He is the middle child in his family, with there being a notable age difference between himself and his older brother and younger sister (who are 20 and 2, respectively). As a result, at home, he often finds himself ignored in favour of his siblings. When he is not in environments where his siblings monopolise the attention, Cassiel is especially eager to prove himself. Because of his haughty demeanour, these efforts make him appear like a braggart more than anything else. While he projects self-assurance, Cassiel is deeply insecure, and that insecurity manifests as overachieving tendencies. Since he is so often overlooked at home, school gives him an opportunity to prove his worth. *

This principle has been preached as gospel in every Ahlstrom household since the family first gained their name. It is a truth they impart to all their children, ensuring that this dogma lives on in the next generation. Like many before them, Alastair and Alara Ahlstrom's union was not one of love, but of tradition. Of preservation. Alara's fair appearance and mild temperament were merely fringe benefits; it was the pure magical blood her family, the Fenwynns, boasted for generations that inspired the Ahlstroms to suggest the marriage in the first place. Additionally, both families had many ties to the Ministry, and the match was a logical one. Though they were schoolmates at Hogwarts, the two hardly spoke, with Alastair being two years older and in Slytherin, while Alara was in Ravenclaw. The two barely knew each other when they wed soon after Alara graduated. A year after that, their first child, Aurelius was born, much to the delight of both families. #

Alastair and Alara would reach numerous milestones in the nine years it took them to have another child; their lofty connections in the Ministry meant that Alastair would eventually claim a seat at the Wizengamot while Alara would find work as an Unspeakable. Still, a second heir would elude them for nearly a decade. Years of trying for a second child would finally result in Cassiel a disappointing nine years later. His arrival inspired less fanfare than his brother; he was greeted instead with heavy sighs of relief. Both the Ahlstroms and the Fenwynns had resigned themselves to the bitter prospect that Alastair and Alara would only bring one pureblooded child into the world, and while Cassiel's birth banished these fears to the back of their collective minds, it failed inspire the same enthusiasm that Aurelius's birth did. # .....

Despite being the much sought-after rainfall that broke their childless draught, Cassiel was never (and has never been) shown the same favour his brother was. Aurelius, gifted beyond his years, was the gilded sun whose brilliant shine his parents dared not look away from. Cassiel, in comparison, was little more than a distant star, flickering dimly in a darkened sky. Whatever milestone Cassiel reached, Aurelius had already surpassed years before, and in far more spectacular fashion. Their preference for Aurelius was the catalyst for Cassiel's first instance of magic; after his fourth birthday celebration was interrupted by an announcement from Aurelius, who, at just thirteen years old, reported that he successfully performed Expelliarmus on a friend, Cassiel unintentionally made the bespoke chandelier that hung in their dining room explode, crystal by crystal. After casting a disgruntled Reparo, his parents would click their tongues and comment on how Aurelius had been three when he first displayed his magical abilities. His inability to impress his parents left him plagued with feelings of inadequacy and bitterness, but also a desperation to earn their approval. Try as he might, Cassiel would always fall short, forever being eclipsed by Aurelius and his vast achievements. Expectations for him were high, what with his father having a seat in the Wizengamot, his mother being an Unspeakable, and his family having deep roots in the Ministry. The private tutors who had taught Aurelius were hired to prepare him for Hogwarts, and their frequent and unfavourable comparison to his older brother were demoralising. His fraught situation was only made worse by his extended family's high esteem for his older brother, contrasted with their lukewarm reception towards him. Only one member of the Ahlstrom clan seemed to prefer Cassiel over his brother, and that was his Aunt Rhonwen. #

Unorthodox, Aunt Rhonwen set herself apart from the rest of the family with her eccentricities, her arguably off-putting admiration of the macabre and morbid, and notably, her neutrality (and therefore, her absence of hostility) towards Muggles. Of all their relatives, she treated him with the most kindness and affection, and very easily won him over. The short visits to her home that he was allowed during the summer season were ones he cherished; her place felt more like home than his actual home ever had. # .....

..... A magizoologist with an affinity for Thestrals, it was her enthusiasm and curiosity towards the thrilling and arcane that would be her undoing. While working, a venomous bite from a Runespoor would see her bedridden for days. Despite the efforts from several private healers, Rhonwen could not be saved. In a twist of bitter fate, it was her death that gave Cassiel the ability to see her most beloved creatures. As a result, he has an ambivalent relationship with Thestrals; a sense of admiration for them still lingers within him thanks to his aunt's influence, but his ability to see them is a grim reminder of her death. # .....

Rhonwen died when he was ten, just one year shy of his first year at Hogwarts. Her death condemned Cassiel to a year of loneliness; the birth of his baby sister just a year before meant his parents would be too busy to check in with their often-overlooked second son. It was a feeling he hoped would be vanquished after his enrolment. However, more disappointment was in the cards for him, as the Sorting Hat would end a five-generation streak of Ahlstrom Slytherins by sorting him into Gryffindor. #
