"It's not too much to expect you to find a professor, not at all. You're not a bloody infant, are you? You've been to class before, you know who they are," Astra responded with vitriol to @Meiyu Xiang. She just didn't get it, did she? "Way I see it everyone pulled their weight except for you so you can shut it with that bull." It wasn't fair to expect her to do more than she did, Astra didn't think, not at all, when the kids wouldn't let her do anything. @Avis Marlong had barely let Astra perform a primary assessment, and Aamon had nigh on accused her of being the cause. She was done being patient and gentle with this. With all of them, except Avis, Avis was hurt and curious about Athanatos and whatever the hell was going on, just like Astra was. And maybe Astra had been too hard on her to reconcile everything, but maybe... Perhaps it was an avenue of exploration they could take together. At the very least, Avis needed some sort of protection, a little of which Astra could probably provide, if all were to work out as beautifully as one could imagine. Which very seldom happens.
Did Winnie think Astra was daft? Of course she knew what a cast was, any-
Oh.
Did Purebloods have casts? No. No they wouldn't, they had episkey and ferula and reparifors. So that- Winnie didn't think she was dumb, @Winnie Harper though she was a pure.
Astra muttered a half-interested "Oh", accompanied by a fleeting moment of elation before reality's claws closed around her yet again and she was faced with Aamon's continued untruths.
Eleven year old seers didn't get visions. They didn't get real ones, anyway. @Tommy Patterson was an eleven year old seer last year and he got everything 100% wrong. So they either didn't have visions, or their visions were lies. Maybe a vision from a different universe. Maybe their brains couldn't tell which vision they needed to pay attention to so they got wrong futures from other timelines and different universes.
Back on track, Astra! This is a Mahl @Mahlioz Evethisawe conversation anyway.
She pinched the bridge of her nose, determined to get to the bottom of this. With Avis being taken care of, she now had loads of questions for @Aamon Athanatos, and she speculated he wanted to hear absolutely zero of them.
"Okay, fine, yes, you guys are very famous Seers we know. But the gift doesn't manifest itself at age eleven! That's way too young! There's a seer here who's twelve now, but when he was eleven he had a vision that was very wrong. Or he lied about having one. So which is it? Do you just have a hit or miss chance of a vision or do you not get your visions until later?" Was it like Seer puberty, getting a vision? Did it make them better like it was supposed to make girls prettier and boys taller? Did it happen at the same time as regular puberty? Did they get cooler and better and taller, all at the same time?
Stop it! Off track! Focus!
Finnegan and Matt's conflict reached a new level of intense, rising from background noise to the main attraction. Astra was even more disgusted by the man as he alluded far too heavily to kissing, which everyone knows is supposed to be after marriage or age thirty. Poor Winnie looked confused and afraid- Astra wondered why she stayed with such an obvious prick. She tried to meditate, she tried her best, but Finnegan went spell slinging. He seemed to do that a lot. He burned Uly and tied Astra's tongue once, she didn't even know what for. Now he was going to freeze Mathias. Not to say the bloke didn't deserve it, probably some form of comeuppance, but did it really have to be now? But Astra was not going to enter herself into anything.
She knelt to the ground a well enough distance away from Avis to hopefully quiet whatever unease the younger girl had towards her. "I'm sorry for yelling at you earlier. I- it's hard to explain, but I think we have much the same questions." A sideways glance to the altercation. "Maybe later. Again, terribly sorry."

OC: Been a week, moving on.
IC:
He delved into his family history, something he rarely discussed because he assumed everyone simply knew. But when Winnie, Mathias' long-term girlfriend, reacted with surprise upon learning that his brother was a Seer, it perplexed the boy. His gaze flickered toward Pride, as if searching for some unspoken answer, but the words caught in his throat. He couldn’t explain—not fully, not yet.
Besides, he had his own burdens to carry. “You told us it was dangerous, you told us we could get hurt. How could you have known if you hadn't seen it?” He felt sick with her words. The weight of her accusation hung in the air.
He didn’t aspire to be a hero, but he couldn’t embrace the role of a villain either. A deep sigh escaped him as the truth began to sink in: his eldest brother had tried to warn him, and now, for the first time, he was starting to comprehend why. Even Mathias’ coldness made a little more sense in this moment, though it didn't excuse his actions. "I must be some kind of monster," he muttered softly, a bitter laugh following. His eyes flickered to the girl—her pink attire oddly comforting amidst the chaos. She seemed like a nice person, like many of them were. A shame, he thought. A lot of them were nice.
Before Avis could fully regain her composure, while Pride was busy wreaking havoc, the boy knew he had to act on his plan, however flawed it was. He didn’t want Avis following him, not this time. Her answers would remain unanswered. If she caught him again, the next time might be worse—next time, they might break her neck. His understanding of things was deepening. "It was fun," he said, with a strange mix of detachment and sincerity, though the joy in watching someone nearly fall to their doom felt hollow now. Sounded forced he felt, but it was the most insensitive seguey he could come up with.
Astra seemed to simply bne a personification of misery on legs. She yelled at him, telling him about his family, his bloodline potential. He looked her directly in the eye, well it would have been eyes but he did not bother to square himself with her. There was no reason. "A liar I must be then. Pleased?" He did not feel bad being so blunt, but the attitude he displayed felt wrong. Like he was pretending to be someone else. But at least it was not a lie, even if his tone suggested it was one. "I knew she specifically was going to fall," referring to Avis. "And let her," he continued. "I knew she was going to celebrate her birthday almost alone." Rude, but true. A referenced to Winnie's unfortunate romance with Mathias. "But not a Seer, because if I was I would have avoided the blight of a woman that was you. Is that what you want to hear? Does that adhere to your narrow expectation of the world?" The questions rhetorical, he did not wait for a response and he did not care if he got one.
The cruel games, the thoughtless words—it was easier to distance people with small slights, to keep them at arm’s length. He loathed it, loathed the person it made him. But it was safer. Also, he was surprised by how easy it was. How freeing.
He would glance back to Avis, the unfortunate victim in all of this but far too stubborn to avoid disaster. "Later, babe," he echoed, borrowing the flippant phrase from Mathias, though the words left a bad taste in his mouth. He gave the girl a half-hearted wave, ducking away from the brewing chaos between Pride and Finn, careful not to get ensnared in their battle.

OC: Said I was giving you the hit regardless. But it was a crit, so no question.
IC:
Winnie was never told about his particular skills. He had not told anyone outside of his immediate family and he planned to keep it that way. Knowledge was a currency that his family knew well and his stinging gaze rested on Aamon - how in the hells were they even related? "I think he was referencing Vladimir," Mathias lied.
He would get into an altercation with the underclassman that was trying to hook an older woman. His woman.
Mathias threw a glance towards Aamonm, who was uncharacteristically causing a bit of chaos nearby. For all their squabbles, they were brothers in arms in a sense—two sides of the same coin. This kid, Finn, in front of him? He wasn’t even in the same league.
“Run along,” Mathias taunted his younger brother Aamon, stepping to the side just slightly, as if offering a path of escape. “Before I really make you regret it.” He was not built for dealing with real people. You’re no villain, Mathias thought with a grin, but I don’t mind being one.
Mathias Pride's lips curled into a mocking smirk as he watched the Finn's pitiful display unfold before him. The stuttering, the sniveling—exactly how he liked to see people crumble. A flash of satisfaction surged through him at the sight of those red cheeks, the puffy eyes, the desperation. Weak. That's what this was: pure, unadulterated weakness.
Winnie’s name on the boy’s lips was just the cherry on top. He hated seeing her associated with these kinds of people, the fragile types, the ones who folded under the slightest pressure. Mathias was certain of one thing: this boy didn’t stand a chance against him. Not with the trembling hands and feigned composure. Don’t do anything? Oh, Mathias saw right through it—he could practically taste the fear behind those words. It was intoxicating.
But then... something changed.
The stammering stopped. The crying, the pathetic wiping at his face—it all ceased. A cold clarity slid into the boy’s voice, and Mathias’ eyes narrowed, immediately on guard. Something was different.
Before he could fully process the shift, the boy’s wand was out and Mathias instinctively moved, his body acting on reflex alone.
“PETRIFICUS TOTALUS!”
The spell flew towards him, cutting through the air with precision. He had underestimated this kid, it seemed. But Mathias was no stranger to duels—especially against amateurs like this one. With the same arrogance that had gotten him into this mess, he flicked his own wand at lightning speed. Only, he did not cast his counter in time.
Mathias had been so certain of his victory, so assured in his smug superiority, that when the spell hit him, it was almost comical. The shock registered on his face for only a split second before his body seized up. His limbs locked together, rigid, as though invisible chains had wrapped around him, rendering him completely immobile. The paralysis set in immediately—his wand slipped from his grasp, clattering to the floor uselessly.
His mind raced, but his body betrayed him, stuck in a helpless, humiliating pose. He could still see, still hear everything around him, but he couldn’t react. The smirk that had been on his lips was frozen in place, a mocking grin that now seemed pitifully ironic. He, Mathias Pride, reduced to nothing by a single spell from someone he had deemed unworthy.
How had it happened?
His thoughts were a chaotic swirl, but amidst the mental noise was an echo of his brother's words. Don't toy with people’s pride, Mathias, Pride had warned him more than once. And yet, here he was—arrogance and pride laid bare, and now he was the one frozen in place, humiliated for all to see.
The boy, who had once looked so pitiful, now stood over him, his expression a mixture of shock, relief, and maybe just the tiniest hint of satisfaction. Mathias, if he could have, would’ve laughed at the irony. Maybe I deserved this one, he thought, bitterly. But there was no room for remorse—only rage brewing beneath the surface. He would remember this moment.
Oh, yes, the next time he moved, the next time he had control over his body, Mathias would make sure this boy learned just how dangerous it was to cross him.

“I’d never forget something as important as your birthday. This was supposed to be our day, but these kids... I had everything planned. But don’t worry, I’ll make it up to you. This weekend, it’ll just be you and me. You deserve that, after all.”
Winnie nodded at Mathias' words. His touch was warm and familiar and it lulled her into a false sense of security, despite her brain rudely reminding her that she had no way of knowing if he was being truthful. How could she claim he was lying when she had no proof? She longed for his words to hold some truth behind them, to go back in time and be her naive 13-year-old self who would believe every word that came out of Matt's mouth.
"Oh, Mattie... That sounds wonderful. I'm sorry I doubted you." No she wasn't, but he didn't need to know that. It was her way of rationalizing the lies. Truthfully, it startled her how easy it was becoming. She had yet to realize this was something people in toxic relationships did; adopt a fifth survival response. Flight, fight, freeze, fawn, or... Lie your ass off. It was easier than the alternative; getting into a fight you knew you would never be able to win longing for an admission of wrongdoing, only to be met with deflection and blame.
“Wearing a scrunchie doesn’t make you important, it just makes you look desperate.”
The entire 'Finn-pretending-to-be-her-boyfriend' thing was still confusing for Winnie, she had no idea about the scrunchie 'rule' despite growing up in a muggle-influenced house hold. She wondered if Matt was really getting so territorial about her scrunchie, "Sweetie, it's fine. You can have my scrunchie if you want." She just wanted to leave. Her grip around his midsection tightened, lest he try to close the distance between him and Finn so the two could partake in a slap fight.
“Sure, babe. An empty classroom. Just you and me, like I promised.”
Thank Merlin he was willing to let it go and Finn would live to see another day. Erm, not that he was in danger of dying but Mathias was a bit scary when he got angry, like three years ago at her birthday party. She could still remember it because she had been marched off to detention afterwards. Matt had been too, after using a can of pepper spray on someone. Regardless of the disaster, it was a fond memory for her because Matt had stood up for her.
“Let’s get out of here. You don’t need to waste your time with this lot.”
Spending her time making out with Matt was definitely not the worst thing she could do on her birthday. "Thank you," she smiled up at him, releasing her hold on him before turning to face the others, "it was nice meeting you all, I hope you feel better soon, Avis."
"W-winnie... d-don't do any-anything,"
Those stammering words pulled at the Ravenclaw's heart strings, and she put her exit on pause, "Aw, Finn... Don't cry." She reached into her pocket so she could offer him the handkerchief her mother hand hand embroidered.
"I can explain."
"Explain wh—FINN, NO!" It was senseless to try and stop the third year mid-spell, especially one that had been cast so fantastically.
With her signature screech echoing against the stone walls, Winnie watched in horror as her boyfriend seized up and fell over like a mere domino. Without hesitating, she rushed to his side. "Mattie! Are you okay?!" Of course he wasn't, and he couldn't answer either. His body was nothing but a stiff board at this point, regardless of how the Ravenclaw tried to cradle her petrified boyfriend.
Her mind raced trying to remember lessons. General Counter-Spell would work, but her healing spell was tried and true. Gripping her aspen wood wand, Winnie would point it towards her boyfriend and cast, "Reparifors!"
After she had cast her spell, she stood up, long tresses whipping through the air as she turned to face Finn. "You..." She growled, her anger beginning to boil over. How dare he, how dare he hurt her Mathias.WDC is 11.
[d20 : 11] + 9
In the end, the result was: 20
50 + 7 × 8 = 106
20% of 106 is 21.
21 + 106 = 127
Assuming Matt cannot dodge as he is unable to move, but if he can and wants to, I rolled a 33 total for accuracy. If this spell hits he would be healed 127 HP and (according to the duelling spell rules) no longer under the effects of Petrificus Totalus.
In a flash of copper and pink, Winnie's form shifted and churned until a dog stood where the witch was only mere seconds ago. Having shared a tent with Winnie during summer camp, Finn would likely recognize the Ravenclaw's Animagus form; a coppery red coat similar to Winnie's hair and a dash of freckles across the white strip on its nose mirroring the Ravenclaw's. Rushing to guard Mathias, the dog's eyes were peeled on Finn as it drew its upper lip back to reveal its sharp canine teeth, a low growl rumbling from the pup's throat.
Whether or not Finn wanted to find out if Winnie was stronger in her dog form or her human form was entirely up to the Gryffindor.

Avis basically flew to her feet and plastered herself against the wall as a spell was cast, rendering Mathias paralyzed. She had never seen an attack spell before, hadn't really seen any spells besides the ones in class and the various healing spells she had been subject to. The thing scared her half to death, with everything that had happened today. When the spell's commotion was over she wilted a little bit, but her heart was racing and her legs just could not stop shaking. Her fingers itched to tap against her leg but she balled them into fists, trying to keep her composure and just keep breathing.
This was the craziest--well, tied for the craziest--day of her life, and her heart couldn't pump enough oxygen to her brain to comprehend everything that was happening. She had, after all, been through a lot for a barely 11-year-old, and the day was getting to her. She didn't know who to look at, who to trust, and she barely noticed as Aamon slipped out. She pocketed the things he had said, the admissions she could use, but she was too overwhelmed to sort through them now. That was a task for tomorrow. She really ought to start a notebook.
"I'm sorry for yelling at you earlier. I- it's hard to explain, but I think we have much the same questions. Maybe later. Again, terribly sorry." The scary girl was still there, still scary, but she had knelt down aways from Avis, and it was enough for the logic in her brain to try and ignore the thing. Whatever the scariness was, it didn't seem to be her fault.
But then her adrenaline started to fade and her legs turned to jelly, and she sank back down to the floor, out of the way of all the commotion. She was just going to rest here until she had the energy to get up, do anything, and think. She looked up at the scary girl and nodded, muttering "Later"

He was deaf to Winnie's cry, blind to the things he set in motion, unfeeling towards Mathias's humiliation, but not indifferent to the taste of power. It would have ended even quicker had this been a muggle fight because Mathias had every conceivable advantage: age, experience, height, strength, even cunning. Yet who had come out on top? He had it coming. Mathias had judged there to be no danger and lacked the speed to act when it finally bared its teeth.
Finnegan regarded his handiwork with grim satisfaction, but was denied much celebration as Winnie rushed to the teenager's aid. What a waste. Finnegan thought he might have liked standing over the board of a boy a little while longer so he might better remember the pathetic display at his feet. It would have allowed the Slytherin teen to consider his many wrongdoings, though he was far likelier to marinate in his ego and contemplate only revenge.
"You..."
That singular word was far more threatening than what followed. There was a blur of red and pink, stretching and contracting then collapsing in on itself before reshaping into a familiar young dog. Even though it snarled and growled and revealed its teeth, Finnegan could hardly take it seriously. The growling animal was just a cute pup that he thought he could send flying halfway across the room if he were to kick it like a football. Maybe Mathias was into kicking puppies, but he wasn't and even if it had attacked him, he would have remembered it was Winnie and only attempted to shake it off.
A glance toward the door told him that Aamon had slipped away. One moment of inattention and the kid slithered away, he should have expected it, the boy's eagerness to disappear was simultaneously understandable and an admission of guilt.
With Winnie snarling at him, Mathias moments away from rising like a ressurected zombie and the great unknown that was Astra Norrick still lingering in his peripheral view, there was danger everywhere and no room for mistakes. He lowered his wand and showed the palm of his free hand to Winnie, as though he were trying to calm some distressed animal. "I didn't hurt him." A half-truth. If not physically hurt from plummeting to the ground, then Mathias would surely have suffered a dent to his fragile ego. "My spells aren't even that strong, Winnie" The words were a cloaked stab at Mathias. By lowering himself to the level of insignifance that the teen had estimated him to be he only increased the damage done. After all, if this was what a mere, snotty third-year could do to Mathias Pride...
He acted swiftly then, before Winnie figured it out. Leaving her alone with that greasy beanpole didn't sit right with him, but leaving a harmless, clueless first-year in the middle of this mess was arguably worse. Besides, Winnie had clearly picked a side, presumably out of some false sense of loyalty, maybe even fear. Either way, the situation could only get worse from here if he remained. Furthermore, he had no desire to be on the receiving end of Mathias's spellwork, even if it was likely as impotent as the boy himself.
The injured girl, the one with the blue highlights in her hair, had glued herself to the nearest wall but was now sinking down it. Then there was the Gryffindor first-year, the one who had - wisely perhaps - remained passive throughout it all.
"We should head back to our common rooms," he said, adressing them both. He extended a hand toward Avis to help pull her up, though he would not keep his hand there for long if she hesitated or refused. By all rights everyone's attention should have been on her and her well-being, but Mathias's presence had thrown a very big wrench in that notion. He wanted to ask her more about what exactly at happened, but this was not the place or time for casual conversation. Meiyu would be urged on with a vague gesture toward the door and Astra received a singular, questioning look, but he did not linger around for long. Unless hindered by some backstabbing spell or dog's teeth sinking into his calves, Finnegan would follow in Aamon's footsteps and leave.
OOC: attempting to gracefully bow out, unless actively hindered from doing so. Any attack will be attempted to be blocked with Protego.

The Pink Lady
Mathias stood frozen, still under the effects of Petrificus Totalus, his mind a maelstrom of anger, humiliation, and oddly enough bitter satisfaction. Finn’s spell had hit him, sure, but the boy had no idea what was coming next. Mathias would make sure of it. It had been a long time since he had a playmate.
His body lay still, paralyzed and helpless as Winnie rushed to his side, panic etched across her face. Despite her desperation and the tenderness in her voice, there was no denying the reality of the situation—she hadn’t stopped this. She hadn’t protected him from Finn. She was stuck reacting, just like everyone else. And that—that—was something Mathias couldn’t let slide.
He heard her cast the counter-spell, Reparifors, and felt the gradual release of the paralysis. At least he was not going to have to try to twist the threads this day. Slowly, sensation crept back into his limbs, and while Winnie fussed over him, concern radiating from her every movement, Mathias’s eyes flicked to Finn. The Gryffindor stood there, trying to act casual, as if he hadn’t just committed an unforgivable mistake.
Mathias rose slowly, his body still stiff from the spell, but his anger sharper than ever. He noticed Winnie’s transformation into her Animagus form, the coppery-furred dog snarling at Finn, but it was unnecessary. She didn’t need to protect him, at least in that form—he would handle this himself.
Finn's smug attempts at diplomacy, lowering his wand and raising his hand in false surrender, only deepened Mathias's disdain. "I didn't hurt him," Finn lied, but Mathias saw through the words like glass. It wasn’t about physical pain. Finn had humiliated him, and that was far worse. But Mathias wasn’t about to let the boy walk away so easily.
His gaze shifted to Winnie, still in her Animagus form, loyalty etched across her features as she defended him, even in the face of her own doubts. She was terrified—Mathias could see that in the way her was starting to act around him once again—but in spite of those likely growing doubts, she had chosen his side, and that meant something.
Finally regaining full control of his limbs, Mathias stood tall and spoke, his voice low and laced with menace. “You think this is over, Finn?” His words were soft but carried the weight of a promise—one that would not be forgotten. “You’re going to wish you’d never crossed me.” The words that moment likely seemed liked hollow threats from an entitled Slytherin.
Turning to Winnie, he softened his expression just enough to reassure her, though a part of him still bristled at her earlier fear, her suspicions. She had doubted him, and that was something he would address later. She had a belated birthday to celebrate after all. But for now, he needed her on his side. “Thank you, babe,” he murmured, his voice warmer. “Let’s get out of here.”
But his eyes—his cold, calculating eyes—never left Finn’s retreating figure. Mathias wasn’t finished with him. Not by a long shot. And when the time came, Finn would understand just what it meant to cross someone like Mathias Pride.

If Winnie had stopped to think it through, she would have realized that her dog form would never be that much of a threat, especially given how often her friends would fawn over her appearance as a dog. Still, she held steady, guarding her boyfriend as her eyes stayed peeled on Finn. She could only give a quick exhale of air out of her snout when he claimed he hadn't harmed him. Bullshit.
Her tensed body only relaxed once she had watched the Gryffindor exit the room. Thank Merlin, she thought to herself, This was starting to get way too heated.
Staring up at her boyfriend from this height was odd, but Matt had always seemed like a giant. Her tail wagged when he thanked her, luckily she didn't notice or she'd have been horrified. Her form shifted again as she changed back, taking a moment to steady herself as she brushed her dress off.
"Anytime... Just... Just forget about him, Mattie. He's young; he doesn't know any better." As she walked over to retrieve her purse, she tried to ignore the knot in her stomach. She knew it was far from over; Mathias wasn't going to let it go that easily.
With a sigh she returned to his side, reaching down to take his hand. She'd offer him an uneasy smile as they started to exit the classroom.
Winnie exits the thread.
