The neat row of manicured shrubs Cassiel loitered behind made for a decent hiding spot. He had exited the congested ballroom a few minutes ago, swapping the tedious prattle of adults discussing the latest happenings within the Ministry for the gentle echo of chirping crickets out in the manor's large courtyard. In direct contrast to the warm lights of the room he'd fled, a waxing moon hung high in the sky, its soft glow bathing the space in a silvery light. It made for a picturesque scene that Cassiel, frankly, didn't have the bandwidth to show a mote of appreciation towards.

Alone in the moonlight with the crickets and their song, he stood with his hands in his dress robe pockets, his posture a dismal slouch his mother would have reprimanded him for if she were there to witness it. The source of his unhappiness lingered inside the ballroom, likely downing another glass of knotgrass mead with little care for things like reputation and public decency.

His Aunt Erythia was quite the character, though her antics were only tolerable in small doses. Though amusing and endearing to some when tipsy, she was undoubtedly a menace when drunk. And she had been very, very inebriated when she toddled up to them.

Cassiel had been standing next to his parents while they chatted with the hosts of the party, the Liligrens. (A moderately wealthy family of good breeding, their matriarch was a colleague of parents at the Ministry.) They regularly held parties for pure-blooded families, so this was not the first gathering the Ahlstroms had been invited to.

It was, however, the first one Aunt Erythia attended. All was well for the first few hours, but once the liquor began flowing, her sense of propriety and shame went down its streaming current, not to be seen again for the rest of the night. She'd stumbled up to them, a wobbly smile on her face, and began speaking in great volumes of her surprise as Cassiel's sorting into Gryffindor.

Cassiel, who was still quite touchy about the subject, hastily excused himself and fled to the courtyard, hopeful that his absence would force Aunt Erythia to gossip garishly about something else. It was while he lingered behind a line of shrubs that he spotted a familiar figure walking around the courtyard.

"Andrea?" he called out. Though he'd sought solace by stepping outside, he didn't mind the presence of someone familiar and so similar in age.

This party is a nightmare.

An over-exaggeration, clearly. Andrea was stuck in a party filled with pure-blooded families, hosted by the Liligrens. Usually, Andrea wouldn't mind. After all, it was better to socialize out there rather than staying home every day. This time, though, it was getting on her nerves. Some womenβ€”who were her mother's friendsβ€”were fussing about how tall she's gotten and how mature she lookedβ€”even going as far as pinching her cheeks, claiming she was still so cute. And oh, it was insufferable, they kept forcing small talk and even Andreaβ€”an eleven-year-oldβ€”could tell how awkward it's gotten.

She looked towards her parents, hoping for a rescue, but they were deeply in a conversation with another family. Despite being inside a ballroom filled classy witches and wizards, Andrea felt a wave of loneliness wash over her.

Andrea sighed and excused herself from the women who were still gushing over her. She drifted over to the dessert section of the long buffet table, grabbing a small pastry and taking little bites as a prop to seem occupied.

She headed towards the courtyard, which looked like an entirely different place. The cool air hit her skin, instantly grounding her as she wandered away from the muffled music. She stopped by a flower bed, looking down at the snowdrops that looked beautiful under the moon's glow. They were so similar to the ones she carefully tended to in her own garden.

"Andrea?"

She turned at the sound of her name, curious to who had wandered outside like she had. Standing near a line of neat shrubs was Cassiel Ahlstrom. He was a familiar figure, though often a whispered-about one. She had seen how he had been sorted into Gryffindor, despite coming from a family with generations of Slytherins. She gave him a small smile, having seen him before at multiple other parties with family.

"Cassiel! Fancy seeing you here."

Andrea's presence was hardly surprising. The Woodburns, like the Ahlstroms and so many other pure-bloods, were fixtures at self-important soirees such as these. Though the Woodburns didn't seem to foster the same ideals surrounding blood purity that his parents did, they did share the same taste in parties. Cassiel could not say the same of himself.

"You say that like we haven't run into each other at one of these horrible events before." They'd seen each other at these sort of gatherings ever since Cassiel's parents decided he was old enough to start attending them. It felt like a badge of honor at first, an achievement to boast smugly about to his younger cousins, but he very soon discovered that what awaited him were long, dull nights spent wearing formal clothes he never felt quite comfortable in. And dancing, an obscene amount of dancing.

Too busy acclimating to life as a student while grappling with the reality of being Gryffindor, Cassiel hadn't yet had the chance to really speak with Andrea at school yet, and their sorting into separate houses certainly didn't help. She was one of the few students he already knew before arriving at Hogwarts, and her calming presence would have been infinitely helpful during his first few tumultuous weeks.

Cassiel stepped away from the shrubs he'd been using a shield, and aproached Andrea with an expression that almost looked amicable. His face, though unmistakeably a child's, possessed the same sharpness all Ahlstroms had, lending even his warmest expressions a hardened edge.

"You needed to escape your family, too?" He thought of his Aunt Erythia, a small scowl on his face. Eying the pastry in her hand, he remarked, "At least you were smart enough to bring a snack."

Andrea stepped closer, "Not exactly, just from a few acquaintances." She gave a dry chuckle, bathing in the refreshingly cool night air after the stifling heat of the ballroom, "My mother's friends, insanely nosy women. If I had stayed a minute longer, I think my ears would've fallen right off."

The dove's eyes squinted in light amusement, noticing the boy's eyes lingering on the sweet treat in her hand. She nudged her hand forward, slightly moving the pastry closer to the young Ahlstrom. "I wasn't that hungry, just needed a small distraction to look busy. You can have it, if you'd like." She lightly shrugged her shoulders and gave him an encouraging look, hoping to get rid of the scowl that had found its way on to his face.

Turning her attention back to the flower bed, her eyes traced the snowdrops' delicate petals that seemed to gleam under the soft moonlight. The courtyard was a gorgeous sight; lush greenery and a quiet wind, a completely contrasting atmosphere to the ballroom's overwhelming chatter.

"So," the girl started, voice soft, "how has Hogwarts been treating you so far?" She kept her gaze on the pale blooms, yet her focus remained on the boy beside her. "I imagine it's a slight change from what we're used to, at least for me it quite is."

Andrea knew the unspoken weight of pure-blood expectations all too well. She knew the invisible scripts their families expected them to follow, the anticipating, and often rude stares of others. She was fully aware of the Ahlstrom lineage and their deep roots in Slytherin. To be pushed into the lion's pride while coming from a snake's den, she could only guess that a small piece of Cassiel's script had ripped during that moment.
