𝔗he van Elst townhouse was filled with more people than Emma had ever seen attend a Christmas party before.
Her father had invited the entirety of his fellow judges on the Wizengamot to attend, and almost everyone accepted, not to mention the families her parents were on good terms with, the ones that they wanted to do business with, and the people they had to invite, because if they didn't, they could be facing inter-pureblood drama. And when some of these people hold a grudge, they never let it go.
All in all, the house was packed.
People were in their little groups, drinking champagne and eating the little snacks the house elves had whipped up. There were servers passing around drinks all throughout the house, and Adelaide, Emma's younger sister, was running about with one of her little friends.
With a sigh, Emma took hold of her little sister's shoulder as the energetic girl flew past.
"Addy, what did I say about running in the house! Mother's going to have a fit if she sees you!"
Adelaide simply blew a raspberry and continued running.
Emma rolled her eyes, but knew better than to chase her. She was little, she didn't know any better.
She continued her rounds around the house, accepting many pats on the head from friends of her parents, and many 'Merry Christmas, dear!' 's.
Eventually, as she was attempting another grab at the crackers and cheese, she felt her mother's hand on her shoulder, accompanied by a "Will you stop that, Emma! You won't fit into your dress by the end of the night!"
Emma turned around in protest, but she didn't get to say anything, as her own parents started pulling her away from the snack table against Emma’s many mouth-full-of-crackers groans and through the parlour over towards the Christmas tree.
"Emma," her mother started, pointing out the family they were heading towards, "these are the Ahlstroms. They graciously accepted our invitation tonight, and we want you to meet Cassiel, their son. You two are the same age, if I'm not mistaken."
