And so it began.
The team had made decisions ahead of time to how they were going to start the match, and Landon easily moved into his position in front of Clark. Part of him hated that he was protecting the guy; Clark was unbearable at times and Landon could still remember when Clark hit one of his friends... and how Clark treated Alyssea, but he was a team player and he wasn't going to just let the team be defeated because he didn't like one of their teammates. Landon was a Hufflepuff after all, and loyal to a fault.
Landon looked around at the board, trying to assess the other team's strategy. It didn't help that Landon didn't play chess often, but this was different than chess. For example, they didn't have any pawns in this game, which changed things quite a bit. But Landon was still determined to try and do his best for the team. He still didn't quite know how he got roped into playing, but it was exciting nonetheless.
Landon watched as everyone went to their positions on the board, gulping a little as he was put right in the line of fire. But that was the job of the Bishop, to protect and guard. Landon was going to do his best. He looked around at his team before returning his focus ahead of himself. He was a little nervous about how this was going to go, but he kept a determined look on his face. Landon was not going to show weakness right now.

Wizard Chess: The Gauntlet
Neither Archer nor his bewildered author had any idea what the hell was going on.
That wasn’t the point. The point was winning at a hand one did not know well.
The had strategised ahead of time, and thank God for that. Instead of fumbling at wizard chess, which, as the game with Livia had proven, was definitely not amongst his niche skills, he moved with certainty. He was glad too that the young Quidditch and tactics prodigy was on his side rather than against it, although with the massive congregation of Slytherin duellists present, the talent was by no means lacking.
Moving to his place, which was not far ahead, Archer tugged at his sweater and fixed his shirt collar. Confidence, after all, was not necessarily in how he acted but his performance at the game. Feeling slightly more in his own body after the start of the game, he offered Prat and Livia a glance. Both the former and the latter were not exactly close to him, but Elisa and Mahl should have been trusty.
After all, he supposed he wasn’t the one meant to be protected, being no king. No, he decided, as the most powerful piece, he had to act.

┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈The game had begun, and Maisie wasn't feeling quite as confident as she was a few moments ago. But then again, she never did experience confidence since stepping onto her checkered square.
She knew her move. They had planned everyone's moves out. So she moved diagonally. She was a knight, and knights are represented with a horse. She might as well have just galloped there, but she didn't. She needed her dignity, and that would have made her a target.
Alright, now she was next to a sceptor-weilding part-goblin king, who didn't seem to mind thrashing his cold weapon around; and diagonal to the queen, who was in the middle of a duel. She supposed she ought to do something, but what? Shoot a few stunning spells? She was pretty sure that wasn't allowed. So for now she was just going to stand between two of the most powerful black pieces doing nothing. That didn't seem right. The rest of her team seemed to be doing well, she saw the two bishops try their best to protect Ara, and Ava dueling a White piece (she had lost track of who's who on the other team). Apart from that, she had no idea what was going on-- everything was just too fast.
Now with nothing much to do, which was something that shouldn't happen, she thought, in a duel, she looked around the board. People were shouting spells and they--the spells--flew in the air. No one would die, would they? She hoped not, but then again, this was Hogwarts. Though not actively being part of the game, she had more time to think where she and her team would go next. Not that she really knew which spot was best.

Ava took a steadying breath before launching into action, leaping across the board into the path of their opponents, whether out of offense or defense to their blasted king, she wasn’t certain.
Despite the game happening around her, she couldn’t help but admire the number of Slytherins the game had turned up. Maybe the snakes were beginning to leave their nests. However unlikely that was.
Her team moved around her, each taking on a new position. She quickly stiffened at the realization of her proximity to Clark, despite that being her main point of concern within the game. She wished she could have exchanged him with a player from the other team, such as the far more agreeable Mahloiz. Or even Astra, despite her younger year, would make the team much better than the half-sized part goblin grumbling (as always).
Her thoughts were interrupted by the younger white player moving to battle her, a decision that would not be kindly taken. Her eyes narrowed at the girl—a hufflepuff, if she recalled. Then slowly grinned. "So that’s what you want to do, huh?"

Moving went as easily as it could have—Livia glanced about her to see each of White's pieces moving promptly into place, and she followed suit, gliding over the board as if leading a dance through a ballroom. She continued to survey the other team with an almost detached stare, emerald green eyes narrowed to pinpricks as she tried to pick apart their strategy. Her brow lowered just slightly when she noticed Malcolm's shield functioning as it was likely meant to. Nonetheless, she remained unperturbed; that was just chess, a give-and-take, defence planned to combat the offence.
Black had taken a different approach and had tucked their King between a group of other pieces. It was true to form, something Livia much appreciated—one could not play Black and not have proper defence. Even better, that the other team were somewhat competent meant her own team would have a challenge. Reaching the short, gaudy boy would prove difficult... however, Livia held a strong position for observing the boy's tactless outfit, which also meant she had an opening.
Most certainly, then, the challenge would not stop Team White. Livia peered behind her to view her team spread out in a V shape, just as they had strategised. She glanced back in front of her see Astra. A small part of her remained only slightly disappointed that she was tied to Astra, but she recognised it was for the best, and whatever provided the most strategic benefit to the team was what she would follow. The only problem was that she also did not want to tie Astra down. The older redhead seemed very capable and could likely have been doing more with her role...
Livia shook herself out of her hesitation and drew her shoulders back in a small stretch. She did her best to maintain her blank stare even as the corners of her lips threatened to pull backwards in a pleased smile. She managed to tamp it down, deciding that a smile would only be necessary should they win.

Aislin knew the very basics of chess. Sitting her down and asking her to come up with a winning strategy was an entire other ordeal she was doubtfully qualified for, but at least she wasn't questioning how a Rook piece could move. Horizontally or vertically, nothing through the board's square corners. Nothing vertically, since even wizard chess didn't include the third dimension for some sad reason--they had brooms, didn't they? There wasn't much for her to do except step sideways several squares at this point, coming up behind their costumed King and the Knight with wavy hair. This close to the King, she remembered to stand up straighter, using every centimeter to appear... intimidating, maybe? She would certainly be visible over the shorter boy's shoulder.
For most of the other pieces, it was much the same, but the Queens were quick to action, powerful energy crackling between the older students. That looked kind of painful, actually. Maybe it was good she was back here, at least until she could scout out what this game was all about, what everyone could do. But Malcolm seemed to have gotten the hang of it quite quickly, summoning a shield to help their Queen with the worst of it, and if he could face that right off the bat, so could she, probably. On determination to match his successes if nothing else. They both knew their Herbology, they'd both wound up as captains, and they would both figure out chess combat.

18 September 2025 (21:28 )Was it interesting so far? Eh. So much for trying to do something other than nothing on her birthday.
Ara was in an alright square on the board though rather far away. But not that far to not hear the sigh from behind her. She scoffed, still looking forward. She didn't care much about most of these people anyway. She wasn’t thrilled to be here -- “game” or not, she wasn’t exactly the type to treat standing around like a statue as sport. But admittedly, watching the formations fold out across the board had its charm. Like watching predators circle each other, waiting for the first slip of blood.
The girl turned her head slightly then nodded. The V formation wasn't exactly subtle. The girl wisp of curly hair near the very end of the other side -- Mahl. A part of her was disappointed that they weren't on the same team. Of course. Shadows seemed to cling to him even now, coiling like smoke. Ara’s eyes narrowed, but just faintly.
Across the way, Archer Duncan gleamed like some sort of sunlit hero, and she felt her jaw tighten. Great. The “glorious” White Queen. They were just a kid to Ara. A kid that kind of sucked at dueling at first to be honest.
Her eyes flicked back, caught the smallest tremor of nervousness in Landon’s stance, his shoulders set square in front of Clark. Poor boy. He didn’t deserve to be anyone’s shield, but loyalty had its price.
Ara exhaled, low and steady, and leaned her staff across both palms. “Alright then,” she murmured, a half-smile ghosting across her face. The first round was still forming, tension coiling like a snake in tall grass. It was only a matter of time before someone struck—and she had no intention of being the first piece to fall. Might be her but who cares?
It was her birthday. The least the universe could do was give her a win.

First move: directly forward. Yeah. The board swarmed with movement, black grouping in and white fanning out. As of yet, Astra had no idea which strategy was better. Each team had similar ideas over the protection of the king. The short fellow on the other side of the board was dwarfed by the talented duellist Ara Villa. Astra glanced back at Livia, who was just a square behind her, and gestured to the sight of the outlandishly dressed gremlin creature glowering behind the statuesque Ara. "Funny looking, innit," she said under her breath, for Livia's ears only.--
The role of a rook was twofold: defend friends and break foes. Livia was the current recipient of Astra's defense. The first year was slight, seemed physically fragile. This game involved the physical. Astra didn't mind looking out for the younger student, but she wondered how two pieces who moved in vastly different ways would be able to stick together. Astra would inevitably come away with bruises, no matter what ended up happening, she just hoped Livia wouldn't be terribly hurt. Especially if they got separated.

When their team's only chatty teammate started going on about post-victory looting plans, Mamori couldn't help but let out a chuckle. Not that he was judging, slightly unethical or not he rather liked the idea. The winning team deserved some spoils of war after all. If nobody else wanted that staff afterward he'd happily take it off their hands; that gemstone perched on top looked like it could be worth a fortune.
The match officially began, and while the white pushed forward with considerably more aggression, the black had arranged themselves like they were parking the magical bus. The defensive setup that black had chosen clearly revealed their king's personality — a coward, a scaredy-cat, and quite frankly, a complete chicken. Seemed his courage matched his height, microscopic at best.
Unfortunately for the black team, Livia had managed to position herself perfectly to target the one gap in their defensive wall. While landing a direct hit on the king seemed unlikely, the pressure alone might be enough to crack their formation. Things were proceeding smoothly until Mamori's eyes met those of the black knight. His opponent — a girl who looked several years his senior — apparently interpreted his move into her direct line of sight as an invitation to duel, given her challenging tone.
"Wouldn't have it any other way," Mamori replied, letting just enough challenge color his voice to seal the deal.xx ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
