OOC FAQ Duelling Questions

Josh Ericson wrote: 2 Aug 2026, 08:09 Hello, I'm a little confused on how the action search for wand works. How do you determine if it succeeds or fails, and does the evasion bonus you gain play a part in finding the wand?
Hi Josh! Search for Wand is an action that automatically succeeds if you take it, reducing the number of rounds a player is disarmed for (so if the duration was 1 round, they get it back; if it was 2 rounds, it reduces to 1 round). The evasion bonus simply protects them from other spells that might be targeting them that round.

Nope! The only thing that makes you ineligible for rewards is not posting two times. (Excluding if you’re fainted because you don’t have to post after your character faints. :))

OOC FAQ Duelling Questions
Hello! Could someone explain for me how the AFC works? In cases like the Cracker Jinx, where I’ve seen a +2/-1 AFC, what does it mean? And does the Auto Fail counter stack additively, or do you do separate rolls for each source of AFC? (Spell Spread, Protego, Confringo)?

Secondly, for Ebbublio, if a spell beats the AP DC and pierces the bubbles, is the player still affected by the spell’s effects or does the bubble just pop?

Lastly, I understand the damage calculation for Surpo Energia, but how is the stamina reduced by 1 each round? Like, does the target lose 100 HP per round?

Sorry if the questions seem too specific, and thank you for your help.

Hi Eugenia! Long post ahead, please let me know if any of it is still confusing.

AFC, or our lovely auto-fail counters, increase when someone uses the spell/ability and decrease when they don't. They are totally separate from auto-fails caused by Unsettling Aura and some Wandmaker abilities and also separate from each other (e.g. a 30% Spell Spread AFC and a 20% Confringo AFC are rolled separately, not as 50%). They work something like this:
  • Someone casts the Cracker Jinx, the +2/-1 means they now have x2 Cracker Jinx AFCs. If they try to cast Cracker Jinx the next round, there's a 20% chance it fails.
  • It's the next round and there are three possibilities:
    1. They cast the Cracker Jinx and it doesn't auto-fail or fail the WDC. They gain two more AFCs (+2), so have a 40% chance to fail next round.
    2. They cast the Cracker Jinx and it auto-fails. The AFC doesn't go up or down, so they still have a 20% chance for next round.
    3. They don't cast the Cracker Jinx or it fails the WDC. They lose one AFC (-1), so have a 10% chance to fail next round.
You can also read about AFCs more here.

For Ebublio, the duration of the bubble is not dependent on whether or not the player trapped inside pierces it by beating the AP DC, so the bubble would not pop.

Surpio Energia decreases stamina but does not decrease HP with it beyond the initial spell damage. It prevents players from healing back to their full stamina, essentially. You can see an example of the spell in action in this duel (Deterioration Hex hits in Round 1, stamina is lost starting in Round 2). Because of the damage the spell does when it hits, I don't think we've ever had anyone at full health when their stamina decreases, but it that case they would just be over their max HP like Paragon of Health (e.g. 1000/900 HP). Note that a player's and team's overall HP are still calculated with their original HP value, so that 1000/900 HP would be listed as 100% health, not 111%.

@Aislin Darragh

In this duel, where one duellist has paragon of health, the teams total hp percentage exceeds 100%. Is this something I’ve missed?

Also, if in round one, a player gets hit by the deterioration hex, and it is removed two rounds after, will they heal up to 700hp or 800 hp, assuming their original hp was 1000?

I’ve got another question: for spells like protego, do they take effect from the round they are cast? Like, for Tarantallegra basic one but still, the stat debuffs begin from the next round. Then, in the duel you mentioned above, the protego started having effect from round one, when it was cast, and the deterioration hex rolled a protego d10. So does it take effect earlier? If yes, which spells do that as wellbesides impedimenta, for which’s stat loss you roll the previous round and take into effect the next?

For the AFC, I understood pretty well now. Just a question: an AFC of 2 is a 20% auto fail? And, in confringo, with an AFC of +2/-2, if cast in round one, then it presents a 20% auto fail for the next round cast, but if it isn’t cast in round two and is casted on the third round, the AFC will drop to 0 at the end of the second round, only to go back to 20%?
And does the AFC count for the first cast as well, or just all subsequent casts?

Piercing ebublio is like penetrating the shield, thanks.

Last question, and hope I ain’t bothering :sweatingbullets: . If Protego is penetrated, does it stop existing even if student chooses to maintain it?

Paragon of Health is not an exact comparison to what the Deterioration Hex does, sorry about the confusion. I was only saying it's alike in exceeding the total HP, but they operate very differently for how we calculate percentages. What you see in that duel is correct.

I assume by 'removed' you mean the Healing Spell was used, rather than the duration ending. If a player has 1000 max HP to start and the Deterioration Hex is removed on the second round of its effect (so Round 3 if it hit in Round 1), they could be healed to a max of 900 HP (they lose -1 stamina in Round 2). By our order of operations, healing removes the effect before the effect is applied for the round, so they wouldn't lose more stamina in Round 3.

Protego takes effect in the round it is cast, rather than in the next round like many other spells. To identify what kind of spells do this, look for the [Quick] tag and/or a note in the duration saying the spell is applied the same round (some of the tags needed updating, which should happen in the next month).

Confringo also has a +2/-1 AFC, but I'm assuming you were maybe looking at Protego's +2/-2 AFC. If Protego is cast in Round 1, there's a 20% chance to fail casting it again in Round 2. If Protego is not used in Round 2, then the AFC drops back to 0 for Round 3. The AFC does not apply to the first cast, only subsequent casts, because it is a measure to prevent spamming.

If Protego is penetrated, it just means that specific spells get a targeting phase, it doesn't disable the shield (so if the shield caster is targeted multiple times in one round, their shield can still defend them against the other spells). You cannot maintain a shield, only choose to cast it again the next round (with the AFC risk).

Omg, thank you @Aislin Darragh sorry, yeah I meant protego, I was confused

Last question and I mean it, I’m so sorry for making you answer at ungodly hours. Do debuffs get accounted for as the last thing in the order of operations?
