Adelaide couldn't help but smile at Pax's compliment, "Thank you, I do really like the dress, so it is a plus about this evening, I suppose. But yes, my mother was a big fan of the Hogwarts balls, so she's insisted I need to attend every single one, for some reason."

A chuckle escaped unbidden as Pax spun around, "Yes," she nodded, "I've never attended a ball before either. My mother grew up never attending any of the prestigious Pure-blood balls so we never went to any either, but my father did go to the balls and he described them basically how you described them. Business discussions, very formal, stuck up Pure-bloods thinking they're better than everyone," she waved her hand to dismiss the topic, not particularly wanting to spend the rest of the evening talking about the things Pure-bloods get up to.

The blonde was not surprised when Pax said that they had indeed signed up for one of the games. "It was not hard to guess," she said and shook her head, "absolutely not. I won't be signing up for any of them, not my style in the slightest. I thought you knew this about me already?" She smirked, tilting her head to the side as if questioning why Pax had dared even ask that question. Adelaide was about to ask Pax about the partner, Mandy, they had mentioned, before she was abruptly interrupted when someone stumbled into her from behind.

"Merlin, would you watch it?" She groaned, whirling around to find who had bumped into her. He was a boy, slightly taller than she was with short pink hair and a, she took into account, ripped yet pretty pink dress. It was quite stylish, if you didn't take notice of the ripped dress. "Hm? Oh," she touched her hair, which had been left down for the night, automatically after the boy mentioned it, "thank you. I really don't do anything extravagant, just shampoo and conditioner and I brush it a lot so there's no knots or tangles."

She motioned with a hand towards his dress, "What happened to your dress?" She asked curiously before he introduced himself. "Ah, Mahoutokoro, is it nice there?" She asked Hiro, having never met a student from Mahoutokoro before.

"Not a problem Jürgen," Marion chimed in reply. She was smiling wide, dressed to the nines as if anyone would expect anything less from the dark-haired beauty. She had been watching for the teen since her arrival on Hogwarts grounds a few days earlier. There was of course the matter of Jack Burnett and Flash Holmwood, she needed to *snicker* keep an eye on that one. "I just hope we can have a good time for once," she added with feigned concern. she knew full well this night was going to go to hell and she was probably going to help it along.

"I am just sad nobody thought to even write," she lamented. "It has been lonesome here without either of them," they who shall remain nameless -- Victor and Vladimir. She was the lone survivor of that trio, not that looked much like a survivor in a hair of heels, wearing a mini dress and red lipstick. "How did his father take it?" She continued on, taking his arm in both of her hands. "I heard Thaddeus sort of lost it when Vlad died, whisked you all away to other schools, insisting that none of you return and yet I see you... and him" his cousin Mathias Pride causing a fuss with a girl in pink. ]"Why did you come back?" A basic inquiry, but she was digging, she was checking in one could say. She wanted to know what had changed, what the new trajectory was and exactly where the pieces on the board were placed with this little reset.

She was dangerously beautiful, the sort of view you would die watching with a smile on your face. Yeah, he had a pretty good idea why Vladimir was so attached to Marion in spite of her muggle heritage. Even if they did not have a job to do, it was hard to tear his eyes away from the girl, it was as if he was under some sort of spell. Just not the sort that required a cauldron or the butchering of the Latin language.

"Well, sorry about that," Hess replied. "The ground was sort of pulled out from under us, I am glad that you seem to be thriving here in spite of everything that happened. Although it worries me, Hogwarts is not comprised of the most reasonable sorts of people." Yeah it was as if he was about to narrate an impending disaster, which was true.

"I miss them too," he admitted. Well, he never really knew Victor, but he seemed nice enough from the little he knew of him. He did not know of Vladimir and Victor's origin or how cruel the boy could be at times. It was a messy relationship that the two of them had, neither of them were truly innocent and in the end both of them suffered greatly for their sins. Perhaps too greatly.

"Uncle Thaddeus took it pretty bad I have to admit," he let out a sigh as he escorted her to the dancefloor. "He hired a group of hit wizards, insistent that Vladimir was murdered and that those responsible would be fed their steaming spleens." Yeah that was about right, although he conveniently left out the part where Pride had facilitated Vladimir's death. That was a family matter he intended to deal with personally.

"They made me, to be honest." Made him come back. He had no want or interest to return to this school, to this chaos and he had more grudges than friends. "But seeing you has made me glad," he lied. he was happy to see her technically, but that was a truth that would escape the mouth of any man with a pair of eyes. "And seeing Pride take the mantle of Champion will be entertaining for sure," Pride would never be able to satisfy the role. he was biting off more than he could chew and he would disappoint Uncle Thaddeus on his own. when that happens, he would shovel the topsoil over this grave. "And I need to get that hag," he gestured towards Erin, "out of here with my idle time. They made her vomit up slugs and think that it is all good now... it is not like hags pick random girls to change. They did not pick my second cousin for no reason and my first [Vladimir] for no reason."

“People always clap for the wrong reasons.”

She would crane her long neck as she spied the partygoers. A scene divergent from the one she saw through other eyes. She listed intently to Hess' answers, to the warning she would take to heart about dear Mr. Athantos. He was a little mad wasn't he? Well, they did technically overstep when they blackened his soul with that dark, terrible curse. But he should have kept his son better. He should have paid attention. What father does not notice a blackness creeping over their son's being? A man too set on his own aspirations to notice his ailing son until their final hours.

So no, she did not feel guilty for the part she played, if anything she resented them all. Every last one of them, even the pureblooded fool that hooked her arm. They never really thought about the consequences, they lived wearing blinders and never saw the scene for what it was. Vladimir died thinking that he came upon Victor and herself by happenstance. That she had interest in some spoiled blue-blooded brat. That she could have any affection for him after he made that deal with her future sisters because he childishly coveted her and could not handle the thought of rejection. He killed her and for that the only repayment would be his death in turn and she hoped it hurt like hell.

Nobody saved her when those slugs gnawed away at her animate, yet deathly form. Nobody noticed or cared because she did not take on such a retched visage.

She froze however when he mentioned the word 'hag.' No he did not know, how could he? He was too enamored by what he saw to truly care like the rest of them. "You know... I really need to take care of something real quick," she nodded towards the courtyard. "How about you 'make good' with Erin and see where the night brings you. If I recall I have seen rocks smarter than her," Marion urged but knw better than to push. She needed to break away and say hello to a former playmate.

Poe seemed a bit nervous, perhaps he wasn't used to crowds. He did seem like the sheltered type, and who could blame him considering the mother he had? That woman's picture was likely next to the whatever the term for the wizarding equivalent of a helicopter parent was in the dictionary.

He quirked a brow at Cain's response to his compliment before pushing a hand against his head to try and ruffle his hair. "What? I wasn't askin' for them, weirdo. Pretty sure your robes aren't gonna fit someone my size." Felix was literally an entire foot taller than Cain after all. It would be like forcing him to wear his kid sister's clothing.

"Great, so you're not busy yet and you can help me." Did he get a choice in the matter? Seemingly not. "You see that walking haircut of a guy over there?" Felix motioned towards Arjan, who was currently talking to a redhead. He could only assume he was telling her all about whatever he thought was interesting, like making kissy faces in the mirror or counting the hairs on his chest. Whatever other kind of weird shit the guy did.

"His name is Arjan. The guy is a fucking asshole and he's making my life a living hell. So we gotta teach him a lesson, don't we Poe?" He shot the younger boy a mischievous grin as he glanced towards the food table. "How do you feel about food fights?" It didn't really matter, because there was one currently happening and Felix wasn't going to miss out.

"Quick, grab something!" He urged the tiny first year. He went for something particularly messy. Perhaps a pastry with chocolate (will leave it up to the mods). Before he could second guess himself, he drew his arm back and sent the object flying through the air and in Arjan's direction. "Duck!" He told Cain, quickly shielding himself behind a few other party-goers.

Hunter didn't quite understand what the term "Ima" meant, but based on the context it was most likely either Judith's mother or father. He smiled, and gave out a slight chuckle, "Hehe, my mama sent me this tux just today. It seems we're both in similar situations." It seemed rather silly, and Hunter found it to be just that. Neither one seemed to have originally planned to show up, but it seems they didn't have a choice in the end. Perhaps that was for the best, who knew what was bound to occur. What fun or adventures will occur beneath the flowery scenery.

Hunter's anxiety went a little down on that funny thought, but he thought perhaps the two of them should just leave. Neither wanted to be here, but it also didn't seem or feel right. Hunter could hear his mother's voice ringing in his head again, and he thought back to how he really hasn't socialized extremely well with a large number of students. He suppose it was now or never, to at least try and brighten the mood. He wondered if Judith was upset that she was spending the ball here by the wall, or if she was just bored for some excitement.

Hunter took a deep breath. Normally when he's around one or two people he could handle himself, but the issue was the crowd. He had to block them out, he had to just try and focus on the things he needed to be watchful of or speak with. He lifted his face to look at Judith, the built-up courage he found swiftly diminished when he saw the slight blush on her face, but he went on to say what was needed: "W-well," The stuttering came back. Hunter slightly bit his tongue, and just tried to focus on Judith and her dashingly oversized dress, "Well, would you like to dance? If not, I believe there are some activities going on in the courtyard if you are more adventurous. Or how about we... we just talk." Hunter looked up at the surrounding blossoming flowers, planted across the wall. He reached up and picked a vibrant crimson rose. He slightly walked up to Judith, "I-if you don't mind," Hunter said. Although, in his mind, he was repeating the phrase "Just block them out" in order to ignore the surrounding crowds and sounds. He attempted to place the flower in her hair. His curiosity wondered though; about his actions. Hunter couldn't understand or reason why he was doing this. He wasn't even sure why he considered spending the ball with Judith. It seemed illogical, and yet comforting. His mother's heart and soul pounded through Hunter more than his father's ambition and grandmother's teachings, "What would you say is your favorite flower Ju- I mean Ms. Cohen?"

So, this was new. Phyllis always went to balls with friends, but Maxi was not a friend. Not yet, anyway, when they'd only just met a bit ago. Truth be told, though Phyllis would never tell anyone, she was a little nervous. This was something new, after all, but at least that meant there was just as much excitement bubbling around to drown out those nerves. New was uncertain, and that was where you found adventure. Of course she would happily go with Theo and the rest of her Ilvermorny friends, but opportunity called and she wasn't about to turn it down. Hopefully Theo had found fun people to go with; considering him, she wasn't worried about it.

Another thought that no one would hear: she kind of expected to lose this dare, bet, whatever it was. Phyllis had been to a handful of Hogwarts balls, highlights being her best friend getting decked by a door and the school's weird fixation with fire. There probably was going to be some fight or blaze going on, and technically that would mean she lost. But that wasn't really the point. The point was that Maxi had labeled the balls as dangerous, nothing more, and she was going to prove that they could have a good time, even if there was some crazy stuff going on. Were you really living if you didn't give things that weren't 100% safe a try?

Her pureblood parents would probably be thrilled to know she had a "date", not to mention she was 90% certain his family was pureblood as well. She honestly cared very little about that part of it, but she had exchanged last year's DIY toga for a nice teal-colored dress. In fairness, the toga had only happened because of the Greek dress-up theme. The fanciness of the dress was probably undermined by her choice of footwear--white high-tops (at least a Scourgify meant they were squeaky clean)--and she was aware the biker shorts she had on underneath were not the epitome of ladylike, but being able to move around without worrying about how the skirt was lying was the priority. And with about half of her hair pulled up so she wouldn't have to push it back all night, the look was complete, at least until she got that promised flower from Maxi.

Was she early? No, and no surprise there, Phyllis was basically never early for anything. Perhaps she just worked best in a bit of a time crunch. For Maxi's sake, she at least wasn't late, though there would be a lot of people by the time she arrived in the Great Hall. Peeking in, she realized that might be a bit of a problem. See, lots of people meant it was a lot harder to find just one person. Of the things Maxi had going for him, height was not one of them. She couldn't really rely on the quiet nature that had first caught her eye, either; there was a lot going on here--hah, was that a food fight?--but enough people were calm, unlike the hyped crowd watching the Goblet of Fire entries where indifference stuck out.

Ah, it was alright. He'd mentioned meeting at the entrance, so she figured she could wait here for a minute, and if he didn't come around then she could start looking for him. It wasn't as though she was in a rush, and it gave her a minute to admire the flowers, the tables of colorful food options. Following the example Maxi had set the other day, she looked up, and the ceiling was as impressive as it had been then, falling petals exchanged for bursts of fireworks. She had to wrinkle up her nose at that, since fireworks were Plott's annoying, over-the-top thing, but these weren't so bad, noiseless and not so demanding of attention.

And looking back down to survey the crowd, there it was: the Goblet of Fire itself. Glowing and beckoning, she reckoned it was the cause of at least half of the butterflies hanging out in her stomach. The wait was finally over, basically, and she knew as a mere third year her chances probably weren't great. But she was just dying to know, period, and she liked a lot of people so it was probable she'd be yelling extra loudly among the enthusiastic cheers for whoever was chosen to represent Ilvermorny.

As for the remaining half of those butterflies? They were for a certain someone she'd dared to come with her. Still lingering in the doorway, she went up on her toes, hoping to use every inch of her height to her advantage to catch a glimpse of the dark-haired French boy. Once she caught his eye, whether in her search or because he was making his way over, she'd give a wave and grin. Not terribly formal, and he did strike her as a kind of formal person, but this was a dare, not a date.

Volunteering to go to the Blossom Ball with a girl he'd found crying in the courtyard had seemed like such a simple thing when Julian had first offered. Now, standing just off to the side of the entrance to the Great Hall in the pinstripe suit his mum had sent (he'd immediately owled home asking for help after his encounter with Elizaveta), the task seemed unimaginably daunting. He'd never gone to anything like it before and he felt utterly unprepared. He didn't really even know what to expect, from the ball, or from an evening with a girl he barely knew. He figured there would be dancing, but he didn't really know how to dance, and the thought that she might expect him to lead made his stomach swoop unpleasantly.

He wished he'd thought to bring a book. Not just because he'd been standing in the same spot for the last twenty minutes with no sign of Elizaveta, with nothing more interesting to occupy his mind than idly watching the people milling in and out. But because books afforded him a strange sense of safety; if the evening proved unpleasant or overwhelming, he could simply retreat to a corner and learn something interesting. It had been how he'd coped with most formal events his parents had taken him to. Unfortunately, he rather suspected running off to read would be highly inappropriate in this case. And the pockets in his suit were not big enough to keep a book concealed.

Elizaveta's apology distracted him from his thoughts.

"It's alright," he said, returning her smile with a nervous one of his own. His hands felt suddenly clammy and he reflexively clenched them and shoved them into his pockets. "Getting ready seems a lot more complicated when you're a girl," he said, cocking his head towards her hair, which was up in an intricate pattern he would've been hard-pressed to describe. "Um, I like your dress." Julian had never been one to pay much attention to clothes, but the shade of purple she'd picked looked nice on her.

"Shall we go in, then?" he asked expectantly. He angled his arm slightly, unsure whether he should be offering it up to her. He wasn't entirely sure what the etiquette for these things was.

Valentin’s keen eyes immediately picked up a threat: a tall, muscular girl in an understated white dress. It was Erin Ryan, the one who had pushed Yefim into the lake. On sight, visions of the past washed over him, including the immaculately precise punch he’d thrown at her in retaliation. While that punch made about as much impact as a gnat trying to stop a train, just seeing the girl stirred in Valentin a strangely powerful feeling of jealousy. It was not that he coveted the girl’s strength, no more than he wanted to resemble the half-giant that had dethroned Valentin two years ago. The white seeker did not want to think about it and tried to ignore the “why,” opting instead to immediately take action. With a furtive glance at Yefim, who was looking away at the time, Valentin dug through his own pockets to find the ammunition he had brought to the potluck.

Image posted by the member

Valentin’s fans never did stop with their fan mail habit of sending vast quantities of chocolate frogs to the charming white seeker. Apparently there was some rumor that he was collecting the cards, which led to Valentin spending years trying to foist off the endless barrage of chocolate frogs on his friends, admirers, and this time– his enemy. Scrunching his nose in concentration, Valentin turned one chocolate frog box upside down in his hand and, with a flick of his fingertips, lifted the bottom of the box up to trap the frog between the card and the roof of the box. Gently, firmly, Valentin edged his fingers into position and– FLING!!– shot the frog off the card launchpad directly at Erin.

The white niffler could not afford to watch to see if his plan had succeeded. Rather, he would shove his hands back into his pockets and non-chalantly continue walking to the other side of the ballroom as if he were completely oblivious to the incident. He hoped the brawny girl would not be able to identify him as the aggressor, but instead become flustered and distracted with a likely chocolate stain on her lovely white dress. That should occupy her for at least several minutes, preventing her from approaching Yefim and stealing his precious attention away from Valentin. Of course, the niffler hadn’t thought about why he had done this on a split-second whim. His mind had already moved on and detected little Greta sneaking up on his flank. It reminded him of their practice maneuvers, back in the good old days when they played quidditch together.

Greta whispered to Valentin and plucked at his sleeve, awakening in the white seeker several months of pent-up adoration from missing her. With a high pitched coo, Valentin grabbed Greta in a huge, spinning hug with enough velocity to launch her feet if she did not resist. In response to her questions, Niffler only nodded with his trademark laughing smile. Как прекрасно, что она здесь (How wonderful it is that she’s here), thought Valentin. Whatever meekness Greta may have had about getting in trouble because of the Yefim Effect, Valentin was prepared to shoulder the burden entirely if he could get away with it.

«Не волнуйся, я защищу тебя.» (“Don’t you worry, I’ll protect you,”) said Valentin. It was true, too, or at least he would do his best to keep her safe-- Greta was still nothing less than sacred treasure to the boy regardless of the breakup of the team. Valentin, or Valya for short, always secretly wished for such opportunities to be called upon to aid his dear friends. It was one of the many reasons why Valentin enjoyed Yefim so much-- he never had a shortage of schemes in need of trusted co-conspirators.

Лёгок на помине! (Speak of the devil!), thought Valentin as Yefim spotted the pair. Yet, there was a temporary lull in the chaos– for a brief moment, all hell was not breaking loose as he greeted them. As Yefim laughed maniacally, Valya suppressed an urge to jump on the soup-covered boy with another enthusiastic hug, opting instead to observe Yefim’s face to sense what cogs were turning in his brain. Following Yef’s gaze, Valentin spotted Mikael entering, dressed from head to toe in black. Yefim made a snarky comment, but the albino seeker just nodded with a pleased smirk. Valentin enjoyed the look; indeed, black was even his favorite color. It reminded him of those peaceful nights when he would chase a golden snitch through the dark, back before his fall. Now, surrounded by three of his best friends, Valentin felt deeply happy. Watching Mik from afar, Valentin could not fail to notice the look coming from the other boy, however, staring down a curly-haired boy. Who could that be?

A chill shivered through Valentin as he watched Mikael approach the other boy. Mik didn’t seem to just be following some plan hatched by Yef, as was usually the case. Something was different, and Valentin subconsciously reached out his arm towards Greta’s shoulder as if it would put a protective aura around her. He could not just stand in front of her, however-- not when Mik might need backup at any moment. What was this inky feeling? What was evening happening inside Mikael these days? If Valya’s hand lighted on Greta’s shoulder, he would squeeze lightly and let go as if to say “stay back, stay here.” Valentin would be on the front line in Mik’s fights if he could help it.

Stepping quickly towards Mikael, Valentin steeled himself for possible combat. Anyone looking at Valentin could read his face as concerned and confused as to who the curly-haired kid was. Was this an earnest fight instead of the usual rumpus aimed at random bystanders? Valentin couldn’t tell. The blackness that was Mikael was so murky, and its darting gold spark so elusive.

Well wasn't Mathias Pride just the king of mixed messages? He was storming off the minute her lips were pressed against Levi's cheek. Was this not what he wanted? He had ghosted her for months, told her their relationship was fleeting but good while it lasted. In front of the entire school. How was that not a break up? Ignored and degraded, the minute someone else had shown interest he had gotten angry.

No, that's not how this worked. He didn't get to be upset. She wasn't supposed to care that he had entered his name in the Goblet of Fire. It was his own choice, his own, idiotic choice.

... So why did it pain her to think about it? Why was it that, when she closed her eyes, all she could see what his bashed in face laying on the grass of the campgrounds? Merlin, this idiot was going to get himself killed and she wasn't done yelling at him. She looked at Levi, then looked at Matt. She knew she wasn't the only one who cared about him, she had seen the pain in Levi's eyes. He would not want him to do this either. "Levi… He’s going to die if he enters the Hexwizard. I… I know he’s been an asshole but… We have to stop him. I know you still care about him too, I saw it in your face… it’s okay." Levi must still be in love with Matt. If they had dated. The entire thing was confusing, but either way… Her voice was shaky as she released her hold on him and stormed after the stubborn former Slytherin.

"... MATHIAS." She shouted after him, her voice shaking, "Withdraw your name. They can find another damn champion." A hand would try to grab his robes and stop him from leaving. "Y-You... YOU'RE GOING TO GET YOURSELF KILLED AND Y-YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO DIE, MATT." She screeched at him, as if she had any control over that.

If he didn't stop or he managed to hit her with his flipendo, she would grab her wand from the pocket within her gown and cast a slowing charm on him the minute she was able to so she could catch up to him. "Arresto Momentum!"
