Luca had come to expect one thing, and that was that there was no shortage of social events on the Hogwarts calendar. Midway through November, a needlework event took place in the Small Hall, inviting every student to crochet, knit, or weave something of their own. He paused at the doorway, uncertain whether this kind of craft held any value—until he began analyzing it. On the surface, none of these activities appeared to interest the Slytherin, but his analytical mind began to work. Crochetting and knitting required precise movements that engaged the user's fine motor skills, which would be beneficial to his wandwork and spellcasting abilities for both duelling and Auror work.

As he walked with purpose down the grand staircase towards the small hall, his Prefect badge tapped lightly against his chest, a pointed reminder of the standard he was expected to set for younger students to follow. Luca reminded himself that a Slytherin Prefect was expected to show dignity and involvement. Making his way into the small hall, the young wizard began observing the other students to learn how they behaved, built relationships, or developed patience. His mother and father were constantly imparting words of wisdom related to their own career paths. Today, as he walked among the students succeeding or struggling at their chosen craft, Lorenzo's words played in his mind.

Details matter, Luca. Work that forces you to pay attention to small things makes you sharper everywhere else, the man said to him during one random visit between business trips. There were certainly a lot of small details that you had to pay attention to with each of these patterns. He noticed the stitch tension, the spacing of loops, and how each small error multiplied as the pattern grew. As he reached a table that appeared to be dominated by Slytherin House, he sat where younger Slytherins could easily see him and began to look around. After a moment, he deliberately selected his tools and materials, choosing to challenge himself as he always did

Luca opened the pattern book and found a winter cap, as the cold in the Scottish Highlands recently had been bone-chilling. Reading the first few lines of directions, the cap pattern started easily enough, but then became increasingly complex. He squared his shoulders and leaned over the booklet, jaw tightening slightly as the pattern grew complex. Yet as he formed his first slipknot and chained the opening stitches, he quickly realized how deceptively demanding crochet could be. His determination—and the awareness of younger eyes on him—kept him from giving up.

It was time for the cold weather to come creeping in. Kim didn't mind it though, he much preferred winter. You could always put on more clothes. Summer was sweltering and sometimes he wished he could go around naked or inside a well air-conditioned bubble. Magic could probably help him do this but it might not be allowed on school grounds. Still, maybe he'd try it out since he wasn't always someone who abided by the rules. After all, running a prank club was something of a well kept secret of his, and he smirked at the thought of what they could all do this year together. But for now, Kim had something else on his mind, a new errand had popped up and it was of the creative sort this time....

The kind he liked. But the thing was, it was also something he'd never done before. Despite everything he'd dabbled in in the past, Kim had never done anything relating to yarn. So this would be totally new to him. Coming to the small hall, a little after the errand should have begun, Kim walked into the place to find a great deal of students already there. Well, that was nice. Kind of. At least they weren't blocking the door at any rate. He glanced around the room, searching for familiar faces. If there weren't any open spaces away from others, might as well seek out friends of his if they were there. It would be more comfortable for him than with strangers. Kim's eyes alighted on a very familiar face.

Colin. He glanced down at the materials spread out over the tables and thought for a few seconds. Kim kind of wanted to try and make two scarves. They seemed to be the easiest things to do, albeit time consuming, and also appeared more simple than the others. He selected two spools of dark blue yarn and one spool of white yarn for his first scarf. If he needed more, he'd get more later. He didn't need much white because it was only going to be used as stripes here and there. This one would be for @Bailey Glade. Next, Kim selected two other colors for his second scarf. This one would be for @Valentin Azat Schnell, his beloved. Kim picked up a pair of knitting needles and things he might need.

Kibō hissed on top of his shoulder, the snake having coiled around his upper arm as usual. Kim nodded in response to the hiss that only he could understand. He made his way over to where Colin and Emily were by the fireplace and offered them both a slight smile. "You have room for one more?" Kim asked them, his hands full of yarn, needles and other materials he'd picked up earlier. He saw a beanbag cushion near them that wasn't being used and would probably use that if they let him stay with them. "I can bribe you with a chocolate frog." Kim teased them with a smirk. Well, it wasn't completely a joke. He did have chocolate frogs hidden on his person and they were amazing too.

Who wouldn't want one as a bribe? You just had to worry about it hopping away from you.

The winter chill had finally caught up in Hogwarts, students were sporting knitted sweaters and mittens from home, some happening to get away with sneaking into the kitchens to grab a cup of hot chocolate or some cookies. Tatiana, never having been an early bird, awoke on the morning of November 15th feeling as though a blizzard had swept through her dorm room. Her teeth chattered as she made her way upstairs to the great hall to eat breakfast, where she noticed that some sort of gathering had been opened at the small hall.

Sparked of unusual interest, she decided to go see what was going on after she'd finished her bowl of warm, sweet porridge. When she entered, she noticed that the room was dimly lit, and students were scattered with knitting items as they crocheted, knitted, and weaved different patterns with their friends, or otherwise alone.

Sensing that some sort of event must've been going on, she plucked up the courage to tap a nearby student's shoulder and ask what was going on and why'd they gathered here. “Er, excuse me sir, you seem to know what was going on here,” hopefully he did, “But may I ask, what's going on?”, her words seemed to know what to do but her mind didn't and Tatiana had surprised herself by how easy the question went without any disaster.

The pile of granny squares in her bag was slowly growing, though not by lack of effort, it was just a generally time consuming process. Broom racing was never this boring, though there was more a risk of getting seriously injured in that as opposed to possibly being stabbed with a crochet hook. That was the hope, at least. Graci hadn't had much experience with crocheting, so she could never be too sure. Who knew, maybe crocheting had a high fatality rate. I hope not, that would be exciting, but also very... concerning.

Pulling apart her current square in progress, she glared at the ink stains on her fingers. No matter how many times they faded, they always managed to come back with a vigor. Like the plague. Or an annoying song stuck in ones head. You would think wizards would make normal pens. Or something less messy, at least. She shook her head lightly, restarting on the square.

A thud of a bag and another person was off to her side, the soft slide of fabric against fabric breaking into her restless quiet. Graci looked up at the clearing of the other person's throat, taking in appearances, trying to gauge if she knew her of if everyone in the castle looked similar enough that everyone was familiar. Nope, just another person that I've probably seen in passing. Graci smiled, so as to not seem unreasonably rude, though her dad would say it's weird and other people would think so too. Alas, the young girl was a genuinely smiley person.

Graci perked up a little more at her voice, responding with a light voice greatful for the break in monotony. "I've never knitted before, but my Grandmother taught me how to crochet last weekend. Nothing too impressive though, just some granny squares. Have you crocheted or knitted before? I'm Graci, by the way." She was simply happy someone had talked to her unprompted. Usually she was the one to randomly go up to someone and pretend like they were her next best friend, so it was nice for a little break in routine.

Graci sat up a little striaghter, blowing a stray strand of hair out of her face in annoyance. Embarrassment quickly followed as she sneezed, with an 'excuse me' and faint flush of her face as she picked up a tangle of yarn that had slipped out of her bag and onto the floor. What was it again that Grandma wanted to make out of these repetitive things? I never can remember.... Her mom had taken up crocheting a few years ago, though that had patterned out within a matter of months, leaving the Larens with an obscene amount of itchy scarves and random balls of yarn to make sure their cats didn't completely demolish.

Hm, maybe this is why mum says I have attention span issues, Graci thought as she tried to zone back in, focusing on the kind girl that had sat next to her.

The Small Hall met Angel O'Connor with an infatuated silence so soft and delicate that it almost seemed magical. She was standing in the doorway for a moment, holding a pale blue yarn tightly against her chest as the heat from the fire came to her like a friendly charm.
The light from the candles was moving along the barely lit room, giving the tables the color of gold and making the baskets of yarn shine. The animals made of fabric that were near the beanbags looked like they were greeting her with the innocence of curiosity , too, their button eyes reflecting the light.
Angel let out a long breath. She was not nervous ; she convinced herself, only... cautiously hopeful. The first year at Hogwarts was still like trying to knit with your needles being upside down: possible, but weird, and one she hadn't really figured out yet. But she was here tonight for a reason. The cold of winter was getting inside the castle, and the thought of learning to stitch something warm and homemade seemed like the perfect kind of comforting work for her.
Her boots made a soft noise against the floor as she moved in full and chose a small table next to the candles so that her work wouldn't be hidden by the shadow. The warm light caught the blue and bronze of her scarf as she sat down, putting her yarn away and reaching quite unassumingly for the smooth wooden knitting needles which were laid out for free use.
The book with the pattern she was going to use was open at a simple project-a scarf design with straight lines and gentle curves. "Just right," she said quietly, one finger tracing the image. Something tiny. Something small enough. Something which she could complete and feel good about.
Angel held the book with one hand and started to follow step by step the directions. Her first cast-on attempt was so messy that it could only be described as a tangle of things. She breathed out, undid it, and attempted again. The second was a little less terrible. And the third one-actually, it looked like the book could have given its approval to it.
"Okay," she said to herself and rolled her shoulders.
The hall was quiet though she could hear from afar the rhythm of the clicking needles and the soft voices of the students chatting. It was a nice background, almost as if she was wrapped in a blanket made of sounds. Occasionally, Angel checked the others-some people sharing yarn colors, older students helping younger ones, someone near the fireplace laughing as their yarn ball was going away across the floor-but she always came back to her own little corner and kept on with her work.
Her stitches were not good at the beginning. The tension was incorrect, sometimes too tight, sometimes too loose. But she did not stop and kept going, changed her grip, and allowed the repetitive movement to become natural for her. The fine wool was getting warm under her fingers, the pale blue was slowly but surely becoming a small row of fabric-crooked, imperfect, but undeniably real.
Angel looked down at it , and a feeling of pride took place in her chest and grew quietly.
"This isn't so bad," she said in a low voice, feeling a small thrill of accomplishment.
Her knitting was interrupted only for the time needed to pull her scarf tighter and have another look around the room. The sight of candles. The noise of the fire. The baskets full of yarn of every color her imagination could come up with. The atmosphere was safe, warm, gentle-exactly what she needed on nights when the world seemed too big for a first-year Ravenclaw.
Then she leaned forward, put her shoulders in the right position, and with renewed focus, again, she continued her stitching. Yes, winter would be long and cold, but with each knit and purl done in a steady manner, Angel felt she was bringing a little more warmth into her world-one soft, crooked row at a time.

Lyanna hated the cold.

Not winter itself, necessarily, but the cold had always been her enemy. It was like a game- who would win, Lyanna or the bitter temperatures during November through February? As a result, every year she and her grandmother would knit warm clothes for the winter to come, a a hobby that her grandmother had been doing since she was a child herself, traditions passed along with each generation passing.

But this year, Lyanna was all alone.

Hogwarts had its ups and downs, and one the sunchild had felt since the beginning of her time there was the lack of family and loved ones. During her childhood, she had always been with her mother, father, oftentimes her grandmother and after but a few years her little sister as well. Every problem that they encountered, every bump in the road, they faced it together. That was different now.

Change is not always easy, but we must face it all the same.

But although Lyanna couldn't uphold those traditions with her grandmother sitting beside her in the comfy armchair at her house, that didn't mean she couldn't continue them by herself. For she knew deep inside her that her gran would probably be knitting by the fire all the same, thinking of her. Wasn't she?

Wasn't she??

Yes. She was. The sunchild would hear nothing different, not even from the voice bonking against the inside of her skull 24/7, whispering cruel lies and confusing truths. A new part of her life that she didn't appreciate but had learned to live with, like a siren lurking beneath the waves, Odysseus screaming to be set free but tied against the mast due to his own clever wits.

November 15th, 2025.

Winter was on its way, the late-fall air searing Lyanna's bones if it were not for the warm clothes she had. But even they were not as warm as she wished they were, and there wasn't a knitting club that piqued her interest enough to read through more than just the first catchy word on the flyer. She would have to find the motivation on her own time, plan and switch up her study plan for the coming assignments and would inevitably regret it later.

Unless the organizer wasn't her.

Coincidentally, on the very morning that the thought had come to her, there was a new flyer on the bulletin board in the Hufflepuff Common Room. A get-together to knit and crochet for the winter to come?! Impossible. After rubbing her eyes, Lyanna read the note once more, holding it to the light as to ensure that her eyes weren't merely playing tricks on her. But no, they were not.

The sunchild checked the date once more.

Impossible. The date on her watch read the same as the one on the pamphlet- and if that was correct, she had exactly three minutes to get herself all ready and into the Small Hall, where the event would take place, hosted by none other than @Alyss Gilmour, Slytherin's second year prefect. Lyanna didn't want to be late, and although she could excuse herself for arriving after the beginning of the event given the amount of time she had to get ready, the girl was in a frenzy to be on time.

Teeth, hair, smile.

Lyanna was ready to go have some fun, homework could wait. After all, she needed a break. Up the staircase to the Ground Floor and into the Small Hall she went, and as soon as she entered, nostalgia swept over her like a sudden gust of wind. The sunchild had forgotten the oh so familiar scent of a warm hearth and clean wool, waiting, waiting to be knitted into something beautiful. Or ugly, depending on the person.

In this case, the former.

After taking in her surroundings, Lyanna decided she would go with a scarf first. The colors, she decided, would be white and a pretty shade of purple [ inspo / result ]. It took time, but slowly the design came together, and when her concentration almost cracked, Lyanna Oak finished knitting herself a new scarf. It was well-done, a few sloppy stitches here and there, but overall very neat and compliment-worthy. But the sunchild was not ready to leave just yet.

Time for project number two.

While working on her scarf, an idea came to Lyanna, inspiration for a new design altogether. This one would be more complex and intensive, but she could do it. Better that than homework and studying at least, because returning back to the Common Room meant a History of Magic essay to finish, and as much as the subject interested her, she was decicively not looking forward to that. Before continuing though, the sunchild quickly left the room unnoticed and entered the Great Hall — only a few doors down — to grab herself a snack.

She would need it.

Lyanna didn't need to search around for long before finding a tray for passersby, with a jug or orange juice and a few glasses along with some biscuits left over from breakfast. After only five minutes, there were only two biscuits and ¾ of the juice left. There was nothing more to be accomplished there, and so she made her way back to the Small Hall and began knitting once more, this time a cream-colored sweater with daisies.

Silence reigned over the room.

The only sound to be heard was that of the knitting itself, the occasional swearing when making a wring stitch and the hushed whispers of gossip that apparently couldn't wait. A pressing matter required Lyanna's attention though, and so she turned back to her knitting she had been working on, offering a kind smile to those too stubborn to ask for help but desperately needed it. The design that Lyanna had chosen was more complex than the last, and would require more dedication. The color pattern may not be as difficult, but the flowers would be a pain to do, pretty once finished but difficult in the process of doing so.

The flowers symbolized hope, perseverance and new beginnings. They were worth it. All of those things were the light in the darkness that the sunchild followed during moments of difficulty, the orb inside her that failed to dim to the point of going out. She would stand strong until she crumbled under her own will-power, which would never happen. Lyanna would make sure of that.

Althea did not recall Hogwarts having so many activities in her earlier years at Hogwarts before she had been withdrawn in her fourth year. Upon her return 3 months prior, she had not only attended the Autumn Ball and participated in the chaotic, themed escape room that came along with it, but she had also attended out-of-curriculum events such as the Sign Away activity. Now, on a chilly Saturday afternoon, Althea almost found herself being run over by a gaggle of excited younger students rushing for another weekend event in the castle's Small Hall. Something about crocheting and “I NEED to make a yarn pygmy puff!”, from the echoes of their eager voices as they scurried down the corridors.

Althea glanced down at the crumpled parchment filled with her grievances over her Transfiguration advanced reading for next week weighed down limply by her wand, then at the shrinking, happy shadows of those younger students. Ah, screw it. She doubted that revision could save her much anyway.

Althea kept a respectable distance between her and the group as she trailed behind them, ignoring the embarrassment that she could not remember her way back to the Small Hall despite having been there only weeks prior.

When the Hufflepuff finally arrived, she was surprised to see only a faint glow of light streaming out from the open doors. She approached cautiously, entering and feeling her eyes adjust to the dim lighting. It indeed was a very cozy set-up for a space for needlework. There were lit candles adorning every table to provide a comfortable light for those working at them, with several baskets of assorted needlework tools and materials. From a variety of colourful, soft yarn to polished, shiny hooks, needles, and other tools, there was quite literally everything a person could need to make a handicraft from scratch. Althea felt the tension in her shoulders instinctively fizzle out at the pleasant warmth of the small hall compared to the colder corridors, and she tucked her notes and wand away into her robes as she approached a small table perfect for one. The brunette settled down at the wooden chair at the table and marvelled at the surprising comfort. In the corner of her eyes, she spotted a blonde Slytherin girl weaving through the maze of tables in the space, patiently attending to the queries and concerns of students present.

Reaching for a pair of crocheting hooks that gleaned under the candle light, Althea began inspecting the soft yarn bundled in the basket in front of her. Her mind trailed off to a craft that she had tried to make years ago in her second year, when she had been in a crocheting phase and had accidentally covered her dorm bed with half-completed yarn projects. It was one of her favourites, for when she spent another Friday evening alone up in her dormitory instead of the lively common room – A pretty butterfly craft. Deciding on two balls of yarn, one buttermilk yellow and one lace white, she began to go through the motions that her mind could barely grasp in clarity if not for pure muscle memory.

𝓒ould it be that fate was absolutely real, and did, remarkably, exist? Or was it just a coincidence?

Ruth may have grown rambunctious over the past two winters, and with such boisterous energy bubbling as the seasons morphed colours –from the verdigris of spring and summer, saffron from autumn till it gave way to cerulean– the Hufflepuff’s crimson scarf stood no chance in survival.

Where Ruth’s older sister, Eleanor, had declared the scarf to be officially endurable in any scrap the younger Fairchild might end up in, she had probably severely underestimated the Hufflepuff’s ability to frolick amongst the snow-stained grounds. As time wore on and her morning walks on the ground grew increasingly long (blame it on Sol), the wool began to fray, yarn unravelling as threads snagged onto low branches. It may have once been of pristine quality, but now it was hard to find an edge without an unruly fringe.

The Hufflepuff had been traipsing around with the unmended scarf for quite a while, and the stray strands had begun to get on her nerves. Unfortunately, Ruth never quite found the time to stitch it back to its former state, mainly due to two reasons. One, she doubted her talents with needles. Ever since colliding with Maisie in the corridor almost a year back, Ruth had made it her goal to borrow some books and read up on knitting, stitching, whatnot. Having returned from Summer Camp after visiting Maisie’s booth, she had, too, been able to improve her skills gradually. However, self-doubt and a lack of confidence often eroded her sense of accomplishment.

Second, Sol was taking more of her time than she would usually have opted for. His crepuscular schedule meant Ruth had to retire to bed later and wake up earlier just to check on him, and his ravenous appetite, which came with winter, was beginning to take a toll on her. Sure, she could just let the Great White be, but their interactions had also improved drastically, and Sol was making it well known that he was growing fond and attached to her.

However, it was also he who left Ruth with the resolve to mend the scarf in the end. A sharp nip of his beak, meeting not his intended treat target but the body of red, leaving a hole and a terrifying sight. The following day, on her way across the ground floor back to the Hufflepuff cellar after borrowing a book to guide her through the mending process, a slight peek into the small hall left her speechless.

It made sense that the first thought to pop up was the question of fate or coincidence, didn’t it? She clutched the book to her chest, jaw slacking slightly at the sight, before she decided just to seize the chance. Her scarf and the book were at the ready. All that she needed was a needle, which was being provided.

Ruth noticed that the errand run was not for repairs, but to encourage students to create. Glancing around, she decided to take a seat further away from Alyss Gilmour, by the fireplace, after the quick observation that she might be the one in charge of the event.

As she settled down, Ruth couldn’t help but make a wistful wish for some hot cocoa. Just as seasons came and went, so did her deepest enthusiasm towards hot cocoa. It was a guilty pleasure, an odd craving that occurred during the colder months. She shook her head to herself. Snap out of it. Her common room was situated right next to the kitchens. She could definitely treat herself later. Instead of mulling over her thirst for the drink, she slipped her very-much-dead crimson scarf off her shoulders and placed it snugly down on her lap before flipping through the borrowed book for some instructions. If all went well, Ruth would only have Maisie to thank.

Ophelia couldn't exactly figure out what it was that the girl she'd approached was feeling about being approached. She seemed, not distant, exactly, but like she was far away in an imaginative land that no one could follow her into. Or, in other words, Ophelia felt like she was being given the cold shoulder. Wonderful. No, that wasn't fair. She herself wouldn't have been any more enthusiastic about being approached, no matter how much her mind craved company. She just wasn't the sort of girl who'd open up to people fast, so could she truly blame someone else for being the same?

And-- there!-- wasn't that a smile? The girl, who Ophelia had chosen at randomly, mostly, had put on a smile, and that meant positive things, didn't it? Yes, this interaction was going to succeed, Ophelia was sure of it. The endless cycle of thoughts in her head did not calm her nerves in the least.

She introduced herself as Graci-- was that short for something? Ophelia wondered-- and spoke about her extremely recent exposure to crocheting. Now that the Ravenclaw girl had an extra moment to observe, she saw that the space around Graci corroborated the story she told. There were plenty of those little yarn patterns around her, and Ophelia thought she spied her working on another. What are they called? Right, right. Granny squares.

She looked down at the things that she'd set down for herself, deciding that she'd at least have to begin working to finish. Ophelia opened up the pattern book to the desired page and set to work on following the directions. If nothing else, she could do that. Complete the bookmark design with no embellishments. As she set up to work, she kept the little conversation between Graci and herself.

"Never done anything of the sort, myself." She looked up for a moment. "So, in all honesty, your granny squares are pretty impressive to me." She struggled to figure out how to use a crochet hook, even with the help of the book. It didn't seem to work like a needle, however hard she tried to thread it. It was a little embarrassing, to fail so spectacularly at getting started. "I do sew, though. My mother taught me, and I've made quite a few dresses and things." She didn't want to brag, however much she loved talking about her sewing.

After a few more moments of struggling, Ophelia finally seemed to get the hang of the hook and the yarn. Now, she could begin the arduous process of actually figuring out what the heck she was doing.

The chill of winter hung in the air, and a special yarn crafting gathering was organized to help students stay warm and creative during the colder months. The event welcomed students of all skill levels to explore crocheting, knitting, weaving, and other needlework crafts. With pattern books available for guidance, participants could work on blankets, scarves, hats, sweaters, stuffed animals, or cozy beanbags. The gathering encouraged both creativity and relaxation, offering an opportunity to enjoy the calming process of stitching while producing something useful and comforting.

The gathering took place in the Small Hall, where the lighting was soft and dim. To add warmth and a cozy glow, candles were placed on every table, filling the room with gentle light that reflected off the colorful yarns. Each table featured baskets of yarn in a wide variety of colors, along with hooks, needles, and other essential materials needed to complete the projects. The arrangement invited students to settle in and focus on their crafting in a peaceful environment.

For added comfort, beanbags were arranged near the fireplace, accompanied by a selection of stuffed animals. This cozy corner offered a quiet spot to work while enjoying the warmth of the fire and the soft, inviting seating. Pattern books were available on several tables, open to pages with suggestions and instructions for different projects. These books provided guidance for beginners or inspiration for more experienced crafters who wanted to try something new.

The gathering offered freedom and flexibility in crafting. Participants could choose their own projects, select their favorite colors, and work at their own pace. The focus was on creativity, relaxation, and enjoying the process of making something by hand. Every stitch and row added to the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, leaving students with finished pieces that could bring warmth and comfort throughout the winter months.

Lindsey Bliss, a dedicated Hufflepuff, helped organize the space, making sure the room felt inviting and cozy. Her attention to detail in arranging the candles, yarn, and seating created an atmosphere that encouraged both focus and imagination.

Overall, the winter yarn crafting gathering combined calm, creativity, and cozy charm. The soft candlelight, the variety of yarn, the gentle glow of the fireplace, and the open pattern books created an inviting environment for all attendees. By the end of the gathering, students had the chance to complete handcrafted items that were both practical and comforting, perfectly suited for the frosty months ahead.
