Casey got a good laugh out of Cyrus's response. He didn't think much of it at first but considering how he was alleviated to a good mood, Casey figured he could get used to Cyrus's charisma. It was neither cheesy nor forced for the sake of making reactions or a conversation. Cyrus was just genuinely a cool dude. He had a merry air about him. He looked like the kind of guy to take pleasure in the small things, something he felt was true when he saw the look of pure joy when he took a slip of the gum he offered.

The Old Casey would've called it too soon to tell, but This Casey felt no harm in admitting to himself that he quite liked this guy.

"I guess you hafta be a lil' stupid sometimes to learn a lesson or two in life," he chimed back in, smiling. It was one of the odd times in his life where he truly thought that boys were a bizarre bunch. Although Casey knew he was a stretch beyond that given his... Uh. Tasteful social reputation.

He took Cyrus's advice to heart, knowing that he had a good point. It was becoming repetitive but Casey was nodding his head, once again in agreement. "Yeah. I mean, if she's got patience to spare then that should give me some time to get my head outta my butt and think about how to approach her next time... Ideally in a way that's a little more gracious than what happened earlier."

Well, maybe not quite 'Gracious'. He was far from being known for that. But he'd think of something.

He couldn't explain why but Casey suddenly became interested in Cyrus's own experience and exploits with girls. Much like the rest of his composed self, Cyrus sounded like he could handle crush encounters much more smoothly.

"Heh. If I had a sickle for every letter my over-the-top brother sent out to every girl he wanted to be "good friends" with, I'd probably be rich. But you're right. There's always hope. I guess there's a little bit of truth to that whole, 'patience is a virtue' thing everyone goes on about. But unlike him, I'm happy to be patient. With him, you'd have to tether him..."

He laughed a little. Compared to right before he poofed out of existence, Nick was a real nut case when the two brothers were younger.

"How times change in the weirdest of ways," he said fondly.

Hearing Casey laugh was like hearing the jolly tunes of the ice cream truck rounding the corner of the street in Lake Placid after a long, hot summer day. That he had successfully made the other boy laugh meant Cyrus was doing something right with his life! And, to make things even better, Casey returned his banter! Cyrus bounced on his toes, hopefully in a manner that was somewhat inconspicuous, and he nodded sagely in response to Casey's addition. 'So true!' Cyrus agreed. 'If you knew everything, there'd be no lessons to learn.'

And then there was the whole issue with girls. Cyrus still wished he had more wisdom to impart regarding the subject. He could give great advice on how to know if you had a type, or even how to know if you liked a girl, or maybe even what not to do. But this was a bit more complicated than that, and he really hoped that anything he told Casey would at least be somewhat helpful. He nodded slowly as Casey spoke, offering a small hum as he listened to the younger boy's words.

'That's a good idea. And time's always good. Sometimes when someone's got a lot going on, they just need time to sort it out, and then they're good to talk about things.' Cyrus made sure to meet Casey's gaze. 'You've got this! Don't overthink it, and remember that sometimes less is more.'

The more Casey said about his brother, the more Cyrus wondered what it was like to have a sibling that crazy. He could have learned a lot. How many girls had Casey's brother wanted to be 'good friends' with!? Cyrus couldn't imagine doing that himself — he had to find the right person before saying anything like that, and, sure, while love at first sight was definitely a thing, for him, he didn't think it was love at every first sight.

'Your brother certainly sounds like a character,' was all Cyrus could say at first. He was definitely open to hearing more. 'Sure sounds like you got the better end of the mental traits. I think being impatient would be horrible — it'd be so easy to get upset about little things!'

Cyrus cracked a far softer than usual smile when Casey mentioned times changing. 'Yeah, they sure do.' His voice was soft, and he was now staring off into the distance — the words had made him think of his uncle, who, while now dead, had always been such a positive force in his life. And thinking of him made him think of his mother, who, while also no longer present in his life, had planted the seeds of the joy in the little things in him. He glanced at the blades of grass underneath his shoes, and this time, his smile widened to show just a glimmer of teeth.

He fidgeted with the inside of one of his jeans pockets before returning his gaze to Casey. 'You're going to do great with this girl situation, okay? You seem like you've got a strong head on your shoulders. And I'm a Thunderbird, so now you know where to find me if you need anything more, because I'll always be around to listen or try to give advice, even if it's really silly advice.' He chuckled. 'Sometimes silly advice is the best advice, y'know.'

"Interestin'??" Casey nearly choked when Cyrus described his brother as interesting though not quite as if to disagree with him. Nick certainly was interesting but that was before one would get to know him. Casey himself knew that "interesting" wasn't the first word that came to people's minds when they thought of him. Handsome - yes, as envious as Casey gets about it. Resourceful - he'd give Nick that award too. A lot of the problems in the house would've been solved by Nick and the one powerful braincell he had hidden in the back of his head. And if Cyrus hadn't quite caught on yet, he could be quite bizarre at times. Only sometimes. Must be a boy thing to go gaga over the weirdest things, girls being one of them.

Casey chuckled. "Ah, who am I kiddin'... He's certainly interestin'... Part man, part tool". But damn, it was the perfect combination that created the lovable dork Nick Stone was. "Y'know, I'd be lyin' if I said I didn't learn a lot from him because I sure have. I guess in a way, that's the charm of our family. We have our quirks but when we buckle down - and I mean properly buckle down - we do show off some prowess".

Then Casey sighed softly. "I really did feel like I learnt a lot from him growin' up. One thing I wished I got better at was the temper... That's somethin' I think Nick excels at. I mean-- Being good at keeping composed. Unlike me he's good at remaining calm when the situation requires it. But I've been workin' on it... Somewhat. I guess outta the two of us I'm the more emotional one..."

Cyrus spoke up again, with Casey once again feeling compelled to listen carefully. He absorbed everything he was saying without a grain of salt in sight. Casey admired the patience Cyrus was alluding to in his words. That was another thing Casey wished he got better at, something that Nick excelled at too. In a small way, Cyrus was a nice reminder of Casey's older brother. After Cyrus finished, Casey nodded, completely in agreement with him.

"Thanks man". He lightly fist-bumped his older peer. "I'll take that to heart. Maybe then I can graduate from insufferable twit to decent teen. I'm a Thunderbird like you after all. Probably a good time for me to start truly thinkin' like one, even if it means swallowin' my pride and admittin' she needs time before she wants to think about lookin' at me again, let alone talkin' to me".

Casey felt the air change. It was a surprisingly good sensation, like he was feeling some newfound energy and wisdom, all thanks to Cyrus of course. It was official. Casey liked him. It was just a pity that the clouds changed as well, having already travelled across the sky above the boys. Time had passed, and Casey feared it too much of it. Damn. He was too caught up being entertained by Cyrus and his company.

"So... What will you do now? I suppose you've got other things to do than to keep a hawk's eye on yours truly here," Casey joked a little without trying to forcefully shut down the conversation. Quite the opposite in fact. But he knew Cyrus would shoulder more responsibility elsewhere than to feel stuck to Casey for a whole day.

Cyrus's eyebrows lifted to near his hairline Casey began to speak about his brother, and he made sure to make eye contact with the younger boy to show his interest in the topic. He couldn't help but chuckle when Casey referred to his brother as 'part-man, part-tool', but he did have to wonder what some of the context behind that was. He still found himself nodding nonetheless when Casey mentioned people in his family buckling down. 'Huh! That's... really cool, actually. I wish I'd had a brother like that; he sure sounds like he was fun to grow up alongside. I'm assuming he's older than you?'

He gazed at Casey, this time properly sizing him up. 'I don't know, I'd say you seem pretty calm to me. Despite what you said about what happened with the girl. You seem like a pretty chill dude. Maybe your brother's rubbed off on you more than you thought.' But then he cracked another smile. 'Although, I wouldn't say being emotional is a bad thing. Keeps you in touch with the world around you, I think.'

A gentle fondness twinkled in Cyrus's eyes when the two fist-bumped. He'd never had anyone to do that sort of thing with, and maybe now he was getting to see what it might have been like to have a brother. Right now, Elias was the closest thing he had, but even outside of school, they rarely saw each other.

'Yeah, that sounds like a good idea! Just give her a bit of time — if she's got a good head on her shoulders, she'll come around.' He would offer Casey another fist bump, this time with a conspiratorial smile. 'Besides, like I said, you're pretty cool. I'm sure it's going to go great.' A soft chuckle punctuated his words. 'But if you do want to run something by someone first, feel free to seek me out! I'm usually outside, in class or else in my dorm.'

His grin faded slightly when Casey asked what he would do next. 'I... I dunno. I was having a stroll, but it's certainly more fun now. We could keep talking for a bit, if you're still up for it. We could even walk a little while we're at it.' His legs were very grateful for the stretching they'd been able to partake in this afternoon, but even more grateful was his heart for the joy-bringing interaction with Casey.

Whatever Casey said, Cyrus did have a question. 'What's it like? Having a brother, I mean. I'm, well, I'm an only child, and I wouldn't really say my family situation is normal, exactly, so... I'm curious.'

"Oh yeah, yeah. He's older. He would've turned 18 back in August," Casey said, nodding as he scrambled some of his brain cells to do some quick maths. Man, he hated mental arithmetic. "I'm 13, so that makes him older by five years... If my math is right".

Birthdays were always so complicated to work out. How did his parents managed to keep track of his and Nick's brother's birthdays over the years?

He gave Cyrus another fist-bump. Huh. That really became a thing for him, now that Casey thought about it. Emily had her snugs. Casey had fists that weren't for punching out frustration anymore. He was definitely starting to see the appeal of having a 'trademark'. "Thanks bud. Though with how cool you are yourself, bein' a good listener and all, I dunno what I might do when you graduate. I mean, you are a bit older than me as well and eventually you'll... You know..."

That was one thing Casey hadn't quite grown out of. Nick disappearing was still somewhat of a shock, even after all this time. Since meeting Emily, Scout and Zyair, he found himself reluctant to be apart from close friends now that he had re-established bonds, especially when they were filling a pretty large void left by his brother. With the calming air he got from Cyrus, he would be shy to admit he would miss a ball of energy like him once he'd leave Ilvermorny.

"I like the sound of a walk". Casey took position at Cyrus's side, ready to walk when he was. A little more time with him sounded pleasant when Casey considered it.

"So yeah... Havin' a brother. Let's see..." Casey began, pondering aloud on Cyrus's question. "It's mostly a tame ordeal. He's got his life, I've got mine. Sometimes we horse around, wrestle each other, take each other's things, chase each other, argue, then make up, then argue some more... We're kinda like best friends, except we're related".

And Casey wouldn't trade a dime for any of it. "Only child eh? Must be quiet livin' as an independent soul... Well, at least that's what I'd assume in contrast to the loud life with my brother. So, what's bein' an only child actually like?"

'Oh, huh! So, my age.' Cyrus furrowed his brow, checking the math for his own age in his head, and upon ascertaining that he was correct, he breathed a quiet laugh. 'Something like a month older than me. That’s cool!'

Hearing that Casey thought he was a good listener brought a bright smile to his eyes as the skin around them crinkled. His smile remained on his lips even as Casey’s words turned bittersweet. He gazed at the younger boy thoughtfully before saying, 'You’ll be okay, though. I promise. And I can keep in touch, you know.'

They would begin to walk. Cyrus relished the feeling of his shoes squelching against the ground, and from time to time he would point out an interesting facet of nature—a tree that had been struck by lightning, perhaps, or even the sad caw of a bird all alone in the winter.

'That’s really cool.' The closest thing Cyrus had ever had to that was Elias, but as Elias was one of his school friends, did he even count? Cyrus supposed it didn’t really matter; family was family, wherever you found it. But it would have been nice… 'I wish I could’ve grown up with a built-in best friend.'

Cyrus slipped his hands in his pockets and gave a quiet hum when Casey asked about being an only child. 'I dunno. I got bored sometimes. My parents…' Weren’t great? What could he even say about that? '…Well, my mom took the time for me before she died. She really liked art and ducks. But after she died, I lived with my aunt and uncle, and I guess I was a little rascal because I was always running through the apartment like crazy.' He laughed. 'Even if I really preferred being around people my age, I guess I’m grateful. I was able to learn a lot, through trial and error, without putting anyone in danger! Well, aside from my aunt… but she’s used to it, I promise!'

It was odd to talk about his childhood. Cyrus had never been the type of person to dwell on the past. He lived in the present, taking in the moment, really becoming one with everything around him. But he couldn’t deny that the past existed, and it had made him who he was.

'I never asked, but where are you from? I grew up in New York.' Cyrus shot Casey a small smirk. 'We’ve got wicked good bagels and coffee.'

Huh. It only just hit Casey that Nick would be around Cyrus's age. Man, that made Casey feel like a tiny bean in comparison all of a sudden. A near five year gap sounded and felt bigger than Casey initially imagined. They say people feel old but Casey suddenly felt too young. Was that even possible?

That also would've meant Nick would've been graduating this year. Casey chewed the inside of his mouth. Now he really felt young. But he also saw something bittersweet about the thought. If Nick was found, alive, would he consider coming back to complete his school years? Maybe then he would get to see him in the extravagant graduation attire before dipping out of school again for the real world. Everyone and their parents dreamed of their graduation - Casey's parents certainly did - Casey wondered if Nick did too.

Casey realised he was starting to go quiet. He quickly recovered with a chime back into the conversation. "Oh it's fun, but just wait until he starts hoggin' the bathroom. I swear, he could've done with losin' a good twenty minutes with every time he went to take a shower..." He muttered half amusingly to himself, "Vain twit..."

Casey caught on to the change in tone when Cyrus began talking about his home life. His features visibly softened after hearing he lost his mother. His relatives sounded cool though, patient at the very least.

He smiled a little brighter. "I guess we all have a little rascal inside us... Should've seen me tryin' to sneak into my dad's workshop to try some of the potions he would make when I was a kid. Absolute chaos when that happened". He grinned proudly at the memories.

Cyrus then mentioned he was from New York. Ah. Casey could definitely picture Cyrus to grow up somewhere as high profile as there. "I'm an Oregon kid. We've got... Water and mountains," he shrugged with a lopsided smile.

Cyrus's jaw nearly dropped. 'Twenty minutes in the shower!?' He stared at Casey. 'I guess I can kinda understand twenty minutes in front of the mirror, or picking out an outfit, but in the shower? I don't even know a girl who takes that long!'

He continued to listen to the other boy, laughing as the young Ilvermornian recounted stories of potion taste testing. If only his upbringing had been more magical—that would have been so fun! The closest he had done was run onto a movie set in his toddler years. His mother had thought it was cute. 'That's epic. Wish I'd done that. All I did was accidentally swallow mouthwash sometimes. And finger paint the walls once! That was cool.' It was not cool according to his parents, who had still cared for him at the time. Those had been expensive walls, after all. 'Definitely some rascal in all of us,' he agreed after a moment of silence. 'Even those of us who don't really seem it.'

When Casey mentioned Oregon, Cyrus's eyebrows rose. 'Oregon? Really? Like The Oregon Trail?' He'd loved that game as a kid! He rarely won, but it was still really fun to gather food and try not to get sick along the way. 'I've never been. Mountains and water sounds pretty sick, though.' He offered a small hum. 'I guess I'll have to check it out someday—and you should come see New York! Not just the city. The city's nice. But my aunt likes to take me up to Lake Placid, and it's just gorgeous. 10/10, would recommend.'

The change in brightness in the sky alerted Cyrus to the change in the time of day once again, and he bit back a sigh. 'I kinda have to go—looooots of homework! You'd think they wouldn't assign us seventh years so much, considering the exams we also have to study for, but you'd be surprised!' With a dramatic sigh, and then a quick laugh, Cyrus held out his hand for one last shake. 'It was really great getting to meet you! If you'd ever like to hang out again, well, I'm sure you'll see me around! And I'm sure I'll see you around! Well, 'til then!'

With that, and perhaps with a small, joyful wave, Cyrus would head back to the castle to tackle his Transfiguration homework.

Casey grimaced and nodded. "Yeah... If 'vain' didn't describe my brother then I don't know what would..." 'Tosser' maybe? That was the word Emily used for people who did something bonkers and not for actually tossing people out the window like Casey thought it meant. Cursa probably would've used a word adopted from his cousins overseas. Not that Casey really understood the McCoire lingo all that well... What did a 'wanker' even translate to?

Comparing his childhood with Cyrus's, it sounded like the latter also had it pretty good. Casey smiled. That was nice. Cyrus truly did strike him as being a nice lad from a well-deserving comfortable background. Swallowing mouthwash was a new one. Although--"Finger paintin' walls... Man, mom would more than likely murder us if we ever tried that. She's a little bit of a stickler for cleanliness in the house, though I guess all parents are like that. She'd flip a lid if she realised her beige living room wall suddenly had green and blue hand prints on 'em". Casey smirked. "Still, it'd be funny..."

It was actually nice to compare good times with someone like this for once, rather than the dull, miserable and frankly stale repetition of "brother missing, hate life" mantra that Casey knew he still had to work out of. Even talking about their cities was a better use of Casey's time socialising, helped by the fact that Cyrus was just... Awesome.

"New York's been on the bucket list for a while. Gonna try for round four this year of askin' my folks to take me sometime over the holidays". He winked. "Now that I know there's a lake, maybe they'll loosen up some. They're always sayin' it's expensive and whatnot. Still, watchin' a lake ought to be free of charge...!"

Just when Casey felt he was finding his stride, Cyrus looked like he wanted to go. Nah, scratch that. He had to. Stupid homework... Always such a killjoy.

"Yeah, I get that. Pretty sure I have an essay that needs done, but I'd be damned to remember what for," Casey said, scratching the side of his neck awkwardly. That probably needed fixed... Sharpish. "I'll let you head on. But uh... I wouldn't mind doin' this again if you wanted". Casey relaxed when Cyrus reciprocated the same sentiment. Casey wasn't going to let this with a good'un be the last. Not if it was helping Casey actually enjoy a conversation for once.

"See ya around, Cy," Casey said as he knocked his knuckle against his. "Don't be a stranger...!"

He waved when Cyrus did, sighing when he left his view.

Why are boys so much easier to talk to than frickin' girls...?
