Fencing was an unfamiliar sport for the Wizarding world. Although the idea of it was always bound by aristocrats or people who had significant taste, which may not seem that unfamiliar after all. It is more than hitting targets, as Fencing is often called "chess at the speed of light." Every attack is a question; every parry is an answer.

On the other half of the training area, significantly separated from the others by a series of low wooden barriers, lies the fencing area. Two narrow strips of packed earth, measuring 14 meters long and 2 meters wide, make up the perfect setup for an intense match. Surrounding this are carefully placed boundary markers, placed around each strip. The piste serves its purpose, and there the match will begin.

The crowd circled at a distance around the match. Where the players took their steps onto the fencing strip, each opposite the other. The tension was hard not to give away. Each held their foil.

Chatt took position between them. Raising his hand.

“En Garde!”

Each student poised themselves into position.

“Ready?”

A pause.

“And Begin!”

Practicing duelling was always an activity she was up to, regardless of the weather and season. But fencing? Fencing was not something she had been able to enjoy often. Between her many responsibilities and other subjects, even as a young girl, it hadn’t been a sport she had had the opportunity to enjoy. Sure, she had learnt and retained certain movements, but she wasn’t an avid practiced of the sport.

Yet, at Summer Camp, she had the opportunity to try and do it once more. Actually, this time competing against an opponent. And even though she didn’t have much experience, it was a welcome break from duelling. So when she could, signing up for the sport was what she did.

After all that, coming to terms that she would be on another piste wasn’t hard. Eugenia received some protective gear, which she put on, and then her foil. It was beautiful, in its own right. Adjusting her hold on it, she practiced a few lunges right before entering the piste.

A younger boy was the moderator, and a younger girl was her opponent. Actually, that girl was from Durmstrang, as if Fate was meant to test her. Her sister was supposed to go there and truthfully, they were quite the militaristic school. She knew it well, not only from her mother’s accounts, but from some acquaintances she had as well, who happened to be students. It took a lot of effort to keep her composure steady, for a rift formed inside her.

Just like in duelling, however, she stifled the agony. No one was meant to see. Eugenia was finding her footing and easily found her place. Memory is practice and practice makes perfect. Just to hit the opponent, she spoke in Russian. “May the favoured one win.” A statement spoken measuredly, yet not with malice. It was even, like Durmstrang’s strategy.

Not one to taunts, she chose not to indulge in it. And she stood ready.

Fencing match #5 Summer Camp 2026
Alicia had no idea what she had signed up for but yet here she was with some kind of sword in her hand, getting ready to fight a girl older than her. Alicia smiled at her opponent. “Good luck to you as well.” Alicia got in the fencing position following what the older girl did and got ready to start fencing! She was doing this for her father, since he had fenced when he was younger. He had always talked highly of the sport, had always glazed himself, saying he was the best fencer at his school back in the day. Now while he said that, he had never showed her his awards. However, she was using his own sword. Alicia pulled her hair back in a quick ponytail to make sure it didn't get in the way and she eyed the girl she was going against. She looked competent. Looked like she had played this sport before, unlike Alicia over here who had never picked up a sword before telling her dad that she was signing up for fencing. Cygnus had them proceeded to teach her everything she needed to know in less than three days. Alicia hoped she remembered everything.

Alicia does lunge
(1d20 + ACC) 11 + 8 = 19 > 17 (Success)
Eugenia does Retreat
(1d20 + EVA) 13 + 10 = 23 > 17 (Success)
Eugenia > Alicia
Eugenia evades successfully.
“And Begin!”

He wasn't the only one handling this event, but would he ever get tired in saying those words each time. Chatt could only ponder on the thought. But of course, eyes on the game.

Alicia was quite the feisty one. Lunging entirely onto the fourth year, possibly with no thought if she was a senior or even higher. He'd give a silent nod. That strategy wouldn't given some sort of competition, but Eugenia had played it safe. Good for her. She'd dodge her junior's attacks quite steady. Reminded him of a meme he'd seen once. An Asian girl with a red dress, she'd dodge the baton quite elegantly side to side. If you know you know.

But thoughts wouldn't get him nowhere. Like this match. Each hit and attack Alicia gave, Eugenia evaded. Eventually, a foot was out of the piste. His eyes reacted, followed by his voice.

"Halt!" He'd quickly let out. As the fencers went back to their positions, he'd cross his arms, the mind drowned in a thought.

Fencing in the Wizarding world wasn't that serious right... Maybe he wouldn't just award points. The long wait was quite awkward for anyone else.
He'd clear his throat.

"No points given." He'd let out a sly smile.
The crowd may be confused, especially muggles who are quite knowledgeable in this sport. But Chatt couldn't give a damn. It's magic.

"En Garde!"
He'd look to his left, and his right. Each in their positions.

"Ready? Fence!"

From the one duel she had been in, Eugenia preferred to stay on the offensive. But as the match began, she found herself having to dodge. Her opponent, Alicia had responded to her verbally, to which Eugenia took no notice, and physically, attacking her energetically. If Eugenia was meant to be as bouncy, it might as well be in retreat, something she knew she could do given that casting in duelling requires a mouth; she couldn’t really cast with her tongue tied.

And so, back she went, each attack artfully evaded. When her foot was out of the piste, the moderator called them to halt. Seeing that her torso was intact, the heiress happily returned to her place and stood ready once again. She had to change tactics.

Yeah, the whole thing was exhausting and she knew her luck was probably not going to be on her side. Yeah, her head hurt. But couldn’t she attempt to get a point now? Dodging all that couldn’t have happened in vain. And the possibilities on what to do this round were endless, figuratively. In reality, she could calculate about three or four different positions she could go in, all with massively different outcomes depending on the timing.

Swords fighting with tiny metal blades that made absolutely no sense in the context of weapons in the real world was awfully more complicated that needed. Yet, it wasn’t as if she had an option now that she had stepped on the piste. She would only have to prove to herself that signing up was not some grave mistake.

Alicia had decided to attack Eugenia using a classic move. The older girl however avoided all her attempts to hit her and kept moving back. Finally, Alicia had forced her back enough that the girls foot went out of the piste. Alicia allowed herself a small, satisfied smile as she turned and got back into position. This was fun if she had to be truthfully honest. It was dangerous (but what Hogwarts sport isn't dangerous?), yet it was exhilarating. Alicia's adrenaline was through the roof, but she didn't mind. It made her stay on her feet, made her able to stay focused on dodging and attacking. Alicia remembered that back in the day her own father had fenced. He had mentioned loving it and being good t it. Alicia had wanted to sign up to make her father proud of her. Because right now he wasn't showing her that much attention. It was all on her newly graduated sister, Cassidy. Cassidy had graduated from Durmstrang with top grades and was now going in to be a curse breaker like their father. So now Alicia had to up her game to show her father that she could be just as good if not better than Cassidy. And this was one way.

(1d20 + WIS) [d20 : 16] + 10 = 26 > 17 Success
Alicia does Parry

Eugenia > Alicia Eugenia points
Last round was a fumble for all, of course—for Chatt it wasn't. He was seeing it up front, across the barriers of spectators. He was still, in between each of them.

Both parties didn't back down in their roles. In fact—points not given might've been the maximum effort they could show rather than the former. He'd yell out for the game to start once more.

Eugenia attacked forthwith, recollecting her posture and letting it out on her attacks, but not without boiling tactics up in her sleeve. Or gear in this matter. Alicia parried with precision, focused on where the foil would go next, meeting there halfway to counter it. Eugenia pushed forward, but took it back. A quick move whereas Alicia couldn't see. The move set caused Alicia to correct her reaction, but in spite of that, her vest bled out red, just how the color-changing charm would work swell.

"Halt! Once more. "Attack from the left, touch. Point left."

It would take a while before they got back to their positions, each step carrying acknowledgment on each other, but also their profound resolution. A reset back into their positions. Each exert their combat through the foils in their hand and the gear that close in on them.

"En Garde! Ready... Fence!"

Long before she ever joined Hogwarts, Eugenia was told trickery is a measured art. One cannot use it excessively, or they’d become mistrusted by the peers. On the opposite part of the spectrum sits a naïve child, doing exactly as it’s told. Trickery is a sum actions, but what you need to perform them is cunning. If you are not cunning, then you will not succeed in life, because no one will hand things to you. You must earn them. Even if you are kind and honest, you need to have some aces up your sleeve. Predictability is like a plague you must avoid. If they know what you’ll do, they’ve cracked you, and they’ll use you. So, you give them a false impression, or at least, not the full picture.

She took charge this time, choosing not to be evasive like a child running from a stick. She’d play they game. When she could start attacking, she’d do it with cunning. Such valuable life lesson.

Lunging forward, she watched Alicia try to parry and stop her foil. After being deflected once or twice, her foil found an opening. Rather, it found an opportunity to make one. She launched a false attack, her foil heading towards her opponent, but changing direction at the last minute. Alicia may have tried to parry her way out, but she was faster, striking her opponent. A wave of satisfaction washed over her seeing the third year’s best turn red. She sighed when the point was given and rolled her shoulders. More to win.

Brutally tactical.

Fencing match #5 Summer Camp 2026
Alicia was not at all surprised that the girl knew how to fence. And fence well too. She had started to attack Alicia right away and the young girl immediately started to doge and spin away from the sword. The adrenaline was keeping her on her toes and she ducked and spun as much as possible, using her own sword to block the strikes from the other girl. However, Alicia lost her footing on one particularly dramatic spin. The sword from the other girl punctured her suit and the fake blood bloomed. Alicia straightened up and gave a smile to Eugenia. "Good one. Impressive." And with those words, Alicia started on her own attack. The adrenaline was fueling her attacks as she inched her way towards the girl, wielding her own sword like it was her lifeline. She needed to win this match, not for herself but for her father. To earn her fathers pride of her. She was actually the only daughter in the family that enjoyed sports. Charlotte was a book girl, and Cassidy was the popular girl who spent more time with her friends and her boyfriend than worried about sports of any kind. Alicia was definitely the tomboy of the family.
