Welcome! My name is Noah Jupe (and Cody Stevenson, and Clark William Baird-Carter), and I am the author of this Welcome Letter. However, the resources in this Letter, or guide, is not made or written by me. There are important links at the end, and there are links to joining sports, but I do ask that you please read through this guide. It could prove helpful as you roleplay with us.

Now, as I promised, an introduction, as always, I love to introduce myself. My name is Noah Jupe, I am a Second Year Gryffindor of an adoptive pureblood family. When I say adoptive pureblood I mean all the kids are adopted and are purebloods. His dads are in their late thirties, and don't exactly make so much money as everyone loves to say. They even bought my cape and headband for me! They care so much about me! And I love them so much. I once had a boyfriend but when I returned over a period of six months, I never saw him again. I am thirteen, have an obsession with theatre, and goosebumps. I'm part of a martial arts club, and I have been called dorky. My own twin brother calls me Dorkasaurus, and mean names I will never repeat, but that's my brother, and I love him to death, even if we have our own sibling rivalries. I come to Hogwarts with hopes of being someone like his heroes who taught Herbology.

As you see, that was in character, but, the thing is, when you thread, or make your post, make sure it's 200 or more words. Some tips, by the way, are to describe the setting. Explain your character's thoughts. And if yer in an OOC area, or out of character, it usually doesn't matter how many words you type. It's meant for you, not your character. So, as this guide/letter is being sent/pinging you, I'm talking out of character. (OOC)

When do we start classes? How do we start classes?
---1) You start in ten days OOC should you want to do homework, and you also have to have 20 posts. Posting in the Game Room doesn't provide posts, but posting in OOC Lets Chat provides a post, roleplaying provides a post.
---2) Once your report card is unlocked, homework is PURELY OOC, and by doing it before you graduate, you might earn the spells, as long as you don't make a "T". Though my suggestion to avoid a Troll "T" is to READ through the lesson, as not every spell will be canon-wise. For instance, the extinguishing spell (Extinguio) is not exactly canon, as there is hardly *any* information on them. The lessons will more than likely consist of information that'll be in your homework.
---3) You could instead, learn the spells and potions, or even just the lessons, and see what Professors might want to RP with you, giving you an IC lesson and you learn the spell.
---4) You could have a Prodigal Charms | Prodigal DADA | Prodigal Transfiguration | Prodigal Potions (I might be forgetting some, but uh- :man_shrugging:) and learn spells a year ahead of you. IE, you could be a first year, with the Prodigal DADA ability, and on top of first year DADA spells you learn (Periculum, Verdimillious, Fumos, Flipendo, and Mucus Ad Nausuem) you could write a rp for DADA where you learn second year DADA spells (Mimblewimble, Bluebell Flames, Obscuro, Expelliarmus) making you slightly more able to do things, even in dueling or our new sport, Broom Racing.

Want to join a sport? Keep in mind that if you want to join something so badly, but the waitlist might be full, you can have your iNPC (important nonplayer character) take that sport. :P We offer three sports; Broom Racing, Quidditch, and Duelling. Broom Racing has to be our deadliest game we have so far, with duelling being with the spells you learn from homework, and Quidditch, you know how it works, but we roll for it. Which is why you need an approved encyclopedia. Broom Racing, by the way, is a combination of racing on your broom, and perhaps slinging spells at each other. You might even attempt some moves that might be scary! Like flying by a whomping willow.

Classes - Every class we have onsite is from the book, with the exception of Arithmancy. (More info on classes can also be found in the Classes section of this Welcome Letter.)-- doing homework though is also (NOT REQUIRED) a fun thing to do.

As long as you fully understand that I can't give you the answers, neither can the others. We we can guide you through the homework though and provide assistance where its needed. Some classes require roleplays, some don't and it depends on the class lesson. Any questions? Feel free to ask! I will gladly go more indepth!

Also, an addition has been added to the classes rule, but it's just to the players (you and I) from April 2nd 2021. This below is what the announcement says: Professors try the best they can to grade everything by the end of the month, please remember you had a whole month to submit an assignment. Expecting them to have the last day of the month free for last minute submissions is not a realistic expectation. If you submit something the last few days of the month, there is a very good chance that the homework might not be graded. For those that want a concrete statement of how long -- within the last week there is no promises. While most try for within the last day that is not a promise, that is them giving their best effort. Subsequent statements by Professors stating promises that contradict this (ie. 24hours exactly, 12 hours, etc.) is a promise from them for their grading which they have the right to later withdraw and does not automatically pass on like a double lifetime warrantee to the next Professor that takes over their role. They can not speak for the staff as an aggregate only what their abilities are in terms of grading. We will not (and can not) retroactively add the points you earned in the next month to the previous month to make you the top 3, 10, etc. Those points are added by the system for the next month.

Detention System - Speaking from someone who has recieved IC detentions several times... I can say this is a fun system. To get a detention- you have to break an IC rule- like sneaking out after curfew- or swimming in the great lake without supervision- etc. The only OOC effect you get for recieving a detention is really just that you can't create or join new threads- but you can continue threads created prior detention being granted. Once your detention has been completed, you can join new threads as you so wish. I will admit, this is a nice break sometimes from joining a lot of threads.
Where To Start? - This is simply an explanation about how to get around the site- and is short as the site is very large. It also covers socialization and character building onsite.
Earning Money/House Points - This is understandably a little difficult to understand, I too was in the same boat. You earn money via collecting your scholarship or doing certain errands (if they offer money). Additionally, someone (2+) could give you money. You can earn house points via doing homework and by doing errands (if offered)
How To Make An Ency Page -

It's now time to create your Encylopedia, isn't it? Here are two visual guides produced by one of our lovely users onsite, Clair Fernandez. (Part One (Character Info), Part Two (Trunk)) The videos serve as visuals if you'd like to do it that way, but here are some guides for you to look at, and I strongly encourage you to read over these. Also, PLEASE check with me over your ency, before you submit it for registration. The reason? So you don't have a declined registration your first few tries. I'm here to help you have a really good ency, make sure it fits with site lore, and to make sure you understand creating an ency, as it serves as your character's character sheet.

Stats - Your stats are beneficial when you are in a modded event, or even if you're participating in an unofficial event. You could be duelling, and a spell could have hit you. To evade, would rely on your evasion.

What are the six abilities? Evasion, Stamina, Strength, Wisdom, Arcane Power, and Accuracy.

Evasion- Evasion is used to dodge attacks. For example, lets say you have 10 points in Evasion, and you are evading the spell "Incendio." The moderator rolls a d20 and adds the opponent's wisdom (7 for example) and it could be 17 (10+7). And then the mod rolls another d20 and adds the opponent's accuracy (3 for example) and it could be 12 (9+3). NOW this is where Evasion comes into play. To evade the spell, you now need a 13 or higher. Let's say the d20 rolled was a 12. The 12 isn't endgame for you, it hasn't had the 10 points added to it from (alleged) your evasion. This now makes it a 22 and now, Incendio has missed.

Stamina- Stamina is your health, and when assigning stat points, this is a MUST for at least one point. How it would work in official events, to determine your health, I'm going to use an example. 4. Four (4) times (x) a hundred (100) is four hundred (400). So you would have 400/400 health. Should an attack hit, you would be reduced a certain amount of damage, as applicable by the attack.

Strength- For use in lifting things or fighting martially. As always, it's rolled with a d20. You add your strength modifier to the d20.

Wisdom- This is used to see if the spell is casted properly (as if it backfires, or if it does an elegant effect, or it continues as normal, or if it doesn't work at all). A d20+wisdom modifier would determine that. In duelling, (since I've played that and not quid+broomracing yet) you'll see WDC. WDC means Wisdom Difficulty. You have to beat the WDC in order to be able to cast the spell. For example, there is the Knockback Jinx (Flipendo) and you have to beat a WDC of 9. Some spells have it higher.
Arcane Power- Arcane Power is used to calculate the damage. In "Incendio" there is the damage of 50 + AP × 10. (Let's say you have a AP of 5.) It would be 50 + (5(five is the AP) x 10) and the damage would then be 100.

Accuracy- Accuracy would be to hit, and it would be contested with the opponent's Evasion, to see if it hit or missed. You would probably prefer that it hit, so you could win. It would be done with (as always) the d20. You would then add your points to it, (lets pretend your Acc is 10) (d20:5+10) It would be 15+ that the opponent would have to beat with their evasion just to dodge your attack

Thread Symbols - To shorten this-- feather/leaf icon at the bottom of your starter is for RP threads- click that before submitting. The ID card is for your encylopedia. The spider is for bugs (to be reported in Technical Support). The chat bubble is for discussion- and the double chat bubbles are for flood chats. Usually you have to get permission from staff in order to use it. The broom is used for broom racing and quidditch (both are site sports that use brooms), and the wand is for duelling (another site sport). The trophy is for contests. The information icon- the I inside a circle... is for informational threads. And the puzzle piece is used for games- usually only reserved to the game section of your dormitory and the game page in Leaky Cauldron.
Starting Threads - This is super easy, just acknowledge that every thread you start (unless in the owlery) has to be 200+ words as a minimum. This topic just covers what you truly need when you write a starter.
Pets - This is a list of pets and their costs if you were to ever want to buy one. A roleplay thread and the required amount of money is needed before you can get a pet OOCwise for your character. Please note... what you see besides your post is NOT the amount of money you have. That is your total wealth, adding the current money you have to the stuff you have in your trunk- (The stuff you bought using site currency). To locate your current amount- go to your profile picture and right below it- when you hover over the picture- is your character's name and the money you have.
MENTORSHIP info (recommended) - This is a way to familiarize yourself with the site, and learn how to do Homework, how to roleplay, and how to make your encylopedia. However, if you join the program- please acknowledge that you are expected to do the three prompts.

The moderator rolls a d20 and adds the opponent's wisdom (7 for example) and it could be 17 (10+7). And then the mod rolls another d20 and adds the opponent's accuracy (3 for example) and it could be 12 (9+3). NOW this is where Evasion comes into play. To evade the spell, you now need a 13 or higher. Let's say the d20 rolled was a 12. The 12 isn't endgame for you, it hasn't had the 10 points added to it from (alleged) your evasion. This now makes it a 22 and now, Incendio has missed.

[u]Stamina[/u]- Stamina is your health, and when assigning stat points, this is a MUST for at least one point. How it would work in official events, to determine your health, I'm going to use an example. 4. Four (4) times (x) a hundred (100) is four hundred (400). So you would have 400/400 health. Should an attack hit, you would be reduced a certain amount of damage, as applicable by the attack.

[u]Strength[/u]- For use in lifting things or fighting martially. As always, it's rolled with a d20. You add your strength modifier to the d20.

[u]Wisdom[/u]- This is used to see if the spell is casted properly (as if it backfires, or if it does an elegant effect, or it continues as normal, or if it doesn't work at all). A d20+wisdom modifier would determine that. In duelling, (since I've played that and not quid+broomracing yet) you'll see WDC. WDC means Wisdom Difficulty. You have to beat the WDC in order to be able to cast the spell. For example, there is the Knockback Jinx (Flipendo) and you have to beat a WDC of 9. Some spells have it higher.
[u]Arcane Power[/u]- Arcane Power is used to calculate the damage. In "Incendio" there is the damage of 50 + AP × 10. (Let's say you have a AP of 5.) It would be 50 + (5(five is the AP) x 10) and the damage would then be 100. 

[u]Accuracy[/u]- Accuracy would be to hit, and it would be contested with the opponent's Evasion, to see if it hit or missed. You would probably prefer that it hit, so you could win. It would be done with (as always) the d20. You would then add your points to it, (lets pretend your Acc is 10) (d20:5+10) It would be 15+ that the opponent would have to beat with their evasion just to dodge your attack[/reducio]

Usually you have to get permission from staff in order to use it. The broom is used for broom racing and quidditch (both are site sports that use brooms), and the wand is for duelling (another site sport). The trophy is for contests. The information icon- the I inside a circle... is for informational threads. And the puzzle piece is used for games- usually only reserved to the game section of your dormitory and the game page in Leaky Cauldron.

To collect a scholarship, you will have to go to your common room and head to the top of the forum- where it shows "new post" a silver circle, whatever. The silver circle is your scholarship- ten sickles every 22 hours.

I know you link to site rules, but I think you should add some warnings about about actions that will get new (and old) people in trouble. Like multiaccounting. Too many people try it, and they always get caught!

Yeah for me this is the first site I've been a part of where you're not allowed to have more than 1 account/aka more than 1 character during your time here. I was surprised by this, as all the other sites I've been part of or have seen around don't have this rule. They say you can have as many as you think you can handle. A lot of new people might not realize HiO's rule about this. I'm glad I found out before I tried making other accounts for different characters. But then again, I read the rules in great detail when I first joined, just to make sure I'm doing everything properly. I don't know if lots of people do that or not but that's what it was like for me. In general, I give this site an 85% when it comes to perfection and I'm pretty stingy about giving out percentages and have high standards.

So an 85% perfection rating from me for a site is unheard of! HiO really is the most well put-together site I've ever been part of and I love the majority of it. It's 100% hands down the best Harry Potter site. And as for other sites, it's really one of the best imo. As for the 15% that I don't like, that's composed of these things. 5% = amount of characters you can have on HiO. 5% = face claims. 5% = being a little confusing when you first start out (if you make a mistake you have to live with it, unless you deactivate your character). If they upped the amount of characters you can have on HiO to 5 total characters, I'd give the site a 90% perfection rating. If they added a feature such as a thread where people can claim their face claims so no one has the same face claim, I'd give the site a 95% perfection rating. And lastly, if they explained things in great detail in a specific thread that all newbies have to look at once they are accepted that explains - 1) the cons of taking a special rare talent or race 2) stats (the fact that once you decide you can't ever change them and that you need specific stats for specific wizard sports) 3) total wealth vs money you can spend - then I would give the site a 100% perfection rating.

That being said, I do realize that most of these things I've talked about ARE in the rules. But they are lost in the rules and not many newbies seem to re-read the rules after their initial acceptance. Therefore, my idea of having a separate thread that is given to them as soon as they are accepted that they need to read through before starting to write on the site might be useful. I don't know. If what I said was incorporated and they still don't get it after reading it, there's nothing that can be done I guess. But yeah. Just my thoughts on the matter. All in all, I think HiO is THE best Harry Potter site currently out there and one of the best put-together sites I've been part of or have seen so far. It's not perfect (because of the things I mentioned above) but it's very close to being perfect and that's something to be proud about! Thanks should be given to all the staff members <3

Also, I'm not saying anything should be changed, the site is pretty good just the way it is now. But if you wanted a 100% perfection rating from me, that's what would need to be changed imo.
