Astrid arrived on the field, her new broom in her hand. It was her first real match. And she was really looking forward to crushing Hogwarts. She hadn't spent ten days in the middle of Russia doing intensive training with the Durmstrang team for nothing. Even though she was the youngest of the team, the only girl on the team, she was still determined to beat Hogwarts.
Once in the stadium, Astrid realised that the majority of the Durmstrang-Koldovstoretz team were mainly Durmstrang. Noticing this reassured her a little because at least she knew almost the whole team. And it's good to know your teammates. Astrid smiled when she saw a girl from Koldovstoretz talking to Charles. She wouldn't be the only girl in the team.

Valentin stood before his team in the foyer before they entered the pitch. He looked each team mate in the eyes slowly and with exquisite calm.

Turning first to Johannes, Valentin grasped the keeper’s shoulder. “That day… You brought me back amid all the chaos and violence that rained down on you… even when you ran with another pack. You held it together under that firestorm. Show me that iron resolve again today.”

The captain next turned to Lysander and craned his neck up. “Lys… you and I are both daredevils. I know you are not fearless out of naïveté. No, you know what you can handle out of experience. When things get crazy out there, I will count on you to outplay the opposition. Don’t hold back.” Valentin’s boot heels echoed as he turned and stepped away.

“Madhup Hexum… You have been with us since the beginning, and no matter how many hits we took, you never lost your roguish charm. Indeed, it has metamorphosized into something greater. You have so become cool and collected that it brings a peace, a sense of self-control, over me. I think we all feel it. Keep sharing that confidence with us, and we will prevail.”

Tossing his long white hair out of his eyes, Valentin stepped up to Charles. A twinkle in his silver-hellebore eyes accompanied Val’s warm smile. “Karlchen,” he began, using Charles’s German diminutive. He considered continuing on in German, but since he didn’t want the rest of the team to feel left out, Valentin opted for Russian. “I owe you my life, and you have always stuck with me, ever since the beginning. You are unpredictable, explosive, and yet kind. Sometimes, chaos can blow up in our faces, yet I need you to channel your dangerousness today. Don’t let the enemy know what’s coming until it’s too late for them, but we need your creative talents now more than ever. Show me what you can do, Pillar of Durmstrang.” Valentin leaned in slightly, inspecting Charles’s blue eyes, then threw a surprise punch at the chaser’s shoulder. The blow was gentle but solid, inflicting no damage but telling Charles he was serious. “I’m taking you with me into this battle, like you asked, because I want you flying by my side. You, Charles. Don’t wipe out.” With a quick half-hug, Valentin turned away then to face his second-string beater.

“Arjan…” said the captain, breathing in a long, slow draw of antechamber air. “Use your temper wisely. I need you to feel the moment and pick the right time to go off like a bomb.” Val tipped his head respectfully and turned next to his second-string seeker.

“Little Astrid… You gave so much of yourself to the training at Boot Camp. Already you have grown faster, more in control, stronger. I am so proud of you. If I should fall, we’ll need you to step in and give us your best work. I want a masterpiece out of you– the kind of flying that deserves to be captured in art for posterity. This time, don’t just make the art– be the art.

As he turned away from the other seeker, Valentin raised his gaze to the ceiling as if he could see past the roof and even beyond the blue dome of the sky. The boy, the captain, exhaled, his eyes glistening as if he could see the stars even though he could only hold them in his thoughts. Valya stood surrounded by the full complement of his team, and he breathed in. However the day turned out, he was grateful for the battle to come. This was where he was born to be.

Valya turned, at last, to Romeo. The boy’s electric blue eyes seared like lasers, and hell-chaser Val couldn’t look away. The seeker just stood there, staring back at his co-captain. For a moment Valentin just wished for Romeo to be happy today, but then he shook his head. No, this was beyond happiness. Valentin wanted much more for the boy. In a word, what Val really wished for him was godliness. If Rome could just be everything he should be, at his most transcendent, then that… that just might satisfy Valentin well enough to live with peace in his heart.

Raising his slim white hand to cover his own heart, Valentin swallowed. Even in physical language, Valentin didn’t know what to say. He was the captain. He had to tell Romeo something, had to do something. Then, even from inside the stadium building, the rumble of distant thunder growled. Valentin’s skin prickled, and the boy felt as if reality had begun to hum with the electricity of the wandering storm. Keen eyes lighting upon the other boy’s gloved hand, Valentin took a step forward. They’d shared a single bolt of lightning that day. They both bore its scars.

“Romeva,” pushed Val. “Don’t let go.” Valentin’s eyes closed. A memory, then another, shivered through his mind. His eyelids parted like clouds, and the seeker looked back up at the sky as if in a Tatar prayer.

“Make this destiny with me,” said Valya, eyes as hard and sharp as diamonds. “You and me, let’s go.”

His pale hand falling back to his side, Val turned away and began walking to the edge of the group. Captain Schnell turned to his Koldovstoretz team mates and bowed his snowy head.

“While the ranks of Durmstrang have grown strong, today we are bigger than Durmstrang. Today we are Yilbegän, the two-headed Siberian Dragon. Our Koldovstoretz allies bring us new perspectives and possibilities. Edward, Rosella, Evgeny– you are our comrades and we will fly with you today as one legendary beast. Show our enemy no mercy,” gusted Valentin’s silver voice as he launched a fist into the air. “The Yilbegän will soar over its opposition.”

Valentin walked back to the center of the group and looked over his team, pale face aglow with hot red passion.

“Think about it, our past. We bled. We crashed and burned. We broke ourselves down to our last withered threads, and yet, we also pushed ourselves back up again because one has to lose to know how to win. You know luck alone never lasts. Together we have forged true strength by taking on our mistakes, not blindly shoving them into a closet with fear, but picking apart our painful errors until we understood what winning requires of us. Now is our time. Through blood and tears beckons the transcendence of limits. We have never been stronger, nor our coordination so smooth. I have come to trust each of you with my life. My team, my family, I feel the power flowing through us to make history today. Play this like it’s our last day on Earth, giving every last drop of you, and let us revel in it all.”

Val turned, then, and swept his broom in front of him as he dashed out towards the pitch. Before even clearing the exit, he was already on his broom. Soaring straight up in a delicate, weaving spiral, Valentin began an aerial dance to give his fans a taste of what was to come. In a rolling backflip, Valentin dove straight down towards the stands as if he might crash, only to pull up at the last split second and fly just barely above the fans. He stretched out his arm to give a high five to anyone in the stands who would take his offer. His keen eyes picked out a marvelous niffler banner and little fishlet Greta behind it. He would fight for this little Valkyrie today.

Valentin’s eyes flooded over as he his bones rumbled with the roar of the crowd. Fima was there for him, too, making his support known through a beautiful scream. Val flew right over him and dangled upside down on his broom, hearing every word the boy said. For a moment, they were close enough for Fima to see the glint of a ring on Valya’s right hand before the seeker fired a loving kick at Yefim with one leg that landed on the champion’s shoulder.

“FIIIIMAAAAAAAA!!” screamed the niffler back. He could hear his forever-friend knocking people over as he uselessly chased after Valentin through the crowd. Val bit his lip as he tried to hold in a sob, whipping himself into a violent turn and weaving back upwards towards the center of the pitch. The wind howled in his ears in harmony with the orchestra of the crowd.

A peal of thunder clapped again in the distance and Val turned his eyes to the unusually dark morning sky. Yeah, it’s raining, he thought. I will use this to my advantage. Striving to feel each droplet striking him, Valentin squeezed his broom with both hands and legs as if to thank it, as if to reassure it. This was the same broom that had saved him the first time he’d gotten struck by lightning. He’d painstakingly repaired it, even though he had the budget to buy a new one, or dozens of them, really. None of that mattered as much as his craft's soul. He had let one broom go already. This time, he wouldn’t let go, not until one or both of them were dead.

Doing as strategized.

MENTIONS. Valentin, Romeo
Having remained uncharacteristically quiet throughout the pregame meeting, Lysander allowed himself to let loose to the clamor of countless roaring spectators. Red robes billowed behind him as he took off for the inagural lap, no doubt helped by the gusty weather. Those sitting beneath his aerial path would experience barrel rolls and dives frighteningly close to their own heads, the kind of self-parading behaviour one would expect from a boy just granted the opportunity to make a name for himself.

No longer a dreamy onlooker, Lysander was now a full participant of the acclaimed sport, as late coming into the action as he was. Today made his first Quidditch game since last school year's end, on an international stage at that. However, he was not alone in seeing just one thing as an immeasurable disappointment; having to merge with Team Koldovstoretz was just that, even in light of the smaller school's circumstances. But such an opinion was considerably selfish, and one best kept to himself. On the bright side, there was no language barrier. He just hoped their Koldovstoretz cousins had it in them.

Landing with the rest of Durmstrang, Lysander threw his arm around his best mate's shoulders. «“Heh. You have no idea what havoc you've just brought upon yourself,”» he remarked with a grin, accent seemingly lacking its usual summertime deterioration. Perhaps he had his captains to thank for that. They'd arranged quite the boot camp for the team throughout July. Mere proximity to a native ensured his Russian would not go unpracticed for weeks, along with other things, namely his expertise with the antique broom guarded at his side. «“You're on. Don't get too comfortable.”»

Somewhere between the conversation, his eyes wandered up to the stands. A stadium of this magnitude could have concealed his loved ones anywhere, but seated just a few rows above where he stood on the sidelines was, rather coincidentally, none other than his girlfriend. Despite their time apart, he supplied her a wink—the need to impress just as strong as the day they met. Goggles now shielding his eyes from the rain and broom thoroughly inspected, he mounted once more and took to the center field.

• When attempting to use the return to broom action, this is a free action (meaning both users can make a normal action) the rider and ONE passenger (if there are multiple sharing the broom, it would cost both of their actions to return them to their broom also) can retrieve a single broom.

• This broom can carry multiple people. When someone uses the catch option to rescue a falling teammate, they can catch one additional teammate in a given round. If the user has the ability Catch then a user can catch an indefinite number of teammates in a round, but for each person they catch after the first there is a stacking 20% auto-failure chance.

• In the role of Chaser, if you have a contested quaffle grab and a contested strength roll between yourself and another user is in progress, unless they have the same broom, you would be the victor of the contested quaffle grab. In addition, rounds where you are successfully carrying the quaffle in an attempt to score, you only take half-damage from bludgers and blatching attempts.

I watch as the clouds ovehead grow dark and foreboding. It was not long before large, fat raindrops began to fall, watering the grass of the grand London Stadium Pitch. Somewhere deep in my core I felt a rattling, a sensation that made itself real in the form of a thundering of an incoming Summer storm that bow begins to roll its way across the stadium, foretelling a very wet, and dangerously slippery, game.

I had called the members of Durmstang's team around Val and myself before we went out, intending to impart one more tidbit of wisdom before the big game.

"By the sounds outside that aren't that of the cheering crowd, we will be dealing with a potentially dangerous field. Keep your hands dry and sticky however you can. We need those Quaffle points and the Snitch, of course." I close my eyes and rest my chin on my breast for a while, my grip lightly squeezing on the ebony handle of my newly bestowed Firebolt. For some reason, I still thought that if I let it go it would somehow vanish from my hand. I still felt like I was dreaming... This was real. It was all real.

I was here, at the finals... Again.

With a maplewood bat held under my right arm. "This team likes to cheat, as many do... And I've heard they're good at it too. Keep on your guard, keep your seats. It'll be a long way down, as always." I glance to Val in particular, knowing just how precious a prize it was to knock down a Seeker. "Fly keenly, Il Niffler." I almost demand from him, using my Italian diminutive as I put a hand on his shoulder softly.

"We have all sweated, bled, and toiled for this. We have prepared for this. We are ready to win, and not only to win, but to conquer!" I shout, snatching my bat and hoisting it into the air like a sword. I ignore the knowledge that it is likely that many of my team will fall and suffer during this game. They will be in pain... But I will be there for then afterwards. "FOR DURMSTRANG!"

I then quietly put my arm down and content myself with looking out at the Pitch once again, envisioning blue and scarlet whirling across the Pitch a mach speeds; of bodies falling from the sky to strike the ground, of maneuvers and foul plays, and of Quaffles scoring and the goldbug being snatched by one of the teams. Valetin would snatch it. It was his to take.

The back of my right hand begins to itch as Valetin speaks to the team himself. I scratch it through my glove absentmindedly as he continues, my electric blue eyes scouring the skies for that white plasma. Though the clouds billow black as a smoker's breath, so far there seems to be little in the way of electric light. Hopefully the poor weather would not turn poorer, lest there be more unsavory complications to the game. I wanted to have my players experience as little harm as possible...

But I so desperately wanted to win. For all of us, for myself, for Val. No matter the bodies, the bones, the blood. I wanted to win.

Val falls silent behind me, and I glance back at the team with quiet appraisal; my brows furrowed in thought as I imagined each of their roles in the game. They would all play a part in our collective victory alongside our cousin school Koldovstorez. We would all make sacrifices... But it would ultimately be the two lead captains of the two teams that would lead this chess match together... Not me and Val. Val and Koldovstorez' captain. I was left to follow orders and be sacrificed for the greater good.

And I was fine with that.

The Yilbegän would soon take flight.

I smile lightly towards Val, watching his own hesitations towards this new and perilous endeavor. "I still don't know what I did to deserve these second chances." I confessed quietly in a voice barely above a murmur. "But I am ready for whatever comes next." I pick at the fingerless glove once before pinching the cuff and pulling it off my hand entirely. Though darkened in the foyer, the pale scars of lightning stand out against olive skin... Scars I had hidden so far because I felt no need to flaunt them. That was pride. That was selfish pride.

But now... This was the time to hold nothing back. I idly trace the fingers of my opposite hand on the small pattern that traced itself from the webbing between my index and middle finger down the back of my hand.

Let go? Nonsense. "Who the hell do you think I am, Val? I don't let go. Never." I clench my lightning-blessed hand. "Take my hands from me before I even consider letting go."

'Si fará male. He will get hurt.'

'Not if I can help it.' I swear to myself internally. 'We have a plan.'

'Avevi un piano. Non sei tu al comando in questo momento, amico. You had a plan. You are not in charge right now, friend.'

I shrug off the negative thoughts that buzz in my head and ring in both ears, electing instead to nod affirmatively to Val. "Catch that snitch. Don't fall. We win this year. For you, for me, for us." I give him a gentle bear hug and pat him gently on the back reassuringly... Finding that I am trying to reassure myself just as much as I assure him. He is so much stronger than he had been when I first began to speak to him on a daily basis. Healthier, stronger, determined and more self-assured.

Before I let him go, I kiss the air over both his cheeks, right then left, in the il bacetto. With a deep sigh, I finally let him go to speak with the other team. I watch him go before pointing my bat towards the entrance with a grin st my own Durmstrang fellows.

"Well? What are we waiting for? Let's fly!"

I ensure that all the members of the Yilbegän had exited before I cause my Firebolt to hover in the air and then make a running mount as I exit into the outdoors and into the screaming of the stadium, an emblazoned '4' on my back, the only jersey had had been big enough to fit me and the jersey that I had once been swimming in my first year at Durmstrang.

How the years had passed me by.

Standing across from our opponents as our referee welcomed both teams, I keep my head straight and gaze forward to politely acknowledge the other team. When offered a hand to shake from the man I am almost eye level with (Plott's 6'2" vs Romeo's 6'0"), I take it politely with my lightning-scarred hand and firmly shake (an action that may or may not have resulted in a bit of a crunching of fingerbones if Mr. Plott's anatomy was not especially firm).

"An excellent game to you, Ravenclaw captains." I call to the opposing team, hoping to appeal to their sportsmanlike, or at least their pleasantly intellectual natures. "Let us play with honor and good conduct, and let the best tactician win." I nod to them in appreciation for their sportsmanship before mounting the ebony Firebolt with my bat in hand. I fix my team and theirs with equal measurements of appraisal before offering a genuine smile.

The Quaffle was thrown...

And I took to the skies, twirling my maple bat in hand.

This was it. The moment Lavinia had been looking forward to for 4 years. The summer quidditch game against another school. She was finally playing in it after an extremely good season. The 2021-2022 season was the only winning season that Lavinia had participated in, and she loved every second of it. With victory, came Lavinia practicing and studying quidditch in every waking extra moment she had. There was no way that she was going to lose at this match, this was her destiny.

If she could do well in this match then maybe her name would spread a little internationally and make her more likely to be recruited by a professional team. Her name had already spread more than she was expecting throughout Hogwarts when an article published on how much she cheats in quidditch was released. In her mind, any publicity was good publicly because it made herself more well known.

Walking out onto the London field after a summer camp full of practices, Lavinia had the brightest smile on her face. This was her moment and she was going to give it everything she has. These international kids didn’t stand a chance when Lavinia was playing.

London. Quidditch. LONDON QUIDDITCH STADIUM. This was every young Quidditch lover's DREAM! She couldn't believe she would actually get to play here-- Erm, or maybe just sit on the bench, but STILL! Just being a part of the team was causing her heart to hammer against her chest, especially as they entered the stadium. She hoped Matt was watching her in her moment of glory. No matter how it ended, this was going to be something she'd remember.

Also, why the heck was the opposing team composed of good looking boys? Was there some sort of weird Quidditch modelling agency that she hadn't heard of?

Although the weather was looking glum, things were still looking on the up and up for Sylvain. He would be lying to himself if he tried to believe he wasn't nervous. That ole screw in his stomach still giving him the butterflies, which at a time like this it was to be expected, but he had no trouble admitting that the better part of it was excitement for the game to come. He was thrilled for the match at hand. This was it, the game they had been working towards all year. Call it intuition but he had a feeling his friends felt the same way so when he flew out onto the pitch, crowds of folks gathered in the London Stadium, he was overwhelmed with many feelings all at once.

Turning to his team, he did the only thing he could think of and thanked them for all their hard work and sacrifices. "Thank you all for such a wonderful year, we couldn't have done it without each other." Friendship was of course the most powerful magic but he truly couldn't express exactly how thankful he was just to be a part of this moment. It wasn't just that they'd worked hard to get here, but that the many of them had so readily made hard choices and difficult sacrifices at his call. Team Ravenclaw had a knack for constantly blowing him away. "I couldn't have imagined a better team. No matter what happens out there today, let's go have some fun." Sylvain wasn't one for many words, but deep down he thought that those just might be the right incantation to get them all amped up for the big game.

And here was the reason why Aly had been allowed to attend this summer camp in the first place. After her two-week stay with the Alluring family, related to her through her mother Hesper's rarely-visited side of the family, Aly had returned home to the news that the Ravenclaw Quidditch team had been invited to represent Hogwarts in a match against foreign schools at the annual summer camp in the London Quidditch Stadium. Since she was Ravenclaw's first-string Keeper, Aly herself was expected to attend. Of course, her mother Hesper had been anything but thrilled - her daughter was supposed to be in trouble, after all, and sending her off to have fun at a summer camp was the opposite of punishment. But Hesper herself had played Quidditch during her time at Hogwarts, one of Slytherin's star Chasers, and between Aly's mother's love for Quidditch and Aly's father's soft spot for his daughter, the young Ravenclaw had been able to convince her parents to let her attend the camp, just so she could proudly play for her school.

So far, the camp was huge and interesting - there were always things going on, and Aly had even been bunked with the entire delegation from Castelobruxo, who seemed nice enough, even if they were always snapping at each other in Portuguese. But she had been waiting five days now for this Quidditch match, and the time was finally here. Decked out in her Ravenclaw Keeper's uniform, with blue robes and bronze pads into which she was only just now beginning to grow, Aly brought her trusty Silver Arrow out into the rainy day. She didn't mind playing in the rain, honestly - sure, it was a little wet and uncomfortable, but Quaffles had a Gripping Charm on them for a reason. Mostly, her mind was just on the fact that she was going to play a real Quidditch match in the London Quidditch Stadium. Wish Mother could see this, she mused to herself as she mounted her broom. This is the experience of a lifetime! Now we just have to win!

Glancing around at the opposing team, Aly spotted a familiar, beloved face within the Durmstrang delegation. Charles, her second cousin, was conversing with some of his teammates. Unsure if he was looking her way or not, Aly still gave him an excited wave and yelled out across the pitch, "Good luck, Charles!" She would not have survived two weeks in the Alluring mansion if not for her unexpected friend, who had also taught her the path of upkeeping one's appearance, including tricks with eyeliner and some new fashion sense. She had never been one to expect or particularly want a makeover, but she had grown to adore Charles for his keen sense of humor and eye for beauty, and though she didn't want his team to win, she would be proud of her second cousin either way.

Then there were her own teammates, many of whom had already arrived. Syl was, as usual, giving some inspirational speech, and Aly gave him a brilliant grin. Truly, she would have been listening to him if it were not for the screams of the crowd; she couldn't believe she was actually here, and listening to the audience's hoots and hollers was worth letting her captain's words be drowned out. There would be plenty of time for inspirational speeches before their matches at Hogwarts the coming year; for now, Aly was content to lose herself in a dream, imagining that she was playing for England in the World Cup or something like that.

She pushed off from the ground, blinking water away from her eyes. "And Salinger, England's Keeper, is in the air," the curly-haired Ravenclaw whispered to herself, pretending that she was an announcer speaking about herself, even as rain dampened her frizzy mane and made its way into her mouth. "She's one to watch out for in this match, that's for sure... Russia and Bulgaria won't know what hit them when Salinger comes their way..."

And once again, another quidditch match that hopefully only would require her to sit still and look pretty. This time they were against another school which was crazy nerve wracking. She didn’t know their ability, so she’d expect them to be at least good. It would be better to not underestimate your enemy, otherwise you’d be surprised.
