Clutching an envelope in her hand, June ran up the steps to the top floor of the owlery. The letter wasn't particularly urgent, but for June it was very, very important. She had learned two things in the last month:
1. Her search for a reputation was not going well at all, and mostly resulted in her crying. This behaviour was weak and uncomfortable and June wished for it to stop immediately. Perhaps she needed a different approach to her reputation-building...
2. June Selwyn loved to fly. Absolutely loved it. She was no "athlete", per say, but the way her soul felt when she flew was nothing short of incredible. Every time. The realization truly sunk in after her encounter with George Henry the other week, when she realized that she didn't entirely hate the sensation of being thrown out of a tree. She still boiled with anger every time she thought of the rest of the interaction, but the flying part she quite liked. The flying part she liked a lot.
And so June had written a letter to her parents, something she'd done often throughout the year, but this was the first letter with a request.
It was a terribly bland and boring letter, but it would get the point across. June wanted to fly.Dear Mum and Dad,
Firstly, Dad, thank you so much for sending your book so quickly! I gave the copy to my Astronomy professor, she seemed to really like it.
As you know, my birthday is coming up, and I think I've decided on what I would like as a birthday present. After doing a lot of research, I think I would like to have a Swiftstick broom. If this is my birthday present for this year, you wouldn't need to owl it to school, as the year is almost out. Perhaps we can do a little family celebration once I'm home?
End-of-terms are going well, I miss you both terribly and I can't wait to see you again.
Love,
Your June
As she turned the corner at the top of the staircase, she found someone else already in the room. A Gryffindor girl with beautiful black hair was standing by one owl in particular. June knew exactly who this was; Regina Miller. Now this was a girl with a reputation, but at what cost? She'd heard how Regina and a Slytherin first-year had tormented a prefect and walked out of detention... June wasn't quite sure she wanted people to think of her in the way they thought of Regina. Still, it was plenty more reputation than what June currently had, perhaps she could ask her for some advice.
June sheepishly waved hello before walking over to one of the school owls (as she didn't have one of her own), giving it her letter. She watched as the owl picked up the envelope in its beak and took flight out of the window. June watched it soar across the sky, the golden hour sun illuminating its wings as it took June's envelope back home.
She stood there for a while, watching the owl until it was out of sight. But her letter was a matter of the future, and she needed to deal with the present moment. Here, in the same room, was someone who seemed to be a fountain of information and advice on reputation. Sure, Regina did intimidate June a lot a bit, but surely just talking to her wouldn't cause any harm, would it?
June cleared her throat. "Lovely evening, isn't it?" She stood around a bit awkwardly, unsure what to say or do. "I'm Selwyn, by the way. June Selwyn." June rocked on her heels for a bit, trying to formulate her next few sentences in her head before she spoke again. "Would you mind if I asked you a question? Some advice, really. See... Well, long story short, I feel like I've hardly done anything in my first year, and it seems like no one knows who I am. And I hate that. You seem to have quite a reputation, and you're only a second year... How did you do it?"

"Hello, my friend. I see you have been fairing well today."
Regina's voice was unusually gentle as she caressed the top of Athena's head, offering up the palm of her other hand lovingly as the great white owl perched down to nibble on the treat. Then again, it was as clear as day she did not get along well with most human on a daily basis, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone that she'd be much gentler with animals. They were more intelligent than most people she'd had the unpleasure of meeting, and they didn't need words to be understood and loved. Athena had been a constant comfort for the raven-haired witch since the beginning of the second semester, and Regina was glad she'd made the decision to purchase a pet during Yule break. Having her feathery companion around was certainly a grounding presence to keep her sane.
Being branded as the school's newest Gryffindor rebel had its up and downs, even though Regina wasn't afraid to embrace the reputation. She'd even started dressing differently to fit the role, and intimidate away all the strangers who'd think twice before approaching her carelessly. It might not be the sort of recognition the Miller patriarch expected of his Heirs, but it was the sort Regina needed to finally establish herself within Hogwarts. It made her feel good, like she was (temporarily) no longer bound by the chains of extreme expectations and control.
What the raven-haired Gryffindor hadn't accounted for, perhaps, was the possibility that certain individuals would still want to come to her despite her bad reputation. Someone like this little Slytherin who was so clearly intimidated, yet was brave enough to attempt a normal conversation.
Regina looked at the girl - June Selwyn, she'd introduced herself - and gave the underclassman a critical one-up as her great white owl Athena stopped pecking on the treats and turned her head to regard the second human presence as well. Selwyn was short, almost comically so, with bright blond hair and grey-blue eyes. She didn't seem at all like a person who was ready for the kind of 'reputation' she was seeking for in Regina. How odd. She would commend Selwyn for taking the first step though, so maybe there was still some hope for the little Snake after all.
"How did I do it, you ask? I suppose it was just the Gryffindor blood inside of me," She replied, quirking an eyebrow. "Do you truly think you are ready to bear that kind of recognition?"

June stood frozen as Regina looked her over. Even the girl's owl had stopped to stare, to assess. Had June overstepped, was there an unspoken rule to not ask for this kind of advice? Or had June offended by bringing up Regina's reputation?
"Gryffindor blood"... June didn't think she had a drop of that in her entire body. Was she ready for that kind of reputation? She wasn't sure. But, feeling a bit more confident since yesterday, she figured the only way to find out was to try. She supposed that's what she had been doing all this time, trying. And failing, which was the worst part of it all. But June was confident, assured, incredibly secure in the hope that she would find what she didn't fail at. But she hoped she'd find it soon as the failure was taking a toll on June's self-confidence much more than she'd like to admit.
"Well," June took a deep breath, "I'm not quite sure, but... Isn't any recognition better than none at all?" It certainly seemed like it to June. "Did you truly think you were ready to bear that kind of recognition? I mean, is this the sort of thing you seek out? I'm tired of simply waiting for things to fall into my lap." June's words came out quicker and quicker. She stopped herself short. She realized that she'd divulged her loneliness to quite a few people in the last few weeks, and she quite disliked it. At this rate, her reputation would be that of the lonely blonde Slytherin, and that completely defeated the purpose of her seeking it out in the first place.
June thought through the girl's words again, picking them apart. That phrase struck something in her again, "'Gryffindor blood'? Don't tell me you think there's no hope for the rest of us, do you? If that were the case, wouldn't my 'blood'," June air quoted, "have caused me to, I don't know, be known as the terror of Hogwarts by now? Instead, I'm sure you don't particularly know who I am."

If it had been just months prior where Regina was still a jaded and cynical person, she would have scoffed at June's attitude and deliver a scathing comment - enough to make sure their paths never crossed again. Such had been how she'd treated the people who were bold to question her. But Regina was no longer the same girl she'd started out as a second-year. Instead, she merely quirked an eyebrow, impressed at the daringness behind the younger Slytherin's challenging words.
"You misunderstand me. I do not simply 'seek out' to have this bad reputation, it was just a consequence of my personal actions. And you are right, I do not know who you are since this is the first time we have ever talked."
The raven-haired Lioness could definitely detect a strong sense of desperation there, if June was willing to approach her while fully knowing nothing good might come out of it. Regina didn't necessarily think of herself as a bad influence, per se, because she didn't actively go out of her way to get other people to break the rules with her. What had happened in the Rehearsal Room with Draven Mirador was completely unprecedented, and it was the first time Regina had lashed out. Still, the fact that she quite enjoyed the recognition from other students afterwards must count for something. She could see where June was coming from.
"You certainly have the attitude for that sort of recognition, you do," The older girl drawled as her owl hopped onto her shoulder, unnerving beady eyes never leaving June. "I suppose if you do want to get your name out there, that boldness will come in handy. Acting shy and meek will not get you anywhere."
Regina crossed her arms as she took a few steps closer to the young Snake, almost towering over the girl as she stared down with analysing purple irises. She scanned her face in silence for a few seconds before finally speaking up again.
"If you say you are ready, how about a suggestion? Nothing too drastic, I assure you."

Acting shy and meek would not get June anywhere, Regina Miller was right. Ivy had said something similar, too, about how June needed to "loosen up". June agreed, but the question was how. She didn't know what she didn't know. What were interesting things for one to do on a weekend? Where are the places people gather, where things happen? She'd felt like she'd missed her chance for learning these things alongside everyone else in her year. Her ears perked up as Regina gave June a compliment (whether she had intended to do so or not, June didn't know and, quite frankly, didn't care). An attitude for recognition, eh? June stood up a bit taller after that comment. Perhaps her "conquering" mindset was beginning to pay off.
June struggled to keep her straight posture as Regina and her owl came towards her, their shadows completely consuming June's body. June's gaze flickered between the Gryffindor's striking purple eyes and the owl's piercing owlish ones. Her eyes finally settled on Regina, the pair in an almost staring-contest. Regina finally was the one to break the silence.
A suggestion? June was very, very intrigued. No one had offered her helpful practical advice yet, something concrete for June to do or try. "Please do give me any suggestions you have. It's why I started talking in the first place," June smiled, a bit nervous, but hoping to show her warmth and willingness to this girl.

"You have potential, Selwyn," Regina said. "I can see the thirst for recognition in your eyes. You remind me of myself."
The raven-haired rebel was pleasantly impressed with how well the younger girl was holding up even though she looked so clearly intimidated by the way she loomed over her. Selwyn had a backbone indeed. Should she succeed, Regina might even consider taking this young Snake under her wing and teach her all the ways to gain attention through skills and daringness. She stepped back a little to allow Selwyn some relief from her earlier critical assessment with an obviously satisfied expression.
"Your first step into building a fearsome reputation should be the willingness to infringe school rules. If you do get caught, it'll just be a little bonus to boost it quicker. If you don't however, everyone would be naturally impressed."
Regina thought the Slytherin girl could start with something small, something easy. The consequences wouldn't be as dire as how she herself had blatantly attacked a Prefect during detention after sneaking into Hogsmade. She doubted Selwyn was willing to harm another student for the sake of her reputation, anyway. Perhaps not at this stage.
Her mental calculations halted at the perfect suggestion. Yes, it should do nicely. And she'd be there to see the results for herself, furthermore.
"There is a hidden room on the fifth floor near the Gryffindor common room," Regina began. "It it named the Room of Requirement, and the door only appears when one needs it the most."
At this, the older Gryffindor turned sideways and gauged blond-haired girl with the corner of her eyes.
"Go there after curfew and make sure not to run into any Prefects or Professors. I will be waiting in a music room. Just walk back and forth in front of the empty wall three times while thinking of me and you will be able to enter."
Usually, when people knew that there was a chance they'd have to bare the negative consequences, they would back down immediately - thinking they'd rather respect the norms after all. Now, will Selwyn be brave enough to take the bait and willingly compromise herself?

June exhaled as Regina backed away and gave her some space, she hadn't realized she'd been holding her breath. Infringe on school rules? June's complexion went a tad paler than usual. But, surely she wouldn't be asked to do something drastic so soon, would she? Her mind tutted away. But, Selwyn, you already broke the rules when you snuck into Hogsmeade with Ivy. Ah, yes. June was already practically a delinquent. What harm could one more small rule-break do?
"A hidden room?" June figured such a thing would exist here, but to be given instructions on how to access it to nonchalantly was quite unexpected. She mulled over the suggestion for a moment. It was quite significantly more risky for June to go to the room as opposed to Regina, June had much farther to travel. But perhaps that was the point...
June crossed her arms and weighed her options in her head. Option one, accept the offer and possibly get caught or possibly not get caught, both of which could boost her reputation in a positive way. Option two, decline the offer and be seen as a big fat wuss in the eyes of one of the most feared students June knew of, boosting her reputation in a very negative way. The answer seemed pretty obvious.
"Well then, Miller, I suppose I'll be seeing you later tonight."

The corner of Regina's lips lifted only slightly at the Slytherin's bold declaration, her head lifting with eyes shining with a bit of amusement. She had always taken a liking to brave, audacious character in a person.
"You will do great things, June Selwyn. I can see it. Until then, do you best."
It was the most of a compliment Regina had ever given anybody. The Snake girl should take pride in it being able to draw a praise from somebody as apathetic as her.
Athena hooted approvingly and Regina reached up to pet her owl's head with a gentle hand, a contrast to the cold demeanor she displayed to other people. Athena pecked her affectionately once then flew out of the Owlery, presumably on a late afternoon hunt. Vivid purple eyes watched as the white silhouette of her pet disappeared into the sky, then shifted to Selwyn contemplatively. Regina hadn't lied when she thought of taking the young first-year in as her mentee, if she succeeded. It would be nice, beneficial even, to have a sort of little 'apprentice' as her second pair of eyes and ears in this school. It would give Regina all the information and gossip she needed to establish her own standing with the other students, and in return, Selwyn would get the recognition she wanted for her daringness and being associated with a fearsome rebel.
Yes, she'd made the right choice indeed.
With a little meaningful nod, the Gryffindor bid goodbye to the Slytherin and walked out of the Owlery. She still had a whole evening in front of her before expecting Selwyn at the Room of Requirement.
