, but I sense the utmost kindness in your heart. There are so many places to choose, which one would be right for you?" The hat spoke on for another moment or so, before giving a rather dramatic pause. Talk about thriller.
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
The sudden shouts coming from a particularly yellow-clad table made Ciel think that, perhaps that was the table- her table. The soggy old hat was removed from her head, and she hastily made her way down.
A few of the older students congratulated her, and she gave a small nod. At least the hat didn't bring up the chickens. Anything but the chickens.

do not attempt this at home, ciel is a professional cowboy!

Luma signed softly as she waited for her name to be called. The anticipation was so bad she practically buzzed with it. Finally, after what felt like forever, a voice rang out with her name.

Hurring through the swarm of students, Luma felt her stomach flip. Murmuring apologies as she pushed her was through, she approached the chair. All eyes were on her as the hat was settled on her head.

A strange voice spoke from above her "hmm, interesting.. maybe... no, lets see." Luma fought the urge to squirm. The voice spoke again "hmm loyal... yes I know, you would be perfect in.." There was a long pause "Hufflepuff!" The word range through the room.

Luma blinked in surprise, Hufflepuff? She hadn't been expecting that. Her family mostly consisted of Gryffindors and Slytherins so she had assumed she'd also be one of those. As she stood and moved to the Hufflepuff table, she wondered why she was chosen for that house. Not that she had any issue with being in Hufflepuff, it had just come as a surprise. She was loyal, yes, but she always thought she had more characteristics from Slytherin or maybe even Ravenclaw. Well, no matter, she was just happy to be here at Hogwarts and if anyone know her better than she knew herself, it was the Sorting Hat.

Sitting at the table, she was greated with smiles, cheers and friendly introductions. She grinned and chatted with her fellow first years as well as the older students. Yes, she would fit in as a Hufflepuff, the Sorting Hat was right. The only real problem with the situation is that it meant her older brother had been right too. Luma sighed, she'd never hear the end of it.

The big group of first years were ushered up to the front of the great hall where we all just stood and waited for our names to be called. The great hall was loud, filled with friends catching up. The first years were relatively quiet, but there were a few people whispering. The head master stood up and most of the voices stopped. The head master, a very tall man wearing armor began the ceremony. He talked about the process and introduced the heads of houses. I want Hufflepuff. It’s the house my mum was in and my dad was a Ravenclaw. I fit best in Hufflepuff. I thought to myself. Suddenly the head master pulled a roll of parchment out of his waist. He unrolled it and it was a LONG list. The parchment hit the floor and rolled several feet away. Wow. I thought.

Suddenly the sorting hat began to sing. It was a lovely song and when it ended, people began to clap, so I clapped to. The headmaster began reading off the names of people who were going to be sorted. J was the tenth letter of the alphabet, so there were some people ahead of me, but not many. Finally when we finished the I’s, my name was called.

“Jacobsen, Charlie.” He called. I pushed my way through and plopped down on the stool. The sorting hat talked about how I could go in to Hufflepuff, I was kinda loyal, but also brave. Finally it called out…

“RAVENCLAW!!” What? The Ravenclaw table exploded in applause and I took off the hat and set it on the stool. I stumbled over to the Ravenclaw table and plopped down on the end of the bench. What just happened there? I’m… a… Ravenclaw? Well at least it’s not the worst house. I shook the negative thoughts out of my head and turned to the sorting.

My friend Ava Winchet, a first year who grew up with muggles, was one of the last people to be sorted. The headmaster called her name and she plopped down on the stool, nervous and exited. “SLYTHERIN!” the sorting hat screamed. A loud cheer erupted from the Slytherin table as Ava walked over there. What! But Ava’s a Ravenclaw! and with that, the sorting was over.

Excited to finally start her journey at Hogwarts after hearing of her brother's stories about the wondrous school, Juliette was one of the first people off the train. After all the first years had been gathered in the Great Hall, Juliette tapped her foot impatiently, staring out at the sea of faces, some looking at the incoming students with interest while others couldn't be bothered to pay attention to the Ceremony that was about to begin.

Seeing that her last name was Sinclaire, Juliette knew she was going to be near the end of the list of students called to be Sorted. As she waited she studied each table stretched along the length of the Great Hall, mentally assigning names to each of them. Red and gold was for Gryffindor, Blue and Silver for Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff was yellow and black, and last but not least was the Slytherins, decked out in green and silver.

Scanning the Slytherins, Juliette spotted her brother and gave him a wave, to which he gave a supporting smile back. She just knew she would join him with the snakes, there was no doubt about it. Her family had been in Slytherin for generations and she was confident in her skills to place her there as well. She just needed the hat to be placed on her head first.

Quickly growing bored as students were called up and placed into one of the four Houses, Juliette busied herself with trying to place as many Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans into the hood of the robes of the person in front of her. She had a left over carton from the train ride there and figured this was better than eating them. So far, she was able to make fourteen in with a couple close calls.

She lost track of who had been called up so when she heard, "Sinclaire, Juliette," she nearly dropped the almost empty carton of beans, quickly stuffing them into a pocket of her robes as she made her way to the stool.

Sitting down with her back straight, Juliette pasted on a smug grin as the hat was placed on top of her head. She would finally have this ordeal over with and could go join her brother, enjoying the rest of the feast. However, she stalled in surprise as the hat didn't scream out Slytherin right away.

What's taking so long? She huffed to herself as she heard the hat chuckle.

"So impatient, yet so strongly opinionated," The hat hummed in amusement.

"Cause I have the guts to know what I want," She shot back, trying to convince the hat of where she should already be.

The hat didn't respond, causing her to grow more impatient. Looking out at the older students, Juliette could see them getting restless in the lack of response from the hat. Atticus, her brother, began to look nervous, chewing on his bottom lip, worrying Juliette.

"What's your problem? Decide already," Juliette spat out.

The hat responded this time, "Yes with that boldness, I know exactly where to put you. You're unafraid to say what you want or go for your goals."

Juliette felt her heart drop to her stomach as the hat's decision dawned on her, anticipating its conclusion with dread.

"Yes yes, better be... GRYFFINDOR!"

The Gryffindor table erupted into cheers as Juliette stood up with shaky legs, her face burning red. She had the urge to scream at the hat that it was wrong but knew that would only solidify its case. She begrudgingly join the table in red and gold, receiving pats on the back and congratulations.

Wanting to tell all of the Gryffindors to shove off, she held her tongue, taking an empty seat at the table. She refused to speak to any of them, instead focusing on the food that soon appeared after the last person was sorted. She didn't need to make friends, as long as she kept up her appearances, which meant not throwing a tantrum about her House. She was a Sinclaire, untouched and unbothered.

How could this have happened? What were her parents going to say? What about her brother? Thoughts swirled around her brain for the rest of the feast as she stood strong against the burning impulse to throw her food at the delighted Gryffindors around her and join Atticus with the Slytherins.

The great Sorting Ceremony was quite a spine-tingling event to many people including Agnes Boyle. Agnes Boyle was about to be sorted into her house! She was so nervous yet excited. She was attending Hogwarts, the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! The school her father attended when he was her age. Agnes was very determined to be just like her father, maybe even better. She remembered the stories he would tell her about his school days whenever he was free of work. Hogwarts was a wonderful school that provided great education to many famous and powerful wizards in the world!

While waiting for her name to be called she took this chance to observe the Great Hall and its endless beauty. She noticed the ever-changing ceiling of the hall. It was a dark shade of violet, adorned with white shining stars. Then out of nowhere, Agnes hears a loud scratchy voice call out her name Boyle, Agnes!
At that moment, Agnes froze. She wasn't ready for all this attention! The voice called out her name again Boyle, Agnes?
Snapping back into her senses, she quickly stood up and scurried to the stool, trying not to cry from hearing sinister chuckles from snotty-nosed girls. She took a seat on the stool, crossed her legs, and stared at the ground.
What seems to be the problem, girlie?" Agnes's eyes widened as she heard the voice for the third time, realizing it was the hat. She replied with a whisper"Just a bit nervous and embarrassed." Well don't worry, I'll put you in a house that'll most definitely brighten up your day!"
The Sorting Hat began muttering words in a low raspy tone Brave...determined...daring. I've got the perfect house for you!" Agnes listened closely due to her eagerness. Gryffindor!
A large round of applause began to spread across the Gryffindor table. Agnes was ecstatic! She was now in the same house her father was in!
Before walking to the Gryffindor table, she whispered to the Sorting Hat Thank you. The hat replied with a wink and a grin. Things seemed as if they couldn't get better!

Sorting Through

The room was grand to say the least... Edward found the whole event spectacular! Edward had already met so many interesting and fantastic people! Though some more unfortunate than others. The whole experience had been breathtaking! Edward wasn't sure how much more he could take before he suffered from a heart-attack. All in one day, he had shopped in Die-again alley, drank hot chocolate at the leaky cauldron, then he had a run down with a boy at 9 and 3/4, then finally he boarded the Hogwarts Express where he met a cool girl... Every second had been something different and new. Based on what he heard from the students conversations whilst they rowed across the great lake, was that all the first-years would be sorted into one of the four houses.... Edward believed them to be called Sly there in, Huff Puff, Griffin For, and finally Raven's claw. Odd names, Edward has thought. He saw a strong older man with pepper and salt hair with a large armor chest plate. He announced himself as the Headmaster of Hogwarts and began reading the long list of students' names so that they may be sorted.... The student would go up, sit in a chair, they would place a hat on top their head, and the hat would shout on of the houses names before the student would get up and go to the cheering table. Simple enough! Edward had been standing for a long while now, his legs were aching and he was growing more tired but he stood firm and strong awaiting his name to be called...
"EDWARD EDWARDS!" The man yelled loudly for all to hear. There were a couple small laughs, here and there. Edward didn't understand why, he didn't know that they were laughing at his odd name. Edward strutted over to the chair with a huge, almost Looney look on his face, it completely revealed the small gap in between his two large front teeth, strange yet charming. He sat down in the chair as they set the howling hat on top of his head of shoulder-length brunette hair.
"Hello!" Edward said to the hat, he had never seen an alive inanimate object before. It was quite exciting, he wondered if they could be friends? Edward had been thinking about so many things, his mind a jumbled mess of thoughts that he didn't notice the hat mumbling, struggling to find out what house to put him in... Finally he shouted for all to hear.
"Hufflepuff!"
Edward smiled stupidly as a table cheered, he guessed the table with the yellow bear was Huff Puff he walked over not caring what anyone thought or did. He was happy and that was all that mattered...

Some people just need a high-five... In the face ... With a chair...

Skye sat packed in with the first years, specifically in between two boys who were about her height. For some reason she became nervous again even after hearing the joyous cheers of the crowds when a new student gets sorted into their house. Eventually a lot names were called and she felt the tension boiling within herself, as she felt she could wait any longer. Then as if her wish had been granted…

“Morrow, Skye!” Her name was called and she froze for just a second, but a friendly pat on the back sprung her into action. As she sat on the stool she tried not to look at anyone and just stared straight forward. Then when the Hat was placed on her head she took a deep breath that the Hat imitated. “Ah, yes. Skye, Skye Morrow. Your parents are Muggles. Nothing wrong with that of course! Now, I sense you’re a smart young girl. And you want to do great things, right?” To that Skye didn’t respond, but the Hat did. “A little skidding here, huh? No matter, some friends will help you with that while you’re hear, especially as you do aspire for that greatness!” The Hat started to hum and Skye felt like it was taking ages, and she started to absentmindedly swing her feet on the chair. The Hate noticed. “Alright, alright girl! I’ll say it then…. Slytherin!” This caused a cheer from the Slytherin table and Skye jumped off the stool with a sigh of relief and hurried over to her new family.
