Maria was flying smoothly with Hikari, a student before the match she had only done practice with. She was feeling confident about their chances, they had made great progress after all! It was only a matter of time before they caught up with the Beauxbaton flyer! At least, that was what the third year thought. First, Hikari went down, bucked off the broom by the jinx cast by the very same Frenchie they were trying to catch. So caught up in the drama with Hikari, she failed to see her own broom was hit as well! This is the second time someone caught her off guard with spell spread! She was determined, cursing silently to herself, she would not be caught off guard a third time as she tumbled unable to keep her balance.

And then the spells started flying. None came towards him, but both of his remaining female teammates had their brooms buck them off as if they were inexperienced first years handling the things for the first time in their lives.

Huh.

"Hey," Kiyoshi rumbled at Katsuro, the only teammate he sad who was still atop a broom. "You think they're going after the girls first on purpose, to send us some kind of message?"

I remember the mountains and forests of Iida growing up as if they were a part of me. In many ways, maybe they were more my friends than those around me. Growing up, I felt like I was meant to be among those towering peaks, not confined to the small spaces of our village. After all, I knew was that I was different—stronger, taller, and more resilient than everyone around me.

As a child, I was a wild, uncontrollable thing, all instinct and no thought. I would climb trees until the branches snapped under my weight, and I'd dare other kids to sneak into the mountains with me. I loved the fear in their eyes when they looked at me, I think. Mother would scold me often, telling me to be kind and gentle, but it was hard to listen when my blood was pumping and screaming for me to be as fierce as was my due.

I recall one time when I fell from a tree. I must have been around seven. The branch broke, and I landed badly and it hurt terribly to even try and stand. Instead of crying, I felt a burning anger consume me. How dare my body betray me? I dragged myself back home, determined not to show weakness. By the time I arrived, the pain had vanished, and my mother found no injury. It was as if my body had healed itself. She looked at me with a mix of worry and wonder, but she never said a word about it again.

Mother was something else. For all the trouble I gave her, she was patient with me and taught me to control myself, to be respectful and humble. She'd remind me time and time again that strength wasn't just about physical power but about kindness and compassion. It wasn't easy; my instincts often got the better of me many times before I started to understand properly.

People in the village whisper about my father, even now. Some said he was a bandit, others a giant from the mountains, and a few even claimed he was an Oni. My mother never confirmed or denied any of it. She just smiled and told me that I was loved, no matter what.

As I grew older, I began to realize that I wasn't fully human. My size and strength were just the beginning. There was something deeper inside of me that set me apart. My blood and my instincts -- it is difficult to put into words, language is not quite enough to describe it well -- sing to me, I suppose would be the closest thing I can get to. It demands action, and respect, and entertainment, in ways that would shame me to put into words.

But I know now that I am more than my blood. I am strong, and not just a slave to my feelings; I know how to be strong, and how to think. Mother taught me. But even still, sometimes I cannot help but feel like an outsider looking in. The world seems so small, and people so alien in how they think and act. But people are people are people, and should be respected, no matter how much you disagree with them.

Maybe Mahoutokoro will be better, and people there will seem less alien than those from my home? Here's to hoping.

Appearance:
Towering over his peers and even some adults at 5'7", Kiyoshi stands out among the students. Something about him exudes an air of intensity- perhaps his short-cropped, military-style hair; his muscular build; or his deep-set appearance. Or perhaps it was just his face -- even at the tender age of 11 he had had a slightly heavier brow, a more defined jawlone that made him look almost an adult.

He has the typical warm complexion of the Japanese people, though many natives might notice a slightly darker shade to his coloring. Kiyoshi has disproportionately large, calloused hands, which have seen rough use in climbing trees and roughhousing, capable of surprising feats of strength. However, for all their ability, his hands are also incredibly clumsy when handling the myriad of common everyday items that are designed for human proportions.

His clothing is simple and practical and, outside of the school uniform, nothing that would ever catch the eye. Keen observers may notice that he has a preference for loose-fitting clothes that are repurposed adult clothes rather than ones specifically tailored for him. He also often wore simple bracelets made of rope on his wrists; simple and unassuming to many, but a deeply cherished personal gift to Kiyoshi.

Rules are, like so much else in the world, not static.

Sure, they are important. Vital, even. Without some guidelines, how would you know what is good and what isn't, after all? But for someone like Kiyoshi, who often has his blood singing to him of sweet glorious violence in one ear, and the words and teachings of his beloved mother ringing in the other, that doesn't quite work. Traditional rules and guidelines, like much of the everyday things in his life, seem to be ill-fitting to Kiyoshi. The right size but the wrong fit, with the wrong proportions and the wrong texture.

And like so much else in his life, that meant that Kiyoshi needed something just a little bit more....custom to suit his needs.

It wasn't cheating. Not really. Just a 'creative' interpretation of the rules, to allow him more freedom of expression and to be himself. If they were really serious about not wanting him to do the things he wanted to do, then surely the adults would have made it harder to get away with it after all.

Many would say that his expression of freedom was much too violent, the few times that he truly let himself loose from the tight chains of discipline that he held himself beholden to. And to them he would say -- well. Nothing, actually. For he would only have to explain himself if he got caught. And why deal with the whole song and dance of getting into trouble when he could simply choose to... Not.

Not because he cared overly much. He was hardly afraid to stand behind his choices. and would not lose a wink of sleep over taking actions that others believed were outside the rules, foul, or even under-handed.

But being caught meant a lot of paperwork and a lot of whining from people who would be better served at the business end of his fist. And it was hardly worth the grinding it would take on his patience to have him control himself while some self-important, unimaginative weakling told him how he should be living his life.

After all, there are no rules to keep people from cheating in real life, and what rules there were could be bent easily enough from what he had seen. So, why should he live bound by such rules during school where he should be preparing for real life?

Ale thought that giving Maxi a boost to be above the racing track was a good idea. Little did he know that he managed to get this spell out perfectly. He would have been proud if it was a good thing and against their enemies but like that his good intention was turned around.
"I am sorry, Maxi! That was not intended." While saying this, the world went dark suddenly. He had not seen that spell coming and the blindfold surprised him. What now? he thought but did not panick,.. yet.

When facing an obstacle on a broom racing course that is of easy or moderate challenge rating, you have a 10% chance to automatically make it past without having to roll against the obstacle's DCs. If you go through multiple obstacles in one round, your chance to make it past stacks for that round. Example: If you go through an easy obstacle and a moderate obstacle in one round, you have 10% chance to make it past the first obstacle, and a 20% chance to make it past the second obstacle. This stacking chance resets to 10% when the ability is successful and between rounds. This roll is performed before any other rolls that might impact success against an obstacle (eg Evasive Maneuvers). Taking this ability twice will allow this effect to happen with hard and near-impossible challenge rating obstacles too.

As soon as Alemayehu was able to walk, his dad placed him on a small broom to practice. He was not a natural flyer, it took him a few weeks or even months to be able to keep his balance on the little broom but when he got the hang of it, he didn't even want to dismount and was always sad when they arrived and he had to get off his broom. In the first years on his toy broom, he would only fly with a string attached and mostly above the flying carpet they were using for their tents. He would also only fly shorter distances and times. Then he got tired and mounted his parents broom. But as he grew older, he could fly longer and further. When he turned six years old, his father bought a new broom for himself and so Alemayehu got his father's broomstick. It was much faster and they would also do some races for fun at night, when no muggles were there to see them. His mother didn't really appreciate this but his father liked broom sports too much to not show his son.
When he entered Uagadou, he got a new broom: A Silver Arrow. Alemayehu was proud and happy and hoped to get on the school's broom racing team. His flying experience when entering Uagadou was already 10 years, making him a quite experienced and steady flyer. Always living on the move like nomads he had flown across all over the african continent in almost all weather conditions and knowing how to handle various obstacles. They mostly flew over the woods but sometimes it was safer to fly through them. They fly often on open space with winds blowing hard. They often fly at night or in dusk or dawn, often having fog along the way to make it even harder to see and navigate.
Additionally to their normal travel obstacles, his father taught him how to best maneuvre through narrow ways, how to navigate when you really see nothing or when the sun comes from the front and blinds you. He had put Alemayehu through various tests. Once he had flewn with a magically dense cloud of fog around him, only with his compass he could determine where to fly. He had needed to fly very slow because there could always be some obstacle before him. Another time, his father had caused the wind to blow from the front and Alemayehu had to stay on his broom and idealy even move forwards. They had created their own maze where Alemayehu had to fly through as fast as he could. They had a lot of fun but it had been also a lot of work.

Alemayhu had learned healing skills from his mother. Even though she was not allowed to teach him spells just yet, she had made sure that he learned everything else. And so from three years on, she had taken him to collect magical herbs and ingredients needed in healing potions and ointments. They had collected flobberworms and he had helped her to get the mucus, a perfect thickener for ointments. They had collected the leaves of the abyssinian shrivelfig. She also showed her the non-magical healing plants and how to collect them, when to collect them, what to watch out for. He learned which plants were healthy, which were poisonous, which needed to be cut, which to be plucked. He then watched her to brew her potions.
When he turned six years old and already had started to learn how to read, his mother would make him read about all the plants not native to Africa, all the plants she could not show him. he would read about potions, herbology and healing magic.
He was also allowed to collect the plants himself and to help with preparing them for the potions: chopping, grinding, mixing them.
With eight years, she also took him to her patients where he learned what made them sick, mostly muggle diseases but also some magically induced ones. He learned about the ancient techniques of healing as well as the modern ones, even though the last were seldom possible with the means they got where they were.
Alemayehu learned a lot of things from his mother, from the books, and in the end had a vast theoretical knowledge. When he was ten years old, he often could identify the disease and what the people needed as a treatment, even though he lacked practical experience.
Only when arriving at Uagadou he had also gotten pracitcal experience. He learned the spells and with his background in how the human body worked, how plants made healing possible etc. he had learned all the healing spells in a breeze. Other spells had taken much more time to learn but healing seemed to be in his blood or at least in his muscle memory, induced by his mother. He was not sure whether it was genetics or pure hard work but he was happy to also have this ability to heal. It was not necessarily something he wanted to do for a living but he wanted to have his friends feel well and so being able to heal them was great.

Katsuro did not hesitated bringing out his wand and casting a blindfold spell against the guy on the opposite team that was dangerously close to his teammates.

“Maybe” He uttered through the course ahead, replying to Kiyoshi, “Let them see their mistake shall we?” He smirked at his teammate while quickly regaining his focus in the obstacles in front of him.

Year 1: Cat's Grace
Reducio
Born into an old pure-blood family with aristocratic customs, Katsuro was raised and educated to become a graceful, gentle, and polite boy. His parents and relatives had high expectations of him and his siblings, so his upbringing was full of strict demands that he always had to meet in order to obtain his rewards and gratifications. As long as he played by the book, he would have everything he wanted, those were the rules.

He was the second son of Diogo Souto and Mizuna Goto. Osamu Souto was his older brother, a fifteen-year-old boy, and Ryota Souto was the youngest, at seven. With two other brothers, the competition was always evident and manifested itself in his relationships with the family and among the three of them.

At times, for the young Katsuro, his family and siblings were too overwhelming, and he found himself, more than once, wishing he could remain invisible or unnoticed for a while. And over time, this became a skill that actually began to come more naturally to him. He learned how to become more quiet, be more observant and learn how to subtly extract himself from the conversations and how to slowly walk away from the room.

It didn’t take long for him to discover that this newfound ability to remain silent and imperceptible would also come in handy whenever he felt the need to sneak around the house. On several occasions, he would use it to sneak into the kitchen and find delicious treats and snacks right under the chefs’ noses, without being noticed. Sometimes, it was useful to stay hidden while playing hide-and-seek and eventually outsmarting his brothers and cousins. It was fun to watch them search for him until they finally had to give up and deal with all his pretensions. He always made sure to show them his best and smuggest face, of course!

This was a skill that was born out of necessity, but it soon became a very welcome and effective tool. Blending into the background became a way to stay safe and find a place of reprieve, to maintain control. Over time, it became more than just a way to find peace, it became a quiet power. This also helped him to begin to notice things that others didn't, like whispered conversations, being able to listen and observe when others thought to be alone, the subtle looks, the silent messages…

Year 2: Foulplay
Reducio
At the age of 12, Katsuro has already developed a natural ability to be exceptionally good at breaking rules and creating his own on his own terms. His talent for deception and deceit is not just a random event of fate, it didn’t happen by mere chance. It stems from a combination of personality, acquired skills, and the natural need to survive in the environment in which he was forced to grow up.
Katsuro Souto was born in a highly competitive family, his brothers and cousins were always elements of comparison and everyone was expected to have high expectations of doing their best and honoring the family name. Approval and praise from adults often came only with results, no matter the efforts taken to achieve it. Cheating was not seen as a moral failure, but as a tool to stay ahead and win the prize. Over time, he learned that being clever and winning mattered more than how he played the game, because the winner was always the one bringing the victory home not the one that played nicely. From a young age, he watched others stretch the truth or manipulate situations to their advantage, and instead of being taught to value fairness, he was told to admire their success instead.
It was also luck or destiny that endowed the second son of Diogo and Mizuna Souto with a sharp mind and made him an observant learner. These qualities helped him pay close attention to his surroundings, and the people around, allowing him to be able to think one, or several steps ahead. He observed and learned how the rules worked and were enforced, how to better find loopholes in them and adapt to the situations, how to notice when people stopped to pay the necessary attention and take the right opportunities for his benefit.
Another no less important characteristic that helps him pass unnoticed with his mischief and less noble plans, is his charisma and ability to act and pretend innocence. He understands how to deflect suspicion by acting confident, being friendly, and presenting himself as being helpful to others. He is a good and convincing liar and has no problem doing so, especially when it earns him more praise and gives him the opportunity to prove that he is better than his brothers or cousins.
It is extremely rewarding and exciting for young Katsuro to be able to outwit the system and his opponents, always finding the best ways to manipulate things in his favor, being able to shift the blame onto others and using his charm to avoid the bad consequences of his actions. A game doesn't necessarily have to be about winning, but it is definitely about not losing.

The boy once again sighed. His eyes looked at the surroundings, making sure no one hit him with anything when he was about to remount. With a single jump, Javier mounted his broom. Looking to his left and right, no one shared his unit. It was a bit embarrassing to stay at the starting line. "At least, I could make Maxi fly faster," he kept repeating to himself to reduce his shame.

Claire is rich and a Pure-Blooded girl. Rich, Pure-Blood ladies are nearly royal in the wizarding world. And being royal means you are skilled at many things. Claire was often reminded that as a young girl, by her parents. Her family believed all wizards were equal, but they still couldn't help being a little proud of their money and status. "I was skilled at charms when I was young. Mabie you will be too?" her mère sometimes mentioned. "Come on honey, put that tutoring to good use when you get in that school. Make us proud!" her père occasionally said. After hearing that a few times a year, per parent, nine-year-old Claire really wanted to make her parents proud in some skill of magic. She wanted to show that she was a good girl. And she'll admit she was a teensy bit jealous of all the attention the twins were getting. She'll also admit that she didn't really like young babies. Sure, now that her brothers are older she has an inseparable relationship with them, but that wasn't always the case. So, she decided that she would hide in the family library studying ancient books of magic from The Family Of Ducasse. The family was dying out so the books would probably be hers someday. What would she learn? Defense of the Dark Arts? Too scary for a young child. Potions? No way a kid could learn it all from a book! Then, she realized that it was settled. Charms. Claire's mother was really good at it. The books were fairly easy to understand. When she was ready, she would just ask her parents to cast some spells and she would name them. Easy peasy! She sat in the library for most of the day for a couple months soaking in new knowledge and studying old knowledge. She didn't budge for outside time, games, or family chats. Only when her presence was required did she begrudgingly come. It sometimes got hard and boring, but Claire kept at it. She didn't let herself stop. Claire thought that she might have a talent for them just like her mother. Finally it was the big day. "Mère, Père do some charm spells. I can name them. Please?" said the nine-year-old girl. Her parents were amused, so they did, to humor her. They got more and more surprised as Claire named about fifty charms right ( and sometimes a little history behind the spell, or why the light was a certain color, ) after another with no rhyme or reason to what was cast or who cast it. After the last charm was fired her mother was in happy tears and her father was grinning like he had never seen his daughter that way before. Claire still happily carries that wonderful memory and that important knowledge with her today, as she studies to be an official witch .

Immediately, the teams began working well together, with Chiaki being flung by Katsuro and Maximilien making the best of his situation, casting the Leg-Locking Curse upon his teammate. Alyss simply nodded as she observed this occur, eyes catching on Alemayehu as he removed the blindfold from his face. These were all smart, calculated moves, and they all succeeded. “And Chiaki is finding themselves being flung forward by Katsuro, in an attempt to get their upperclassman as far up the track as possible— will it be enough?” Alyss spoke as dramatically as possible, the exhilaration from merely watching it all unfold catching up to her.

“And Mahoutokoro take the offensive, knocking Alemayehu from his broom, just as he removed the blindfold they’d gifted him!” Alyss exclaimed, hiding a wince as the burly second year managed to shoulder the Uagadou student from his broom.

Jason ends here.
Alyss gave a quiet sigh as she observed the snow once again being proven as a simple obstacle to get through. She had been quite excited to observe it upon their track, but unfortunately it didn’t seem to be doing too much.
UNIT 8 - HARD FOG - ACC DC 26

Chiaki 5% auto-fail, procs on 1: [d20 : 17] —> does not proc.

Ale acc: [d20 : 17] + 12 - 3 = 26 —> success

Chiaki ends here.
The fog, on the other hand? Alyss hated fog as it was, but many, many people had struggled with it. Hadn’t Maximilien, the seventh year had a hiccup when it came to the think bundle of… cloud? The air blurred in front of the racers, making it difficult to see and their reaction time slower, if they didn’t properly prepare themselves for it.

“And we have the young racer so close to the end— but those thorns have left their mark. Despite her strength to get past those winds, there are a few more challenges that remain.” Alyss once again reminded any onlookers of the dangers of the track. Although Claire had quite the lead, it could all implode any second, if luck wasn’t in her favor.

There was a shiver of excitement running through Kiyoshi, as someone else agreed with his assessment. These guys were being jerks. Good. It meant that Kiyoshi could really let loose. No more gentleness. He would crush them.

A look around and he saw a short-ish Uagadou racer (@Alemayehu Ngeni Bekele). Perfect.

"OI!" He thundered at the boy; shifting his broom to bring his 6-foot frame to bear. "You're going DOWN!"

He chased the boy through the fog, barely keeping his bearing by focusing on the single point. His prey. And finally he caught up to the shorter boy, ramming him clear off his broom.

A moment to catch his bearing. Damn, that felt good.

At this point, Chiaki's frustration at being so behind could only be channelled into getting further ahead. As Katsuro alley-ooped her forwards, she concentrated as hard as she could. First came the snowfall, which was easy enough to bear with the cold considering she was used to cold Japanese winters at Mahou. Next was the fog, which proved a more difficult obstacle, but Chiaki managed to push through with relative ease thankfully. She had made some progress at least, but she had to keep going.

Calming Presence:

With such a turbulent home life, Chiaki always longed for a sense of calm in her life, away from the shouts and yells of her seemingly always infuriated parents. Upon arriving at Mahoutokoro, she took it upon herself to never make anyone feel the way she did at home. Ever since she stepped foot in the school, knowing that she wouldn't be hearing her parents shouting and yelling, she felt instantly at ease.
When Chiaki started to make friends at Mahoutokoro, she portrayed a happy and bubbly, yet somewhat soothing or calming exterior so her brain would not stray to her parents' fighting. Each of Chiaki's friends reported that they instantly felt calmer when they were around her. Any anger or built up pressure beneath the surface of them was relieved when they would even be simply near her. This attracted many new friends to her. As she quickly befriended two Quidditch players and followed them around like a puppy to their practices, she would be reported to put the team at ease, epecially before a big match.
However, playing Quidditch was never much of Chiaki's interest. There was too much chaos, too many things happening at once. Broom racing was much more her style. There was only one clear objective, and that was to win. Even if that required a little bending of the rules. But before a race, they would never be so nervous as all the fliers that came before her would warn her about. Many would always around her before a race, trying to absorb some of the calm energy she released unknowingly. As soon as she would fly ahead, however, the calm they felt instantly begin to disappear.
However, it was only truly noticeable when Mahoutokoro was the host of a spectularly large fight between several students. Chiaki wasn't aware of the violence occuring in the grounds, so she observed through a window what all the fuss and bother was about. Instead, she was horrified by the brutal punches and kicks that were being thrown. However, as soon as she appeared in person, the fighting died down. Rage could still be seen in the fighters' eyes, but they were no longer fighting. And Chiaki had managed to stop it.
Everybody knew then that Chiaki's presence was... special. Something about the chaos and turbulence from her past meant that she was able to bring the sense of calm that was much needed by many students, and even some of the teachers on occasion.

Cat's Grace:
Reducio
Chiaki's ability to be stealthy came even before she was born. Her mother wasn't even aware she was pregnant with Chiaki until the second trimester, when she started showing symptoms. And then, even after birth, Chiaki had an innate ability to sneak around. She would regularly manage to escape the house when her parents were arguing, and arrive at her grandparents' via bus (that she had managed to sneak aboard). If her parents began to shout when she was in the room, she was easily able to sneak out (though due to the loud yelling it wasn't the most difficult).
After her grandparents' tragic passing in a car accident, Chiaki found that she was no longer able to escape to theirs when things became loud and violent at home. As a result, every time her parents fought for three weeks, she would climb from her bedroom window and run around her small seaside town, looking for a place to hide. And she managed to get pretty far several times. She could easily slip ino buildings or sites that she didn't realise she couldn't be in, and then be gone just as quickly before anybody noticed. Some of her favourite hiding spots were tucked away in overgrown corners of old or run down buildings that she had no business being in, but was also never caught in. There had been one occassion that she thought that she needed to run, but when the guards appraoched, somehow she managed to get away undetected. That was the closest she'd been to serious trouble, but it didn't stop her from returning to that spot.
This habit of sneaking about was just something that she couldn't shake when she arrived at Mahoutokoro. If noticed, people would comment how she skulked around like a cat in the background of almost every situation. Howeverhen she wasn't actively being her bubbly and cheerful self, she very easily blended into the background. Maybe it was because she was surprisingly short, or just wasn't the most noticeable when she wasn't speaking. This allowed her to get away with several midnight scrapes, especially when she would have her private midnight flying sessions with Hiro and Ayako and try to beat her own time of the fastest lap around the school on a broom. There was something soothing about the cold night air, and something thrilling about barely escaping serious trouble, whether it be at school or at the chaos which ought to be known as home.

Evasive Maneuvers:
Reducio
As Chiaki's third year at Mahoutokoro quickly approached, she had already gotten more involved with the school and its activities. Firstly, she'd managed to make her mark on the school's broom racing team, pushing her way forwards and making sure to further her abilities, especially when it came to ducking, weaving and dodging around objects as she pushed to fly at faster and faster speeds. Furthermore, she'd been working on bettering herself and abilities after the Hexwizard Tournament, realising just how out of her depth she had been when she had competed. Facing all of those older students had been absolutely terrifying, and she didn't enjoy feeling so unprepared.
Naturally stealthy and gifted with a feline-like ability to dodge and duck, it only took motivation and dedication for Chiaki to be able to improve her skills. On New Year, she made a promise to herself that by the end of the year, she would have worked on improving her abilities, especially when it came to dodging things, and that included people.
She'd use different exercises, employing her friends' help, such as having them throw pillows at her and have her dodge them, or tennis balls if she was on her broom. But that could only do so much. It wouldn't be the same as ducking branches or weaving through trees. So she made a schedule for herself, and pushed herself to stick to it. Every day, working on the smaller exercises, and twice a week, she would do a lap around the track. The repetition would help her, at least for now, with familiarising herself and allowing her prepare dodges and move out of the way, increasing her times as she shot around the racecourse.
At home during the holidays, she would also continue to work on this newfound talent that she was leaning into and continuously working to perfect. Slipping in and out, moving around things, she would work these exercises into her everyday routine, especially when she was just doing her standard chores. It allowed her to feel more accomplished as she worked on the menial tasks whilst her parents were out of the house.
Finally, she decided to test herself, to see if she was any closer to achieving her goal. She had her friends set up a course she could run through, setting a time in her head she wanted to complete it in. It began on the ground, to test her abilities normally, and then she would complete another on her broom, to make sure the abilities were evenly matched. Whilst her time wasn't as fast as she would've hoped, she had definitely improved, and her newly developed evasive skills were definitely something for her to be proud of.

Muggle Condition:
Reducio
Chiaki had always known her parents were both the sportier type of people, and they had often encouraged a healthy yet competitive spirit within her, which had led to quickly find sports at Mahoutokoro that she loved. However, it wasn't until they separated and she had begun going back and forth between their homes that she would truly realise the extent of this.

Her father had always been a bit of a sports fiend, and he had always encouraged Chiaki to play a sport, often regaling her with tales of his time as a competitive tennis player during his high school years. Whilst, as a muggle, he didn't fully understand the concept of wizarding world sports like broom racing or quidditch, he understood that she was competing, and that was enough for him to insist on keeping her skills sharp.

Every other day on the weeks she would stay with her father, he would drag her out to the public tennis courts at 8am sharp and make her play tennis with him. They'd always start out with simple exercises to test her accuracy, like trying to hit a tennis ball at a target, before moving on to playing an actual game. As much as she'd always grumble about the early morning starts, especially during her school holidays, she grew to enjoy the matches and treasured the time before it was over. The first time she had to switch to her mother's, her dad had only one request of her - to ensure she kept up her training, and she promised to do her very best to uphold that ask.

At her mother's house, Chiaki wasn't exactly sure how she was going to be able to keep up her promise to her father, but her problem luckily found a fairly easy solution through her mother, who had, after the divorce, seemingly taken an interest in the sport of archery. Whilst her mother would visit the local archery range, she would use the time to sneak out to local tennis courts and set up her own drills to keep up her abilities that she had carefully honed. It wasn't long before Chiaki's mother caught wind of this, however, and thus decided to bring her along to the range to pass along her newfound love of archery. Initially, archery was not one her strong suits, however after a year of practise when staying with her mother, Chiaki found that she had only gotten better with her aim, and, even more helpfully, these accuracy skills were transferable to her tennis matches with her father and for her sport at school.

The past year, when not at Mahoutokoro, Chiaki only found her fondness for muggle sports growing and growing as she spent more time at the tennis courts and the archery range, honing these newfound skills she had developed. Whilst they were not perfect just yet, she was confident in her abilities, and knew that this would all prove worth it in the end.

Fearless:
Reducio
From the scared, timid kid she had used to be in her earlier years at Mahoutokoro, Chiaki had grown and matured a lot more in that time. The slight tremble in her voice whenever she spoke up had long since vanished, and she could confidently stand her ground against others that argued back. It may have been the small things, but anyone that had known Chiaki long enough couldn't deny the change in her demeanour from her childhood.

She'd spent so long feeling worried or scared of upsetting others, overthinking the consequences of what could have happened, that she had gotten lost in her own head too many times, and in all honesty, it was something she disliked strongly. This feeling, the anxiety, it kept her docile and quiet, and if she had learnt anything during her time at Mahoutokoro, it was that staying quiet often didn't help produce the same results as when you spoke up against any wrongs or injustice that you witnessed.

Of course, this want for some newfound bravery was much easier said than done. But Chiaki had always heard the saying 'fake it until you make it', and she had to internalise this. It had not been quick progress by any means - she had known this was a quality of hers that she had to keep working on, even if it would take her years to reach the end goal.

And it had taken years. Years of small yet momentous efforts, of not taking the easy decision to back away, run and hide, or lie to pacify a situation; these may have seemed insignificant to others, but to Chiaki, they had been a very big deal when she had made those choices. It marked a point of conscious change for her - she was not about to roll over and be docile once again. Wanting peace didn't mean she had to simply be walked over.

By her fifth year, Chiaki finally felt as if she could see the results of years of trying to put herself out there. The nerves were practically no longer an issue, and she felt no more anxiety towards anything or anyone - however formidable they seemed, she knew that she didn't have to be scared of them. There would still be times where the doubt would creep into her mind, but she had trained herself to ignore it, and persevere regardless. After all, overcoming any initial fear was the most difficult step, and even though it had taken some time, she had finally managed to do that, and her life was better for it.

Maria was not happy with this outcome. She struggled to get back on her broom and by the time she was on, the really gross old dude who shouldn’t be playing against literal kids, had crossed the finish line. Seriously, that guy had to be like 25, why was he even in this race? Maria finally mounted her broom and checked to make sure Hikari was alright. With a thumbs up, she was ready for action!
