The Spring Soirée

Dennis grinned his Tumberton grin as he drew a snicker from Avis. He was happy that the awkwardness had passed so quickly for now. Leave it to Avis to know what to do. “I never thought of it like that wow…” Dennis said wide eyed, as she described this all as a coincidence. Whether or not he was that naive, who can know for sure, he himself didn’t know from one moment to the next!
She accepted his offered hand and his goofy grin got sweeter and more relaxed. Dennis was not surprised that a talented duelist would also be a confident dancer. What was dueling if not a magical dance where sometimes people got maimed?
As they danced, there was a shift in tone. Was it something he said? It was peculiar to the redhead that someone so confident could be lacking words and avoiding eye contact. She finally fumbled out something about the next dueling stage. So we are going to be talking about work, Dennis thought wryly. He smirked and said, still trying to catch her eye contact, “I mean, the way I hear it, it just sounds like luck that students gather according to their houses to throw spells at one another. Funny how that happens from time to time, huh?”
Dennis still got the sense that, despite her being so competent a dancer, she still felt awkward. Perhaps it was from the hedge maze duel and what happened there or perhaps she just wasn’t actually into dancing. He acquiesced to her feelings and managed to bring them back to where they started. He let go of her and, handing her his card, said, “Thank you for the dance, Avis. You are really talented. And you look good tonight,” he left that as a tease perhaps he meant jokingly the opposite normally, “I hope you find more dancing partners. Enjoy your night!”
Once the cards were signed he had one thing left to do. One thing he would not be able to avoid or he’d regret it for as long as he would be reminded of this ball. Dennis nodded to Avis as a final farewell, took a deep breath, and finally faced the direction he had been avoiding all this time.
—————————
As he would recount later, as he turned around a perfectly sweet song started playing and she was aglow in her stunning dress, even from this distance she shined brightly, like beacon of…Dennis wasn’t quite sure how to finish that thought and would stop short even in his retellings.
As if they had a mind of their own, his feet carried him, quite against his will at first, forward toward the source of his thoughts and feelings. The only person to make sense in his world. With each step, clarity. Their green eyes met when he drew closer, should she dare to look his way. His expression soft and eyes that danced in the lights. Nothing could stop him from reaching her, she surprised him once, but she would not escape him this time.
No matter if there were dancers in the way or some forlorn individual wandering aimlessly, he sidestepped and parried never wavering in his singular focus. What their look meant, what his feelings, no, his heart was yearning to say, he refused to acknowledge, all he knew is he needed to be there.
And just like that, he was close enough to see Rai sitting at the table next to Meyra, the spell, for the time being, broken. His gate relaxed and his gaze fell on his other friend. He arrived at the pair and turned seamlessly to face Rai, as if he had never seen Meyra before. “Oh, hey, Rai!” Dennis said in his most convincing Dennis voice. “It’s really a bummer that I have to get going. I don’t really want to miss the fun at the twisted tavern! I really wanted the chance to dance with you. Maybe next time! See you around, Rai!” He waved cheerfully and turned to make his departure.
As he turned, hoping his cape obstructed Rai’s view, well aware nothing ever really escaped the racer’s notice, Dennis, refusing to make eye contact now with Meyra, dropped his hand to his side. His knuckles brushing against Meyra’s. His heart leapt into his throat, his breath caught in the same spot. As he stepped away, two fingers briefly, and ever so gently, grabbed onto Meyra’s for one last lingering second. Was there a squeeze? Was there a reluctance to let go? One thing was certain: the gesture was no accident. Before Dennis lost his mettle, he hastened his steps and vanished out the entrance without another glance - leaving the Great Hall and making his way to the Twisted Tavern.

𝕿he stranger the turned around to see who had stupidly crashed into him, "Woah. Are you ok?” She looked down to untangle her dress as she nodded, "Yeah, I am! Are you?" He looked fine and continued, “This might be a little bit crazy, but we have dance cards, so…care for a dance?” Violence's eyes widened. She didn't know whether this would be the right thing to do or not but she agreed. Azzure was lost in the crowd so she strained her neck to see if he could be seen. She shrugged as she didn't see him, "Well, I shouldn't worry about this. It's just a dance, nothing else." She looked at Dennis and smiled as he introduced himself. "God how dumb of me, I didn't even ask him his name. Eh, it's fine." “I’m Dennis by the way." "Hey Dennis, I'm Violence! It's really nice to meet you." Violence tried not to trip too much over her dress this time- this time... again her thoughts wandered to Azzure, and how just a few minutes ago they were dancing. "Shush, Violence, enjoy the now, you can sort the thing with Azzure later." she told herself. Dennis, surprisingly, was very good with dancing and also not stepping on her dress again and again. He commented, “If I wore dresses, I’d never be able to dance, I don’t know how you do it! Its really amazing." She threw her head back, laughing, "My mom chose this dress for me, so I had to wear it. It's really pretty, I know, but it's too much to handle. Thankfully I haven't fallen on anybody till now. That would be embarrassing, heh."
⊱────────☽✮☾────────⊰
As they danced across the room, she felt herself relaxing. This dance was fun, carefree. Dennis was also quite joyful and Violence enjoyed her time with him. She hoped to meet him even after the dance. Her eyes, however, were still moving across the room, hoping to find Azzure. She didn't see him anywhere but she locked eyes with a first year girl. Violence didn't remember her name but she had seen her around. She seemed to be looking at Dennis with... was it jealousy, or was it envy? Then, she caught eyes with Violence, and noticing Vi's gaze, she looked away- her face flushed. "Hmm, what was that about? Well, I'll ask Dennis, or maybe her, after the dance." The song finally ended and Violence decresed the pace of her steps, stopping altogether after a few moments, as Dennis said, “It was really nice to meet you! I hope we get a chance to see each other again! I will definitely be able to remember you." She smiled, as they signed each other's dance cards. "We'll definitely meet! And thankyou! Also, you should go and talk to the girl who's been staring at you for the past five minutes. She looks jealous," she chuckled slightly as he walked away, shouting over his shoulder, “I hope you find who you were looking for." "Oh God! Was it that visible? Oops." She laughed but turned and walked in the opposite direction, as she noticed someone wearing a... chicken? What? She blinked twice, thinking it may be her eyes that couldn't process. Nope, it's a chicken alright. She walked over to see a guy she hadn't seen before. "Hey! Pretty, uhh... unique choice for the dress. How did you end up wearing this? I'm Violence, by the way. Violence Bloodthorn. Ooh, this is a nice song, wanna dance?"

“Aw, that’s cute, thank you! You’re very cool too!” Claimed the Ravie, smiling bright and reaching to Dev and briefly patting her shoulder. It was a spontaneous move, which didn’t seem weird or misplaced at all, at least not to Lucy.
“I’m sure you’d love our garden! There are so many trees and cute places where one can hide when playing hide and seek. Lore once couldn’t find me for hours, hehe. Plus, we’ve got a brand new swing! Got it last Christmas - best thingy Father Christmas could’ve possibly brought! That guy...” The last two words, did she hummed with pure admiration. “He must really be reading all those Christmas letters kids are writing to him. Hats off! If I were Father Christmas, no one would get anything, ‘cause reading is just bo. Ring!”
For some reason (which was likely that her parents kept her believing that Father Christmas was the one bringing gifts) Lucy seemed to still believe in Father Christmas, for she was speaking about him as if him bringing gifts was as clear a thing as a day.
“Uhm... and what did you get last Christmas that made you really happy?” Asked Luce, genuine interest shining in her eyes, as she looked at her new American friend.
“Speaking of gardens, it was written on the poster, that a part of the Soirée will take place on the Grounds too. Would you like to go, check it out? They might be serving other sorts of snacks there.” With her last sentence, she nodded her head, being as excited as ever. “I mean, these snack were delicious, but... well, there’s never enough snacks, right?”
Lucy grinned. Snack were the best, there was hardly anything better than food. Except magic, naturally.
As Dev spoke about ice-skating, Luce’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped a little. She was apparently delighted to hear that Dev was on positive terms with the activity. “Let’s make a deal then! I’ll go to New York during Christmas holidays in the future, and when I do, I’ll let ya know and we will go ice-skating to the Rockefeller Center together. How does it sound to you?” Suggested the girl as she gave Dev an expecting look.
After Eonaria left, Luce noticed that Dev was a little out of sorts. Being as simple to read as Channing was, with her emotions always getting the best of her and displaying themselves very easily through her face expression, she couldn’t refrain from a sigh at Dev’s mood.
“Hey... ya okay?” Lucy beeped quietly, worried. She paused for a few secs, then went on: “Wanna know what my grandpa says about purebloods?” The corners of Lucy’s lips started to twitch upwards.
As Dev spoke about the chicken guy again, Lucy grinned. “Totally! I mean... the theme of the soirée is light fantasy, but...hey, chickens can be magic! Especially the KFC ones.” Lucy giggled at her own joke. “Or, he could claim was an ostrich once but then he drank Red Bull and this is the outcome.”
“Really? I know nothing about Ilvermorny. What is Sorting like at your school? How many houses can you get sorted into, and which one is yours?” Asked the girl curiously.

The girl, Andronica, apologized, and Graci was grateful. Not because she felt this girl needed to apologize, but because she wasn't being condescending anymore.
"Okay, well, it seems your friend left, so now we're stuck with each other. Though, it's not a bad thing. I think you're a great person, initial bumping into aside, of course." Graci smiled at the girl, now partially determined to be friends. She did realize she could be a bit straight forward, but with people it was usually the way to go.
"I'm not much of a dancer myself," Graci admitted, "but if you want to I can... though I prefer we'd just stand somewhere and talk."
Graci noticed how different this girl seemed. She was positively wonderful. Kind, but with some gall and attitude. They could be good friends. And maybe they could get close enough to see what happened. Unless she wasn't comfortable with that. Everyone there, in Graci's mind, was too young to have such burdens weighing on their shoulders.
Really, no one deserved that. Ever. She wondered who made way for such hurt in her heart. Then she chastised herself. She'd known this girl for the better part of two minutes. It wasn't her place to wonder. Or not verbally at least. She was a curious girl, so who could blame her?

Hogwarts brought reluctance.
An explanation was needless, redundant after the images that had been carved into skulls, for the tears shed were too salty to sustain the flowers from which were germinated and grown. Nothing was ever born out of meaningless violence, except for the mulishly clinging mark it left on anyone's hearts. For the following months there was nothing more he could think of than his best friend at the brunt of the attack, the scenes replaying on loop in a mind that fought for silence, until they finally gave way to simple words, piecing up a story told by the unreliable narrator of a narrative he never chose to live. Hogsmeade. Explosions. Nikolai. The latter whose safety was a miracle in of itself already. The second miracle, of course, was his presence by Hans’ side tonight. The third miracle was how well he was pulling off the costume. Having not registered himself for a dress-up party, the only thing he knew about his own garment was its heirloom nature.
“You are going to be the most handsome space pirate in this room,” Hans whispered into Nik's ear as they entered the Great Hall, arm slung across the other's shoulder as he lured the boy into false security, “Because nobody else would have chosen a costume as ridiculous as you did—” he cleared his throat, eyes flashing with humour, “Ridiculously good, I mean.” In all frankness though, as an adorer of all things science fiction, how could he ever hold any negative opinions on the choice.
The world could have done so much more for the beauteous joining of two kindred souls. Hans intended tonight to be everything their first ball together failed to fulfil. Then they were barely together at all, distant figures in a room made emptier by grief. Yet instead of entering with slouched shoulders and lowered heads, today they deserved their shared laughter and close proximity. Watching the in and out partings of the fray, the strife a dramatic enjoyment rather than an insensitive dishonour as they sat back and enjoyed their childish chaos. Despite the claims of maturity which pubescence, for the love of Merlin they were all still children, and Stribog above could let them be children for once. They could never return to a day before October 14th, but one less, two less, a hundred less than infinity still circled back to the fathomless number, and Hans could settle for that.
Slowly, warily, and sometimes guiltily, he was learning to enjoy his time.
“I still don’t particularly trust the food of Hogwarts and I never will,” he said with a soft laugh while his eyes snagged on culinary creations he thought could never be edible, “But I think curiosity has gotten the better of me and I will go check them out. Grab a seat for us somewhere, my spacefaring Kapitän?” Gesturing towards the table, he would leave with a promise for swift return. First mistake of the night.
The refreshments, at the very least, looked to be a brighter assortment. Although nothing appetising could have been spawned from an arrangement lodged with an era in the Great Depression, he doubted that even made a contending factor on his loss of edacity that night. Not even the most comforting of foods could have done anything on the hopeless atmosphere post-Pyre, not in his state of desperate despair. Today, months that somedays felt like seconds, somedays years later, they were not in California, but he certainly knew people who were dancing to forget tonight. For now though, Hans had no thoughts against admiring the creativity of a cockentrice, a half-suckling pig, half-cock invention he could understand for what it went out of fashion for.
An unavoidable sight at fêtes however, was not the questionable choices of nourishment, but the utter amount of people. By no means an unsavoury predicament, there was nothing Hans loved more than crowds, their applause, their cheers, their endless support and being raised up onto their shoulders; he could drown in the gold they decked him in. In the crowd, however, was by all means a different matter, was blending in, being pushed and shoved until all their ostentatious colours and extravagant costumes bled into one another. While he would smile and nod and relish in the thrill of the blooming friendships at his fingertips, it was a surefire recipe for a disaster he would rather not get caught in the crossfire of.
Well, speak of the devil.
All irony intended, he appeared not with horns and a tail but an innocent girl. A thin, delicate bag of bones wrapped up in a blue dress, her frame proved dangerously out of balance as the mug brimming with beverage teetered in her arms, and, before the misfortunately ungainly girl or her unfortunately unsuspecting victim could react, the crude imitation of his national drink was soon not down her throat but his shirt. Hans was one to rarely have qualms against the muck and dirt of childhood, grown up playing in mud, begrimed and besmirched with streaks of blacks and browns. He was one to rarely grow irritated either, with a tolerance for people borne out of overexposure, his life one of casual indifference as every issue was dismissed under a waving hand. Yet, a reflection of both parents’ high standards for cleanliness, food out of the plate and drinks out of the cup was your first-class ticket to a fistfight.
For a mere moment of complete stillness, they only stared, chocolatey eyes locking onto dusty blue ones as they fought to blink the vexation out of the usually tender pools, pupils searching for a glimmer of remorse or guilt just to convince himself not to ascend a mere accident into malicious intent. As a second ticked by after the other, initial umbrage dimmed as the urge to stalk back to his table slunk away, for he disallowed his first impression to be one set in meaningless disgruntlement. Furrowed brows loosened, narrowed eyes relaxed as intrusive thoughts were banished in return for a proper reply to even their potholed beginning of an acquaintance.
Silence, after all, was no strong suit for the boisterous.
Therefore, like any other barrier, it must be broken. Barely before their wordlessness sedimented in the patch of butter beer seeping onto his skin, Hans cleared his throat as honey-smooth words slipped out, and although in a stream of saccharine sweetness, each were calculated as they masked his disdain for the gauche, maladroit young attendee. To unleash venom in the face of a mere accident was to attack the innocent unprovoked, and however vexed he may be by the misstep, it was not enough to trouble himself over what was only trivial. Eyes downcast as they flickered over the orange creeping down the white of his shirt, he said in a dry, deadpan humour (read: gritted teeth and self control), “Pity you’re below drinking age, I would have preferred if you spilt red wine instead; at least that matches the colour.”
Waving his wand in two consecutive arcs, an only half-heedful cleaning spell was produced from the tip of a wand held between loose, careless fingers, with the softly incanted Scourgify.
Finally finding the right footing as the familiar enigma of a smile graced his impatiently awaiting lips once more, his head tilted to the side, as if challenging her for words or if their mischanced encounter would be merely forgotten as a luckless incident.
If this was a staring contest though, Hans had no chance of winning without breaking into laughter at least once or twice.

MODERATION ROUND ONE
Image created using Bing AI.How does one begin a ball? With a bang, of course. An international student(@Prat Pass) quickly spiked some of the drinks available to the public, and was quickly noticed by first year Gryffindor, (@Meiyu Xiang). He quickly slipped out of the Great Hall to escape to the Garden of Eden, leaving what could become mayhem in his wake. Quite a few students reached for drinks following his actions. Thankfully, only a select few were actually spiked, and those that were spiked were quickly caught by their respective patrons, meaning that even if someone was under the effect of the awful potion, they at least knew why.
There were many other activities going on around the ball. There was much dancing, chatting, and… brave costumes(@Joseph Sims). It seemed no one was interested in eating any of the raw potatoes, not that anyone could really blame them. It did appear that tempers were rising however, after an incident of clumsiness led to some harsh words and rude looks.(@Graci Laren) Someone else had to cast the Scouring Charm on themselves due to a spill- it seems everyone in the Hall was a bit clumsy as of the excitement of the annual springtime event.
As people filled the hall, the background noise grew to be louder, with sound bouncing off the walls. The music was still audible over the chatter, and lights continued to steadily illuminate the room as the ball continued, despite and pranks, mischief, or miscues. The food was slowly disappearing into mouths, and the chairs at tables were steadily filling. The centerpieces of each table remained untouched, no flowers stolen for sweethearts. However, the ball was not the only event occurring. Some were forced to leave due to prior obligations, like the Twisted Taverns, and others wanted to skip into the sunset with their lovers at the Gardens of Eden. However I highly doubt that either had the charm, opportunity, nor enthusiasm that the Spring Soirée had mustered. The ball was on, and even more dramatic than anyone could have expected.

The Spring Soirée
"It's a dance event, a Ball! Sure you too picked a card? So...I assume no one wants it full with only one name written in it right?" Meyra asked with fake nonchalance, still doing her best to be perceived as someone who acted with complete self-confidence. Though was impossible to say who was she really trying to convince more, Raizel or herself. Because, evidently, the sight of Dennis dancing with other girls made her heart weigh heavily inside her chest, as if it were closed inside a fist that tightened more and more, every time she dared to look at him and noticed that every time there was a different dress fluttering and spinning in his arms. Not that the dresses were the real problem, not at all.
When her cousin looked away to the dance floor, to the place where Meyra knew she would find Dennis, the young Gryffindor could not stop herself from following Raizel's warm, brown eyes. Eyes that were shining with that spiked glow of mischief, being proof that Rai was having fun messing with her. And could Mey blame her for that? If she was wearing her cousin's shoes wouldn't she be doing the exact same thing? Hadn't she done it? Maybe she had stumbled upon the perfect scenario to get a taste of her own poison. Karma was an uncontrollable beast indeed.
As green-amber eyes found once again the red-haired boy on the dance floor, her heart almost stopped and fell at her feet. Last time she had look, the whirling dress was in shades of blue, now it was black with silver details, with a multi-layered skirt that reminded her of a princess of the night. It was impossible to avoid the sting she felt within her chest as a toxic and vile feeling spread to her heart. Why was it so easy for him to move from one dance to another, from one partner to another, while she continued to drown in those feelings he had left glued to her? Why couldn't she also shake away that moment, detach herself from reliving it? It seemed unfair... and she couldn't... or rather, she didn't want to acknowledge the reason why.
Meyra felt Raizel's eyes fall on her, even without looking back at her cousin. She couldn't stop looking, while Dennis talked with that beautiful girl in that stunning dress. She couldn't help but let her gaze grow sadder, her expression became slightly pained, and her emotions were exposed for all to see. What was happening with her? She was always able to hide her emotions, pretending she didn't feel anything when something was bothering her. She had become better at it, after that night, when her life changed in the most distorted of ways...so why now she was not being able to control it? "It doesn't bother me." She said, but her voice was barely a whisper, the lack of strength in it a reflection of how blatant the lie was.
Her eyes snapped to Raizel after her last provocative words, Meyra widened her eyes at her cousin in silent threat. If she had happened to be the oldest, she would have pinched Rai's arm because of her impertinent question. "The dance part Rai. That's what it was, just a dance, and a friend saying goodbye to another friend." She replied with irritations wrapped around her tone of voice, feeling a sudden desire to wipe that presumption off her cousin's face.
But then again, as if enchanted by an invisible spell, Meyra could not stop herself from looking back at the dance floor, where she immediately found him again, right as the music softened and a gentle melody began to play. This time, he was no longer entangled in a sea of tulle, chiffon or silk, but instead, he was walking towards her. Her eyes met his, as if he was walking in one of her dreams, out of sight and reach of everyone else, where a storm had suddenly arisen in a field of wild green meadows, as wild as the feelings now beating in rhythm with her heart, a sight that seemed to be beautifully portrayed by the music that had now become no more than background noise.
When he finally got close to her and Rai, Meyra looked mesmerized, even when he decided to turn his attention solely to Rai, Mey couldn't take her eyes off him. Strangely, those unpleasant and terrible feelings that had invaded her while she watched him with other girls no longer affected her while he spoke to her cousin. Instead, Meyra just felt herself being involved in the sound of his voice, in the way his expression seemed so soft and relaxed while in the presence of their mutual friend. It felt right, them three together, it felt right, not as it had felt when he way giving his whole attention to unknown girls with no names.
Dennis said his goodbyes to Rai, and Mey found herself nervously awaiting for the moment he would be addressing her too. But that moment never came...
It happened in the span of a few seconds. In a moment, her heart felt tight, crushing to the point of breaking, in the next second, her eyes met the ground at her feet, as if she had lost the strength to look anywhere else, next...next her breath caught in a breathless gasp as she felt his soft, warm skin caress hers, a whisper of touch that immediately turned her breaking heart into a flame of hope and anticipation. In an unthinking gesture, an impulsive reaction she had no way of anticipating or predicting, her hand searched for his, meeting his touch with her own, her fingers closing lightly around his, before letting him go. Such a brief moment, carried away by the breeze of time, but which left her suspended in unanswered questions, and seemed to have left behind the whisper of a promise. Meyra looked at her friend, all those questions written in her eyes, a silent plea that could not be seen as he did not dare to look at her as he continued on his way to leave the Great Hall.
That beautiful, powerful spell was solely broken, when Mey met another pair of familiar green eyes. Those eyes, had a completely different effect on her. Like a candle that had been rudely blown out, Meyra went from dazed to perfectly aware of her surroundings. First, she felt the familiar annoyance that always accompanied Colin's presence in her life, then... then a soft smile played on her lips when she saw who he was dancing with. A nod towards him, and a playful glint showed in her eyes, before she turn again towards Raizel, "You know...why don't we go outside for a bit? I heard something special would also be happening at the gardens...you want to go there?" She asked lightheartedly.

The Spring Soirée
I smile as I head down to the great hall. My first dance or I mean ball, that I'm going to. I slip in when I notice that I might be little late. I just couldn't choose an outfit then I was fussing over my hair. It took me over an hour to get ready. Mind me I started getting dressed 30 minutes before the ball started.
I look around the great hall. I notice Joseph is dressed up like a chicken. I smile. Then I notice Mikey standing alone against the wall. Eating pastries. I smile to my self as I walk over to him.
"Hey," I say the moment i got to him, "Im surprised to see you here. Whatcha up to? And dont sk me gthat cause im obviously not doing anything."
I smile at him and laugh slightly and then lean against the same wall as him. I look around the ball? Great hall? Whatever we call it right now and notice some other people I know. There is graci and kaitlyn , who I never really talked to but I have a plan of talking to later.
I look back at Mikey and ask him a question. "What shoul we do? Im sooo bored and I know im not exaggerating." I laugh as I remember when we first met. "And dont say lets go fight ghosts either. I dont think thats a option."

The Spring Soirée
The soiree rolled on and Mikey was beginning to grow roots to his comfortable space against the wall a good distance from the revelry. He took another bite of his pastry and saw Lucy Channing waving at him. Returning her good-natured wave with one of her own he was starting to feel more comfortable. Mikey wasn't uncomfortable in crowds, really, he just took a bit of time to warm up to them. He decided he was just fine where he was at the moment and could join the revelry when he was ready.
His eyes scanned the room once more and he saw the girl that he met in detention walking straight towards him. Bree Gray was her name, he remembered noticing that despite his best effort the revelry seemed to be upon him. He enjoyed her company the last time they hung out and hoped to see her again. Maybe this time he will have more confidence and not make a fool of himself.
She said hi when she reached him and asked Mikey what he was up to. She also made it clear that there was no reason to ask her what she was up to because she was not doing anything. Mikey thought that seemed like a fair statement on account of her being right in front of him but decided to keep that thought to himself.
Bree spoke again before Mikey could get a word out. "What should we do? I'm sooo bored and I know I'm not exaggerating." she said and chuckled "And don't say let’s go fight ghosts either. I don't think that's an option."
Mikey couldn't help but laugh. He hoped she didn't think he would make a habit of getting into disagreements with the formerly alive. "Not something I planned for tonight." He said now realizing that when it came to tonight, he actually had no plan. "You know it’s strange, but my plans haven't gone any farther than standing by this wall." Mikey was now feeling a need to make more of the opportunity that the night was offering. It’s not like he got to go to a magic party every day. "Maybe I will ask someone to dance." The words came out of his mouth well before his brain was able to catch up. He scrambled for another thing to say. Something clever and cool but what he said was neither. "Maybe you could ask someone to dance too if you are bored and all."
