It's been on my mind ever since I joined: Do you think it's wrong or a sin to dive into topics like Harry Potter or magic in general? My mother always says that God doesn't want it because it's often connected to bad things like the devil or demons and such things. What do you think?
First, this is a great question! It's one a lot of people have thought about and answered, and as you're probably aware, those answers range from "heck yes!" to "no, not especially".
Second, especially if you're not yet grown up, be sure you respect what your mother determines is best for you. She loves you and wants the best for you, and sometimes that's not always what we ourselves want! We do have to trust our parents' wisdom.
I know that many denominations and pastors will have their own perspectives, which I'd be interested in learning about here!
My own take is that the whole Wizarding World concept is fantasy. And people do need fantasy from time to time. Whether as an expression of creativity or as a pleasurable escape. As with all fantasy, there is a risk that we might get too caught up in it. It might take too much of our time, energy, and possibly affect our real life activities. And we do know from history that some people have indeed gotten into darker things through fantasy. We should always strive to turn away from the darker side.
One thing I've always appreciated about the Wizarding World, and about Hio in particular, is that it really doesn't go in that direction. The focus is more on magic as a kind of natural force, and therefore something more akin to nuclear forces, gravity, electro-magnetism, etc. Some of us have expressed similar concerns about the nature of HP, and I always suggest to them that if they don't feel comfortable in a place like this, then there is no fault in leaving once you see what it's about! But if they know themselves and are secure enough in their faith and feel comfortable with the adventure and relationships that we focus on here, then I see no serious obstacle to being here.
All that said: if we start taking this too seriously or this becomes too invasive of a hobby, then yes, this could be leaning towards the territory of sin. Not because of the subject matter, but because of how we interact with it and how much we over-indulge in the place! Basically, keep a good balance and focus on the positive aspects. That's how I see it anyway! I'd like to know what you think Charlotte!
Keep your mind in hell; and don't despair.

I just wanted to add here that I've felt exactly the same as you, (Colin and I have had many an owl about it (which he still owes me)) and as such I likely have a similar point to what he said, but basically the reason that I am still on HIO is because in Harry Potter, magic isn't connected to the things that it may be irl. Magic here is natural, like wind or air.

Thanks, that helped a lot. I think that you're right, Colin. I'm really having fun here and I think as long as it doesn't distract me from god it's okay. Thanks for all your replies!

Heeeeey, I want to join too.
I'm a christian in real life and....I had some problems and sometimes I just forgets about Him, and I know that I do not have to do it cause He loves me, but in the same time, it's difficult for me to remember Him with everything I'm having around. I'm member of my church since I was a baby, my parents are devoted christians and I was too, but now I....I don't know what I need to do, I want to believe but is hard for me....
Anyway, I'd love to join in the club

If you would like, I can owl you (or dm. Whichever you're more comfortable with) and work you through this. I understand how hard it can be for what happened to you for it to be hard to accept that God allowed that to happen, and I can talk through what I've learned about life and (even though I don't know the full story) why it could have possibly happened to you.Thomas Whiteside wrote: 31 Jul 2026, 19:31 hey, uh, i'd be interested in joining. i currently don't identify as a christian but i am trying to accept Jesus into my life. i won't go into specifics but i am a survivor of abuse and i am having a hard time grappling with the fact that God couldn't stop that. i'd love for someone to pray for me to help accept christ into my life.

P.S. Haven't forgotten about the question sent. Will be drafting up a response (my personal opinion on it) soon!

Thomas, you came to the right place and I will definitely be praying for you, as I know others here will as well.Thomas Whiteside wrote: 31 Jul 2026, 19:31 hey, uh, i'd be interested in joining. i currently don't identify as a christian but i am trying to accept Jesus into my life. i won't go into specifics but i am a survivor of abuse and i am having a hard time grappling with the fact that God couldn't stop that. i'd love for someone to pray for me to help accept christ into my life.
What I am going to say in response to what you grapple with, the idea that God "couldn't" stop the abuse, is to say that He actually "could" stop it, but He allowed it to happen anyway. That is just a hard truth about Christianity and life as a human being on this planet. It is hard, for everyone, and being a Christian or Muslim or Jew makes the human condition no easier by offering a get out of painful situations free card by virtue of simply being a Christian.
The fact that He allowed your abuse does not mean He doesn't love you, because He does. He truly does. He loves us all so much that He gives us the choice to believe in Him and follow Him, without forcing us to do so. Because we all have free will, we naturally live in a fallen world, and bad things happen. But the ability to choose is important. Faith is a daily act of will to believe that even in the worst of times and circumstances, God is with you and holding you in His hands. That act of will to believe and to have faith doesn't prevent all bad and hurtful things that may come your way, but it does comfort and help to soothe the soul when they do.
I could say so much more but I don't wish to overwhelm you. If you ever need someone to speak to, my owls are always open. And if you have any questions, this is a fantastic place to reach out to for guidance.
I am thankful that you found this place and reached out. That was not by accident, I assure you.
