Hexwizard Task 1: Beauxbatons v Durmstrang

Knights

Yefim Rumyanstev (@Flash Holmwood), the Durmstrang Champion was filled with pride as he listened to the crowd cheer for him and his team. He was getting the adulation he and his friends so rightfully deserved. Roberta from Beauxbatons would flirt with the not particularly intelligent, just handsome teen, much to the likely chagrin of his 'special person.' Special of course having all sorts of meanings, perhaps it was some sort of language barrier in this case but it hardly mattered because the girl was more an attractive pawn than a useful aspect of this demonstration.

Yefim would transform into a Knight, a wise place on the board. He had great mobility and more than that the advantage of moving through occupied squares. Something few other champions would likely consider as they surrounded themselves in allies, a dangerous decision to make if their movement was somehow limited.

«Сотри из головы образ толпы, она отвлекает» ”Erase the image of the crowd in your mind, they are a distraction.” A short speech to rally his men, and token pair of woman for 'diversity.' He was confident, perhaps overly as he made a gregarious display. «Свергнуть самозванца» ”Dethrone the pretender.”

His horse would be drawn into action and the Champion would make his way across the board.

The teen had a lot of bravado, it made up for the awkward transformation of some of the other Durmstrang students. Unfortunately the magical girl curriculum was cur for budgetary reasons from most schools. Perhaps with enough candy bar fundraisers an ambitious lot of teens could change that next year. This year however, Cielle Johansen (@Ivy Bellamy) almost fumbled her lance. It was the levity of laughter that alleviated some of her anxiety.

She could do this. Yefim had chosen correctly.

The agitated, apprehensive horse was reflective of the girl's anxiety as it danced restlessly in its starting square. A reassuring pat, the mare would be soothed. She, no they were ready.

Cassie Heather McGregor-Martin (@Lucia Fox) would suffer from the overstimulation of a cheering crowd, the displacement by several countries and the magical transformation into a black knight on top of a grand dark horse. The black knight might not feel particularly fitting for the girl now donning midnight armor. It looked so intimidating, she was not intimidating but she was fearless.

Even the most fearless of women could still feel anxious. Why was it of all people Milo Durand would soothe those nerves. The nerves he should be stepping on? Well, it was hard to say -- a shared enemy. A friendship based on something deeper than conventional pleasantries? A crush she would take to her grave?

Maximilien de Fostoncy (@Lindsey Springhall) would express his gratitude to Andre with a curl to his lip. "Merci, pareil pour toi."] “Thanks, the same to you.”

Maxi would step onto the board and undergo a transformation. The French lad would find himself on the back of a horse clad in dark armor. The plate was heavy and the lance took effort for the teen to heft, but at least he was armed. Roberta would ask him if he could move and he would give the girl an answer between her taunts of the other team. "Je l'espère?" “I…hope so?” He was not entirely certain. "Je vous envie vraiment les gars en tissu." “I sure envy you guys in fabric.” He was living the dream, but the dream ws very heavy.

"Hé, j'aime bien votre char !" “Hey, I like your chariot!” He did not mention Milo's armor which was *ahem* also fantastic. Savory thoughts. Just savory thoughts...

“Oh Dré -” He was looking at André Alarie, the dark Bishop. He had taken the role of holy man. "J'ai toujours dit que tu aurais fière allure dans un royaume féerique." “I’ve always said that you’d look great in a fairy kingdom.” He remarked and looked down from the horseback, it was quite a sight seeing his friends change in the way they did. Some more fitting than others. Some more comfortable looking than others. "C'est fabuleux, tu ne trouves pas ? Nous sommes, nous sommes comme les gens du Moyen Age!" “This is fabulous, don’t you think? We are, we are like people from the Middle Ages!”

He was addressing most of his peers and that was a good thing. It was through teamwork that they would face this challenge. "Bonne chance," he would tell Phyllis.

Finally, Johannes Cyprian Sauer (@Astrea Soleil Neptune) would step onto the checkered board and transform. He was not here for play dress up but he would endure it for the sake of the game. He was by no means a holy man but he would have to play the role on this day, just as some were the dashing knight or even the Queen. How far of a cry was that decision from the truth in regards to some, well that was up for debate.

Bishops

Andre Alarie (@Alec Mason) was the dark priest. Did this mean he had fallen from grace? Did his deity grant him dark power? Well, the power to not stain as easily as the bleached out team across the checkered board at least. "Давай." "Bring it on."

Roberta Martin (@Sylvain Wyllt) was playing mind games with Yefim. It was an unfair fight, one of hem came unarmed. For the sake of debate, they can squabble over who this author meant. "À la chute du chevalier rouge!" "To the red knight's fall!" Who were the red knights? Were they the red knights? No, definitely black. It hid the blood too well. They would have a red knight if the bled enough well, that was a tad morbid honey.

Roberta would find herself comfortably attired compared to some of her teammates.
"Pouvez-vous encore vous déplacer sous toute cette assiette?" "Can you still move under all that plate?" The answer should be -- not well but pride would likely prevent such honesty.

Roberta would open the book and read a random quote from the nondenominational 'good' book. She would not find her salvation in there but rather the message to go on.





Yeah, it was one of those dime store books with uplifting quotes. Live-Laugh-Love was also probably in there.

She would then speak in English as she addressed her opponents. "Who wants to go first?" She would point to Valentin, then Felix, then sweep across the their team. "Your move, punks."

Margarethe Fransson (Evelynn Decipio), better known as "Greta" would soon find herself transformed into a Bishop. An innocent seeming piece for the smallest member of the Horntail Horde. She was one of the ones that saw humor in her contemporaries. Some just looked 'good', like Yefim of course. Then there was Felix, heh... "My Queen." Someone has to say it and with a little curtsy in front of him, she would dart back to her place on the board and leave Felix to his... well... his sentiments.

She would experience the transformation, being taken and changed by the bright and shining light. He would find herself off-balance as the heft of the mighty tome could be felt in her diminutive hands.

Queens

Queen Felix Kolbek (@Winnie Harper) was the white queen. A dramatic dress would replace his 80's punk fashion statements, an improvement RuPaul would be proud of. He pulled it off somehow, the dress in spite of the embarrassment that likely left his cheeks flushed. A begrudging trudge, he would endeavor to hide his expression of annoyance or embarrassment. It was afterall, just a skirt. «Я убью того, кто руководил этими чертовыми нарядами». "I'm going to kill whoever was in charge of these fucking outfits." Well, not in those heels darling.

«Давайте выиграем это дело». "Let's win this thing." The sooner the better.

Amaury Favreau (@Cecily Quinn) would step onto the board as well, he would not address the audience like some of his allies and opponents. He did not find the transformation as shameful as some might have. He was, as he knew, the most powerful piece on the board. His presence could make or break the team as he defended their King and Champion. He was going to win this thing in style as the black queen.

Rooks

Mikael Halldorson (@Percival Rainwood) was conflicted by demons of the past. By what used to be, what was, and what would come to be. There was a time when Valentin's smile would have alleviated the very tension that burdened him. The swelling apprehension. The knowledge and far of betrayal and what it meant for him, the team, no... to Yefim. He was remarkedly loyal to Yefim, not that he considered if such loyalty was earned or simply freely given so it was taken.

He would protect Yefim, but at what cost.

He would step foot onto the back of a chariot and find himself transformed. Reigns in hand, he had the power to do just that - to defend with his flesh, with his honor...

Milo Durand (@Deliah Stewart) would simply step forward and let the transformation take him. Dramatic, he did a spin as well as a few dramatic poses that the media would readily get a shot of. The dark garb he would find himself clothed in was far displaced from anything he, or his mother rather, would pick out for him as he stood in the chariot with reigns in hand.

Could he move in hat stuff?

"Je suis d'accord." I'm ok. He assured her although he had not had much of a chance to test this, the nightmare stead was going to be doing most of the work, right?

Florian LeRoy (@Starlee Kennedy) was not as prepared as they should have been for the transformation. He would find himself on the back of a chariot driven by a dark horse. The restless beast could be easily soothed by the teen. They would go on his ready, the horse but n extension of the boy as he would soon cause havoc on the board.

Finally there was Lysander Stavrou (@Phaedra Stavrou), ruining the Niffler's run and having a little snack before the start of the game. Упс. Может, в следующий раз, а? “Whoops. Maybe next time, eh?” He needed to keep his mind on the game and he would do so as he took a step onto the board and found himself on the back of a pristine chariot.

Kings

Lysander was unnervingly suave as he successfully plucked the frog mid flight as it made it way towards Erin Ryan. A pregame snack would leave Valentin Schnell (@Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood) without his outlet of stress relief, annoying Yefim's "special person." That was not the only symptom of disruption on the team as "Niffler" looked over towards Mikael and saw that smile that did not quite meet his eyes in return. An expression, not a sentiment. Trust was hard-earned and easily lost.

Valentin would step onto the board and let the transformation take him. Bathed in glorious white light, some boys were meant for these magical transformations. He would emerge, wearing what was his favored palate, white. A far cry from the militaristic uniforms worn by Durmstrang's elite student body.

He would prioritize Romeo over his opposition and even his champion. “In queste battaglie innocenti, balliamo la nostra strada verso la vittoria,” In such innocent battles, let us dance our way to victory. It was not in Russian, but again in Italian, a love language. “Perché, anche nei giorni più bui, combatterò per te ancora una volta quando diventerà difficile persino resistere.” For, even in darker days, I will fight for you once more when it becomes difficult even to stand. He could only hope that Romeo was not a part of the active team with sentiment like that if those were not hollow words. What would happen when he had to choose between Romeo and his Champion? It would seem like Yefim would lose.

Roberta would get to Valentin as well with her words. She was picking aa fight and Valentin was more than ready to give one to her. "Oh, hungry to feel the pain, are you? Come and get it. Be our guest."

Cassanora Browne (@Hugh Lowe) would roll her eyes as she listened to the back and forth by her more rambunctious teammates and the opposition. There was a lot happening, and yes it was meant to be a distraction. That was half the challenge of it all. To see through the décor and realize what game you were actually playing. And she was onto them.

"Yes. Yes, that was to be expected." She replied to the "red knight", her opposing Champion who took the role of Knight rather than King. A rather untraditional choice one could only wonder if it would do him well enough. A two-finger salute from the young King, "good luck, big guy." It was game on for the girl while the whole world watched the dark king make her move.

Regal Aura

Regal Aura: Scaling from Wisdom, for every 5 points in wisdom, the King exudes a regal aura on command. Any piece adjacent (the King is not adjacent to themselves) to the King gains a +1 (per 5 of wisdom) to all of their stats except stamina. This does not differentiate between friend and foe. Serves as their action for the round. This remains 'active' until the King decides to 'turn it off' which is a free action. Only turning on the Regal Aura costs an action.

King Niffler would raise his scepter and cast Regal Aura. A great, choking fog would escape from the tip of the scepter in a thin stream of shimmering smoke. It was like a rolling frost that ame off from him and danced around his ankles mischievously. It would spread to the areas around him.

King Cassanora, the champion of Beauxbatons would raise her scepter, not that she had done this before but she would have an inherent understanding of what to do and what must be done. When she did so, the gem at the end of her ornamental piece would seemingly crack, but not break and a darkness would flow from it, surrounding her harmlessly. It was something that would ultimately bolster her allies, the nearest and the dearest... those who stood at her side to defend her in this onslaught.

Rebuke

Rebuke: An aura effect based on the queen's Arcane Power. 10 x Arcane Power damage done to all adjacent enemy (does not effect allies) pieces. This lasts for 3 rounds as a passive effect, meaning it costs an action to initiate and then this effect endures for the next 3 rounds, so if it was cast on round one, it would turn OFF at the end of round 4. You can cast other actions while Rebuke is in effect.

Queen Felix would be the only Queen out of the three boards that did not cast Mistress' Wrath. An offensive, long-ranged spell that could be used to damage and diminish the opposition if they were thoughtful about their placement on the board. Felix's allies would be his teammates of course, the whole of Durmstrang. So as the strange rolling fog would come off the teen's shoulders and creep across the ground it would gave a wide breadth to his fellows. The danger would be for those who would, not that they have yet, cross the foggy threshold and breech the forbidden barrier. This refuge might give them time to collect themselves and to make a plan. It was quite possible they underestimated Beauxbaton's potential.

Rapid Defense

Rapid Defense: They defend another allied piece as their primary action. This action takes place before the movement phase and takes priority in the action phase over attacks made against a specified piece. Similar to defending in Quidditch where a user blocks an oncoming attack made by a specific target, attacks made against this piece would be relegated to this piece (regardless of the direction of attack). If another piece attempts to land in the space that the defender chose (a specific, declared space adjacent to the chosen target), a strength check is rolled. This piece has advantage on this roll. This action does not consume the pieces movement for the round, they can still move, but their movement is considered to be the last movement in the round according to the action stack.

The two Durmstrang tanks Mikael and Lysander would come to the defense of their peers. Felix might be a lovely Queen, but he was certainly not durable. What Mikael lacks in brain he more than made up for in brawn as he rushed with his chariot in front of his Queen. The horse would let out an inpatient snort as he pulled the reigns and the massive white horse slid to a stop in front of teen.

He would likely come to regret this brash decision to performs a Rapid Defense as he was struck by the enemy Queen.

Lysander would rush to the defense of the perpetually accident prone Valentin. It is said that albinos often have vision issues, and perhaps that was why the famed Seeker who can only see what glitters and is gold has had so many accidents. The anemic boy needed protection and his crown would do little but protect the top of his head. He would sent his cart almost over on its side as he made a barrier between Valentin and enemy forces with Rapid Defense.

Florian would come to Cassie's protection. Not to be confused with Cassanora, the Champion and only child of former Head of House Caradoc Browne. No, this was another girl whose name would likely spark confusion amongst the members of Durmstrang. He would rush out in front of the girl, performing a Rapid Defense of his own for Cassie. The reckless, noisy sound of his chariot threatening to crack an axle, he was lightning fast.

Milo would also move across the board with astounding speed. His movement was something the boy could get used to. Milo would perform Rapid Defense and move in front of Maxi, or rather Maximillian. A wealthy, aristocratic name that contrasted his knightly exterior as he stood there behind his human shield twice protected if this armor was good for anything (it really wasn't).

Intercession

Intercession: Using their Wisdom, they are able to shield a single target against an attack. The shielded target must be adjacent. They would protect the target for Wisdom x 10. This would take priority over any other attacks done. Remains on a target until it is exhausted. Can be maintained on more than one target. Does not stack.

Not everyone was here to destroy. Some were here to pray, be it to the great spaghetti monster in the sky, to Merlin himself or the great and merciful RollBot, the Bishops would say a word in prayer.

Johannes would cast his blessing of Intercession on Mikael. Go forth and be murdery.

Greta would grant her Intercession to King Valentin the Pale. Go forth and find a tan.

Roberta would grant Intercession to Amaury. Kick names and take ass.

And finally, Andre would pray for Intercession for Maxi. Go on dude, do something right.

Eagle Eye

Eagle Eye: Capable of targeting someone either on the diagonal or in a straight line up to 3 squares. Cannot target through enemy or allied squares. 50 x Stamina.

Cassie and Maxi would both attempt to cast Eagle Eye at Johannes and Felix. They are ambitious and blood thirsty enough to do it, had they been within range someone might have even gone down. An error that they would not make twice.

Master's Wrath

Mistress' (or Master's) Wrath: A ranged attack that can go in any direction the Queen can move. It cannot move through allied/enemy squares. A blast of arcane energy can be felt across the board. Arcane Power x 50. However, this attack is done at disadvantage and can only target 1 target.

Amaury was going to start of an the offensive. Where Felix was playing the long game, Amury must have quickly concluded that the game is best played when it is so short nobody noticed that there was a game at all. Amury would raise his scepter and point it in Felix's direction as they cast Master's Wrath on Felix, the White Queen.

Mikael was going to take one for the team as he rushed out in front of the attack, pushing Felix back a step in the process as he took the blow straight to the chest. The attack was powerful enough to leave the boy reeling and disoriented. A mule's kick was softer. He was not down, but his limbs would feel a bit numb and his legs would wobble beneath him as he stood.

While most of the words from the other side of the board were French, and therefore unintelligible, Yefim's ears did pick up a part in English, being from his previous Queen again. She was asking them to take the first move, but Yefim would not take the bait. He already had a plan. He knew the Queen would get an early shot out, but the Rook piece was made for such predictable attacks. Mikael would rush forward, exactly as planned even before the match started, though if it were a perfect world, he would have distracted the Queen and managed to avoid damage himself. They were not so lucky. As the pieces on the board started to shift into the formation Yefim had devised, Misha was badly wounded already. Yefim expected him to be a pivotal piece in the game, and was not keen on losing him any time soon. Just how deadly was this queen? ["Misha! Don't you dare go down!"]

As Yefim got closer to Valentin, he could feel the warmth and radiance emanating from him like fire in his belly. He felt stronger, almost like he could do anything. Of course they could, and they would. Instead of attacking with a cheap shot, they would prepare for the game ahead, assuming positions to keep the magic casters safe, and the beefy shield in the way. He watched carefully as the Beauxbatons champion did what he expected-- hid in the back. Now that they were in the game, they would have to adapt the the other team's movements and threats, and the absolute headache of a Queen. Looking to each of this close compatriots, he would begin to mutter quietly in Russian, delivering the moves that would either break this game open, or send them to the slaughter. It was all up to their skills now.

He hoped one of them would dare to try and come hit him. That was the point, right? His hand gripped on his lance tightly, knowing he would cause so much more harm than any of them could hope to replicate.

Roberta's question would be met with a quirk of Felix's brow. If she wanted to come after him, she was welcome to try. He admired her ability as a duelist so no doubt this would be equally as interesting.

Well, so he had thought. After the first round, he was quickly learning this wasn't like dueling at all. Shit. He had somehow survived the first round untouched, not that he could say the same for Mik. Felix grimaced when he watched his friend -- wait friend? -- take the brunt of the attack meant for him.

"He's not going down just yet." Felix assured their leader. Mik seemed like a tough guy, so he probably was fine. It looked like all of Yef's training had come in handy after all. "The party has just begun. Don't do anything drastic, Yef; I can't pick you up wearing this damn gown."

Erin sat down on the bench, it was a lonesome place. Nobody was there, just this shadow of a man... an echo of an intention never fully articulated that shared the bench. His name was Romeo, some sort of sad cliché name "pilgrim to Rome" or "Roman" so not a name with meaning, made famous in a tragic tale of underaged lover who made the rash decision to commit suicide over a couple say relationship. What were mama and papa Durmstrang thinking when they named you.

Still, his teammates seemed to like him. She would reserve judgement for the moment, she knew he probably sucked but there were degrees of suckage. It could be just a mild degree of suck. Niffler was spending a lot of talking talking to Romeo, a façade that should be familiar considering the fact that his twin was a student at Hogwarts but the Slytherin was oblivious to the existence of his sibling underclassman. "Shhhh!" she would raise an index finger to her mouth. "I can't hear Yefim make noise," she had no idea what the hell he was saying even when it was in English.

Her only complaint as she watched the magic girl transformations was that Yefim was not the Rook. For the first time in probably ever, when not in his official school uniform, Yefim Rumyantsev was fully clothed. It was a damn tragedy. The white knight imagery was romantic at the very least, gleaming white armor and a gallant, sturdy stead. It was like something out of a romance book. The rest of the motley crew he had assorted, well they were interesting to look at. Lysander was munching on a chocolate frog and she wondered where he had gotten the wiggly treat. She was too distracted to notice Niffler's hobby or the mild rivalry turned habit.

"Kick the French religion-girl in the face!" She would scream towards the board from her seat through cupped hands. She was referring to Roberta, she did not remember which French name was her. They all had these frilly names, the sort of name you would not want to give a kid unless you wanted them to be bullied mercilessly for their love of playing with paper dolls. At least she was not wearing anything flattering. Merlin, what if he had some sort of nun fetish! This is now nuns dress right, funny little hats? That was not even close to a nun's habit. Erin was just an idiot.

André has been learning phrases from the languages of participating schools in the hexwizard tournament done for the specific intent of talking smack(trash talk). Even poor Maxi wasn't let in on his plan because André was aware he wouldn't get away with it otherwise

Dressed as a bishop, Andre would be inspecting himself when none other than Maxi spoke up. Who spoke adoringly of the attire they were in. He loved it. It was adorable how much he adored is though Andre couldn't help but find himself confused. “Fairy kingdom?” Andre questioned, raising an eyebrow. Maximilian would remark that it was as if they were like people from the middle ages. Slowly Andre nodded. “Yes.” He figured now wasn't the time to crush Maxi's fantasies, not with a game on the line. “Don't fall off.” He was going to fall off wasn't he? Andre would took his chance to help out Maxi in what ways he could. Taking his action, he did his best to help Maxi out. Maxi was talented, he could do great, he just needed a little push.

It was the white king’s duty to emanate inspiration, power, and wellbeing for his team. Drawing from deep within, Valentin poured energy through his icicle-and-fire-opal scepter to amplify a boon to those around him. He walked closely behind his comrades, frost falling in his wake, as he stepped away from his own power source in the stands.

As he reached his first position, it struck Valentin that this was one moment in a potentially limited number in his life. Valentin never understood why an immortal like Nicholas Flamel could just let it all go. Were there not alternatives for safeguarding such power? To the young seeker, it was truly strange that one could willingly accept leaving the game of life without things having gone terribly, terribly wrong. Looking around at his team, having seen many among them growing older over the years, Valentin wondered if living beyond a normal wizard lifespan would not unlock some further stage of life and maturity that mortals rarely got to see. Were people actually put off by immortality simply because of how unusual it was?

Fear was the usual explanation Valentin assumed for the motivations of people he didn’t understand. Hell-Chaser that he was, the seeker was more than happy to accept risk and pain for a worthy enough goal. Valentin’s dreams of immortality weren’t even just about paying Romeo back for saving his life, not anymore. Now, it was that and rooted in so much more… Yet, what would happen if, like the others Valya couldn’t understand, Romeo didn’t want such a gift, much as he had turned Valya himself away that evening in the stadium?

The metal of the scepter in Valya’s hand seemed to be sucking the warmth out of him. With a shiver and a crooked grin, Valentin squeezed the twin curls of metal even harder into his aching hand and raised it into the air like a shining beacon.

“TO VICTORY!” cried the white king, hell-bent on savoring this moment whether his days be few or many. The only thing that mattered right now was the thrill of bolstering his people in battle.

The game began, and Cassie wasn't quite prepared for it. All those hours spent practicing with her papa's chessboard (destroyed now thanks to the Durmstrang champion) could never have prepared her for this, because it was just so different. Everyone moved all at once, everyone was casting 'spells' from their books or looking around them, waiting for a time to strike. At least all her practise had helped her to learn off by heart how she, as a knight, could move: Cassie plotted her route in her head and moved to C6. Only a moment after she landed on the space she would finish her turn on, Florian ran out in front of her. Well, not quite ran: the boy was riding a sort of chariot pulled by a demonic horse. "You ever ridden a chariot before?" Cassie asked Florian, expecting a negative answer. Who out there rode a chariot in their day-to-day life?

And with everyone now situated on the chessboard in their allotted positions, it was time for the battle to commence. While Florian had been strength training over most of the summer and school year, including all sorts of swimming, running, and broom racing, he hadn't been practicing any sort of chess, although he doubt it would have been helpful anyway. This game had been altered from the typical chess, so strategy hadn't been on his mind, at least it hadn't been until the demonstration.

Either way, it was time to go, and he had the plan in mind. He gripped the reins on his chariot and surged to his left, in an attempt to block an attack from Cassie, then, seeing as no attack was coming, he readjusted himself in front of Roberta. He was able to control the horses movements with the grace of someone who has spent their entire lives with them, despite never riding upon a chariot. It was different than simply riding a horse, of course, but he had a natural gift with anything racing related.

Cassie inquired if he had ever ridden a chariot before, to which he responded, "No, I haven't, but I grew up with horses, it doesn't seem to feel much different than simply riding one." He paused, then continued, "It's quite fun already actually, perhaps I will have to get one of my own to try out at home." he grinned excitedly.

The match began, and they were off. A scramble to protect their vulnerable and precious pieces-- or, in Amaury's case, a direct attack. There was no use in coming out of the gate without a bang. He was the Queen; he already knew he would be a target. He might as well take as many of his opponents down with him as possible. A smirk grew on his face as hell rained down upon not his intended target, the White Queen, but their Rook instead-- a suitable substitution. Amaury wasn't particularly picky about which opponent's blood was drawn first. They would all tumble eventually.

And with that, they were off, with the movements all being at the same time it was a lot more chaotic than regular chess. Milo had played plenty of muggle and wizards chess in his life, it being a relatively common pastime for him in Beauxbatons and at home with his Maman, chess keeps the mind busy and healthy, she would always say. However this, was actually somewhat chaos, within seconds the entire board had shifted and it was hard to tell who had the upper hand.
