This was the first duel of the year that Santario had been fully human, and it was like a breath of fresh air to be back. She would arrive in the duelling room far earlier than she needed to be to help make sure that everything was prepped for the matches ahead. Time would pass as spectators and duellists trickled in, and when it was time, Santario would position herself in the middle of the piste.

“Good morning. Today we have Hufflepuff versus Gryffindor, so when I call your name, take your place on the platform. For house Hufflepuff; Logan Baird and David Howard!” The crowd would cheer for the Hufflepuffs as they detached themselves from their peers, and Santario would give the public a moment before continuing on. “For house Gryffindor; Regina Miller and Aurelia Notrésvace!.” Cheers would erupt in the air as Santario looked over the duellists. Hufflepuff was having particularly bad luck this season, and while it seemed that Gryffindor had the upper hand in this duel, fate sometimes had a fondness for the underdog.

Santario cleared her throat. “ Standard rules apply; no physical assaults, no attacking if your opponent is paralyzed, and so forth. Remember, duels are limited and will no longer continue, seemingly forever. So strategize carefully and don’t waste a single move. Good luck. Begin!” As Santario began the duel, she moved back to her overseer position and awaited the tension of spells to be released.

𝕿his was it. This was the moment Regina had been waiting for since the day she'd submitted to join the Duelling Club. Now she stood proudly on the stage as her name was introduced, chin high and posture elegant with her prized aspen wand held in a firm, confident grip. She'd always known that this place was where she truly belonged, all eyes on her as they awaited to witness a show of her spell-casting prowess. And it was a show she would give them.

She would finally be able to make her family proud.

"Let us show these meek little Badgers the true power of a predator, shall we?" Regina addressed Aurelia, her room and House mate with a meaningful glance. They weren't quite friends, but they were allies, and now teammates. They would bring victory to the House of Gryffindor.

I nervously stepped out onto the piste inside the dueling room, nervously because of all the people watching, at least I was with my partner Logan, someone I had met a day earlier, but now that I was on stage in front of everyone else, I kinda felt bad that she was the one who got partnered up with me, mainly because I wouldn't be much help against to opponents way above my league. I only became more nervous when the opposing team came onto the piste, something didn't feel right about them, something that made my heart beat faster as my bones shivered from the cold. But now that I was on stage, there wasn't anything I could do about it, so instead I just tried my best act my usual cheery self, and it kinda worked. I pretended to crack my knuckles before saying "Why am I doing that as if I'm not about to get my ass beat?" I then took out my wand, hoping it wouldn't fail me during my first duel. I remembered practicing in this very room earlier with my friend AngelFyre, casting the one spell I knew how to cast best, the one that I thought would do the most damage to my opponent, and now it was time to show it's true power in battle.

Logan should have been nervous as she made her way onto the dueling platform, but if she was she did not show it. The Hufflepuff kept her head held high and made herself seem confident. Fake it till you make it, and maybe the Gryffindor team would not underestimate her. This was not her first duel, and this was not going to be her first duel where her partner was a first year. She had trust in her partner that they would at least protect her a little as she would make sure to protect them.

In reality the Hufflepuff was nervous, who would not be when one of their opponents was much older then them. The only thing the girl could due was hope that luck was on their side for once and that she would at least be able to make it a few rounds longer than she had the previous round of duels.

This was Aurelia's second duel, she hoped that personal sentiments would not get in the way again. Aurelia was not cruel, she maintained some empathy even if there was still a lot to work on. She didn't take pleasure in hurting others. Yet duelling was the best way to ensure that her spells were right, but the nature of it was physical. However, she didn't appreciate the venomous tone of her roommate. "Do only what is necessary to win and not more." She whispered as she approached the stage.

When the duel began, it was clear that no one was holding back from the get-go, even if everything didn’t come out to plan. Logan made her first target Aurelia raising her wand; a black cloth would shoot from the tip of the walnut wood. Unfortunately for the badger, the elder lion would dodge it with ease.

Likewise, Aurelia would initially point her wand at Logan. Yet, despite the incantation being spoken correctly and the wand movement being precise, her spell would veer uncontrollably off course and head toward David. Thankfully for the lion, it did not deviate in the direction of her own partner. However, he had no intention of getting caught in the gust of wind that went his way.

David, while dodging Aurelia’s chaotic winds, would attempt to fire off his own Flipendo at Regina, who would return the favor with her own Incendio. David would not manage to dodge this lioness’s fiery fury, and it would burn him rather painfully, but thankfully he did not seem to catch aflame. Regina might have started to brace for the blue light that started to accrue at the tip of David's wand, but it would be for naught. David could have sworn that he said the incantation properly and that he might have made the motion correctly. A blue glow formed at the tip of his wand and for just a moment it might have seemed like it was going to backfire on him, however, it would harmlessly fade away instead.

Santario herself wasn’t sure how much longer the boy could last, but if he chose to stick it out until the end, it would remind her a lot of Nicholas and certainly something to be viewed with nothing but respect.

Years of ballet practice did her well, even if she no longer took to the art, the fluidity and grace of those movements were still ingrained in her muscles. With a graceful hop, Aurelia easily moved from the spell's trajectory without much effort. The black ribbon whipped off stage far from where she stood. To have aimed at her instead of Regina, the Hufflepuff's confidence in their own spellcasting was commendable, Aurelia would give her that, but in the end, not quite as impressive.
However, Aurelia's own spellcasting was not too impressive either. Perhaps she was just slightly out of practice. Her grasp was not quite as ready when the wind burst from the tip of her wand. Moving astray from her original target and towards the boy, missing nevertheless. Not as she would expect, but not the worst outcome. "Could you be any less vicious?" Aurelia commented under her breath as her teammate set the boy alight in flames, albeit only for a few seconds before it died off likely due to her winds. It was such a cruel painful spell, but Regina wouldn't know until she did. The damage was done and the boy visibly weakened.

"You know what to do."

I aimed my wand at Regina and concentrated on the effect of the spell I was about to cast before moving my wand in the all too familiar checkmark with a hook on the end and just as I started saying the magic word to complete the spell, out of the corner of my eye I saw the spell that Aurelia had cast a bit earlier change direction and head right at me, so I quickly moved out of the way causing myself to loose concentration on the spell and just as I finished saying "Flipendo!", the tip of my wand lit up with a blue light. My face lit up in horror as I realized what was about to happen, it had happened to me before and there was no reason it couldn't happen again, especially since I had just lost my concentration so I used all of my willpower to try to extinguish the spell, not that it had ever worked before and I wasn't expecting it to work this time either, or ever for that matter, but it was definitely worth a shot because what when I opened my eyes, the tip of my wand was no longer glowing.

What was glowing was the orange fire that had come my way from Regina and as much as I tried to dodge it, it was too late... the streak of fire had already already managed to hit my shirt. The excruciating pain I experienced in that moment is a pain that I shall never forget, there was just too much heat and my skin was being burnt alive, or so it felt, but thankfully the fire only lasted for a few seconds before going out. The pain however, did not. My chest continued to burn and my skin felt like it was peeling off under my shirt, and as much as I wanted to be angry at Regina, she wasn't the one who signed me up for the dueling team, I was and I knew what I was getting myself into when I did so so I had only myself to blame.

"𝖂hat are you doing there, Howard?" Regina taunted, the corner of her lips curling into a pretentious smirk. "You need to try even harder than that pitiful attempt. Incendio!"

A glowing orange light shot out from the tip of her aspen wand, burning as fierce as her fighting spirit and landing directly on the Hufflepuff. Her orchid violet eyes gleamed with dark satisfaction as she witnessed her attack in motion, scorching David alive and extinguishing a few moments later. Regina was slightly disappointed that the spell hadn't been strong enough to catch him aflame, but the damage was done and she was proud of her prowess.

"Do not dictate on how I should duel," The ravenette replied coldly to her teammate's remark, not even sparing Aurelia a glance even as she prepared herself for the next round. "Perhaps you should focus more on making sure your spells hit rather than how I handle my prey."

Logan was not surprised when her spell did not hit the older Gryffindor duelist, the girl always had a hard time actually hitting anything. What had surprised her though was the sudden Ventus spell that should have hit her but instead completely missed her and her partner. The girl stood frozen for a second, she should have payed more attention and maybe she would have been able to war her partner of the Incendio spell about to hit him.
