"Look boy. I'm not telling you anything if it means you won't go looking for trouble. Grice and Bronks warned me you'd try and sniff out some information from me, but it won't work! Just let my cousin rest in piece and drop it!"
Not even two minutes later after she left him, Casey was marching out of the corridor and bursting through the large doors that took him to his happy place located at the back of the castle. He kept his head down where no one could see his face boiling over with anger and impatience. So much for her help. The last person she could ask about the summer incident and she wouldn't even look at Casey. She really did prepare herself then, knowing Casey would fall further down the rabbit hole of the case of his missing brother. That also would've explained why she kept projecting dirty looks at him every time they passed each other, no matter if they made eye contact or not. Everything made sense now when Casey found out she was the cousin of one of the ones who died in the incident. Casey even planned to offer condolences for her loss while he would attempt to ask if she knew anything.
All that went down the drown before any of that could kick off. As soon as Casey approached her, she gave him the foulest look in the book and with the grace of a troll, told him to piss off. It wasn't even that Casey was trying to be nosy or insensitive to begin with. He was looking for answers but always did his best to do it without crossing lines. Not that the Fifth Year student in question could care less about any of it anyway.
All of which has now culminated in Casey arriving right into his little sanctuary of stones, grass and a view of the foggy channel down the side of Mount Greylock. He paced this way and that way, muttered this and that under his breath before standing still, his feet firmly planted on the ground, his shoulders pushed back, his chin raised towards the sky and said--
"FRICKIN' GIRLS!"
The "GIRLS" echoed down the mountain side until the wind couldn't carry it any further. After a tremendous, tired groan of defeat, Casey picked up two stones at his feet and threw them up and down with one hand, one after the other. A bit of fidgeting usually helped funnel tension out of him, as anyone who knew him would guess.
Already with every scrape of the stones that hit his palm before being tossed up into the air again, Casey's mood settled, or at least enough not for him to shout "FRICKIN' GIRLS" a second time.
Instead, he mumbled it.
"Frickin' girls..."

Now that he was back at Ilvermorny after the holidays, Cyrus had been making a point to return to his pre-Hogsmeade optimism. His eyes now scoured the cloudy sky, and although their usually-luminous blue was dulled from the lack of sunlight, his gaze held a twinkle it had lacked for months. He smiled to himself as he strolled through the grounds, something he had not done with a light heart for a while now.
There were not many animals out, a fact that made Cyrus even more comfortable. He strolled, pleasantly alone with nothing that could go wrong — or so he thought.
"FRICKIN' GIRLS!"
Cyrus jolted in his walk and stood still, head turning back and forth, his hair floating in a confused little halo around his face. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his jeans and stared ahead of him as if simply staring would help him find the poor soul who was not happy with girls. It took him a moment before he began his journey to find the source of the yell, his leisurely stroll having turned into a peppy jog as he headed towards the direction of the noise.
He wondered for a moment if it was a stupid idea to head towards the noise, if it might be troublesome to do so, but he thought better of his doubts. If he could help someone, it was all the better for him; he would make sure of it.
After not too long of running, he happened upon a boy with some stones, and he hurried to a halt. Cyrus raised one of his hands in polite greeting, giving the boy a radiant smile. 'Hi! I just wanted to make sure everything was okay! I heard a strange voice say "frickin' girls" and I just had to make sure everyone was alright!'

Casey's face went blood red when he spotted someone enter his space. An older student by the looks of it and going by the justifiable "Huh??" look on his face, he might have just heard Casey's outburst from mere moments ago. Casey died a little inside.
"Hey..." he responded eventually, being as brave as he could muster when the embarrassment finally shifted away from him. "That was just... Uh... I'm alright, just--"
Maybe not then.
"Have you uh... Ever just hated something for no good reason? Like it just scratched you the wrong way and it just sticks to you like a grudge?" He had no idea where he was going with this. "That's kinda what happened to me today... Not girls! Well-- Just-- Someone who happens to be a girl..."
The split second that Casey acknowledged within himself that he was digging himself further into his own grave was the same time he made a face like he had no clue on what just happened to him. It was as if he already forgot what he said and was panicking over what it was he was babbling helplessly about.
He could've just said he had a bad temper and that was it. No self-depreciation or complication required.
The only saving grace was that the older of the two was a boy. Had it been a girl, Casey would've been cooked.
Casey scratched the side of his hand with his nail as he tried to play off the last five minutes like none of it happened. "Heh... Life at 13, right...?"

Cyrus's immediate thought upon seeing the boy's red face upon his entrance was that he had embarrassed or even scared the poor kid. He quickly shoved his hands into his pockets, keeping his grin on his face, but he now toned it down as best he could. Sometimes people said he was 'too much' and this was probably one of those times.
Then, the boy was... asking him things? Oh, no, he hoped this wasn't one of those situations where people assumed that just because Cyrus was old, he knew things! He still listened with all his heart. He met the younger boy's gaze and nodded along with his words, weighing them against his experiences. And... 'Actually, I think the only time I've had a grudge against someone was for a really good reason. And it was only once.'
He was not a saint, but he didn't feel angry very often. Only when he remembered the smell of burnt flesh did disgust and anger churn in his gut, did he think violence could be the proper response. He knew it was wrong and was usually able to shut those thoughts down easily.
He did understand where the boy was coming from, though. 'But I'm one of those people who doesn't get into arguments,' Cyrus admitted. 'I think if I had more negative interactions with people, it would be more likely for me to have dealt with that. Do you want to talk about it?' He laughed gently. 'Sometimes it can be hard to talk to girls. I've embarrassed myself a lot talking to them in the past.'
He would attempt to get closer to the boy, hands still tucked into his pockets. Cyrus only barely registered the boy's comment about being 13, but he nodded nonetheless. 'Well, thirteen is certainly an age to be! I'm Cyrus, by the way, a seventh year.'

OOC Notes: So sorry if this feels poorly written! My brain's been turned to mush after studying >o<
Alright. Phew.
Not a total disaster for a conversation starter. Casey sprouted a lot worse in past attempts to be social with his peers. In all likelihood, this guy wasn't 100% convinced yet, but at least there was something in him gracious enough to humour Casey's terrible excuse after he essentially shook the grounds with his temper over a girl. How incredibly ridiculous. Cliché. One might even say it was a perfect blend of the two.
Whatever the case, Cyrus - as Casey had come to learn his name as - was taking this all remarkably well. It was difficult enough for Casey to reconnect and build friendships after an unnecessarily long period of being angsty, but now he was trying to redeem himself in what might be the most awkward way he could've done this possible; getting angry at thin air for no plausible reason.
"Casey..." he responded quietly. The least he could do is introduce himself in kind. Not just that but if Cyrus ever forgot his face, the name would stir up the amusing memory of how a "Casey" yelled into the open about girls or something.
He found himself lightening up at Cyrus's upbeat attitude, a welcome contrast to Casey's foul mood that was slowly being chipped away at. Casey even laughed a little when Cyrus answered him.
"Heh... I didn't think I'd be having girl trouble this early. And it ain't even because I got a crush on her. I just wanted to say somethin' to her. Nothin' bad, just... Well, it's a bit complicated. But she was havin' none of it."
He gave another laugh, only this time it was a bit less humorous.
"Girls can uh... Be quite headstrong sometimes."

If Cyrus were honest with himself, despite the strange introduction, this kid seemed pretty cool. He did his best to take note of the kid's name — Casey, something he hadn't heard often before, but that, he supposed, he would remember just as well. He nodded with understanding when Casey mentioned having surprise at having girl problems so early.
'I don't think it's super rare. I mean, girl issues, at your age, that is. I had a really weird encounter with a girl when I was thirteen.' He remembered it fondly; although he had definitely made a fool of himself, it had resulted in a friendship and smiles and laughter — or maybe something more as the years had gone by, and then nothing more as they had drifted apart. But that was the nature of the world. Things came and went. People came and went.
He had trailed off, lost in whimsical memory, before he came back to Casey's words. Right. He was older and wiser and something like that. 'Girls are weird,' Cyrus offered, but the words sounded empty even to his own ears. 'But if it's a bit complicated, surely she'll be willing to hear you out sometime? You could write her a letter and explain things if that might help you organise your thoughts.'
His heart sank when Casey's laugh turned less joyful. Sad laughs were the worst laughs. Laughter was supposed to be the best medicine, not something that sapped away at one's soul. His eyebrows drew closer together, and he wrung his hands out in front of him. 'Headstrong? That's for sure.' He offered the boy a small smile, taking the liberty to step closer to him — likely not close enough to make him uncomfortable, but rather close enough so that he could speak more quietly. 'If you're okay with telling me, what happened? I can listen, or try to offer advice, but do be warned, I'm probably not the best at solving conflicts. It's up to you, though.'

Casey smiled at Cyrus's response. All of a sudden he didn't feel so awkward in front of him. "I suppose girl stuff is almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy as soon we hit our teen years. I remember my older brother, as soon as he woke up to puberty and teen-hood, he had at least ten crushes."
Nick may have always been the outgoing one out of the brothers, but it was almost laughable how far he'd go to try and impress a girl. One time he bought every bouquet of flowers just to try and impress a girl he only held a crush for a week for. At least their mother was a fan of gardening and knew how to put them all to good use when he was "politely" rejected.
He thought back to that Fifth Year girl. God help the poor boy that she would choose as her boyfriend one day, if not already suffering through the experience. A half humorous chuckle escaped him.
"Somehow I don't think she'd wanna see me anytime soon. Well... She's a lil' older than me anyway, so maybe it's for the best, heh."
He felt a good air about Cyrus. In a short amount of time he was able to turn a sour moment into a joke. He felt comfortable telling him what happened, now that he didn't feel so hot and bothered by the ordeal anymore.
"I knew someone who uh... Passed away some time ago now. And I didn't realise they had a cousin who attended Ilvermorny. It was that girl. I was gonna try and be nice and offer condolences to her, just outta respect, but I guess she wasn't lookin' for any. I think her reaction to me bringing him up set her off and then that bothered me a little bit..."
Casey couldn't be mad though. He had no right to judge. Mentioning someone who died to someone they were close to was bound to snap a twig. He went through it himself for a time and Nick was only missing, not confirmed to be dead. But the experience was still eerily similar, wasn't it?
"I shoulda stayed quiet, honestly. I mean, I landed that on her and she never even met me until right just now. Not the classiest of introductions, is it?" He laughed nervously.

Somehow, this boy reminded Cyrus of himself when he was younger. Maybe it was that the passage of time helped you see yourself in a different light. But whatever the case, Casey was, quite frankly, just a guy who, in Cyrus's opinion, certainly did not deserve all the stress of 'girl stuff'.
Nonetheless, he couldn't refrain from letting out a friendly chuckle at Casey's account of his older brother's dilemma. 'Oh man, ten!? That's crazy, I can't imagine what that'd be like.' In his laughter and surprise, Cyrus had bent slightly at the middle and had to straighten himself. 'I guess I've been really lucky in comparison!' His sky-blue eyes sparkled as he glanced warmly at Casey. 'I hope you will be, too. After this, I mean. Or during this. Well, you know.'
He gave a slow, deliberate nod of understanding in response to Casey mentioning that the girl likely wouldn't want to see him, and was older than him, anyway. That made Cyrus think that maybe the girl was the problem, if she were having beef with a younger kid, who, according to Cyrus, probably hadn't done anything wrong. He chewed the inside of his cheek, wondering how to respond, but Casey kept talking and spared him the potential awkwardness of saying the wrong thing.
'Ohhhhh.' A lot of people at the school had encountered death recently. Cyrus brought one hand up to brush his hair out of his face, catching a whiff of the citrus essential oil he'd taken to rubbing on his wrists since last October. The scent brought his warm smile back in full force. 'If it were me, I wouldn't've blamed you. But I guess it makes sense, too. Some wounds are still fresh.' He reached into the left pocket of his jeans and pulled out a piece of mint gum, which he unwrapped and popped into his mouth. 'I don't blame you for having been bothered by it, either! The way people treat us can really have an impact, even if they didn't mean to hurt us—oh, by the way, do you want a piece of gum?'
If Casey accepted, Cyrus would hand him a wrapped piece of Orbit gum, but he would not let the momentary distraction of gum stop him from trying to be there for Casey. 'I think it's a good thing that you reached out. Like, the wound's still fresh, sure, but even if you mentioning her cousin was like alcohol on a cut, that's bound to help in the long term, I think. Like stopping infection. She'll know you at least care? Your condolences are probably more than others have given, or said...' He trailed off momentarily, finally registering that the girl hadn't really met Casey before. 'Oh! That makes a bit more sense.' Cyrus nodded to himself, keeping his gaze on the younger kid to make sure he was doing alright.
'I guess it's not the greatest introduction! But you can always apologise, or, I don't know, try to show her that you're willing to be her friend no matter what? In times such as these, companionship is always nice.'

OOC Notes: 💛
Casey scratched his nose, feeling the second-hand embarrassment as he remembered the agonising days of watching his idiot brother try and fail to woo girls one after another when each one cringed at his behaviour towards them. At one point, Casey started feeling sorry more for them than he did for his brother. I mean, how awkward is it to see your older sibling stand on the roof of a house and play the banjo whilst trying to serenade the girl living next door? Too awkward.
"Never seen a man desperate like that in my life..." Casey said quietly, almost cringing to say it any louder. Hormones were one thing... But that was just an eyesore to witness in the days of Casey's innocent-but-still-aware- age. Laughing it off with Cyrus in hindsight was the only thing that was somewhat forgiving Nick for being such a goofball in that regard.
Honestly, Casey was gradually giving Cyrus more and more credit. His years have clearly earned him a great deal of patience and wisdom. Casey was nodding his head after his every sentence, taking it all in without any grains of salt. He took up on his offer of gum and chewed away at it whilst they kept talking.
"Yeah... I will admit I did kind of thought more with my ass than my actual head when I approached her," he said. "I guess that's kinda a personal grievance of mine, bein' impatient and all that. It's not until too late that the actual thinkin' part kicks in these days. I'll try again another time when she ain't lookin' at me like she wants to push me down a flight of stairs... I suppose I oughta be grateful she only gave me harsh lip, huh...". His lip quirked into a smile at the end. In retrospect, the whole interaction could've gone a lot worse.
"You know a lot about how to handle stuff like that. At least that's what it sounds like to me," Casey said. "You must have had experience tryna work with girls, right? You sound capable of gettin' along better than I can at least anyway, heh".

At Casey's quiet quip, Cyrus couldn't help but cringe in solidarity. But even as he cringed, he couldn't help but laugh along at the notion. Even Cyrus himself doubted his desperate days were far behind him; perhaps if a girl caught his fancy, he would go back to embarrassing himself in hopes of self-endearment.
But perhaps that was just how it was with girls. Maybe you had to embarrass yourself a little bit.
Cyrus's nearly-ever-present grin widened when Casey accepted the gum, and he bounced gently on his feet, savouring the minty flavour of his own. The chilly breeze ruffled his hair and allowed him to close his eyes, finding that he could very well savour the moment of being in the great outdoors with an interesting person, that this was way more enjoyable than most anything else he could have been doing.
He gazed at Casey with intrigue when the boy mentioned his impatience. He nodded understandingly while taking the boy's words to heart. 'It's certainly not an issue to be impatient and all,' he mused quietly. 'Especially if it's just part of who you are!' He snickered. 'Besides! Thinking's overrated.'
He did pause before going on. 'I'm sure she'll forgive you, especially if you give her the opportunity to see that you're really a super cool person, like you are right now with me! Shouldn't be too hard, just be yourself!' Even if Casey was the type to speak without thinking, Cyrus doubted the younger boy should have to change anything about himself just for the sake of others. No, not at all.
'Uhh... I guess?' Cyrus's grin turned lopsided as he laughed quietly, almost self-consciously. 'I've had, like, one crush, like ever. She's not really around anymore, dunno what happened. But I definitely made my fair share of humiliating mistakes! When I met her, I was in my ultra-dramatic phase, like even more dramatic than I am now. Ohhh boy, was that problematic. I was also not that smart, and it showed.' He chuckled, this time more self-assuredly. Something twinkled in his eyes as he stretched his arms out before once again slipping his hands into his pockets. 'But she did seem to like me! We exchanged letters a lot and met up for ice cream sometimes. So there's always hope, no matter what you do!'
But perhaps that was just how it was with girls. Maybe you had to embarrass yourself a little bit.
