Paranoia had been passed down from one Mirador man to the next for as long as they could remember. It wasn't trained into them, socialized like so many of the other traits. It simply...was. They learned to live with it. Little rituals followed: protection charms, systematically locked doors, pulled curtains, and minimal staff. Abbadon's paranoia had come in the form of secrets. The journalist kept his belongings with him with a religious sort of tenacity. Perhaps it was the sensitive nature of his work that had awoken the trait in him. Or perhaps it had always been active, and the high-profile career amplified it to a noticeable amount.

Draven's paranoia was different. It came in the form of triple-checked locks, an aversion to food he hadn't prepared himself, difficulties sleeping, and showering. Hogwarts, although shrouded in protection spells, couldn't keep the boy's head from running wild. There was only so much he was willing to trust magic he hadn't cast himself.

And so there he was.

Sitting with the sixth-year spell book open on his lap. The dorm was empty save for Deimos, who'd been an unwilling witness to hours of failed casting attempts.

It was a long shot, a desperate grasp for stability. A reach for the control he felt slipping between his fingers. He didn't even have use for the Patronus spell, not really. Nor could he say his head was clear enough to cast it. But he needed something to focus on. Something to keep his mind busy so thoughts of his father wouldn't take over.

Perhaps, if he poured his energy into an impossible-to-cast spell, all his other homework and chores would seem minuscule by comparison. Perhaps, he'd grow so frustrated with failing the DADA essay would look attractive by comparison.

Draven groaned, slumping backwards in his bed. He hit the pillow with a satisfying thud. Happy memories had him stuck. Nothing he'd reached for could conjure more than a transparent mist, incapable of holding form for even a few seconds. It was a bit cliché, a bit emberassing, to say he couldn't think of much. 'Poor me, ' he thought, resisting the urge to fling the book across the room. 'Poor, poor me. What a sad little wretch.'

He wasn't even a particularly sad person. Apathetic, maybe. Angry? Sure. But not sad. Memories of afternoons spent holed up with Gladrag in his store were at the forefront of his mind. Putting together fabric, mending suits, enchanting dresses, and wooing customers. Those had been good times. Not good enough, apparently. Though he could honestly say he only felt like himself- his real self, in that store. Surrounded by fabric and holding onto a cup of tea.

His wand disagreed. He looked at it now, turning it to catch the light. It had been a gift, a frivolous one at that. Thunderbird tail feather, spruce wood. This wand was elegant and powerful, unwieldy at times. Unlike its predecessor, it didn't suffer mediocrity. Didn't allow him to cast if he wasn't fully focused. The spells it conjured were raw power, frightening at times in their intensity and potency.

Being unable to cast tore him apart. Summers were the worst. After nearly a year of daily use, he was forced to return to three months without magic. He likened it to missing a limb - disorienting and uncomfortable, a time period he'd grown to dread.

Curiosity tugged at him.

Closing his eyes, Draven pictured stepping onto the train. The return to Hogwarts, chaotic and loud as it was, had become a day to celebrate. He walked himself through it - locking the compartment door and settling in with his book. He thought of the horseless carriages (which weren't really horseless) clanking about as they made their way towards the castle. The relief which fluttered in his chest as he descended towards the common room, holding onto a railing that hadn't passed any safety regulations in the past decade.

And finally, stopping before his dorm. Finding the room exactly the way he and Kith had left it months before, with Deimos' webs still hanging off the windowsill and kelp swaying beyond the floor-to-ceiling window. He pictured sunlight as it filtered through the murky green water, reflections dancing playfully across the walls and casting the room in a dreamlike haze.

Careful to hold on to that image, Draven described the circle with the tip of his wand. Ex-PEK-toh Pa-TRO-num. He'd said the words so many times he could recite them in his sleep by then. Ex-PEK-toh Pa-TRO-num. Ex-pek-toh-

"Expecto patronum," Draven said, the vision of his dorm following a perfectly drawn circle. Light burst forth from the tip of his wand, milky fog filling the room. The boy nearly dropped his wand, sitting up as if he'd been struck. He hadn't expected it to work- and yet there it was. Ethereal. Beautiful. Out of this world. Glimmering softly, the fog vanished a second later.

He'd found it. He'd found the memory.

Trembling, Draven slid off his bed.

The memory came easier this time, details popping vividly before his eyes. The smell of candle wax filled his lungs. Parchment paper underneath his fingers, Kith's dry laugh. A cool draft tickles his skin.

"Expecto Patronum," Draven said, his voice steady, a practiced swirl of his wand following through.

And there it was.

Feathered wings and a curved beak, the creature was huge. Two tails wrapped elegantly around its feet, saber-sharp claws digging into the Merlin dorms' flooring. It was stunning. Intelligent eyes shone with a light of their own, blue haze reaching every corner and casting strange shadows around them. The bird- the one that had been watching him his entire life. The one at the core of his wand, who'd seen every failure, every late night, every victory. The one that had kept him in check- guided him through thick and thin, demanding respect and returning the favor.

His first friend. His first guide. And the one who'd be with him till his death.

Draven smiled. It didn't smile back, but it seemed pleased. The relief of having finally done something right made Draven lightheaded.

The sun was blinding, its heat drumming down the fields — summer was in the air. Crickets and other insects buzzed loudly in the surrounding trees, ripe fruits ready to crumble down the branches. A light humidity lingered on the skin, beads of water pearling down the temples as they ran. Neera was in front of her, laughing so hard her breath caught in her throat, and they both had to stop until she regained control of her lungs. Grass curled gently around her limbs, hand digging into the soil as her sister was laying on her back, arms raised in the air, drawing strange patterns in the skies.

“What are you seeing?” she yawned, leaving the trunk of the tree she had been leaning against to drop on her sister with her full weight. Neera yelped, struggling like a tiny slug to get out of her embrace, and soon giggled filled the air as she pushed her twin sister away. Malaika capitulated, instead falling on the grass, laying opposed to her, with their head touching.

Neera raised a hand once again pointing at swirly clouds in the clouds. “It's us, see?” The tip of her index aimed at two clouds disposed in such a way they appeared to mirror their position. If one were to use a large dose of imagination, and narrow their eyes until shapes gain to blur, one could indeed discern the shapes of a firefly and a dragonfly, interlinked. A weight sat on Malaika's chest, heart constricting under the weight of the love she carried for her twin sister.

“I see a deformed bunny, that must be yours,” she teased, laughing when she felt her sister sit back up, glaring at her. “Oh yeah?” Neera retorted, mischief glimmering in her onyx eyes. “Well the first one to reach the front door gets to eat the last piece of cake.” Malaika felt her heart drop. Their mother only baked this cake approximately once a year, and every bite was sacred. “You can't do that, it's my sli- HEY!”

Her sister was already running. Jumping to her feet, Malaika followed suit, trailing as fast as she could. Luckily she had somehow inherited the tall gene of the family, and her long strides soon caught up with her sister's disloyal start. Reaching her level, a few meters away from the house, Malaika jumped on her once more, sending the two girls toggle down the scream in a concert of yelps and giggles. They halted at the foot of the hill, breathless, laying on their back once more. Their two clouds appeared to have found them again.

“GIRLS!”

Their mother's voice echoed throughout their garden, promising new delicious snacks freshly out of the oven, perhaps even another cake, if she had felt nostalgic of the eaten-in-three-seconds previous one. Back on her feet, Malaika helped her sister up, and hand in hand they ran towards the front door, laughing.

A tear rolled down her cheek, as she gripped her wand so tight her fingers might be forever imprinted with its shape. Her happiest memory. The remnants of that day still lingered in her heart, the sheer joy, love and happiness she had felt overwhelming. Her firefly. There was not a day that went without her dearly missing her. Chasing away the pain, Malaika took a deep breath, focusing on the positive emotions this day, this moment had brought her. She let them invade her body, inch by inch, until all that was left was happiness.

“Expecto Patronum.”

Light surged from her wand, coursing around her, solidifying until a form was discernable. A- was that-? Malaika chuckled, a tiny sob in her throat, as a beautiful dragonfly flew around her, determined to shield her from the despair and sadness of this world. ”

“Have you ever heard of Dementors back in Brazil?” Rodger wondered, suddenly, as they reached another black, silver-gilded door in the long hallway of the English Department of Magical Law Enforcement. It was an arranged private tour that would hopefully aid Santiago in his future career pursuit by offering a network and further clarity on what the role entailed. Santiago’s mother had pulled some strings with a few connections overseas, and the trip had been a last minute arrangement during the December break, after his sixteenth birthday.

“No, sir.”

“Then I think you’ll find this fascinating," the man nodded knowingly. Leading him into a room with historical records, where the main centerpiece was a basin located in its center, he was given more information about these Dementors, beasts that were stationed at the infamous prison Azkaban. Creatures that did not kill in any ordinary sense. They fed on a person’s happiness and memories. Those exposed too long were left hollow, and those subjected to the so-called kiss did not recover from it. It was all very abstract.

He was led to stand in front of it, looking down with mild confusion at the swirling water. A Pensieve, the man informed him: a rare magical object that was used for rewatching memories, mainly used in evidence gathering and interrogations. “Very useful, if one needs to be there.”

“Inside?” Santi repeated carefully.

“Yes,” Rodger confirmed and then waved his wand in front of his temple, grabbing onto a string of memory that glided through the air, into the water. An image began to take shape in the ripples. Watching the man nod, before diving his face into the surface, Santiago followed his lead, instinctively holding his breath though it didn’t require it.

Reality morphed in front of his eyes, and suddenly he was existing in a place he’d never physically travelled to. It was some sort of auditorium, rows of ministers in suits frowning and muttering among themselves, with a crowd of spectators. On the floor among them, a man in tattered robes was fighting against restraints, tears streaking down his face as he screamed for mercy. Without Rodger spelling it out, Santiago knew what was supposed to happen. They were about to watch an execution.

The temperature dropped before the whole room silenced. A door opened, and Santi drew a ragged breath at the… thing that entered: a floating cloaked figure engulfed the space, as if its mere presence sucked the energy out of everyone in attendance. The man's sobs grew louder, up until the point where the figure moved toward him. Something in his stomach twisted when he watched a disturbing sequence of the monster, or whatever it was, advance on the helpless man, seemingly sucking the little fighting instinct that was left in him. After a few minutes, the body slumped, chest still heaving but a vacant, empty expression on the man's face said everything. Whatever the Dementor had done, the man would never be the same.

Regarding the shell of a man, stripped bare of his soul, Santiago asked, clinically: “Did he deserve it?” refusing to acknowledge the cold shrill that had tremored through his body.

Surprised by the question, as if it was the first time anyone had questioned the morality behind the kiss of death, the man glanced at him with furrowed brows. “He’s a criminal, my boy,” the Englishman said in wry amusement.

“They all deserve it.”

Instantly, the room evaporated into smoke, and in the blink of an eye, he emerged from the water.

Stunned by the absolute punishment being treated as something completely normalized, the tour continued as if nothing had happened. While Santiago was physically present, his mind refused to abandon the footage he’d just witnessed. Where was that man now? Was he still alive, rotting away in a cell like something dead but still breathing? Not quite gone, but reduced to a body of what he had once been, criminal or not.

The trip all in all had been enlightening, so to speak. His goals had not shifted. If anything, the path he was heading down had become more clear, though he was left pondering—imagining what other horrors he’d be forced to face in a future ministry position. What he’d witnessed and learned followed him for the next months to come, becoming almost an obsession. When he wasn’t in class or participating in his extracurricular activities and obligations, Santi was researching this phenomenon he’d encountered in England, inside the cold walls of the Ministry of Magic, hidden from view but treated as a merciless truth.

Dementors.

The grotesque, demon-like appearance wasn't what kept him up at night, practising his spell-casting for the one day he might encounter one in the flesh. It was something more terrifying: being helpless at the hands of a monster whose only goal in its existence was to leave you hollow and lifeless. Santiago had never felt fear in the way he did, as he imagined his life-force being drained out of his body. Not even the thought of leaving his family behind through death itself was as cruel as still existing, but no longer as the person they once knew. The only known defence against them, to at least ward them off long enough to make a clean exit— alive— was a corporeal patronus, only conjured by a particularly strong and happy memory. According to sources, it was a notoriously difficult spell to master. Most would never succeed. In his mind, failure was never an option. Not if he wanted to make it out with his sanity and life-force intact.

Finding a memory that was strong enough would prove to be the difficult part. The Peruvian boy had plenty of good memories. His life was good, and as a consequence few of the memories stood out as the clear happiest memory, since none of the ones he’d used so far—top grades, autonomy and being trusted— had conjured more than a mist of smoke. All of those things were important to him, yet it seemed like he would have to search deeper.

Raising his wand once more, taking a deep breath, he focused hard on another memory. A wild guess at this point. Santiago thought about his first time. Nothing dramatic, of course. They hadn’t even been in love, in hindsight, at least not on his end, but the rush of dopamine that had filled his body when she’d been wrapped in his arm, lips against his, heatedly, lingered in his memory long after it was over. Even now, a year later, the memory made him bite back a smile, heat flushing his cheeks in an uncharacteristically vulnerable expression few would recognize. It hadn’t been about her or what they were doing, but the fact that it had been the first time when he could just stop over-analysing everything by stripping everything and everyone down to the bone, examining motives, meaning and consequences, including himself. It was a moment of wild, emotional freedom where nothing else seemed to matter.

Barely containing a chuckle, Santiago repeated, confidently: “Expecto Patronum.”

This time, it felt complete, and when the large spotted jaguar pounced from the tip of his wand, everything made sense. It was not the jaguar's strength that resembled him the most, but the fact that it thrived in places others feared: dense jungle, dark water, unseen depths. It crossed boundaries that many creatures avoided altogether. Perhaps that was why the Patronus had taken the form of a Jaguar. Not because Santiago was fearless, but because he had always possessed a need to understand what lurked beneath the surface, regardless of whether he liked what he found.

The happiest memory of her life wasn’t necessarily something that in the moment had given her the most dazzling sensation back then. But looking back, it was so, incredibly clear how important and beautiful that memory had been, and how happy it made her as she continued to look back on it in fondness.

Following a rather explosive potion incident, Malaika Omenuko and Akinyi Odera had some rather… passionate exchanges. What began as hostile remarks evolved into playful banter between the two, whilst Akinyi continued her apprenticeship and Malaika gave her hours to her parents Greenhouse. The two came closer due to their close ages and had much fun. The catalyst to their relationship was a simple, silly bet. But upon losing that bet, never did Akinyi think that would lead to a first date with the love of her life. Malaika asked her on a date, upon winning. Akinyi, of course, accepted.

The night before the date, the girl’s stomach was in knots. It wasn’t supposed to be like this—she wasn’t supposed to be the one that was nervous. She wasn’t the calm, collected, confident one. She had been for years. Yet how come even thinking about Malaika’s promising smile and gleaming eyes made Akinyi want to peer at the sky and ask if they were more than friends? As if this request of a date hadn’t confirmed that. But what if it was a joke? What if Malaika meant it in a platonic, strictly friendly manner? While possible, it didn’t line up. Not only did Malaika clearly like her, Akinyi liked her back. And that scared the tall Uagadou graduate.

They went out for dinner—the food was fabulous, as one would have expected from a well-liked restaurant in the area. But the conversation was better. Her nerves had been washed away as quickly as the seconds had ticked by. It had been no joke, no platonic date. They were there because there was a romantic connection that neither could ignore. Akinyi smiled and laughed, getting lost both in the moment and in her date’s eyes. After they paid the check, the two wandered the town for a good long while. Up and down the sidewalk, in and out of side streets, and weaving between buildings, until they encountered a swath of green, a meadow. The two sat, hands entwined, and gazed at the stars.

Perhaps their first date wasn’t the day that Akinyi had truly felt the happiest she ever had. That was probably reserved for their proposal, or eventually, in the future, their wedding. But that first date had been the beginning. It had been the beginning of loving Malaika, the love of her life. It had been the true beginning of her life. And there was nothing happier than that.

That sentiment rang true as Akinyi raised her wand to cast. “Expecto Patronum.” The words left her lips and a flash of light escaped from her wand, taking the form of a Common Genet.

The Genet was an animal that Akinyi had never gotten tired of seeing. As a child, they would often be seen as the sun set in Kisii, her hometown. They would adapt to life around humans, still constantly skittering away, but eating the food scraps tossed to them and surviving as best as they could. They preferred dense vegetation, such as bushes and thickets, which is where they were more often spotted. Akinyi always viewed them as impressive creatures. They were so elegant, resourceful, and somewhat acrobatic in nature. These were traits that Akinyi tended to try her best to emulate, of course in a different fashion. She carried herself with elegance and confidence, and tried her best to adjust to every situation as best she could. Perhaps these slight similarities between the two was the reason for the Common Genet being the manifestation of Akinyi’s patronus.

Knowledge is the basis of everything. Without knowledge on how things work, or what the reasons are behind certain rules you cannot truly understand the world around you.

This is the principle that Mylo lived by, the reason why they spent countless hours researching the theories behind what they've learnt in class. If they could understand why something is the way it is they can then apply it to other regions, broadening their own understanding of the world they occupied. Allowing him to not just see the world around him, but to understand it and truly appreciate everything they can and can't do.

This had lead to many hours of experimentation and research into theories and spells they hadn't learnt about in class yet, their curiosity knowing no bounds and leading them to more often than not find themselves in a section of the library that contained books far above their current level of education.

Not everything they wanted to learn more about came from lessons or books however, one such curiosity was fuelled by watching their good friend Rose create a white horse out of thin air. It was absolutely fascinating to watch, even after having spent 3 years at a school where magic was the norm.

Afterwards they had approached her and asked her to explain exactly what they had seen and how it worked, eager to explore a new spell they hadn't seen before. Her lesson fascinating them, their afternoon now consisting of figuring out the wandmovement, the pronunciation of the incantation and what exactly the spell did and how it worked.

At the end of their impromptu study session Mylo had managed to conjure up a white mist that left the tip of his wand with a bit less grace than they had hoped it to. Not that it was a surprise, they had only been practising the spell for a short while after all, they really didn't have the same amount of practise with it that their mentor had had. It was still a little disappointing, but at least it gave them a direction. They now knew what they could go and research, which sections of the library they would need to beeline towards and they had compiled a list of questions that they were eager to get answers for.

Unlike the mist the disappointment after each cast didn't seem to disperse and fade away, instead it only seemed to grow denser, attempting to obscure Mylo's vision for anything else that tried to pry their attention away from the evasive spell that had caught their full attention. They practically memorised every book on the subject, tore through research at the speed of light and even turned to more folklore type sources in an attempt to gather a deeper understanding of the spell, hoping that they would find the one thing that would break through the block they had found themselves in.

They wouldn't find the answers they were looking for in any books though, like many people say; answers will come when you are least expecting them.

Just after summer break Mylo would find themselves alone in their dorm, once again back between the familiar walls they had started to call a second home. This time however something felt off, they had spent a great deal of time with their family whom he hadn't seen for a while. The space that they had occupied for the summer holidays now feeling like a crack in the foundation of their being, one that would usually be filled up with the presence of their friends. However one of those friends had left, she had graduated and Mylo had lost his mentor figure, someone they had looked up to for 3 years, someone who's space Mylo didn't know how to fill.

Thinking of what they had were missing also meant thinking about what they'd gain, next year their little sister Andrea would be joining him at school - having had her first instance of magic last christmas - and they knew she'd want to know everything they had learnt and more. She was just like Mylo in that respect, always hungry for more knowledge. Whereas Mylo was more reserved in nature however Andrea was a ball of energy, the two energies complementing each other perfectly and creating a sense of harmony.

They really did miss them all.

Thinking of all of the people who he cared about and who couldn't be around them for their own reasons Mylo took out their wand again, sitting up against the headboard of their bed and they would let the emotions wash over them. Not doing anything with them but just letting them be, allowing them to exist and be noticed without a need to categorise and file them away.

In the silence they decided to try and once again cast the spell that had been alluding them for ages. Pointing their wand in front of them and stating the perfected incantation "Expecto Patronum". The now familiar white mist once again leaving their wand, however this time it wasn't a formless entity. It had a shape, a familiar one at that.

As before them stood a small fox, one that Mylo instantly recognised as a red fox, even though it was the silver colour all patroni had.

He had often wondered what his patroni might be, having read that it represented the casters innermost character, and now seeing the creature in front of them he instantly knew that it was perfect. They knew quite a bit about foxes from their parents who would take Andrea and him to go and see wildlife in the rural areas of the UK and would teach them all about the things they'd see.

According to them foxes could be associated with wisdom, curiosity and creativity. Words Mylo knew others had used to describe them - although they didn't always agree with them - citing the many times Mylo would take the lead on a project, helping others to navigate the uncertain terrain of life where he knew the steps to take. The unending hunger for knowledge they possessed and the boundless creativity that seemed to reside in their bones.

The fox had already vanished, the spell having worn off and even though the physical manifestation of their being had disappeared leaving them once again alone in the room, they didn't feel alone any more. A wave of calm and relief washing over him, quieting their previously restless mind.

Patronus you are applying for: White Ringneck Dove, also called the Barbary dove, (Streptopelia risoria).
Describe why this fits your character: As patonuses often reflect a person's deepest qualities and values, a white dove perfectly fits with Simon to the core. Doves have long been admired for being a symbol of peace, hope, and a messenger of deep love.

500 words (up to a maximum of 2K words) of your character learning the Patronus spell/casting their first corporeal Patronus, please include a word count. This can be completed in-character first or second person or from a third-person perspective. Your application cannot be out of character (OOC).
RP:

A patronus was something that could have been helpful to him in the summer before but that period of time was behind him so it was neither here nor there on whether or not it would have been beneficial or at least something he should have known then. What was important was that he learned how to cast a patronus now for whatever situation may lay ahead that he needed to protect himself, but more importantly, others. Simon Kincaid was always one to use defensive measures, to try and keep the peace, to calm the chaos, but if any of his loved ones were ever in dangerous peril he knew he wanted to do all he could do protect them.

After finding out about patronuses in the wizarding world, Simon didn't know why he hadn't learned how to conjure one sooner. Oh well, better late that never, he figured. Once the idea came into his mind, it didn't seem to want to leave him and he'd find himself wandering into an empty classroom after his internship with the Hospital Wing, draw out his wand, and try.

There were so many great memories in his lifetime that he could think of - moments with his Aunt Maggie, with his baby cousin Maeve, with his muggle friends and being at church back in London. There was laughter amongst friends and times he really helped others but he knew absolutely without any doubt at all that his patronus would be cast correctly and most efficiently if he thought of moments with his beloved, AngelFyre McCubbin. He always was brightest when his thoughts were of her (and they rarely ever weren't).

Knowing that wandcasting wasn't always his strongest - it was evident when he got an E on the OWLs last year in Charms but Os in all his other subjects required to be a healer, he had read up on everything he could in the school library so that he would be ready for this moment. He knew what to do, how to say it, and which wand movement to perform.

Simon stood there in the empty classroom and looked around, He closed his eyes. Expecto Patronum, he could do this.

Simon let the room around him disappear, at least from his thoughts, and he took himself mentally to the Rehearsal Room of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Sure, he could have just tried this there but he wanted to challenge himself to know he could perform it anywhere away from the space. With concentration, there before him was the elegant old piano. It was there, upon the bench, that his second meeting with AngelFyre McCubbin happened. Neither of them quite knew what to make of the other yet but somehow they had found themselves there, next to one another, laughing as they keyed out Heart and Soul on the piano, filling the space with such a brilliant energy.

And then the moment that he often returned to in his thoughts, when his hand had crossed over hers on the keyboard and his fingers brushed gently against hers. It was such a small moment and yet the warmth of that fleeting moment lingered longer than any moment he could remember and still did until this date. It was as if his heart knew that he had found his soulmate long before his mind would ever realize.

Simon let that memory settle over him, filling him with the love and anticipation and warmth as he lifted his wand. "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" he called out clearly within the open space.

He felt his wand producing and opened his eyes as a silver mist began to surge forward, strong and didn't fade.It gathered brighter and brighter until it burst from its wand. The silvery light creature circled the room gracefully - a dove.

It's feathers glowed pearlescent white and each movement seemed to catch light as if glittering though moonlight or the stars. It had calm gently eyes that seemed to regard him as it moved past and Simon laughed. A dove.

Could it really have been anything else? He was surprised and yet not surprised at all. Sometimes he thought it might be a bear or something with great strength but he knew this was the patronus for him as he watched it.

His life had always been about helping others to feel comfort, at ease, to help. He was the one that tried to find the best in people and tried to find the peace in chaos.

A dove was a symbol of hope, of healing, of faith. Simon couldn't have imagined a better guardian.

patronus you are applying for: Wampus Cat
describe why this fits your character:

Wampus cats are animals with eyes, capable of hypnosis and legilimency. As an heiress, Eugenia has been taught to captivate an audience and to extract someone’s secrets with a lot of effort and perhaps some blackmailing. Next, Eugenia comes from a long line of female Legilimens and intends to learn that art when she comes of age, already studying various times without necessarily understanding anything. While not necessarily strong, Eugenia too knows how to evade threats with speed and agility, being especially fast on a broom. [EM] While a Wampus’ tears are thought to be corrosive and cause memory problems, Eugenia’s rage and sorrow is also explosive. You can’t escape from it and she will try to tear you down, despite the usual calm to her anger.
During the past two years, her life has been hectic and dangerous, resulting in her having to live through several near-death situations, but coming out alive each time. It seemed she shares the reputation of being difficult, almost impossible to kill with the Wampus Cat. Lastly, in Folklore, the Wampus Cat is said to only give its hair and act tamely towards the Native American populations, mirroring Eugenia’s tendency to keep most of the true things about her private and only sharing them to those she calls her own, while being secretive and often cold to those she has just met.

Clarification: I’m applying for a Patronus at such a young age for my character, implying it won’t change in the future. It won’t. It is said that Isolts Sayre watched Wampus Kittens play, meaning that in their youth, Wampus Cats are not considered scary beasts or anything possibly dangerous. As Eugenia enters adolescence, she leaves behind her previous child-like innocence, hardening and becoming colder, more calculating. In anger, or if it comes down to protecting those she cares for, she will become an absolute monster, while younger her would be conflict averse. It shows that she has transformed, and become older, wiser, and more powerful as a witch. Her temperament will not change easily now onwards.

500 words (up to a maximum of 2K words) of your character learning the Patronus spell/casting their first corporeal Patronus, please include a word count. this can be completed in-character first or second person or from a third-person perspective. your application cannot be out of character (OOC). Reducio
I am not afraid of death, for I have seen it with my very eyes and escaped its scythe. I saw through their plan and I escaped. I’ll dissect you and see through you very being if it means I can keep my own secrets, for I’m not entrusting you with something you can’t carry. You hate me, yet I live. I was once harmless, but now, I’ll be a monster if you try to touch us again.

A younger Eugenia would have told you that Love could defeat every monster and save even the worst of lost causes. Now, she knew. Love couldn’t stop death. But if wielded correctly, Magic did.

She had run in her lifetime more than she should ever have. It’s not like she was a muggle living in a shady part of town. It wasn’t like she was part of a gang, a bastard of a girl wreaking havoc. No. She was kind, bubbly, and a sharp mind. Really, the secret of impurity had hurt her. It seemed to have been a catalyst for horrible events. The girl met the reaper for the first time at twelve years of age, running while trying to protect herself and her sister from a threat whose name she didn’t know. It had hurt her in ways she couldn’t describe. Yet it had not quenched her thirst for knowledge. Not that, neither a period of hiding from danger, hell, not even dropping the Karageorgiadi last name and being told to act like a purist changed anything. She was stronger than that. And truly pure families had access to knowledge without bounds.

So, between the rigorous studying for classes, she studied spells intended for children of higher years. She, at fourteen years of age, studied spells way beyond her year level, with variable levels of success. Because if those spells could protect her and her sister, then they could be her anchor. Because in hiding her impure lineage, her tainted, wizardborn blood, Eugenia had learnt that no one would stop at anything to hunt them again, if they wanted. If that pristine reputation fell. And even though superficially she tried to have everything under control, she knew she couldn’t. There were many factors beyond her control, a fact deeply lodged in her mind. So, she would learn anything that might protect her if things got awry.

It made sense. To protect herself and her sister, she had to learn more. The young charmer, not having yet been exposed to the brutality of it all, was someone the heiress wanted desperately to protect. Ifigenia was more than capable, Eugenia knew. The ten year old would soon be as formidable as her. But Ifigenia was one of the few Eugenia would give her life for. She couldn’t bear to see the little girl cry. She couldn’t think of the possibility of her hurt. She was the only one she could trust, confide in and be completely truthful around. In a life of secrecy and pretence, she missed being genuine. She missed being emotionally vulnerable. And so, she would protect the one person she could be like that around. Eugenia would wear a stone cold mask and learn the best of defence if it meant protecting a person. Her baby sister.

When she opened a sixth year defence against the dark art book, she saw for the first time a dissection of the topic of dementors. A non being that preyed on human souls, human sorrow. It would come near your mouth and give you a “kiss”. A kiss unlike the “kiss of life”, for it was a kiss of death. The creature sucked out your soul, in a torturously slow manner, leaving you a true shell of who you had been. A soulless body. A fate worse than death.

She didn’t want to suffer that.

The only thing that could save you was the Patronus Charm. A spell so difficult, even adults and seasoned men couldn’t master. Eugenia saw it as a salvage. She would master it. And now that she had set her mind on it, there was nothing that could stop her.

The Greek usually hated to let her memories run loose. They invaded her mind and created a storm of thoughts she tried to not experience. Stuck in that trance, it was much more difficult to snap out of it. Yet for this task, she would let herself swim freely in memories her hyperthymnesiac mind spewed out at her. So, she tried to recall inherently happy memories.

First, she thought of the birth of her sister. Tried to envelop herself in that selfless happiness and wish to care her four year old self had once felt.
Eugenia looked up with wide eyes at her mother. A white bundle at the foot of the bed. The four year old ran to hug her mother, and gazed lovingly at the little bundle. It was so cute, otherworldly and genuinely marvellous. “Mama, are you alright? Daddy didn’t let me see you. Is that my little sister? I heard Daddy say it to Grandma and Grandpa” The woman smiled. She seemed content and placed a kiss to the little girl’s cheek. My little Eugenia, this is your baby sister indeed. Say hello to her. You’ll protect her, right? The four year old heiress, face bathed in the Greek sun, smiled, her jaw setting in conviction. Of course, Mama!
Eugenia snapped out of the memory and tried to cast. “Expecto Patronum!” But out of her wand came only silver mist. The Greek smiled. If on her first attempt she summoned mist, it would mean that a little more searching and focusing would do the deed. She would try every single day after that to cast the spell correctly; the Corporeal Patronus was a salvation from the twisted reality of danger. She wanted to master it.

Each time she tried, the memories blurred in her mind. Her birthdays, when she was younger, reliving her excitement and glee. Opening gifts and hanging family, and playing with friends she was much too busy to talk to today. Rather, than the first memory, there was barely any mist. In search for a stronger memory, she thought back to the day she attended her first pureblood ball. The satisfaction that came with accomplishing her duty perfectly, the praise she received from familial and other faces, the pride in her parents’ eyes. She focused on the moment she felt like she was a worthy heiress, yet Eugenia had barely managed to conjure mist again.

On the last day of school, thoroughly depleted, she tried for a memory again. Her Hogwarts Acceptance letter. The morning she instinctively woke up early.

A letter was dropped from the talons of an owl and Eugenia gracefully picked it up. The green ink writing “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry” excited her to a great degree, another yelp of glee almost escaped her. Instead, she whispered. “It came. It actually came. I’m going to Hogwarts!” She smiled wide, and caught herself doing a little dance. How glad, the girl was, that she had stumbled upon the letter alone! The plan would go forward. They’d be both at Hogwarts!

She stopped the memory hastily, trying to swim out of the hard current of recollection before the memory turned sour. She didn’t want to see her worry at leaving her sister. The glee was enough. Eugenia gripped her wand again and murmured. “Expecto Patronum!” Her spirits were lifted when something silver left her wand, but alas, it was nothing Corporeal. Just mist again. Eugenia cried herself to sleep that night.

When at home, in the marvellous Greek estate of the Smyrnidi, she refused to pick up the charm again. She had tried all memories she considered happy. Heck, she had even tried the feeling she felt when she first saw her sister at the start of their hiding period, or the feeling of returning to school in that viaduct boat, the bittersweet sensation washing over her, yet those had only managed some slightly thicker mist. She didn’t cast a single time since returning from school.

Her sister caught her studying though. “Hey. What’s bothering you? I’ve never seen you open this book before. It’s what..?” The ten year old looked at the cover when Eugenia silently lifted it. “For the love of God! A Sixth year book? Why do you even have it? I never thought your thirst for knowledge went that far… is it my fault? To protect me? I’ll learn, please, don’t burden yourself. It’s not right. I love you, but please, don’t push yourself to the extreme.” The heiress, looking at the little charmer with curious eyes, replied softly. “Its kind of an infatuation off mine by now. I’ll manage. It’s not for you I promise. I just want to learn the Patronus. Have faith in me, I won’t burn myself out.” She chuckled, and closed the book. It shan’t bother her now.

However, it did. Unexpectedly so. The first night she returned at school, the young heiress sat at the bottom of her new dorm bed. Her brilliance in memory often brought a torrent of recollection, and she couldn’t stop it since the feast. She was immersed again in the memory of that crooked night. New Year’s of the year before.
It was parting time.

Perhaps the last time she would ever see her sister.

She wrapped little Ifigenia in a tight hug and a kiss on the head. “Remember what you need to say once you arrive. And please, stay safe.” Her sister replied. “I promise Eugenia. We will live again.” She looked up and took another deep breath, stifling a torrent of words and tears threatening to leave her. The pain, both physical and psychological was immense. But she had to let her go. If they were at the same house, chances were they were not safe at all. She had to.[…]

A throbbing sensation in her thigh brought her back to her senses. To reality. She poured a little amount of powder in her hands and walked towards the ember flames. She checked her watch. 00:14. Just on time. The schedule was working. It was about time to go to the Schnell Manor. This was the last step. Eugenia left the ember flames spring around her and she declared her destination. (English) “Schnell Estate, Kazan Russia!” She’d never ever forget that odd, whirling feeling that soon enveloped her.

Coughing slightly, Eugenia walked out of another, unfamiliar fireplace. She let her satchel down and bent to her feet, still clutching her wand. It felt warm in her hands, a warmth that had nothing to do with fire. Looking around the room, she recognised no thing at all. An eerie quiet rang in the air. Her entire body hurt and she was shaking. Not from the cold. But from the shock. The young Greek sunk on the floor before looking back up. She could only make the outline of a dark figure in the distance. The realisation hit her like cold water. She was in the estate. She had made it. The pain in her right side reminded her she was very much alive and awake. This was not a dream.
That excitement of having lived. The furious glee of an adrenaline soaked body having escaped danger. It was awesome. Maybe it didn’t have to be stereotypically happy. Maybe it was all about that erratic happiness off having lived, escaped that danger. Maybe now, she had found the way. A mad giggle threatening to spill out of her, with hot tears also threatening to stream out her eyes, she focused on that mad relief of having lived. The feeling of winning against the odds.

“Expecto Patronum!” Yet this time, it was different. The sheer power of the spell surprised her, as a silver Wampus Cat came out of her wand. She stared, in awe, the tears falling in earnest. A representation of who she was, what her happiness manifested as. Her worldview had changed that day.

The animal came near her and she took a step forward as it seemed to bow its head. “I loved and I lived. I see you now. You’re mine. Not usual. But maybe that was for the best. I know why.” She smiled, a fragile smile of recognition. And Eugenia let her Patronus go.
