so much for being alone
january 5, 2022. wednesday. train ride back to hogwarts after xmas break.
if you want to hop in, just owl me! room for one or two more people.
thank you @amelia breakwater and @draven mirador for hopping in! thread is now private.Ivy was nearly late for the train ride to Hogwarts. It was very much her own fault - she had locked herself in her room that morning in a panic, faced with the horrible reality that today was the day and she was actually going back. Being only fourteen and knowing only the most basic of locking charms, her parents had unlocked the door in no time and all but dragged her to King's Cross. Ivy had screamed at them and tried to hex them and even thrown a vase at their heads, but to no avail. Like it or not, the 14 year old was going back to Hogwarts today.
As Clemence and Oliver pushed her onto the train without so much as a goodbye, Ivy could think of one thing she was proud of: this entire time, she hadn't cried at all, not once. Although, she reflected, perhaps that wasn't quite something to boast about, because she hadn't cried even when her sister died. Her cousin Iris was beside herself, but Ivy had simply gone very, very still and turned white as a sheet. She hadn't been able to cry since. The truth was, something had gone cold and dead inside of her when the news came, and she was doing her very best not to feel the emotional pain. Perhaps she had done a little too well in that endeavour.
The ground began to moved beneath her feet and Ivy realised, with a start, that she had simply been standing in the corridor without moving, staring off into space, for the past few minutes. She shook her head, as if trying to shake herself out of it. Act normal, she told herself firmly. No one would want to be friends with the weird girl who spaced out all the time - it was bad enough that her sister's death would be looming over her head like dark cloud all the time. Although to be honest, Ivy wasn't sure if she even wanted friends at Hogwarts. She didn't even want to be at Hogwarts.
Thankfully, there was an empty compartment right next to her, and Ivy slipped inside quickly before anyone else could take it. She grabbed a book and curled up on the seat to read, facing away from the door. Hopefully people could take the hint and leave her alone.@avery gallows @haven bohannon @everly charlton

so much for being alone

Today would not be the day Ivy would get her wish.
Haven had her ridiculously large trunk in tow, an overstuffed bag weighing down her back. Her mother had taken the break as an opportunity to spoil her (as if she already didn't, even at school) and had sent her with more sweets that she knew what to do with- and that was coming from Haven. She loved candy! So, she resolved that she'd need even more friends to share it with.
With a sunny disposition strong enough to make someone gag, Haven barged into the compartment containing one very sad girl. She could read the room and tell that the girl definitely did not want her in there, so naturally, Haven set her backpack down on the seat and then, with great difficulty, heaved her trunk onto the storage shelves above the seats before plopping down in her seat. She dug around in her bag for a moment before procuring a comically large candy, much larger than she knew what to do with. ("What am I supposed to do with this, Mama? It's bigger than my whole head! It's bigger than Merlin! It'll take me a million and two years to eat this!" To which her mother simply replied, "You had better get started, then.") However, the girl seemed like she'd need it a lot more than Haven. Plus, the staff probably didn't want a sugar-high Haven on the first day back. That was more of a second-day thing.
Carefully, she placed the candy next to the other girl, her grin even brighter than her strawberry hair. The sweater she wore, although it was a light shade of purple, was still very in-your-face. "Hi, I'm Haven Bohannon, and this is my rock Barnaby," she introduced herself, pulling out the rock from her pocket. It had googly eyes glued onto it, one of the many craft activities her mother had done with her over the break. "You look familiar, but I'm really bad with names. Or faces. One of the two. I can't remember which. You should remind me, and then we can be best friends for the rest of the school year. Guaranteed. Hey, do you wanna see a picture of my car?" Have dug around in her bag until she found a polaroid picture, showcasing a very sparkly black cat. "His name is Merlin and I love him with my entire heart. I'm not allowed to bring him with me though. He doesn't really like other cats and would be too sad when I go to class, so he stays at home, but my parents always send me a new picture when they send me letters. Which is pretty much every day. Hey, if you'd like, I can have my mom send you something in her next care package. Do you like fuzzy socks? We could have matching ones!" Haven was about to talk the poor girl's ear off, but she wouldn't really notice if she was a little irritated by it. She pulled a lollipop out of her bag stuffed with snacks to lick as she continued to rattle off everything that popped into her brain.
"We're going to be great friends, you know. I'll let you borrow my socks sometime... even a band-aid if you need. I got some new ones, too! Not just the Paw Patrol- Peppa Pig, and there's some with characters from some new movies that came out- Muggle movies, of course. I didn't get a chance to watch all of them, but I did see a couple! They're a lot more fun than just using a healing spell. Not as fast, granted, but they're so colorful and fun. Not as fun to rip off, but still..." she trailed off a bit, obnoxiously licking the lollipop. "You know, I have this one flower crown that would look absolutely gorgeous on you. I left it in my dormitory though, so I'll have to give it to you once we get back to Hogwarts. Does that sound okay?" Finally, Haven shut up for a little while, allowing the girl a chance to speak as Haven herself turned some of her attention back to the lollipop.
"We'll have lots of fun this year, I'm sure of it."

The fanfare-filled goodbye from her parents and caretaker before boarding the Hogwarts Express filled Amelia with a small sense of irritation that made itself visible when she accidentally slammed the compartment door she stood before open with too much force.
She grimaced. A lovely first impression, she was sure.
Two girls sat in the compartment, one with a blank face and dark hair, the other ‘brighter’ looking and licking a lollipop. They both looked older than her.
“Do you mind?” She asked softly, but not shyly.
Having lived a life that granted her some unreasonable confidence, Amelia didn’t wait for a reply before taking a step in. It would be harder to kick her out, with that. When she didn’t think either occupant would object, she dragged her trunk in behind her and pushed it with some difficulty onto the storage spaces.
Eying both occupants again, Amelia made her way into a corner seat, leaned as far away from the other two as she could, and took out a notebook from a pocket to pretend to read. Better to stare at blank pages than to converse with strangers. She made sure that the cover of the notebook had her name on it, so that she wouldn’t have to be asked for an introduction.
From behind the notebook in her hands, Amelia peeked at her compartment buddies again. One of them, the dark-haired one, radiated something that seemed to say “do not talk to me”. The other one simply radiated sunshine.
Amelia looked away. Yeah, as she thought, blank pages were the best. Blank pages didn’t radiate anything.

Avery needed a break from her break. Her parents, disappointed with the lack of literature, arithmetic, and anything they considered useful in the curriculum, (Even a witch needs to know her Plath from her Wilde!) put the girl through the wringer. They recruited one of the PhD students staying over break to work on her Algebra skills and worked to pull together a suitcase full of writings they expected the girl to read before she came back for Easter.
The girl was vaguely disappointed. She never got a chance to tell her parents about her accomplishment of becoming a broom racing captain, something Avery elected to keep a surprise in her letters, and only got to spend a few minutes in the community garden she all but ran before she left in September.
Her parents did not even have the chance to take the train from Oxford to London with her, in her absence, they had started doing traveling lectures and had to head to Edinburgh the next day. Avery, ever a pleaser, went along with a smile and nod, choosing to simply read one of the many books (The Great Gatsby was her choice of the day) on the train to London as she looked out the window and dreamed of bigger things.
It had turned out, of course, that Avery had fallen asleep on the train and that it had been in the station for over an hour before a staff member found and woke her up. She quickly gathered her things and checked her watch as she made her way over to the area between platforms nine and ten. She bit her lip, shoot. The first year was planning on meeting with her fellow broom racing captain for a quick coffee or bite to eat to start making a training plan, but that does not seem to happening anymore.
Glancing up towards the sky, and muttering an apology that she hopes makes its way to Ami, Avery slips into platform 9 and 3/4. She hops onto the train and imminently starts looking around for the other captain to reschedule. Eventually, she simply gives up on the search and slinks into the nearest compartment.
On entrance, Avery notices a sullen-looking girl, one who seemingly would rather be anywhere but here, a happy-go-lucky girl who's sugary-sweet energy (and the rainbow Lolli she is sucking) is almost sickening, and a third, small girl, staring into the blank pages of a notebook.
Avery rolls her eyes, the former two will be annoying, but can be dealt with, the latter though, she simply seems idiotic. "Blank pages won't do anything for your intellect darling, try a board book next time? I recommend Goodnight Moon, extremely riveting content."
She drops her eye contact with the small one and smooths her clothing as she sits. Avery retrieves her book from her bag and picks up where she left off.

Well.
This little situation, if it were a different situation, would have been hilarious.
After the death of her cousin Alison had hit the family, Everly had taken it upon herself to cheer Ivy up. Everly wasn't as close with anyone outside of her immediate family, other than Ivy, but she knew how hard Ivy must've been making of the news. In fact, her family wasn't close at all with anyone outside of their immediate relations. She'd always wondered why but decided it wasn't her place to ask just yet.
The moment Everly had spotted the head of brown hair that was unmistakably Ivy's, she'd made a beeline for her. She realized something was wrong when she saw Ivy's face.
It was at that moment that Ivy had conveniently disappeared into the crowd of other students boarding the train.
"Ivy! Hey, Ivy! Ivy!" she hollered, but to no avail, for she wouldn't be able to find her cousin amongst the other people no matter how hard she looked. "Gosh darn it, come on," Everly groaned. Ivy couldn't go through Everly Therapy™ if she didn't show up, which was already proving to be a problem.
She figured she would find Ivy later somewhere in the compartments, and boarded along with everyone else, as standing around waiting for Ivy to magically appear didn't seem to help.
Ivy, however, had other plans. Everly spent a good several minutes searching but wouldn't be able to find her cousin, her trunk following its owner dedicatedly as Everly trudged down the same hallway three times, all while muttering angrily.
Everly woke with a start when the horns went off and the train started moving in the middle of her fourth lap. She needed to find Ivy, and preferably rather fast. She'd been in this situation before, and it wasn't going to turn out pretty.
Like the universe had been reading her mind, she so happened to stumble upon Ivy huddled up in a little corner, surrounded by people. Everly had almost missed it, stumbling backward with her eyes squinted.
A blonde girl who probably peed sparkles was rattling her head off, a little brown-haired girl with her face hidden with a large notebook, some moody brown-haired girl who'd probably eaten a lemon before this, and another unnaturally cheerful brown-haired boy who hadn't seemed to arrive shortly before her. This was a wonderful crowd.
She huffed out a laugh underneath her breath out of disbelief.
With her trunk in hand, Everly slid open the door rather loudly to greet Ivy in an imitated sunny voice,
"Ivy! There you are!"
