Spectator Thread Final Task The Wizarding Schools Potions Championship

This is the spectator thread for the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship
After a busy morning in which all teams had the opportunity to brew their best potions, using all their knowledge and best of skills, professors Melisande Lennox and @Méabh Regan would be waiting for the brave and daring contestants at the Quidditch Stadium. Alongside them was the prestigious and international panel of judges, constituted by Hogwarts' Hjørdis Jensen and Dusana Sabo, Célestine de la Croix-Valmer from Beauxbatons, Évodie Ndoto Masudi of Uagadou and Hugo da Silva[NPC] former Castelobruxo's potions professor and a renown author.

It was mid-autumn and the Scottish highlands would welcome them with gray skies and a very unpleasant cold wind. Meli looked at the heavy clouds forming a dense blanket that threatened to dissolve into raindrops and hoped that wouldn't happen for a while longer. Behind her, the representatives of the various schools participating in the tournament were sitting comfortably, they would be the ones who would evaluate the performance of all the teams and they would be the ones who would decide the winner in the end. Who among them would deserve to walk out of the stadium with a shiny new golden cauldron and bring honor and prestige to their names? Melisande knew that she flinched a little when she saw some of the potions being prepared...now she only could hope for the best!

The Quidditch Stadium was completely renovated and prepared to receive the event. In it, three different sections could be found, each prepared for the challenges corresponding to each age group.

There, in the first third part of the Stadium, a dense forest had blossomed. Tall pines were separated by bushes that hid the ground from anyone looking or trying to cross the forest. Well, unfortunately for the competitors, it would be precisely on the ground that the mischievous little Red Caps would hide! Inside their holes they would wait with their bludgeons until their victims dared to penetrate the dense vegetation.

In the second third of the Stadium was a clearing, where in the centre was a cozy wooden cabin with a glass roof that offered spectators visibility into the humble building. It was a small hut, it only took up space for one internal room. The cabin was surrounded by a group of trees, but the vegetation was not as dense as it looked like in the first third of the stadium. Once inside the cabin, those who would cross the threshold would find themselves surrounded by a dark, cold space provided by by the shade of the surrounding vegetation. The cabin was dimly lit, the only sources of light were three round fireplaces that were almost out and the embers were glowing weakly. The students knew what they would be looking for inside the cabin, so Melisande hoped that they would know what they should be looking for coming from the dying embers. The furthest corners of the hut were silent. For now... But perhaps that was where the brave participants could find what they were looking for?

In the last third of the Stadium, covered by a giant greenhouse dome, there was another forest, but this one had a different flavor, it was a luxurious tropical forest, and instead of tall pine trees, we would find mahogany trees, strangler figs, passionflower flowers, orchids, bromeliads and soursop trees. Scattered on the ground and hanging on the trees were wicker baskets with soursops and...yes you're correct, swooping evils in the mix!

Once the adventurous students entered their challenge field their mission would prove to be quite difficult, of course! To achieve prestige the challenges could not be easy to overcome!

Melisande and Méabh were standing together, making themselves noticed among the seated spectators, as they waited for all the competition participants to arrive at the place where the last part of the Potions Championship would be held. Once all the contestants were present, Meli, with her voice amplified by the Sonorus spell, would finally address everyone present, "Dear students and honorer guests, welcome to the third and final part of the Potions Championship. As you can see, in front of you is not the usual sight that we are used to finding inside our Quidditch Stadium. The organisation of this event took liberties and transformed it into a more suitable setting for this contest.”

“First, inside that lush green forest,” Meli continued pointing with her hand and outstretched arm towards the patch of tall trees, “There is a basket of apples that needs to be retrieved. Unfortunately, it is in the possession and custody of a group of mischievous Red Caps."

“Inside that small wooden cabin,” Meli now pointed towards the clearing in the middle of the Stadium, “There are three or two Ashwinders waiting for giving you a warm welcome to theirs nests. Your goal, is to steal two or three ashwinder eggs without setting the whole place on fire."

“Inside that lush green tropical rainforest,” Meli continued, gesturing now towards the greenhouse containing within a patch of tall trees, colorful and beautiful flowers and dense vegetation,“There are several wicker baskets with soursops. You have to be able to recover a soursop without disturbing the swooping evils that hide among the trees and the fruit baskets."

"You’ll need to use all your courage and wits to succeed in this dangerous mission! Completing your task should be your main goal, but let me remind you that you’ll lose points if you get yourself harmed or any of the Swooping Evils. I hope you’ve done your best and brewed the most outstanding potions!” She merrily ended saying, giving the crowd one of her brightest smiles. It certainly would be entertaining!

“So when you are ready…” She started again, looking at the youngest students with an encouraging nod and smile, “Remember you will only have one hour to finish this challenge, when the time is over so it is your opportunity to succeed. Time starts as soon as you enter your challenge grounds. Time will stop counting when you return."

"Pay attention to your surroundings, remember everything you have learned so far, trust your companions and I’m sure you’ll be victorious! Good luck!” Then she would give them a signal, letting them know that they were free to enter the greenhouse and start their challenge.

Colin! Try not to set yourself on fire mate! I didn't bring any extra shirts, though by the looks of things, Liam can lend you his!" Cursa laughed. A hesitant laugh, but it was the first time he'd felt anything like happy since he'd gotten to Scotland. Both of his cousins had just draped their arms around his shoulders and run with him down to the quidditch stadium, with him in the middle! It was a little --- unsettling? --- at first; but somehow the twins just made him feel welcome. Like. They didn't hate him at all was the vibe he was getting from them both.

Liam laughed too! "Cail! Ye should slather some of that burn paste on all yer shirts --- maybe they won't get all singed!"

"Shutit both of you!" Colin called out to the remaining McCoires as he went down to the pitch to find his girlfriend partner. Liam led Cursa up to the best seats in the stands for seeing all the action. He had to admit, you got a pretty good view up here! He saw that the pitch was divided up into different sectors, one for each of the three age groups. That made sense. Liam had placed them above the second section, so that they could see Colin's group better.

Cursa nodded down towards the competitors. "Say, Colin's girlfriend is really cute. Smart move choosing her as partner! What's her name anyway? I never did find out from Alex and Angus." He turned towards Liam honestly curious to learn more about his cousins. "And what about you? Anyone special in your life Liam?"

Cursa chuckled. Liam blushed. He cleared his throat and bapped Cursa playfully. "Pfft. Alex and Angus are prats mate and no mistake. It's no wonder ye're clueless lad! AngelFyre," he nodded towards Colin's partner; "she's not his girlfriend at all! They've been besties since first year, aye; but it's Clair that's Cailen's girl! Lad's absolutely barking for that lassie!"

Cursa blinked. He had no idea what 'barking' meant in this context. "You mean like, you know? Woof woof?"

Liam regarded Cursa with equal confusion. Then he got it. Liam laughed. "N-No! Barking mate! Like barking mad! He's crazy for Clair! Honestly, I've never seen him but he's gushing about Clair for reason or other! Queer how it worked out. AngelFyre is with a lad named Simon, and he's Clair's bestie. While Cailean is with Clair, and it's AngelFyre who's his bestie."

Hmm. Cursa raised his eyebrow. He didn't quite know what to say. Liam didn't seem to be lying at all. He sat back as the announcer went over the rules and introductions. Neither Colin nor Liam seemed to be anything like Alex and Angus. Those two were always plotting something. Nor did they seem anything like what Alex and Angus had said of them. Or rather: they were, but the younger boys twisted everything around to make them seem worse than they were.

Who to trust? That was the question. Who was making up stories? Was it Alex and Angus? He knew them. They'd been going to Ilvermorny for two and a half years now, living in the same house as him. Or was it Liam and Colin? He didn't know them at all. Hadn't seen them since they were all ten. Cursa shook his head slightly. This was a hard call! But something nagged at the back of his mind: what reason would either Liam or Colin have to lie? Did they even know he was coming? He'd sent a letter last summer and all.

Cursa made a decision. "Say, Liam. I sent a letter to you two last summer saying I'd be coming with Castor and P-Pollux." His voice quavered a little at the mention of his own little brothers. "You --- I never got a response. I---" Okay. Just say it. Straight up. "I thought you two were jerks for ignoring me. But ---"

Liam's expression looked pained. "Cail told me a bit. I hope they catch whoever murdered Pollux. He said Castor was in St Mungos. Cail wants to kill whoever did it." He shook his head, his pale hair shaking about. "I--- I don't what to say about the letter. We never got any post from America? And Ma and Da didn't say anything either! Honestly Cursa, we had no idea any of you would be coming. If we did, well, I'd've been with Cail when --- er --- when everything kind of blew up. I wish I were there anyway. Cailean can be a bit --- um ---"

"Excitable?" Cursa supplied.

Liam smirked. "I was going to say daft, but I'll take excitable too!"

Cursa laughed properly this time! He was really feeling much more comfortable around Liam and Colin as well. Maybe they weren't quite half so bad as he'd been led to believe!

"Ah, there she is."

Casey loped over to the spectator seats when he and Emily finally broke off for the competition. It was natural she and her team would excel in the preceding round. Casey didn't really need to come and cheer for her in the last round when she was as smart as a whip, or even for this round now that he thought about it! But seeing the excitement bounce off each of the participants, Emily's energy in her actions, her buoyant expressions and the overall school spirit about the students made Casey stick around to watch. He quite liked the feel of this energy about Hogwarts, which was a change of pace from the usual. Friends were still a challenge for him to find back at Ilvermorny, not that he was really surprised; people either took his sarcasm and snarky mood or didn't. Warming up to Casey wasn't really a trend people tended to follow. Unless they had patience like Emily did, befriending Casey and trying to figure him out was like trying to solve and getting mad at a Rubix cube over and over, and over, and over again until you threw it at the wall where it would break into pieces, then move on to something else.

Casey slipped past the same redhead from earlier. "'Scuse me, Red. Back again."

He plopped down and he could see her limbering up for the task ahead while she stood one third of the pitch below with another student, the pair of them huddle close as they whispered their master plan to each other. Even though she was far away, Casey could still catch flashes of her enthused face as he watched her. It only proved the unending supply of cheer she had, something that she was trying to indoctrinate Casey on. He was working on that too. He did find himself enjoying the little things a bit more which helped curb his temper. He was starting to participate more in class. Even his sassy comments aren't as mean-spirited anymore... But they're still sassy! Still, he had no idea how Emily did it, being so happy-go-lucky and sweet all the time. Must be a born and bred skill or something because God forbid Casey could amount to her level of happiness and run with it constantly.

He watched Emily sneak into the forest once the task commenced. He smirked as he called out to her. "Nice and easy, Little Miss No-Maj!"

While she briefly vanished into the trees Casey's ear pointed at the discussion nearby. What sounded like shite and giggles over there quickly turned into a note too familiar for Casey to bother to ignore. Was it too much to ask for an afternoon where the Hogsmeade Pyre wasn't brought up in a passing conversation? Casey sighed and figured that it was too soon to let it all go for the time being... Still, his head ached at the mere mention of it and he just got it mended after the bonk he got from the whole ordeal. Judging by what he could hear, Red over there lost someone in the fires. Casey had seen Red once or twice before at Ilvermorny but he was stumped when it came to the faces of whatever family he's on about. That's what happens when you train your eyes to stay glued to the ground as you walk around, keeping to yourself for two years.

Hmm.

No one was immune. Those who didn't die that day would be forced to suffer living through the aftershocks. The latter was clearly what was happening with Red and his buddy. Casey didn't dare want to try and picture Nick in that scenario. Casey felt he grieved enough when he vanished into thin air all that time ago. Had Nick been there and died too, would he still feel the same as he had been all this time? Or would knowing he was actually dead make it worse...?

Thoughts like that were the only times Casey was envious of Emily, being the only child she was. She didn't have to worry about any missing or potentially dead siblings. The most her family woes counted to was her fracturing relationship with her parents.

"Tch... Families..." Casey rubbed his eyes with both hands. Families were so precious. Perhaps that was why it always hurt the most whenever they were threatened with woes like this.

Finally the last challenge was about to begin! Meyra was feeling really excited to see this part of the competition, where the real action was about to start. She loved potions, but she had to admit that seeing others making them was not as fun as doing them herself.

She once again, walked amongst the benches, seeking for a good seat where she could better see Raizel and her teammates. When she reached the middle of the stadium, she sat right behind the redhead she sat with during all the morning challenges. This time he was accompanied by a silver-blonde boy, that she immediately recognised as one of the twins that have been messing around with her and Jun since their first days at Hogwarts. While this one didn't seem to be as noisy as the one who was actually participating in the competition, she wasn't fooled by his less excitable behaviour. Not when he had already, voluntarily, bumped into her and her cousin, making them almost fall a few times.

Through her amber-green eyes, the young Gryffindor scanned the many heads in front of her, searching for her half-cousin and friends. And there she was, getting ready to enter that clearing and the small wooden hut where she and her friends would have to win over several ashwinder creatures. Meyra had never seen an ashwinder in her life, only read vaguely about them, enough to know that they could easily catch fire. And considering the surrounding, it wouldn't be difficult to cause a large fire, she just hoped the professors had their wands ready in case things went into the wrong direction.

She felt like she should try to catch Rai's attention, maybe calling for her or throwing some words of encouragement at her, but with such a crowd around her she realised she would be probably be calling more attention towards her than anything, and she definitely didn't need unnecessary looks on her! So, she remained quiet, just observing her surroundings and trying to locate the creatures amongst all those trees, that would be causing the chaos that everyone was looking to witness. Meanwhile, she couldn't help but overhear the conversation going on in the seats in front of her, between the two older boys. Boys were worse than girls with their gossiping!

Meyra was rolling her eyes at their conversation about who's dating who, when suddenly the tone of that conversation seemed to have turned into a darkest place. She noticed how Cursa's voice changed and slightly trembled when he said one of the names being talked about. But what really pulled her attention was the part where the blonde twin said that Cail wanted to murder someone. What the hell were they talking about? Was he saying this as a metaphor or was he being literal? She took at as if he was not being serious, specially because they both ended up laughing at their last comments about the competitor twin.

"You both seem daft to me..." She muttered to herself, not taking her eyes from the competition field and without paying attention if they had heard her or not.

Potions had been Aurelia Valentine's first love, before Transfiguration. Of course, she thought, Transfiguration is the most fascinating of all, until that fated day in September, and she decided right then that Potions is so difficult that what it did to Aurelia was harbour passion and anticipation for the subject, not animosity or loathing, like other students that found it very much tantalisingly strenuous. The extremity of the focus it requires, the perfection it demands; if one does not find the process compelling and beguiling, then they must not have understood the satisfaction that perfection provides.

Although the Championship had been posted long ago in the Entrance Hall along with the never-ending Educational Decrees on the bulletin board, Aurelia did not have the strength to join. The prospect of having to ask someone to be her partner actually would kill her in the process, figuratively speaking. Social anxiety is a crippling feat she had no mental energy to fight head-on anytime soon. Thus, here she was, after prioritising her assigned readings that day, she went out of the castle upon reading the announcement that the finals of the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship are going to be held in Hogwarts' Quidditch Stadium. Blending in with the stream of students who are most definitely there to either cheer on with their participating friends, watch because the tasks are inherently dangerous, or search for some eye candy to fancy on, the young badger ambulated straight into one of the pires to watch the championship.

Aurelia even bothered to buy a plain pair of binoculars for this one, as observing that the spectator stands are taller than most trees; in order to watch the final task, one requires to be overhead with a trusty pair of binoculars. Omnioculars are incredible inventions, of course; however, she is not that rich in galleons, and besides, the match is not Quidditch, where events happen in a blink of an eye.

It's very much astounding how students from other wizarding schools visited Hogwarts for this championship. Well, of course, other participants came from their respective schools too. However, seeing them up close, socialising with Hogwarts students with smiles on their faces, made her feel very much alienated from her very own school. It's October, and it's inconceivable to think that she had not made any friends yet. It's a preference, most definitely, but seeing them chattering amongst themselves, waving whatever flags with imprinted logos of whatever school they have come from estranged her from the social pyramid. No use crying over spilt potions now, as the autumn wind breezed through them like a caress in this otherwise greyish and solemn weather.

The young Hufflepuff witch sported a green turtleneck sweater and thick pants, a knitted bonnet protecting her unwiry curls from the unforgiving autumn breeze. The binoculars are dangled around her neck, her leather satchel slung over her shoulder. Just like she always does in class, she graciously seated herself up front in the spectator stands, ignoring the cheers and jeers from the students around her as soon as Professor Lennox's resounding voice echoed around the stadium. Wheeling the binoculars into focus with her thumb, she observed the pires where the professors were commentating for the finals; she recognised Professor Regan and Professor Lennox, of course, and other people she was unfamiliar with, donning expensive-looking and regal robes. Her eyebrows knitted together, she still couldn't identify the logo attached to the robes in one of them; she figured that it was a professor from another wizarding school.

The History of Magic Professor continued on to explain the tasks the participants had to persevere— and how Aurelia wished she could push down balls of yarns down to the throats of the students continuously screaming and cheering with their agonising, grating voices. Even with a charm helping Professor Lennox's voice to amplify, she could not even win against these screeching spawns of Banshees. Clucking her tongue in extreme irritation, Aurelia attempted to read the professor's lips before focusing the aim of the binoculars on the Quidditch Stadium instead.

A lush forest, a wooden cabin, and a tropical rainforest. In the middle of the Quidditch Stadium. Aurelia visibly gasped, both ends of her lips tilted slightly in something akin to an impressed smile. Magic: powerful enough to achieve environmental manipulation. Then she realised—this is something one can acquire, one can learn, one she can obtain in her bare hands. Squealing happily, Aurelia pushed a student beside her in a pretence of stretching before opening her leather satchel to withdraw her copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to do research about Red Caps, where it is mentioned that it is going to be part of the obstacle the participants will have to face. “Red Caps, Red Caps... There it is!” Trying to repel the surrounding noise that drills irritatingly in her head, she read a passage. Red Caps were normally around three or four feet tall, with red eyes and long, sharp nails. They were most often found in northern Europe. They attacked those who were lost, and though they were extremely dangerous to lone Muggles, a wizard or witch could easily repel them with charms and hexes. They could also be repelled by dousing them in Beautification Potion, as their temporary "beautiful" appearance was repulsive to them... Well,” the young badger left the textbook open on her lap as she used her binoculars to observe the participants.

“They sure didn't brew any Beautification Potion.” She whispered distractedly, her deep brown eyes scouring the faces of the participants. They looked nervous, excited, and all the contradicting expressions known to man; however, they are blank to her, as some of them are unfamiliar and some of them are evidently foreign students, and it's most impossible to have met them before. Until her aim moved towards a particular first-year with pink hair, which heavily reminded Aurelia of the candy floss she always bought back in Croydon, sporting a ridiculously bright yellow hoodie that totally brightens his bluish eyes. Just like everyone else, he looks rather pale, perhaps from the trepidation the competition provides, but he looks calm enough... And compared to everyone else, he is the most ridiculously looking person Aurelia had ever seen in her own entire life.

Her face immediately contorted into evident confusion and clear distaste. Everyone had been decent enough to don regal student robes that represented their respective schools, and here he was casually attired like they were only just about to walk around the outskirts of London, uselessly commenting about the solemn weather or how something rubbish happened in the... Tube. That's how casual he looks—and come to think of it, how can Aurelia mistake that person for anyone else? She recognised him as a first-year because she subconsciously remembered that he was also a Hufflepuff. For a task that requires a lot of sneaking, he sure stands out like a lively sunflower in a group of wilted daisies. The young badger let out a huff as she watched the candyfloss-coloured, for a hair boy with extreme focus, assessing his predicament. Unlike the other participants, who are crowded together like an army of frogs, perhaps exchanging battle plans, this boy just menacingly stares at his partner like it was all a romance telenovela cringeworthy of mention.

“What are you doing? You're not only representing Hogwarts; you're representing the Hufflepuff House too,” Aurelia whispered to herself, with an urging tone as though he could hear her, thumbing the focusing wheel to focus on the young wizard's lips, intending to read it as soon as he spoke. Distracted by the chattering around her, she couldn't pick up anything except the word ninja. Now, how should one associate that word in the task at hand? Sneaking, of course. He seems just like the type to brag about his skills; he must be glorifying his ninja skills as if he isn't dressed like a clown in a funfair. He sure does have lovely hair, though... She noticed as soon as the autumn wind whipped past them again and his gentle pink hair swayed in the slightest. Hmm.

His attire actually is kind of telling the personality he most likely exudes. He seems casual, as stated long ago, of course, not laid-back but rather flashy, and it borders a kind of, perhaps, a little bit of a braggart. Aurelia smiled slightly. If she was right that the word ninja came out of his lips, he most probably is theatrical, cartoonish, or encompasses the exact concept of exaggeration and most likely styled himself as one. His pink candy floss hair looked healthy and taken care of, which really is telling how much he cared for his appearance. After noting that down, the young badger imagined him as someone who really had a boyish and jester kind of a smile. Too bad she couldn't see it, as the young wizard looked like he was about to meet his perilous death in the makeshift lush forest.

Things are not looking up for them, it seems. They must've brewed the most useless potions in the system and most probably would not be their crutch to win the competition. The young wizard looked down at the potion vials in his hands with an expression so solemn that it could rival the autumn weather overhead. The Final Task is dangerous, of course, but the professors spectating the championship would not let a student lose a limb for that, right? He sure looked like the world was about to end. It's commendable, that this very expression was derived from the desire to be victorious and appear glorious in the end—or perhaps it was also derived from the slight desire of self-preservation. Aurelia put down her pair of binoculars to read further the passage about Red Caps. First obstacle, and it sounded violent and dangerous already, and she had no idea about Ashwinders and Swooping Evils too, for that matter.

“Nothing you can't overcome, surely,” Aurelia whispered to herself once again, drowned by the chattering, peeking in her pair of binoculars as though a Peeping Tom. “No one joins a competition unprepared, of course. Well, if one thinks about it, no one would have thought that magical creatures can be associated in these type of competitions. They sure are creative for this; the ingredients required are harvested through dangerous means. However, isn't that what it is in the world of potion-making though—” she cleared her throat with a cough as soon as she noticed that she was monologuing; also, in the slightest, sounding like she was supporting him. Now, who would support him? Not her; surely flock of girls are already revelling over his candyfloss-like hair. He looked popular—with the hair like that, actually, who wouldn't be popular?

“Merlin,” Aurelia managed to choke out as soon as the Hufflepuff boy hunched down to eventually sneak in the makeshift forest, as though she was the one that was about to sneak in and attempt to fool the Red Caps. Her heart pumped into an irregular beat as she moved her binoculars away from her eyes as if to prevent herself from seeing the inevitable, her fingers also crossed. No, she can't be rooting for that boy now—she berated herself, her knee jumping repeatedly, showcasing her anxiousness. Curiosity piqued, Aurelia peeked in her pair of binoculars again, her thumb already wheeling the focus wheel to attempt to see clearly inside the otherwise dark expanse of the makeshift forest.

“Whoops- sorry!”
Novalie squeezed herself through the packed spectator stands of the Quidditch stadium, dodging elbows and apologizing to the occasional angry students. She was a tiny bit late - but for a good reason! Just moments ago, she'd been struggling to decide what to take with her to make it absolutely clear who she was cheering for. Unfortunately, the girl didn’t own any pompoms for cool stunts, but she had come prepared with an arsenal of cheerleading chants guaranteed to make Oliver feel cherished.
What she also had was a ridiculously large leprechaun hat perched on top of her head. It wasn’t hers, of course. However, it had been randomly sitting on a table in the Ravenclaw common room - abandoned... forgotten. Very weird situation. However, when Novalie noticed that it was conveniently just as green as Slytherin (the house Ollie was in), she knew it was fate. Without a second thought - or a single concern that someone might have simply put it down for a moment -, the redhead had snatched it up and brought it with her to the Potion Championships.

Navigating the crowd turned out to be tough. It took determination, quick reflexes, and, apparently, stepping on a few feet. Every so often, she’d hear a'Watch where you're going' or an 'Ouch!' - but hey, these things happened. Surely, they’d understand, right? She was in a hurry, after all! Oliver needed to know the Ravenclaw had been here from the very beginning!
Finally spotting an open space, she squeezed in, unknowingly stomping on someone’s toes (@Meyra Lancaster) in the process yet again. Settling beside a girl she had never met - or so she thought - Novalie flashed her a bright grin.
“Gosh, who would have thought so many people cared this much about potions?”, she chuckled, already scanning the stadium for a familiar face, “I know I don’t, but my best friend is competing, so I want to support him.”

Just then, her eyes landedon Evpraksiya (@Evpraksiya Vinogradova) - probably the most graceful Veela human being Novalie had ever met. It was only natural she would be here. Considering how often the two of them had partnered up in Potions class, Novalie had long since realized just how effortlessly skilled Evpraksiya was at the subject. Ingredients, brewing steps, potion properties - she seemed to have everything memorized down to the last detail as if she had read all the potion books before going to bed. Honestly, if it weren’t for her, Novalie wasn’t even sure she’d have passed their regular lessons. But that’s what friends were for, right?

Before Novalie could call out to her, another familiar figure caught her eye.
“Oh look, there’s Zach!” (@Zach Zaphiere), the redhead gasped, grabbing the girl beside her by the shoulder and giving her an excited shake, “I didn’t know demons were allowed to participate! That’s gotta be cheating, right? I mean, dark magic and all?”
She paused, considering it.
“Although... I guess we all use magic, so maybe it evens out.”

Still, none of them were who she was actually looking for. Her eyes darted across the contestants until - ah, there!
Without a second of hesitation, she took a deep breath-
OLLIE!! (@Oliver Armani)
Her voice came out so loud it hurt her throat a little but now was not the time to worry about that. She waved both hands wildly.
“I CAME TO CHEER FOR YOU, OLLIE! YOU’RE THE BEST, OLLIE! I BELIEVE IN YOU!”
Her gaze flickered to a familiar streak of pink standing beside her best friend. Wait - was that..?
“MAMA?!” (@Mamori Anezaki)
They were friends?! Sick.
The Metamorphmagus cupped her hands around her mouth like a makeshift megaphone,
“I CHEER FOR YOU TOO, MAMA!”

Now was the perfect moment before the contestants entered the first forest! Fueled by pure enthusiasm, Novalie started dancing. Well, if one could even call it dancing, considering the cramped space. It was more like an aggressive series of bouncing exercises.
Still, she belted out her cheer,
"Give me an O, give me an M!
Ollie and Mama - better than them?!
No way, no how, not today!
They're the champs, so clear the wa- heugh-!"

Her voice abruptly cut off as she started coughing, her throat officially protesting all the shouting.
“Oh damn..”, the Ravenclaw wheezed, trying to pull herself together.
She turned to the girl beside her - casually coughing in her direction - and asked,
“Why aren’t you cheering for someone, anyway?”

Dennis Tumberton finally made it into the stadium. You would think it was the World Cup with how excited all the houses and schools were behaving. Dennis didn’t have any friends competing this year but he was a sucker for spectacle. As he climbed to the top of the bleachers, above all the noise, to get a better view of where he might sit, he saw his History of Magic teacher, Melisandre Lennox, at the podium explaining the rules.

“Go back to your ghosts!” Dennis yelled, his voice lost in the cacophony of other students. He grinned though, if there was one teacher who was bound to hear him it was this teacher; she always seemed to have the hearing of a bat - even if she was busy with her other tasks and couldn’t respond. “Your music sucks!”

“Swooping evil? Is that what they called you when you were a student?” Sick burn, Dennis, sick burn. He wasn’t even sure what he meant by that! He was saving his best for last though. As she was winding down and getting ready to start the game. He yelled, “Put some more make up on I can still see your wrinkles!” Got her!

Now to find a place to sit. By this point after the beginning announcements, the rows were filled. He walked along the top until he was in a different section, away from the surrounding glares he received from harassing Ms. Lennox. It was in the following section that he looked further down and found an empty spot. Perfect. He walked down the bleachers, said his ‘excuse me’s and ‘sorry’s as he crossed over people already seated, occasionally stepping on toes.

He plopped himself happily down beside two girls a Gryffindor and Ravenclaw , and clapped with the rest as the teams came out. “Let’s take out those Red Caps! Light them up!” Dennis yelled excitedly, obviously he didn’t hear all the rules as he was hurling insults. He leaned over to the girls and said, “Look at these stages! They really went all out for the final round, huh? I wonder which potion they are going to make!”

Scuse me, Red. Back again." Cursa observed the younger Ilvermorny boy, who sat down with him and Liam. He was looking for someone down in the huge area of the quidditch field. "Nice and easy, Little Miss No-Maj!" he shouted out. Cursa smirked. Liam gave him a funny look. Cursa wondered which competitor 'Little Miss No-Maj' was!

"Oh! What do you call them here? Muffles? Muddles?"

"Oh! Muggleborns!" Cursa repeated the term quietly. They had such weird words in England! "Yeah. Our Cailean is really quite worked up over what happened. Something about rotten mushrooms and weird potions?"

"I just thought it manky French food, to be honest."

"Hmm." Liam lowered his voice. "Cail might be daft, but, you know ---" he made little wolfy fingers at the sides of his head "--- pretty good sense of smell, right? Like. He's been on about this crazy potion that's got rotten smelling mushrooms in it. Showed me the recipe and all!"

"Wait. Alex and Angus mentioned something about Colin eating deadly mushrooms. They said it was no wonder he's so loony!" The two boys leaned towards one another so they could talk at a lower volume. Cursa was actually pretty excited! It was amazing how Liam was just talking with him as if they'd known each other for ever and had only seen each other last week! Somehow, it just felt natural to him. "And he was all on about mushrooms when we were searching for Castor too!"

"Aye. He's lunar and no mistake! Anyway, I think it was last year, or the year before. That was the year of the mushroom attack!"

"Mushroom attack!?"

"Mhm! Professors and even a bunch of kids went out into the Forbidden Forest ---" Liam nodded towards the dark trees well beyond the stadium. "--- they were out there for hours trying to clear this infestation of mushrooms out. I never did hear if they cut them all out or not. But anyway, one boy ate the mushrooms and almost died! Cail ate some and, well, let's just say he was as sick as a dog for some time!"

Cursa laughed. "But what about the potion?"

"Oh! That!" Liam shook his head. "Sometimes I really worry about Cail. I didn't try the potion myself. Not after seeing what it did to Cailean. Apparently you need these mushrooms, and someone's bone and some cursed blood." Liam shook his head. "Cailean says he has the recipe, but hasn't had any luck making the stuff yet. Frankly, that's a good thing. He ends up in hospital after most Potions labs! I fear he'll end up dead if he actually succeeds making this stuff. Anyway, if you think Cail is excitable without the potion, you've seen nothing until he's been into that stuff! Laddie's bonkers, and off the walls!"

"No kidding?"

"No kidding! One time, I had to chase him all the way down to the lake! It was freezing out, and he was all but naked, broom surfing over the lake. Honestly Cursa, I was scared! He howled and jumped off the broom right into the icy water! Mind you, we both love a good winter dip in a lake, but. At night? In a snow storm?" Liam shook his head.

"How did he get the stuff anyway? I hate to say, but Alex and Angus told us a story of him stealing stuff."

"Pfft! Cail would no more steal aught than I would make a joke about Uranus!" Cursa nodded soberly. He was really vibing with Liam. "But! He found this dusty old random bottle in the Room of Requirement --- that's pretty much a jumble room full of old stuff --- he said it had his name on it, so he took the bottle and drank a little."

"Liam. Well, fuck me. I would never drink anything out a bottle I found around school, even if it had my name on it and a gilt invitation!"

"Right!? Daft lad!"

Cursa smirked.

Liam smirked.

Liam made a fist and offered it to Cursa.

Cursa made a fist and gave Liam's a side bump!

"RAVENCLAW!"

"HORNED SERPENT!"

The two boys laughed. Cursa wondered about Colin. He watched idly as Colin and AngelFyre began the last task. Kids were running in all directions. Then it started to rain over one of the cabins. Cursa was pretty sure it was Colin and AngelFyre's. Maybe some fire protection? With Colin's potion brewing skills, anything could happen!

❛❛ MAMORI ANEZAKI WORKS AS A NINJA
AS HIS SIDELINE JOB ❜❜

??????
Mamori Anezaki is his name, Aurelia figured, as soon as Professor Regan introduced their group, representing Hogwarts. How did she know? A weird name for a rather weird guy, as the name Mamori Anezaki sounds like a person who would be very flashy. It is easier to conclude his participation in this said championship, as being inherently conspicuous—especially with his gentle pink hair, bright yellow canary hoodie, and such pale skin—is not something one should look like in a particular hide-and-seek game. He could have worn, at least, a cloak, even if it was not perfectly ideal at best in the forest, as the fabric could be snagged by small and low branches; however, the shadows of the long and tall trees could work, at most, to his advantage.

All in all, Mamori Anezaki, Aurelia initially thought, will meet his perilous death right here.

“Anezaki is going to die—Red Caps will tear him to bits and pieces!” The young badger could not help but exclaim in extreme frustration, her face crumpled as her thumb wheeled the focusing part of her pair of binoculars. The young Hufflepuff inevitably stands out in the makeshift lush forest; the long and tall trees are already obscuring the streams of light the day provides, and one could almost not see the forest floor. However, Mamori can be seen between the shadows, slow and steady, his entirety sticking out. Aurelia temporarily moved her view of him to observe his surroundings, and it did not even take long for her to find the Red Caps' hideout, a somewhat small cave in between trees, a cast of long shadow within the forest floor.

“In front of you, look at where you're going!” Forgetting herself, she somehow forgot that she was kind of jealous of his candyfloss-like hair and now inherently sounded like she was bolstering for him. Her irritation with the overwhelming screams and shouts from students all around her, the frantic wave of their flags and banners, has been long forgotten; now she felt like she was commandeering Mamori Anezaki like he was some sort of her chessman. Although Mamori Anezaki needs no more useless insistency from the badger now unknowingly cheering for him in the spectator stands, for it is crystal clear that he already spotted which cave housed Red Caps, with their stupid red headbands and their wretched-looking bones as a club.

As soon as Professor Regan commented about Mamori's sneakiness, Aurelia realised it first as her mouth was agape, her thumb already abusing the focus wheel part of her binoculars. The Red Caps did not see him at all. “WHAT?!” The young badger exclaimed, her high-pitched voice filled with utter disbelief immediately drowning the cheers. “They should get their eyes checked—THEY ARE CLEARLY COLOURBLIND!” With his pink hair and his bright yellow choice of clothing, one would think he is more discernible and prominent than the sun itself! They also do not have stupid red headbands and wretched-looking bones in hand; they are also inherently stupid if one should think about it. This works in Mamori's favour!

Aurelia Margaret Valentine could not possibly sit still. She wanted to stand up and walk back and forth as she watched, her brilliant mind tirelessly working, her hands on her back similar to a widowed muggle detective with a murder case he could not crack. The young badger wants to bark orders, to run out there and help. Oh, how she wished she joined this darned Potions Championship instead, albeit the fact that she would probably crumble from extreme pressure and fear, as her mind tends to conjure blankness whenever in a state of panic. That is why the extreme calmness Mamori Anezaki exudes in this situation is impressive enough to mention, something Aurelia admires about his character. Slightly.

Mamori lifted his arm to throw something in the makeshift cave; his accuracy served his purpose as that something went straight inside. Everything had been incredibly fast; Aurelia did not catch what it was even using her binoculars. Should have bought a pair of Omnioculars instead; however, she was planning to order a textbook from Flourish & Blotts through owl delivery, and additionally, she was also subscribed to multiple publications such as Daily Prophet, Witch Weekly, Perusing Potion-Making, Astronomy at Present, Transfiguration Today, and Enchantments Magazine. They are all collectively expensive just so Aurelia would not appear outdated. She did not find Omnioculars as something convenient to buy, as she doesn't initially watch Quidditch and finds the sport rather overrated. Perhaps because she has a fear of heights and could not properly fly on a broom to save her sorry and pathetic life without being petrified in fear of eventually falling off.

Upon Professor Regan's comment that Mamori chucked a whole vial of Muffling Draught in the said cave, Aurelia was quick like a bolt of lightning to retrieve her copy of Magical Drafts and Potions from her bulging leather satchel to reaffirm her memory—that the stupid potion only mutes the victim—and there it is. Fingering the excerpt with her index finger, the young badger mumbled the description.
Muffling Draught
Those who inhale its fumes become unable to speak.
Horrified, she snapped her book shut before exclaiming, “How is that going to help?!” And sure enough, the fumes caught the attention of the beasts lurking in the said cave, charging out with the bones of their victims as their prominent weapon. They are impressively bonkers too, as one of them bears the basket of red apples that is required to steal in order to finish the wretched task.

Aurelia let out a quivering sigh, thumbing the focus wheel again to watch Mamori Anezaki once more. He was crouched in a bush, which, in her opinion, is a terrible place to hide. Nonetheless, as the Greek Goddess of Luck, Tyche, must have favoured him today for the time being, as the Red Caps did not spot him for the second time. “WHAT?! WHAT?!” The young badger repeated, now standing up and throwing herself against the wooden guard rail of the spectator stands, her pair of binoculars very much pressing on her eyes as though it will assist her to see the situation better. For the love of Helga Hufflepuff and her food-related spellcraft, Mamori Anezaki really does have exemplary ninja skills.

Her heart jumped out of her chest as soon as Mamori raised his hands, half-expecting the Red Caps to see it too. It is mental to think about that that gesture had gone unnoticed too, as the Hufflepuff pointed at the said beasts before pointing at his lips. The young badger abused the focus wheel of her binoculars again, just to read what he was saying.

They're here. Stick to the plan.

And that's when she realised that Mamori is throwing himself out there as a form of a decoy, and the fact that Oliver Armani is nowhere to be found is because he was entrusted to steal the basket of red apples. Her heartbeat had become quicker upon the Eureka, intensely enough that the front nerves of her forehead started throbbing too. She is frustrated beyond words. He is not just a ninja; he is also really reckless with his life too. Her deep brown eyes scoured the surroundings and had failed to spot Armani for the life of her, much to her mounting exasperation.

Aurelia concluded right then that Mamori Anezaki might meet his perilous death in that makeshift lush forest.

Meyra adjusted her beanie and pulled her scarf closer to her neck to keep the chilly breeze from seeping through the collar of her coat and sweater. It was a really unpleasant afternoon, and it was one of the rare occasions when the young girl felt grateful to be in the middle of a crowd. Even with all the commotion that could be heard around her almost deafening her heightened senses. One thing she often did to help tone down the cacophony was to try to focus on conversations and sounds closer by, so that she could ignore the rest to the point where everything else just became background noise. It was the voice of a boy sitting next to Cursa that caught her attention and helped to be the first guiding thread that kept her focused. "Tch... Families...", she heard him say, and she could have not agreed more with his statement.

But her attempt to keep her attention away from the whole ruckus was suddenly and rudely shattered when she felt a stomp in her toes that nearly made her cry. "AaH! Fuuu..." She almost let a curse word escape her lips as she grimaced and closed her eyes tightly, her expression pained. When the pain eased, with a murderous look she looked up, towards the culprit. It was a red-haired girl that she had only seen during their shared classes. Meyra wanted to comeback at her, but with a second thought she decided to not cause an unnecessary fuss, understanding that it was something to be expected to happen with so many people crowded into such a tight space.

So she let the girl sit beside her, sending her a small, greeting smile before turning her eyes again towards the competitors, specifically towards her cousin and her teammates. She saw as they finally started to enter the clearing and she felt a sudden weight, tightening on her stomach. She felt nervous, worrying if she would be witnessing Raizel getting injured without being able to help, hoping that she would end up seeing her friend getting out of there with a shiny new golden cauldron.

“Gosh, who would have thought so many people cared this much about potions?” She heard the redhead at her side say and turned to meet her cheerful face. “What do you mean? Potions are a very nice subject!” Meyra replied with a smile of her own, before giving her full attention again towards the stadium field. But she didn't have much time to analyze the scenario that was unfolding in the competition, as the girl didn't take long to force her to once more divert her attention to her, this time, grabbing her by the shoulder and shaking her enthusiastically. “Yeah, I was already looking at him and his team! He is on my cousins team see?” Meyra replied feeling slightly irritated by the girl’s over excitement, but still, she pointed at the brown-haired Gryffindor girl next to Zach, "That one? Raizel Voltrouz. She's awesome, I hope she will win this!"

An expression of concern mixed with surprise showed on her face when the girl called Zach a demon. Why would she be calling one of Raizel's best friends a demon? Meyra was about to ask the reasons why she had made such comment about him but the redhead didn't give her a chance to speak before she started to yell another student's name. Mey's ears rang painfully as the girl's voice violently and mercilessly penetrated her hearing. She quickly raised her hands to cover her ears, to shield her from the other girl's high-pitched voice.

Soon after, Meyra felt herself being shaken and pushed again, when the other girl decided to start making some movements, which Mey thought was an attempt at a very awkward dance. As if that wasn't enough she decided to start...singing? Meyra sighed, rubbing her face with her hand, thinking about how unlucky she was to be the one the redhead had chosen to sit next to, when there were hundreds of options to choose from. Her feeling of frustration worsened even more when the Ravenclaw started coughing... yes, coughing!! Up in her face! "Are you serious right now?" Meyra protested with piercing gaze, covering her mouth and nose with one of her hands and waving the other in front of her to clean the air between them. "I am here supporting my cousin, but I will not be screaming like a hoarse hen!" She responded by shooting the girl a sharp look, crossing her arms over her chest, and turning her attention back to Raizel and her team.

“Let’s take out those Red Caps! Light them up!” Came a voice from the boy who was on the other side of her on the benches. Apparently she had a weird magnet for red-hair Ravenclaws. And weren't they supposed to be the smart ones? “Look at these stages! They really went all out for the final round, huh? I wonder which potion they are going to make!” he continued. Meyra narrowed her green eyes at him, trying to understand if he was joking or speaking seriously. "You know they are not going to brew anything right? That was the morning task?" Meyra asked with a faint smile.

Meanwhile, the conversation between the white-haired twin and the American boy continued to happen at the bench in front of her. Now, the eldest Ravenclaw was commenting something about a strange and suspicious mushroom potion that Colin had prepared and drunk? And it made him fly naked on his broom? And the mushrooms were attacking at the Forbidden Forest? With...someone's bones and cursed...blood? The hell was all that about? A joke about Uranus... "Boys are really weird!" Meyra thought rolling her eyes.
