Emma was frustrated and was not getting any better. She had had great difficulties doing the Glass to Sand spell in Transfiguration barely managing to turn some of the glass she had been given into sand. That was not acceptable in her eyes. She needed to do better. Emma knew that she not the only one to struggle, but she didn’t care. Even though she was new to magic, she was determined to be better than most. She did not like the feeling of failure and that was reflected in her growing frustration. She had managed to find some shards of glass and when looking for space to practice, thinking the dorm and common room would be too noisy or messy, Emma had gone looking around the castle. She had found this empty classroom, and placed the glass on one of the desks. If she couldn’t use the Reparifarge spell, she could easily sweep the sand into her hand and throw it in the bin.

Staring at the desk, she imagined the glass turning into sand, and pulled out her wand, calmly stating what she thought was the correct pronunciation of the incantation and correct wand movement. But the glass stubborn remained glass, not even looking a little grainier. Emma’s face grew a bit red, and her hands fisted, sparks flying from her wand as she growled and then spoke loudly through gritted teeth, ”Come on! This isn’t even supposed to be that hard.”

Pacing to the desk that sat behind her, she pulled out her textbook, reading once more the incantation, and wand movement. Climbing on the desk, she began repeating what she thought the pronunciation should be. In a bit she’d attempt the wand movement before once more tackling the glass that seemed to sparkle extra just to add to Emma’s frustration.

𝕬fter the whole scuffle she'd had with a first-year Hufflepuff student last month which had resulted in whispering gossips and a furious letter from the Miller patriarch, Regina had made the decision to avoid the Study Room completely when it came to revising her lessons and doing assigned homework after class. She'd rather not enter yet another altercation in such a public place should trouble arise, so she'd resorted to searching for an empty classroom to practice her spells. What a coincidence, that was, when Regina went pass one of those with a frustrated voice coming from the inside. A brow was quirked bemusedly as the Gryffindor neared the slightly ajar door and pushed it open, coming upon a scene where a brown-haired girl in Hufflepuff robes was perched on top of a desk, wand pointed at gleaming shards of glass and struggling to use her magic.

It didn't took a detective to know what was going on here--clearly this person was dealing with the inability to properly cast a transfiguration spell. Regina remembered clearly the Glass to Sand lesson in the first-year curriculum and grimace contorted her face when she assessed the abhorring way the Badger was positioned. And the clear lack of proper intent, too, if the angry expression was anything to go by. There was no way she'd be able to success like that. The Miller Heiress debated whether or not it was wise to step in and correct the girl. If it would cause an undesirable outcome. Merlin knew dealing with one daft little Hufflepuff was quite enough. She didn't need another one.

"You are doing it all wrong," Regina sighed, setting foot inside the classroom and walked closer the other girl. "Surely you are more competent than this? Glass to Sand is one of the most basic of transfiguration spells."

Somehow, it didn't quite occur to the raven-haired Gryffindor that she was coming off as incredibly pretentious and rude. But she knew not of how to approach people in a considerate manner, especially not if she considered them to be inferior. This girl didn't seem to belong in any of Regina's classes, so she must not be a second-year, that much was certain. She hadn't seen her or known her from anywhere within the Pureblood society circle either, so it was safe to assume she was from a lesser bloodline. That would somewhat explain the spell-casting struggle.

"Perhaps a demonstration is in order?" The Heiress drawled, her black aspen wand slipping from underneath her sleeve and into the palm of her hand. With her chin high, a flawless pronunciation and precise movements, Regina effortlessly transfigured the glass shards into a pile of sand.
Child's play, really. The Hufflepuff girl should pay more attention in class.

Emma jumped at the sound of a voice from behind her, almost dropping the book she had been studying while practicing the spell. Instead she managed to close it on her thumb, having slammed the book quite hard. ”Ouch! That hurt!” She cried out, shaking her hand to try to dispel some of the sting. It makes no sense that that would do anything but for some reason, it seemed to lessen the hurt a bit.

Her temper was rising as her brain caught up to what the Gryffindor had been saying. She did not appreciate that the girl seemed to be putting her down. After all, she was struggling with the spell. Emma was certain that others must be. But then she recalled that she herself had been wondering why it was being so difficult, which just seemed to fan the flames a bit more.

Doing her best to keep from gritting her teeth, she told them ”I’m just struggling a bit. I know it’s basic, but for some reason I just can’t get it. You don’t have to be mean about it.” She said it in a bit of a snappish tone, her anger overriding her usual anxiety when meeting new people and the need to please others.

Emma didn’t even recognize the regal Gryffindor, and was sure that she must be an older student. After all she looked a bit taller and older than her other classmates, which meant she was likely working on spells that were much tougher than this and would have already had to master this spell. So it was easy enough for her to say that it was the most basic of spells when she had already graduated from first year. Emma knew she was in a bit of a spiral, and her brain just kept circling around and around the same thoughts. Her anger did not seem to want to abate at the moment.

Watching in disbelief as the girl transformed the glass into perfect little grains of sand, Emma felt like screaming. Instead she angrily and forcibly forcibly said ”Thank you for that demonstration, but I will get this spell!”

Taking a breath, Emma reversed the transfiguration with Reparifarge, imagining the sand reforming into glass. Slightly surprisingly, it had worked. Perhaps she just had a block when it came to the glass to sand spell.

”See, I’m not totally incompetent.” Having cooled down slightly after the successful casting, Emma got off the desk, and turned to the Gryffindor, realizing that the book had not been helping so maybe paying attention to another student would help. At least one that knew how to cast the spell. Although she was still frustrated at how the girl had swept in here and basically called Emma incompetent.

”I’m sorry about the outburst, but, could you show me that motion again please. I think I might be doing that middle bit wrong.” Emma said the words a bit roughly, still with a kernel of frustration and anger in her tone but, she hoped the girl understood the apology was sincere even if it was a bit rushed and ended with a request.

Regina sent the girl a flat look as she spat her words out angrily, thoroughly unimpressed at the heated claim. She crossed her arms and watched with a bored expression as the Hufflepuff attempted the Glass to Sand spell once more after reversing it. This time, it actually worked - surprisingly enough, in Regina's opinion. It was only thanks to her flawless demonstration, of course. The arrogant Lioness inside of her purred with narcissistic satisfaction even though her face betrayed no emotion.

"Yes," The syllable was deliberately drawled out. "Not totally incompetent, but nowhere near perfect. You still have much to learn, little Badger."

Truly, some first-years were so quick to believe they could achieve anything the moment they got their hands on a wand. If she had to take a wild guess, this girl might not even come from a wizarding household, if she was struggling this much with something so elementary. Regina supposed not everybody was blessed enough to be born into a long line of Purebloods as she was. A pity.

The Heiress almost laughed ironically at the forced apology followed by a request. Almost.

"And here I thought you believe yourself to be so efficient," She said, setting down her satchel and pulled back the long sleeves of her black school robes. "What is your name, girl?"

Regina would like a proper name to attach to such a terribly average, boring face instead of just referring to her as the 'little Badger'. Red hair, blue grey eyes and nothing else special. Nothing distinctive like the unnatural (and unnerving at times) orchid purple in Regina's own irises.

Emma felt a little guilty at what she had said, the more she cooled down, the more the guilt rose. And she knew it would haunt her randomly at times. Although the other girl's attitude was a bit helpful at lessening the guilt, because Emma did not appreciate it at all. She was struggling and needed a push, and some help obviously but their attitude could use some work.

Emma was not expecting anything beyond not being called or looked at as incompetent. She was not incompetent! Tears were starting to spring to her eyes, as the words brought back her fears that she would not be a good enough witch and this whole thing had been a mistake. That she was a failure and useless.
"I know that," Emma replied defensively. "I'm just a first year so obviously there's more to learn, otherwise there wouldn't be seven years at Hogwarts." She added slightly sullenly, crossing her arms, her wand feeling warm in her grip.

Emma was surprised when they put down their bag, pulling back their sleeves, obviously staying a bit longer. Hesitantly, looking at the older girl slightly suspiciously, Emma raised her chin and said, "Emma Wynn and you?" She lasted all of a minute in her attempt to look haughty, quickly looking back to the ground, bringing her arms closer around her body as if to hug herself.

Regina wanted to scowl at the sight of the young Hufflepuff's glossy eyes. Great, was she going to have to deal with a crybaby? She had a strong dislike of sensitive people with a mental so fragile it could be broken with a few well-placed words. With what she had gone through during her childhood, she had to learn to hardened herself against emotional vulnerability - which was why Regina looked down upon those who did not share as much of a stoic mind.

"Wipe that pitiful look off of your face, Wynn," Regina sneered. "This is your first lesson in a cutthroat, competitive world. When people put you down, you do not cry about it. You patch up the wound and clench your teeth through the pain as you fight to prove them wrong."

Her voice was cold, a hint of resentment and scorn bleeding into her words because of her past. She thrusted her wand in the direction of the pile of sand with a fury that wasn't there before, effortlessly casting Reparifarge to turn it back into a glass.

"And for your information, my name is Miller. Regina Miller, second year Gryffindor," She said with a single glance to the younger girl, before performing an impeccable demonstration of the wand movement and incantation of the Glass to Sand transfiguration. She even made sure to do it a bit slower so the meek Little Badger could pay attention.

Emma was sure that the so-called "pitiful look" had been wiped from her face to be replaced by one of shock. Honestly, she didn't think she had ever been spoken to in such a way and she honestly couldn't say that she even liked it. The rest of the girl's words just cemented her opinion that she was not one to be easily messed with. Emma felt her mouth drop open, unsure of how she could even adopt that attitude although she had to say that the not crying bit would be a bonus. She knew not everyone was kind but still, she didn't like looking at everyone as if they were out to hurt her.

"ummmm...isn't that a bit, I don't know dark? Not everyone can be so cutthroat, right?" Emma honestly knew she was somewhat naïve but still, she would rather look on the positive side and hope for the best. She had her down times where the world looked dark, but she always seemed to find her way out.

She watched, jumping slightly at the quick, furious motion Regina made, effortlessly casting Reparifarge. Gaping, Emma gripped her wand tighter, hoping that she could be just as smooth at pulling the spell off soon.

Nodding, she said "Nice to meet you, Regina." Although honestly she would have pegged the girl for a slytherin. But that was stereotyping for you. Shaking her head, she focused on the motion of Regina's wand, the incantation sounding loudly in the room. Thinking out loud, she said "So basically, I was missing that middle bit wand wise? And where was the emphasis on the incantation?"

Not waiting for Regina's answer, Emma did her best to replicate the motion and pronunciation, and while the glass did move in a kind of fluttery motion, it still didn't end up as sand.
