Christmas. Is it normal to not feel the festive cheer usual during Christmas? Aurelia Valentine ignored the excited invitations of the prefects about a Christmas Feast being held in the Great Hall today for dinner. Students around her squealed though, making her avert her direction from the ancient double doors of the Great Hall and now ambulating towards the Transfiguration Courtyard. Her winter boots made a crunching sound as snow crumbled beneath her feet. Huffing a little from the cold, Aurelia securely wrapped her Hufflepuff scarf around her neck before brushing away the snow that collected over the snow bench and sat there tentatively.

This is the coldest Christmas ever, Aurelia thought, her gloved hands distractedly tracing shapes on the snow. Of course, the Hufflepuff witch stayed over the holidays. Her first Christmas that she celebrated without her mother, who insisted she stay over as they couldn't celebrate it together anyway because of her demanding work. She didn't know writing jobs are rigorous like that to the point she couldn't even celebrate stupid Christmas with her mother. Hello? Aurelia huffed exasperatedly, her breath visible in the chilly air. It stopped snowing, thankfully. Perhaps the heavens are commemorating the celebrations together too, and Aurelia is the only one pathetic today.

What happened today? Well, Aurelia received another book from her mother as a gift. Her long-awaited Secret History, by Donna Tartt. Donna Tartt had become her favourite author after reading her other book, The Little Friend. Reviewers had expressed their adoration towards Secret History that Aurelia initially squealed and jumped around her bed when she received the book for Christmas; it mellowed her grouchy feelings she was harbouring towards her mother that she wrote a letter and packed multiple boxes of chocolate frogs for her inexpressive mother. She was easily patronised in terms of books that she forgot her sadness and homesickness altogether for the entirety of Christmas Day. Until now, of course, where other students who stayed over the holidays like her are now gallivanting themselves in the Christmas Feast, commemorating Christmas with their friends.

One sullen goblin approached her, scowling as he waddled and handing her a Santa hat. Aurelia stared at the goblin incredulously, her mouth slightly agape as it was her first time seeing a goblin. When the goblin was unmoved and kept insisting on the hat, Aurelia took it from his long fingers and wore it over her tousled curly hair. “I don't even believe in Christmas,” the Hufflepuff witch blurted out so suddenly that the goblin only snorted insultingly at her. She did not mean to say that. Ugh, stupid arse mouth.

“Well, I'm just doing my job, kid.” The goblin snorted as he ambulated back in the direction of the Entrance Hall. Now that Aurelia was snapped out from of amazement, she noticed that the waddling goblin was wearing an entire Santa costume. Creasing an eyebrow, Aurelia stood up from her stone bench.

“So you're getting paid, then? That's nice!” Aurelia managed to declare after, a puff of chilly fog appeared from her breath. The goblin ignored her and eventually entered the Entrance Hall, waving a long hand. Aurelia was relieved to know that the goblin is getting paid; the Hufflepuff witch had been sympathetic about them ever since she learnt about Goblin Rebellions from History of Magic. Making the most of the goblin’s work, even waddling out here in the cold to give her a Santa Hat, Aurelia put it on securely, pinning it with her olive green barrettes. Merlin knows her messy, thick curls reject any head accessories.

After standing in the middle of the Transfiguration Courtyard stupidly, Aurelia looked up at the skies. She had read from the Astronomy at Present newsletter that it is advised to stargaze during winter nights, especially when the Geminids Meteor Shower will be visible during Christmastime. It's a bummer that Aurelia does not own a telescope, and telescopes in the Astronomy Tower can only be used if a professor is present and/or permitted by Professor Starwise himself. It's also unfortunate where the Hufflepuffs are housing in the First Floor when Gryffindors and Ravenclaws have their own actual turrets. They can stargaze all they want. Is that favouritism from the castle itself? First floor is better than the dungeons, though—in Aurelia's honest opinion—where Slytherins resided. She had read from Hogwarts: A History that it is abnormally cold in the Basements and the Dungeons during winter. The extreme cold gives Aurelia severe headaches, and yet she doesn't wear knitted caps she purposefully packed for that exact reason. Again, her hair rejects that type of clothing.

The Astronomy Tower, of course. Isn't it off-limits, though? One way to find out. Aurelia looked around first, her hair whipping from the cold that she shivered involuntarily. She can still hear the carols in the Great Hall, the laughter, and the clinking of goblets from out here in the Transfiguration Courtyard. The seasonal cheer inhibiting the Great Hall right now because of the Christmas Feast did not extend to Aurelia, might as well do something worthwhile. Like stargazing, and reading the Astronomy at Present holiday issue newsletter to assess the skies with. The last day for Geminids Meteor Shower to be visible, it says. The Hufflepuff witch had been sceptical about this newsletter ever since she subscribed at the publication months ago. However, better be misinformed than ask her mother to subscribe to an actual muggle Astronomy-rated newsletter and deliver it in owl post every day for her. She's still tetchy about the whole stay over the holidays because I'm working even during Christmas issue. Aurelia Valentine is a prideful kid, thanks to her prideful mother too. That is not something to be proud of, of course. Especially her single mother's questionable parenting skills.

Approaching the grounds, Aurelia watched with a satisfied look in her pale face as the snow crumbled beneath her winter boots and made a crunching sound. It's more chilly out here too, every breath visible in the air, and the wintry wind is whipping unforgivably. Her nose is slightly pinkish from attempting to adapt to the cold. Tucking her rebellious curls behind her ears to no avail, Aurelia trudged down the snowy path towards the separated Astronomy Tower. Pocketing her mittened hands, she stopped at the entrance of the Astronomy Tower, where it clearly stated off-limits, stretching it with ropes as well as a wooden sign on the large wooden door. Does she really need to break in the Astronomy Tower during Christmas just to stargaze and hopefully get a glimpse of the Geminids Meteor Shower tonight?

𝕽uth Fairchild patted her stomach, sighing contentedly to herself. The Christmas Feast filled her up more than the stuffed turkey on one of the tables of the Great Hall, one of the many delicious dishes the girl had gotten her hands on. Boy, Ruth felt like she was about to burst. Perhaps she shouldn’t have so much as wiped through all four courses, taking a bite out of everything. However, the girl couldn’t help herself. Christmas had never been as crowded or as joyous. The Fairchilds didn’t invite anyone over, leaving only the eight of them having Christmas dinner together.

It wasn’t that it wasn’t lovely. It was simply the fact that the family dinner didn’t consist of grandparents, cousins, uncles, aunts. Friends, even. No friends invited. Memorable dinners, but there was no reason to cook for more than what they could eat, resulting in Ruth always seemingly eating a restricted portion (mind you, her appetite increases and her stomach may as well be a void for Christmas dinners). Here, though, it was a buffet of food. So, so many food. The elves had done well, cooking up a meal that satisfied all of the students and professors staying at Hogwarts for the holidays.

At least, Ruth assumed it was all. She hadn’t been keeping track who had gone or left the school, besides the prefects. Pam and Ira, for instance, had gone home, making her slightly glum and less accompanied (more disappointed that Pam had gone home, of course. Ira can do as she pleases). She had barely seen Gemini or Mamori either, though Aurelia was constantly darting about. Ruth wasn’t sure where. She often found herself presuming her Hufflepuff acquaintance had somewhere educational to be, nothing regarding W.H.I.P. If it was, wouldn’t she have been informed?

Ruth couldn’t remember seeing Aurelia at the feast. Then again, she was busy eating her life out…so much, she almost forgot about today’s trip to restricted town. Ruth grinned at the recent memory, fresh like wet paint. She could still remember the taste of all those Honeyduke treats she got to try with Jan. What a memorable day. Such a fantastic Christmas.

…After the feeling of nausea goes away. She clutched at her stomach. Regret, regret, regret. Why had she eaten so much?! Ruth groaned, her legs beginning to move further away from the Great Hall (bursting of festivities) and towards the staircases. She couldn’t comprehend where she was going. If she got herself walking, maybe she’d be able to rid the suddenly uncomfortable full feeling she gets whenever she eats to her heart’s content.

Hogwarts was brimming in steps. It was bound to happen eventually.

She certainly couldn’t head towards the dormitories. It wasn’t much of a walk away from the Great Hall, having only been a floor up from the dining and assembly centre. Maybe somewhere else, somewhere further away, higher. Ruth grinned as a thought drifted into her mind. She knew just the place.

As Ruth walked up the steps of the Astronomy Tower, she remembered how desperately she had wanted to go up the to watch the stars in the middle of the night. That was how she got to meet Avis twice, and Achelous. Mm. So much memories. She giggled, reminiscing how the three of them had gotten stuck in a closet. How coincidental was that? Too many coincidental things happened to Ruth here.

As she rounded the corner, she spotted the unruly curls of hair and a very familiar girl standing in the centre of the hallway, as if hesitating in front of the Astronomy class’ entrance door. Ruth could recognise the hair anywhere. Aurelia.

She sneaked up behind her, then spun around to pop up in front of Aurelia. There was no chance the girl noticed her. She was a sneaky one, the quiet one. The one with the grace of a cat. Ruth jazzed hands-her, exclaiming, “Aurelia! Merry Christmas.” She wiped a bead of non-existent sweat from the hefty climb. “Gosh, good to see you up here and up high. I believe you have the same thought as I did” Her cheeky smile got wider and she made a grab for Aurelia’s hand. “Come on!”

Perhaps not. Aurelia would rather not break the rules Hogwarts established. She managed to maintain her school records detention-free back in her former primary school. She had been an exemplary student before; she will preserve that image forevermore. It would be difficult this time too, since the institution established several Educational Decrees in the Entrance Hall, enough to knit a snuggly blanket from. Mattress, in fact. They are stricter than Aurelia's former schools she last attended, but she acknowledges the fact that it is for the safety of the students and for their safety only. If they say Astronomy Tower is off-limits, then end of discussion. The top is a hazard anyway, and there are so many valuable Astronomy-related devices so fragile in the classroom that it will be costly to pay if she accidentally breaks one. Prevention is better than cure, period.

Aurelia was about to head back when someone jumped in front of her, making her let out a small squeak and clutch her chest. Ruth Fairchild, the one she met in the Hogwarts Library, insisted on tagging along with W.H.I.P. With a crease of an eyebrow in confusion and slight irritation, she watched as the Hufflepuff witch made a rather silly gesture with her hands before greeting her that matches with the festive spirit that envelopes the castle today. Aurelia only nodded in response, fixing her Santa hat over her curls, given to her by a goblin earlier. What is Ruth doing up here? Last time she checked, the Christmas Feast is happening in the Great Hall, which is on the Ground Floor, not in this tower.

Whatever. She doesn't care. That is none of her business.

However, it had become her business when Ruth accused her of having the same thought as she did. Yes, accused. Of course, she thought to sneak in just to stargaze but eventually decided against it! Her face crinkled in slight offense.  Before she could defend herself, though, the Hufflepuff witch already grabbed her mittened hand and dragged her towards the Astronomy classroom. First of all, she totally disliked being manhandled like that. Second of all, Ruth talks so fast that she couldn't even interrupt; therefore, it ended up with her deciding for Aurelia. Third and lastly, they are breaking the rules. For an off-limits part of the castle, she half-expected it to be locked. They glided smoothly inside, climbing that long spiraling staircase, and Aurelia was speechless at first. Can someone explain to her what's going on? Everything just happened so suddenly. This is not what she planned for her Christmas night at all!

“What are you doing?!” Aurelia whispered with a reproachful tone, pulling her hand away from Ruth. Her deep brown eyes flashed with fear as she briefly looked around the classroom. It looks like the same as before, organised and with a touch of celestial aesthetic. Once they entered though, the lamps shaped like the moon lit up automatically, as if welcoming the intruders. Aurelia jumped slightly, half-expecting Professor Starwise to show himself and issue detention for the both of them. But nada. “We’re breaking a gazillion rules!” Aurelia muttered to herself with slight exasperation, fighting the urge to pull her curls. She doesn't mean that she memorised all the rules—who could memorise that? There are hundreds of Educational Decrees issued by the Ministry of Magic; Aurelia would like to see anyone try—but the young badger knows that intrusion is mighty serious.

Nonetheless, look at this place. The Astronomy classroom is easily the prettiest room in the Hogwarts castle, hands down. She gasped softly when she saw the dome-like structure of the room; it never ceases to amaze her, especially the beautiful view it provided. Aurelia tentatively approached the glass, looking out. It stopped snowing. There are clouds, but the wintry night is still beautiful. Shame it's real blurry too; some stars still prevailed though, and twinkled, perhaps winking at her. Encouraging her to stargaze and just... Enjoy the Christmas' festive spirit through celestial glory. The wooden ceiling is carved with constellations, lighting up the assorted stars that is visible in the current month. This December in Scotland, Orion, Canis Major, and the Big Dipper graces the sky. Aurelia let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. Astronomy is simply majestic.

𝕽uth barked out a soft laugh at Aurelia’s surprise, but wasted not in going through the entrance, slipping in (the door being unlocked felt like a bad sign, but there wasn’t enough time to wonder about that) and heading up to the highest of all highs— the grandest and breathtaking view awaiting for them at the top. Of course, when she made a try for the second floor of the classroom, the one with an outside level above the class, it was locked. Oh well, they could settle for the 360-ish views given to them. “What are you doing?” Aurelia hissed from behind her, her mitten hands still tucked between Ruth’s until she tugged it away. Ruth’s smiled wavered at the sight of Aurelia’s eyes dilating slightly, the fear prominent. Despite how brave Ruth might have acted at the front, she knew not to make fun of Aurelia’s anxiety of trespassing. They shouldn’t be doing it.

Ruth felt it too, the terrible sensation of rule breaking. Oh, but the thrill. Ruth wasn’t a measly Ravenclaw, those that actually seemed to think and strategise. Ruth wasn’t some brave Gryffindor, someone who could easily waltz into an outs of bounds. She wasn’t a Slytherin either, one who wouldn’t mind breaking rules, maybe. (She didn’t know too many Slytherins to confirm that stereotype) She was a Hufflepuff, and she stood nowhere between any of the values of the other houses.

Ruth sighed, turning to face Aurelia, arms akimbo and ignoring how jumpy her accompany was. “We aren’t breaking a gazillion rules.” Maybe just one, or two. They couldn’t possibly get caught already. It was Christmas, for goodness sake. Besides, surely Professor Starwise was in a jolly enough mood to allow for them to enjoy a little bit more time here? Ruth was ready with a simple reasoning to persuade the Professor to let them stay, even if it meant him staying with them.

Oh, she’d risk it for the stars.

Ruth, almost forgetting Aurelia was with her, began to walk away from the girl to the plump cushions provided in the “corner”, heaving up a couple and placing them slightly further away, still very much close to the transparent walls. Silent, she ushered a bunch of blankets into Aurelia’s hands, the soft and warmth leaving her as she passed them to the girl. Ruth herself took a couple and spread it out on the seats, then hurried to get herself a fidget. Something to fiddle her hands with while stargazing.

She settled into the comfy nest then, snug and unprepared to go anywhere. Of course, in case of Professor Starwise, her reasoning of placing the cushions not so far from their resting place stood. They were soft, making it much easier to quietly put back as well. The fidget on the other hand…if Ruth simply didn't have enough time to hide, she would just put it back later. What Professor counts all their fidgets?

Gosh, she really hope she didn’t jinx that. Ruth leaned forward, using her breath to fog the glass in front of her and making a wipe, an attempt to clear out some of the blurriness. It worked ever so slightly. Enough to make the young Hufflepuff satisfied at least.

She turned to Aurelia. “Please, come sit with me.” Ruth wondered if there was much of a pleading tone in her case, before turning back to watch the stars, waiting. It wasn’t too late in the night, not enough time for the Ursid Meteor shower, especially since the show was close to over. Mm, the last celestial showcase of the year.

Ruth leaned back further, sighing as her eyes gazed upon each glittering sun. She could stay here forever. Stop breathing, stop thinking. Eyes wide, taking in the sight. The dusk, the dawn, the day and night. Everything.

What did I do to deserve such a beautiful world?
In love with the stars with @Aurelia Valentine

Partially forgetting the fact that they are intruders in this entirely surrealistic place, Aurelia watched the sky, savouring the moment with her mouth slightly agape, the twinkle in her deep brown eyes could rival the stars itself. For all the love that is holy, she wants to reach for the stars, crush them in her palms and keep a piece as a necklace, or perhaps embed it in her chest just to feel absurd in the world of mundanity. The young badger was snapped from her dream-like stance when Ruth deposited bunch of blankets with different colours in her hands. With a slight crease in her forehead in confusion, Aurelia wrapped herself with it, tucking her rebellious curls underneath.

It is stated in Astronomy at Present that the Geminids Meteor Shower will be visible from the start of December until today. Although the newsletter had been questionable enough, she highly doubted that a meteor shower will randomly grace the wintry skies for her. Celestial events like this are difficult to come across; it is also a struggle to document it, especially when you do not possess the necessary equipment to witness it. All the equipment is installed on the second floor, so there's no chance they could use one. Not that Aurelia plans to use them, of course! Telescopes are mad expensive, plus she doesn't know how to use one. If she put on an act and damaged the equipment instead, she'd rather succumb right here.

“Don't you feel like a goldfish in a fish bowl?” Aurelia couldn't help but ask, pertaining to the dome-like structure of the room itself as soon as Ruth invited her in the cushions. The young badger didn't hesitate this time, worming in the cushions like a burrito with the blankets she wrapped herself with. What would seal this comfortable nest? A hot mug of hot chocolate, perhaps with gingerbread cookies too, to apply a great ending for Christmas Day. She eyed the staircase first, partially expecting someone to appear to scold them. She'd rather not think about it. Out of mind, it will never happen. She doesn't need karmic lessons today. On Christmas Day, no less? Diabolical. Her eyes flickered to Ruth before turning to the view outside.

“Merry Christmas, Ruth,” Aurelia mumbled, the usual haughtiness of her tone completely gone. She has only remembered that she hasn't greeted her back. Aurelia doesn't believe in Christmas; however, it is only decent to say it back. “You could have sneaked mugs of hot chocolate for us.” The young Hufflepuff witch stated humourously. She doesn't usually joke around, but if she didn't put humour in the situation, she'd be engulfed in anxiety. She just wanted to stargaze, and it'd be really vile to steal it from her.

𝕽uth was very much delighted to find Aurelia join her within the cushions whilst wrapped up in the blankets Ruth had handed to her. The girl smiled at the sight, amused as she hadn't meant for Aurelia to use the blankets for such purpose. Oh well. It wasn't a big deal.

Ruth pondered Aurelia's question, her eyes still wandering from one star to the next. A pleasurable sensation came over Ruth as she did so, making the girl shiver and tuck herself further into the blankets. "I don't." Ruth answered smoothly, leaning forward to touch the transparent wall with her fingers, sliding across the smooth surface. It left no smudges, something Ruth had known, since she had gone to the lavatory to wash her hands.

"In a glass bowl, you're trapped. There's only a limit to where you can go. If you feel that way, I understand." She gestured around them, "To me, however, I feel as though I'm just flying, mesmerised with the sky and the stars. I feel like they embrace me every time I stare a moment longer." Isn't it funny how Ruth had little knowledge of astronomy? It was a bummer, seeing as though stars were so interesting.

All those times Ruth had spent with her mouth agape and wide eyed while staring at the stars had made her thirsty again. That problem wasn't helped as Aurelia joked about sneaking in hot chocolate. Gosh, a mug of those would make her so warm, and honestly, Ruth had wanted to sneak a cup out of the Great Hall. She had savoured the idea of having one last sip before Christmas was over, though she jolly well knew she'd be having a couple more whilst Winter was still up and running.

Ruth let out a chuckle, hoping it was enough to allow Aurelia to think it was funny. She was glad to see that the Hufflepuff witch beside her was growing more and more relaxed by the minute.

"Do you know what meteor shower is on tonight?" Ruth asked her. She did, of course, but Ruth simply wanted to know if it was going to be a surprise for Aurelia. Honestly, I think not.

Aurelia looked back at Ruth incredulously when she replied about her question feeling like a fish in a fishbowl. It was supposed to be a joke, as the glass are shaped like a bowl itself. However, she shrugged, turning to the winter skies again. It is so beautiful. It is enough to question why the Tower is off-limits, gatekeeping this view enough to make you sleep, comforted by the prospect of the assorted stars accompanying you as you drift away. She can understand, though, not all students know the responsibility it takes to be around such essential and expensive equipment. They haven't used the Lunarium yet, however, Aurelia is eager at the prospect.

She couldn't believe she'd spent the rest of her Christmas in the Astronomy Tower, stargazing. With Ruth Fairchild, no less. The young badger laid her chin down on her knees, hugging her legs, her deep brown eyes fluttering from sleepiness she was feeling. It is criminal how the room is designed to be cosy. The stars twinkled back at her, some of them glittering orange, which reminded her of Ruth herself. The girl wore so much orange, like Aurelia wore so much dark green. If they were in a cartoon show, just like the shows Aurelia watched when she was a child back in the Muggle World, orange would be Ruth's signature colour, and her signature outfit would be her cardigans in autumn palettes. Olive and dark green would be Aurelia's signature colour; her signature attire would be her cosy dark green turtleneck sweaters.

When Ruth asked if she knew what meteor shower would grace the skies tonight, Aurelia immediately grabbed her leather satchel to check the Astronomy newsletter she subscribed to this year. The young badger didn't know if the information in here was credible; they lost her when she had read the Ask the Astronomer column. She didn't believe that the stars could predict love, and whoever asked that question was a dud. Ariah Heywood, isn't it? Darn Ariah Heywood, who probably only thinks of herself and romance. Rolling her eyes, she showed Ruth the Astronomy At Present: December 2024 Holiday Issue.

“Check the Upcoming Celestial Events column,” Aurelia urged, her nimble finger pointing at the said column. “Ursids, it says. Debris from Comet Tuttle. Which can be found between the handle of The Plough and Polaris, which is... here.” The young badger pointed at the twinkling North Star, Polaris. Giving the paper to Ruth, she squinted her eyes to see the Big Dipper. She couldn't find it. “Little chance, though, I think.”

❝Even if they didn’t, it would still be a lovely night up here with Aurelia. ❞

Astronomy Newsletters and Starry Winter Skies
𝕽uth raised her eyebrows in question as Aurelia presented her an article. “Astronomy At Present: December 2024 Holiday Issue” Ruth had never seen it before. Perhaps she had only been focusing on the Hogwarts Headliner that she never went beyond scrounging for other newspaper articles. After all, the Headliner provided her with good enough information, a pleasure able amount that satisfied her somewhat. She should probably be more curious from now on.

Silent, she peered down to read the contents, the only source of light the stars sparkling down at them, and the luminous moon. December 17th to the 25th, it wrote. Slightly disappointing that Ruth had come up on the last day possible to see the showcase, but with any luck she should be able to, right? Ruth offered Aurelia a lopsided grin, stifling a laugh as the girl seemed to bury under her curls and blanket even more. “I believe myself to be quite the lucky person,” she announced, squinting back down at the piece of paper in her hands. “With me here, we will most definitely be able to catch a sight.” Even if they didn’t, it would still be a lovely night up here with Aurelia. She could maybe even befriend the girl more.

Of course, Ruth wasn't sure how well Aurelia would take that joke. She might even think of her as a narcissist. Ruth dearly hoped not, but didn't make a move to point out it was a joke. That was fine. Ruth ruffled the pages of the newspaper a little more, making sure the ends didn't lazily slouch over.

Wow. Fascinating. Ruth found herself engrossed in the article, which was probably what Aurelia would have liked anyways. Silence. However, after drinking in as much information as she could in the dark, she turned back around to strike conversation with the dark haired girl, all the while gazing up at where Aurelia had pointed. Sure enough, Ruth could spot Polaris clearly. The Big Dipper though, was nowhere in sight. “Hey, Aurelia, you weren’t at the Christmas Feast, were you?” Ruth frowned. Or maybe she was, and Ruth was simply too busy stuffing her face with food? That'd be a shock, seeing as though Ruth's observation skills was almost never wrong. Maybe this was one of the times they could be.

Then again...that unruly mop of hair was hard to miss. Ruth decided against pointing it out, but continued, "Why'd you decide to stay for the holidays? At school, I mean."

With a sigh, Aurelia looked back out to the view once Ruth immersed herself in reading the said article. She searched for something—something familiar, something amazing that will cheer their rather bleak Christmas. Or her bleak Christmas; as the young badger beside her perhaps enjoyed the result of the holidays. She half-expected that being in the highest tower in all of Hogwarts will make them freeze from the extreme chilly weather; however, they are, indeed, in luck. There is no need for hot mugs of cocoa to warm themselves up; perhaps Professor Gargamel Starwise bothered himself by planting warming charms in the Tower.

The tranquility that the wintry night provided is so suspicious for Aurelia. Nothing pleasant happened that ended in, just pleasant, they all always end in a predicament enough to call a disaster. Attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry meant consecutive holidays or days without her mother around her. It was an inevitable change she did not think much of when she agreed to go, perhaps because this decision ended in a big fight. It was an act of rebellion; it was an act to be petty, petty enough to make her mum regret that she attempted to control her life by not making her go.

Her mum did not want her to go. Because it would mean Aurelia would much be closer to her absentee father than she would be like her mother. Her mum was unenthusiastic about the prospect of eventually meeting him, then he'll benefit as their child was growing to be such an exceptional person. Her mum always thinks that she's going to be outsmarted especially by her stupid father; like he did when she got pregnant with Aurelia at 16 and left her out of self-preservation. He had been selfish by leaving, her mum yelled at the teary Aurelia that day, and I will be selfish too.

She was snapped out of her thoughts when Ruth suddenly breaks the silence, stating that they'll perhaps see something remarkable as she was particularly a lucky person. Aurelia’s dark eyebrows automatically creased in confusion before smiling slightly, appreciating her humour. “Why, are you somehow the daughter of Nyx, or perhaps Astraios?” The young badger responded, snickering lightly.

Her feigned smile, which she made a real effort to show, immediately dropped from the question about being absent in the Christmas Feast and her reason to stay over the holidays. Aurelia hastily looked away, her deep brown eyes choosing to focus on the North Star instead, scrambling in the compartments of her mind to scrounge up something acceptable and not so pitiful answer to the otherwise spontaneous question. She wrapped the blankets securely around her as if to protect her body from the vulnerability the real reason will provide and strike her with.

“I’m not really that hungry, I suppose,” Aurelia shrugged her shoulders slightly and it was almost unnoticeable. She looked down, assessing herself if she was hungry and just downplaying it. Seconds passed, and still nothing. She let out a sigh out of apprehension, her breath slightly shaky. She supposed it doesn't hurt to share a tidbit about herself, that it will not be used as leverage against her. She doesn't even know why she thinks Ruth will do that to her, at the same time, being bullied in these past few years did fuel that belief. “Mum has to work over the holidays and informed me by owl that I should just stay here. It is most likely that I wouldn't be able to celebrate Christmas with her, anyway, in that kind of situation. You?”

Ruth did not strike Aurelia as someone who harboured animosity towards her parents. She kind of knows, or feels, whenever a person like her has built-up resentment planted in their heart like a bad seed. Aurelia turned out bitter; high and mighty and as haughty as she could be to conceal the fact that her family life had been her biggest insecurity of all time. However, if Ruth turned out to be someone she had not expected to be then Aurelia should applaud her for disguising it with a carefree façade. She gives credit when credit is due. In spite of that, those people are the types that the young badger always attempts to avoid, as making a fool of oneself is not exactly Aurelia’s forté. It is commendable and yet complicated to get around with.

She'd rather avoid theatrics that will drain her life away.

𝕽uth appreciated the snickering joke Aurelia had shot back. Perhaps her sense of humour existed, just not so much that it would overwhelm the girl's entire exterior. Ruth enjoyed people like that, those that knew when the time was right to joke and when it wasn't. Even know, Ruth wouldn't voluntarily raise her hand and proclaim that she fit into that category.

Her smile faltered just as Aurelia's did, watching as her friend's eyes died down to a dull simmer, her once sparkling eyes turning darker than it already was. Whatever she was thinking inside her head probably wasn't pleasant, but Aurelia failed to share and Ruth didn't press despite her simmering curiosity.

"Not hungry?" Ruth echoed, then her frown deepened, "You suppose?" Terrible answer. There was doubt in Aurelia's tone, and so without hesitation Ruth fished out a chocolate bar and a bag filled with pumpkin pasties, peppermint toads, acid pops and sherbet lemons , both picked out from this morning's trip to Hogsmeade. Ruth had already eaten a couple, so as she jiggled at the paperbag she was disappointed to feel its lightweight.

"I know you haven't eaten, and I probably shouldn't be giving these to you, but it's Christmas! Mindful indulgence is fine once in a while," she grinned and plopped it onto the girl's lap before she could protest. Maybe lift your mood up at the same time. That sentence was left unspoken.

Ruth perked up at the slight bitterness in her tone as Aurelia answered as to why she was staying for the fortnight. She nodded carefully, tilting her head to gaze at her. "I'm staying because I figured I could get to know the school better. Besides, I'm staying with a friend of mine. I'm sure we'll be able to spend some time together." She chuckled to herself, shaking her head as she looked away from the stars momentarily. It had barely been a few days since school break and they had already crossed one plan off their list. Ruth wasn't sure what else Jan might have install for the two but she was eager to explore the castle with him.

Her mind drifted back to the people she failed to spend time with as a result-- her family back in Bath, apparently bummed that she decided to stay. The corner of her lips turned up at the sweet reminisce of their faces. While the ache of homesickness had begun to die down, she couldn't help but relish its return, a sign that told her she was lucky to have such a wonderful and loving family. Perhaps it was ungreatful of her to not have come back to them for a short visit. After all, she had seven years at Hogwarts to explore the school and just a few months with her family in the process. She should have seized the opportunity, but she couldn't help it. Her eagerness to learn more about the school was far too much. Maybe her parents (and most definitely Aaron, her brother affected most of all) would forgive her when she visited them in the coming exeant weekend. Maybe. "They really wanted me to come back..." She stopped herself, realising that may have been a little insensitive, then cleared her throat.

"Hey, at least you have plenty of time to continue your Whi- I mean, W.H.I.P!" She blinked at her friend(?) and smiled, hoping to be radiating with positivity, just as the stars should be.
